People Power Saves Ice Rink

A TWT-backed, people-powered campaign has achieved a cool victory after developer
AMP Capital this week announced it would keep the Olympic-sized ice rink which had
been under threat in its redevelopment plans.
“We have listened to community feedback. Their outpouring of support shows us they are
passionate about retaining an Olympic-sized facility,” Managing Director of AMP Capital
Shopping Centres, Mark Kirkland, said in a statement.
“We know that any redevelopment also needs to continue
to evolve Macquarie Centre’s unique entertainment and
leisure facilities, provide additional civic space, expand
night life activities and improve connections to public
transport.
“AMP Capital remains committed to delivering an
out-standing development for the broader North West
Sydney community. We have a lot of hard work to do to
bring this to fruition.”
He said AMP Capital thanked the local community,
the NSW Premier, the State Member for Ryde, the
Mayor of the City of Ryde, local councillors and council
officers for their involvement to date.
“We look forward to continuing to work together to
find the best outcome for all stakeholders including
Macquarie Centre’s investors,” Mr Kirkland said.
With the NSW state election now only two months
away, both the incumbent Liberal member for Ryde,
Victor Dominello and his Labor challenger, the Mayor of
Ryde, Jerome Laxale, took to social media to announce
the latest development, with Mr Dominello first to hit the
“send” button.
“Thankyou to all who signed the petition. People
power wins! Share the good news! More to come,”
Mr Dominello said in his Facebook post.
A short time later, Mayor Laxale posted to his Facebook page:
Huge win for community
“This is a huge win for our community, who have
been fighting hard to save our ice rink.”
“There is still a lot of work to do, and the State
Government’s 37 storey zoning remains, however this
is a great first step!”
Independent councillor, Roy Maggio, said he is not
surprised the politicians would claim victory for The
Weekly Times’ win.
“There will no doubt be two election candidates
desperately wanting to claim credit for this fantastic
news,” he told The Weekly Times.
“But we have to give credit where it’s due.
“AMP Capital had the guts to admit it needed to
engage with the community more and this kind of
outcome is what democracy is all about.”
In what appeared to be a desperate, 11th hour bid
to save the ice rink from being demolished, an interim
heritage order was proposed by Liberal councillors
Trenton Brown and Jordan Lane at the Ryde Council
special meeting - attracting a full house of more than
200 residents – who backed The Weekly Times’
campaign to save the venue.
AMP Capital had originally planned to replace the
ice rink with specialty shops and a car park

Mr Dominello announced on Saturday he’d requested and
secured an Interim Heritage Order from NSW Environment
Minister Gabrielle Upton, bypassing the usual protracted
process and community engagement requirements.
Controversial motion
The council also passed a controversial motion
by six votes to five to condemn Ryde MP
Victor Dominello for his “failure” on the issue, with
Liberal councillors and In-dependent Clr Roy Maggio
voting against the Dominello condemnation clause.
“Our resolution also confirms our position that an
Olympic-sized ice rink must be retained in any
redevelopment of the Macquarie Shopping Centre,”
Mayor Laxale said.
Despite pleas by Liberal Clr Sarkis Yedelian OAM not
to politicise the issue, councillors from the Labor Party
and The Greens blamed the state government for the
threat to the ice rink because state Government zoning
changes in 2014 allow AMP to build a maximum height
of 37 storeys on the ice rink site.
“This is political,” Greens Clr Edwina Clifton said.
“When a Liberal says I’m against overdevelopment I
just don’t believe it because the reality is that
Macquarie Park became a development precinct
under the state government and relying on a heritage
order to protect the ice rink is just weak.”
The Mayor vented his frustration at the council’s
inability to stop the development.
“A lot of residents came to last week’s council meeting
in the hope that their council can act on their behalf and
reject the development but the reality is that we
cannot, because the state government has taken
away our powers to do this,” he said.
The Mayor’s comments prompted Clr Maggio to ask
“what’s the point” of holding a council meeting at all.
“Here we go again, late night meetings, lots of staff,
lots of money and lots of time wasted,” he said.
“All we are doing is wasting time and money
with political stunts and embarrassing ourselves
because the whole development approval process
needs to change and this is a state government
process and a state political issue.”
Slav Baboshyn came from Russia to speak at the
meeting.
“I have seen how Moscow is changing and how all the
rich business people in Moscow have spent money on
beautiful things and on preserving Russia’s cultural
and sporting heritage and it makes you feel proud of
your country,” he said.
“But if you destroy beautiful things like this Olympic ice
rink and replace them with horrible
monster developments all you will have left in

