opprairie.com news the orland park prairie | February 7, 2019 | 11 Sons of Italy to grant college scholarships to high school students Submitted by Illinois Sons of Italy The Illinois Sons of Italy Foundation, based in Orland Park, recently announced that graduating high school seniors who are full or partially of Italian ancestry are invited to compete for college scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each, to be awarded by the foundation. The Scholarships are to be awarded to qualified students who will graduate this year from any recognized public or private high school within the Chicago area. Applicants will be selected upon the basis of financial need, scholastic achievements, activities in high school showing character and leadership, applicant’s personal essay, and faculty recommendations. Applications can be obtained by contacting the Illinois Sons of Italy Foundation, in writing, at 9447 W. 144th Place, Orland Park, IL, 60462 (include a self-addressed, stamped envelope), or via email aat gl@osiailwi. org, or at osia.uno. Business Briefs Palos Health, Loyola Medicine to pursue more synergy together Palos Health and Loyola Medicine have signed a nonbinding letter of intent to explore opportunities to build upon their strategic partnership that began in 2015. The parties will enter a due diligence process with the goal of Palos Health and its affiliate organizations joining Loyola’s comprehensive regional health system. Loyola is a member of Trinity Health, one of the nation’s largest Catholic healthcare systems. Palos Health, serving Chicago’s south and southwest suburbs, is a fully integrated, community-based healthcare system consisting of Palos Hospital, Palos Medical Group, Sigma Patient Safety Organization, Palos Imaging and Diagnostic Center, Palos Health South Campus in Orland Park, Palos Home Care and Hospice and Chicago Health Colleagues, a clinically integrated physician network. In 2015, Palos Health and Loyola Medicine formed an academic affiliation that allowed Palos to expand its clinical services. The academic affiliation resulted in several patient-care initiatives, including a telestroke program that brings the expertise of Loyola stroke specialists to the patient’s Palos Hospital bedside and streamlined trauma transfers and subspecialty referrals from Palos to Loyola. Last year, Palos opened an 83,000-square-foot expansion of the Palos Health South Campus in Orland Park, which features 47 specialty and primary care exam rooms, staffed by Loyola physicians, and Palos and Loyola jointly own an outpatient surgery center and a radiation oncology center featuring the first Viewray MRIdian radiation therapy system in Illinois. The proposed transaction is to build upon the organizations’ synergies and expand Loyola’s regional system to enhance access to care and services, retain and attract the best clinical staff and physicians, and continue to provide high-quality care to Chicago’s south and southwest suburban communities. Loyola Medicine’s regional system includes Loyola University Medical Center, Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, MacNeal Hospital and its affiliated operations acquired from Tenet Healthcare in 2018, and a large ambulatory network offering primary and specialty care at locations throughout Cook, Will and DuPage counties. The due diligence process is expected to take several months. The terms of the LOI are not being disclosed. Palos Health will continue to operate as a not-for-profit corporation. Ballet 5:8 makes new home in Orland Park Ballet 5:8 has moved its professional performing company and dance education center from its seven-year home in Frankfort to a newly remodeled 12,000-square-foot building in Orland Park. The new location — just minutes from Interstate 80 and LaGrange Road, and a 35-minute drive from downtown Chicago — is a step up from the company’s previous home, and includes five state-of-the-art studios and a dedicated cross-training studio, plus added space and amenities for the company’s 13 professional dancers, expanding local student population and administrative staff. The new and larger studios will allow Ballet 5:8 to continue to increase the size of its professional performing company over time. The new building also is to foster continued growth for Ballet 5:8’s education programs for all ages, including hundreds of after-school classes, adult dance and fitness classes, monthly workshops for special needs dancers, and a range of intensives and conferences that attract students, choreographers and dance education leaders from across the country during the summer months. A ribbon cutting ceremony at Ballet 5:8’s new location, facilitated by the Orland Park Area Chamber of Commerce, is slated for 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, and is open to the public. The Ballet 5:8 professional company performs throughout the Chicago area the Midwest and the nation. Upcoming local performances include a full-length showing of the company’s acclaimed program “The Space in Between” on Feb. 16 at the Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin. The School of the Arts also is to perform “The Wayward Daughter” May 11 and 12 at Lincoln- Way West High School in New Lenox. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Ballet 5:8 relies on community and foundation support to cover operating costs not supported by ticket sales and tuition. The company has raised 74 percent if its 2018-2019 fundraising goal, which includes funding for the move and buildout costs. Operation Nehemiah worked with Ballet 5:8 from October to December to complete the renovations that transformed the empty warehouse into Ballet 5:8’s new home. Ballet 5:8 started with just three professional dancers in 2012 and a range of local performances, largely in non-traditional venues. Today, Ballet 5:8 contracts 13 professional dancers who have moved from across the U.S. and Canada to work with the company, performing an expanding repertoire of original works in professional theaters across the country. Ballet 5:8’s education center, Ballet 5:8 School of the Arts, has grown to serve nearly 300 students each year at its main campus. Students attending classes at the main location, now in Orland Park, hail from more than 25 area communities, including Orland Park, Tinley Park, Frankfort, New Lenox and Mokena.
