Staff Report Will County Clerk Lauren Staley Ferry is urging interested individuals from both major political parties to sign up to become an election judge to work the Consolidated Election on April 2. The Will County Clerk’s Office is seeking new election judges from throughout Will County. There is a particularly pressing need for new election judges in the following Townships: Channahon, DuPage, Frankfort, Homer, Joliet, Lockport, New Lenox, Troy, and Wheatland. Those interested in serving as Republican election judges in these areas are strongly encouraged to apply. Election judges are paid $150 for the day they are assigned to work at a polling place, in addition to mileage reimbursement. The Clerk’s Office strives to assign election judges to polling places in or near the precincts in which they live. Election judges are required to attend a two-and-ahalf hour training class that is scheduled during a weekday morning or afternoon. Upon completion of training and an assignment, they can earn extra compensation by helping to pick-up and drop-off election supplies during the Consolidated Election. Interested individuals can apply to be an Election Judge at www.thewillcountyclerk. com. The County Clerk’s staff will contact applicants to schedule a training class. Applicants must live in Will County and be registered to vote in the next election. A high school senior with a 3.0/4.0 GPA also is eligible to apply. Students may be enrolled in a public or private school, a local community college or university, or a private secondary school. The Will County Clerk’s Office strives to assign five election judges to serve each precinct. It requires roughly 1,550 election judges to properly staff a Will County election. The ratio of Republican and Democratic election judges at each polling place is determined by the average party turnout in the three most recent Illinois governor’s races. It’s imperative to have a balance of Republicans and Democrats at the polling place to assure the integrity of the election. homerhorizon.com NEWS the Homer Horizon | February 7, 2019 | 5 Understanding World Religions series educates on various faiths Rochelle McAuliffe Freelance Reporter Exploring and understanding world religions can be a daunting experience for those looking to learn about different faiths. Since last month, Our Mother of Good Counsel Parish in Homer Glen has been hosting a weekly class on Understanding World Religions to help members of the community and beyond learn about different faiths. Led by the Rev. Joseph Broudou, pastor of the parish, the class explores the three main Abrahamic religions — Judaism, Christianity and Islam, as well as Hinduism and Buddhism. “By learning about other religions, it helps someone to want to go deeper and know more about their own religion and faith,” Broudou explained. As part of the Parish’s Faith Formation and Religious Education program, the Understanding World Religions series was created with the intention of answering questions about other religions, as well as finding connections and similarities within other faiths. Since 1997, Janet Litterio has been the coordinator of faith formation for the parish and has been introducing and implementing religious education classes since less than a year after the parish’s opening. It is the first time the parish has hosted a class like this, and Litterio is excited for the doors it could open. “We’re just hoping people can learn more about the different world faiths,” Litterio said. “It will give a better understanding of people’s neighbors not just here in Homer Glen, but globally.” Broudou hails originally from Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean with a Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist and Christian population. Because of his island upbringing, he can provide a wider perspective of the world’s faiths. “I lived it, so I want to share it,” Broudou said. “Learning about our differences make people more aware and able to understand things different from what they’re used to.” Mary Flanagan, of Homer Glen, is a parishioner at Our Mother of Good Counsel who has long wanted to explore other world faiths and attended a recent class of Understanding World Religions. Growing up in the Catholic faith, she said she didn’t get to learn much about other religions, but she’s always found world religion fascinating. For Flanagan, she believes that faith should be a unifying thing, rather than something divisive. When asked about the importance of the acceptance of other people’s faiths, she responded saying that she believes that the acceptance of everyone’s differences needs to become a priority. “Acceptance is something that needs to be practiced more … We need to be joined together and united again,” Flanagan said. “Rather than the divisiveness and partisanship, I think we could learn how to get along.” “Homer Glen has a very diverse faith population,” Litterio added. “I feel that if people understood each other a little better, they would come to realize we’re all neighbors, we’re all brothers and sisters. “Maybe we can live in better harmony if we understood each other’s faiths and cultures a little better.” Remaining classes are from 1-2:30 p.m. Thursdays through Feb. 14, as well as 7-8:30 p.m. Mondays through Feb. 18, respectively.