Clr Ross Williams’ rant
about Liberals in TWT’s

January 16 is hypocritical
- it seems the
election is only ‘democratic’
if left-wing independents
are elected,
but not anyone else.
If he truly believed in local
democracy, he would
respect the rights of all
elected councillors to
take their seat - not just
the non-liberal ones.
As the mayoral candidate
with the least
amount of votes, Clr Williams
thinks it is his place
to lecture the community
on who they voted for.
I justified my comments
that councillors have
“failed the community”
when I voted against a
9.74 percent rate increase
and (unsuccessfully)
moved a motion that we
take a pay cut to match
the special rate variation.
Forget cost-shifting,
Clr Williams is only interested
in blame-shifting. I
think Hunters Hill Council
needs smart, fiscally-astute
councillors to fix the
broken budget.

Dear Sir,
It is urgent that all
Australian politicians
understand the dangers
in the Paris Climate
Agreement. Here are
TEN REASONS to EXIT
PARIS NOW:
The science is NOT settled
- hundreds of scientists
in Australia and thousands
more throughout
the world reject the theory
that human production of
carbon dioxide is driving
dangerous global warming.
And the 102 computerised
climate models have
always predicted more
warming than has occurred.
(They got it right
once, 39 years ago.)
There is no unusual
global warming. Since
the last ice age ended
there have been warm
eras hotter than today’s
modern warming – the
warm peaks are getting
lower, not higher. Climate
has always changed in
response to forces far
greater than human activities.
The endless procession
of man-made scare
campaigns about cooling,
warming, ice melting, sea
levels, ocean acidity, cyclones
and droughts have
all proved false.
Carbon dioxide is NOT
a pollutant – it is an invisible
natural gas that
supplies the whole food
chain. More carbon dioxide
is beneficial to the biosphere
- forests, grasses
and crops grow better
thus benefitting all animal
life that relies on plants.
The populous world nations
are unlikely to curb
their CO2 emissions –
China, India, Russia, Brazil,
USA, Japan, SE Asia,
Indonesia, Africa and the
Arab world will ignore
Paris limits.
Despite 20 years of favourable
promotion, subsidies,
taxes, targets and
propaganda the contribution
of the intermittent
energy producers (wind
and solar) to world energy
supplies is trivial – about
3%.
Australian energy policies,
taxes and targets are
making electricity more
costly and less reliable,
hurting consumers and
driving industry off-shore.
And once they have ruined
electricity and coal
their next targets will be
agriculture and motorists.
With no nuclear power,
no geothermal power, limited
hydro potential and
increasing barriers to gas
exploration, Australia has
few options except coal
for cheap reliable grid
power, and oil products
for transport.
With a huge continent,
a small population and
heavy reliance on exports,
each Australian will
be heavily penalised by
the Paris Agreement for
the emissions associated
with exports consumed
by others.
Compliance with the
Paris Agreement will destroy
industries and jobs,
encourage bureaucracy
and transfer controls and
money to affiliates of the
United Nations.
Should the world experience
even modest cooling
in the decades ahead
Australia will urgently
need increased supply of
reliable power for homes
and industry and the
global atmosphere will
need more carbon dioxide
plant food.

of Liz Savva at St Charles Borromeo
Church Ryde last Friday.

