VISIT US TODAY Glencoe’s Shanghai Garden serves up ‘real Chinese food fast’ Megan Bernard Contributing Editor When Chin’s Chop Suey closed after 20 years in downtown Glencoe, residents were left missing their Chinese takeout. Luckily for them, the space didn’t stay vacant for long. “It has been a Chinese restaurant since 1964,” landlord Kevin Campbell previously told 22nd Century Media. “It was originally owned by Mr. Chin. About 20 years ago, he retired and sold the business to family members, the Chens. They maintained the name and it’s basically another retirement situation. They found another family member who was interested in purchasing it.” Shanghai Garden, a new Chinese food restaurant, opened up shop in the beginning of October last year. It took about a year’s time from the possession to the opening date after the space was required to renovate due to Glencoe’s Village Code. The “total remodel,” Campbell said, included renovating the kitchen and equipment, changes to the seating, and new floors. “The fact that we didn’t have the restaurant there for a year’s time, it was really missed by the community,” Campbell said. “I was getting questions constantly through the process about the buildout and when we were going to open. “They were truly missed. There was a great deal of excitement when they got up and running.” Husband and wife, Rong The orange chicken lunch special ($6.95) features fried chicken pieces coated in a sweet orange-flavored chili sauce. Eric DeGrechie/22nd Century Media and Shu Yan Wu, of Chicago, own and operate Shanghai Garden at 655 Vernon Ave. The Wus — who are related to the Chin family and are “experienced restaurant owners,” according to Campbell — kept Chin’s staples, but updated and modernized the menu. The menu, described as authentic Hunan, Szechuan and Cantonese cuisine, offers lunch and dinner options with an additional section for Weight Watchers. The menu also provides a slogan to describe the food: “This isn’t fast food, it’s real Chinese food fast.” 22nd Century Media editors recently visited Shanghai Garden to see the new space and grab some lunch. The downtown establishment has several tables to dine at, but serves mostly as a takeout destination. To begin, we started with the chicken pot stickers ($5.95). The dumplinglike appetizer came with soy sauce and was packed with shredded meat. We also tried several lunch specials, including the Mongolian beef ($6.95), Kung Pao Shrimp Shanghai Garden 655 Vernon Ave., Glencoe (847) 835-4660 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday 2:30-9 p.m. Sunday Closed Monday ($6.95), orange chicken ($6.95) and lo mein ($6.40). The lunch specials were a hit with our office and each flavorful dish was served with a heaping amount of chicken fried rice. Each of the lunch specials were considered entrees, and included an egg roll, the rice and a fortune cookie. The special runs from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. After 3 p.m., it is $1.50 extra. In all, residents have reacted well to the new restaurant, according to Jordan Lester, Village of Glencoe management analyst and deputy village clerk. “The feedback has been positive,” Campbell said. “The community is happy to have the Chinese restaurant back even though it’s under new ownership.”