loved Scouts leader, teacher,

Liz (Elizabeth) was just
50 years young. But in that
short time she achieved
much. And she leaves behind
a Scouting family of
husband Tony (Trustee),
sons Rover Scouts Zac 22,
James 20 and 15 year-old
Scout daughter Aimee.
Liz grew up in Longueville
and married Tony in March
1993 and moved to Ryde in
March 1996.
She attended Monte St
Angelo College North Sydney
and Australian Catholic University. Her
first job was St Michael’s Catholic Primary
School Lane Cove 1989-93 then 1994-98

What does the Year Of The Pig hold for us?
The Pig is the youngest sibling of the 12 Chinese zodiac
animals and 2019 is the Year of the Yellow Earth Pig. Recent
years of the Pig are: 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995,
2007 and 2019. The prediction for this year is unfortunately
that it is going to be, overall, not such a good year, especially
due to the fact that history may repeat itself. Specifically, the
last Year of the Pig took place in 2007 which saw the start of
the global financial crisis. However, it all depends on your
own zodiac year, and whether it is compatible to the Year of
the Pig or not. The most compatible zodiacs are Tigers,
Rabbits and Goats while the least compatible are Snakes

What are the characteristics of people born in the Year

shopping at this time of the year for new clothes and shoes,
and put up New Year decorations. This may include
depictions of the Chinese Door God, or rhyming couplets
wishing good fortune and health on red paper. One other
tradition is to put a red packet under the pillow for good
fortune in the New Year. Of course, a ‘must do’ for New Year
is a reunion with family, with many members often travelling
long distances for the annual gathering.

Weekly Times Mr Dominello said that in
addition to the new high school community
feedback is sought on whether there
will be a brand new primary school or an
extension to the existing Melrose Park
Public School.
“Ryde is becoming an education powerhouse
and this new education precinct
is a step in that journey and great news
for parents”, Victor Dominello said.
The new education precinct will accompany
the already announced Meadowbank
Education Precinct, a new primary
school in Smalls Road already under construction,
rebuilding of Kent Road Public
School, rebuilding of Peter Board High
School formerly North Ryde High with a
new primary school, a new Catholic High
School at Ivanhoe Estate and a major upgrade
to West Ryde Public School.

Chinese New Year - Then and Now

Three decades ago, when we first arrived in the Eastwood/Epping area, there was only a small scattering
of residents of Chinese descent. Chinese New Year was a non-event, especially with work and school
resuming after Christmas and New Year.
All that changed with the steady inflow of Asian immigrants,
students and visitors, notably of Chinese and Korean
heritage. Shops, restaurants, eateries, services of all
kind have created a virtuous cycle of supply and demand;
with that comes patronage for cultural pursuits.
Thanks to the initiative of community leader Hugh Lee,
OAM, and ex-Ryde Councillor/Deputy Mayor Justin
Li, with the support of volunteers, sponsors and our local
MPs, the first Eastwood
Chinese New Year celebration
was launched in 2009.
Over the past ten years, the
event had grown in size, variety,
sponsorship and participation;
and 2018 saw the
10th anniversary celebration
of the best event ever.
As always, there was
cooking competition; the
multiple lion dance was
a highlight. It was also a
proud and moving sight
when Roseanna Gallo
OAM, Ryde’s very own
singer/songwriter of Italian
heritage, sang in Mandarin;
when performers from cultural
backgrounds as varied
as Anglo-Celtic, Chinese,
Indian, Japanese, Korean,
Lebanese and more, dressed
in their traditional or modern
costumes, kept the audience
enthralled.
Appropriately, Chinese
New Year is now called Lunar
New Year to embrace
other ethnic groups, including
the Koreans and Vietnamese.

MEADOWBANK Multi-Purpose Learning Centre has urged the community to get behind a campaign
to save it.
The learning centre
which cares for more than
250 tiny tots is under threat
of closure as part of a
state government project
to demolish the adjoining
Meadowbank Primary
School and replace it with
parkland.
With primary school students
now being relocated
within a new Meadowbank
TAFE education precinct,
learning centre spokeswoman
Gretha Reed fears
the same fate awaits her
students.
“Ryde MP Victor
Dominello said he thought
there was no reason why
we shouldn’t stay but has
given us no commitment
we will stay or any reason
why we should stay,” Ms
Reed said.
“We’ve been lobbying
him for more than five
months now and have
heard nothing and there
are families who do not
want to relocate their children
to the TAFE and who
want answers !”
In frustration, the learning
centre has turned to Opposition
Education spokesman
Jihad Dib for support
and he has promised a Labor
government will save
both the primary school
and the early learning centre
if elected next month.
“Unfortunately we are
fighting a government that
knows the cost of everything
but the value of nothing,”
Mr Dib said.
The learning centre is
a small cottage that has
been in Meadowbank for
32 years and has 37 local
staff members.
Eastwood Lunar New Year
moves onto Eastwood Oval
THIS month’s Lunar New Year celebration on Eastwood Oval will be a special event for families,
the Chairman of the Eastwood Lunar New Committee – Deputy Mayor Simon Zhou – told The
Weekly Times.
Previously held on Eastwood Plaza,
this year’s celebration will be held on
the Oval on Saturday, February 16
from 4pm to 9pm and will include music
and dance performances, martial
arts, dragons, lions, fire crackers and
a visit from the God of Fortune and
other costumed characters.
It will feature the traditional dragon
dance from 5.30pm before the community
parade at 6pm, stage shows
at 7.30pm and fireworks at 9pm.
This year is the Year of the Pig and
the special guest star on Eastwood
Oval will be Children’s TV sensation
Peppa Pig !
“The Eastwood Lunar New Year
Committee is absolutely thrilled to
have Peppa Pig coming to Eastwood
Oval from 4pm to meet children and
to perform on stage from 5pm,” Deputy
Mayor Zhou said.
“We want this to be wonderful day
for families and especially for children,
with many more carnival rides
and activities for children.
“That is one of the reasons why
we moved the celebration onto the
larger Eastwood Oval venue.
“Of course we continue to respect
the traditions of Lunar New Year in
Eastwood and we’ll continue to have
costumed performers, the lion dancers
and the firecrackers,” he said.
One of the challenges in preparing
the new look Lunar New Year has
been to draw on local and overseas
experiences.
“Our committee has also looked at
how Lunar New Year is celebrated in
other places in Sydney as well as it is
in China and in Korea,” he said.
“We strive for authenticity and heritage.
“This is why this year we are giving
prominence to having the lucky
colour red displayed as prominently
as we can.”
Deputy Mayor Zhou hopes the
event will provoke nostalgia with
families who grew up in China and
Korea and those who go there to visit
relatives.
“I am a first generation migrant
who grew up in China, so I strongly
remember Lunar New Year as a children’s
festival and how excited I was
as a child in the weeks leading up to
Lunar New Year day, when children
get presents and lucky money!” he
said.
“It is also a time when the middle
generation does the hard work to
serve the older generation, as well as
the children.”
Is there there a must see event ?
“For myself, I’m really looking forward
to the stage shows and this
year we’ll have a famous Chinese
Opera Star performing songs from
a classic Italian opera, alongside a
famous Korean Opera star,” Deputy
Mayor Zhou said.
“We’ve planned things very deliberately
to bring families from all our
cultures together for this celebration
and if Chinese families can meet and
befriend Korean families and other
families from our diverse multicultural
community no one will feel prouder
than I will.”

Macquarie Ice Rink saved
In a huge win for the
community, the owner of
Macquarie Centre – AMP
Capital – confirmed late
last week that any future
redevelopment of the
shopping centre will include
an Olympic-sized ice rink.
The announcement came just
days after the City of Ryde
held an extraordinary Council
meeting in which it expressed
its opposition to the proposed
closure of the Macquarie
Ice Rink and stated that
any redevelopment of the
shopping centre needed to
retain an Olympic-sized
ice rink.
I’d like to thank all the men,
women and children of Ryde
who signed petitions and
shared social media posts.
There’s a lot more work to do,
but this is a good first step.
Educating parents on
parking and traffic rules in
school zones
As kids start a new school
year, the City of Ryde has
launched a new education
program aimed at improving
compliance with parking and
traffic rules in school zones.
As part of this, Council’s new
School Zone Enforcement
Officers will patrol local
primary schools to provide
information to parents and

carers on parking and traffic
rules, particularly around Kiss
and Ride zones.
Throughout February, the
officers will also provide
information around primary
schools on potential parking
offenses and related fines,
and issue warnings to anyone
caught breaching parking or
traffic rules.
The education program is all
part of the City of Ryde’s aim
to improve pedestrian safety
around our local schools.
Seniors Festival begins
The NSW Seniors Festival
has begun and to mark the
occasion, the City of Ryde
has organised a month-long
program to celebrate the
value contribution seniors
make to our community.
We have a large number of
events planned throughout
the month including a Musical
Morning Tea, Art of Ageing
Exhibition and a number of
physical activity sessions
aimed specifically at seniors.

Slip, slop, slap for sun safety this summer
WITH a heatwave expected to continue around Lane Cove and across the State this month, business
owners are being reminded to prepare their outdoor workers for extreme heat and protect
against sun exposure.

Roberts said “the most recent data
shows work-related skin cancer
has cost NSW more than $12 million
over a decade.”
“There were 903 compensation
claims for work-related skin cancer
between 2006 and 2016,” Mr Roberts
said.
“Sadly, that included the deaths
of 12 NSW workers because of skin
cancer-related illness.”
“I can’t stress enough how important
it is for outdoor workers to take
care in the sun. In Australia, ultra
violet radiation is present every day
in varying levels of intensity, whether
it’s sunny, rainy or overcast.”
“No matter what your job is when
working outside, you need to wear
sun-safe clothing, a wide-brim hat,
sunglasses and at least SPF 30+
broad spectrum sunscreen.”
Businesses that employ outdoor
workers can download the Cancer
Council’s free SunSmart app. It
identifies key sun protection times
for all regions around the State and
provides two-hourly reminders to
re-apply sunscreen.
“It’s not just the sun workers need
to be wary of. Working in extreme
heat can be harmful and sometimes
even fatal,” Mr Roberts said.
Warning signs for heat-related
illness include fainting, confusion,
intense thirst, dizziness and muscle
cramps. If workers notice any
of these signs, they should move to
a cool place out of the sun, loosen
clothing, drink water and seek
medical advice.
“During extreme heat, employers
should do what they can to
minimise the risk. Where possible,
outside work should be relocated
so it is completed in a covered,
well-ventilated area,” Mr Roberts
concluded.

Top teamwork helps Gladesville Ryde Physie Ladies bring home Over 33s trophy
GLADESVILLE Ryde Physie really shone as a club in 2018 both in terms of awards and club spirit.
BJP Physie Team events
are one of the many highlights
of the Physie year.
“Being part of a team and
working on choreography,
timing and performance
elements together is a lot
of fun and develops an array
of different skills for girls
and ladies” says teacher
Janelle Mitchell.
“In 2018 we entered a record
number of teams from
5 Years through to Open
Ladies,” she said.
“The girls and ladies develop
the annual syllabus
choreography working as
a team of eight culminating
in competitions at the
State Sports Centre at
Olympic Park Homebush.
Thousands of girls and ladies
converge over different
weekends from around
Australia to compete in the
annual team events.
“We celebrated prizes
across all age groups including
second in 5-6
Years, third in 7-8 Years,
second in 11-12 Years,
second in Intermediate Ladies,
second in Over 50s
Ladies and to round out the
outstanding achievement
the Over 33 Ladies Team
was awarded first prize.
Such success only
comes from a fun and supportive
environment and
Gladesville Ryde Physie
is certainly proud to offer
such a positive dance

HUNTERS HILL Emeritus Mayor Richard Quinn will run as a independent
candidate for the seat of Lane Cove during next Month’s state election.
Mr Quinn officially announced
his candidacy
yesterday (Tuesday) following
his resignation from the
Liberal Party.
He aims to defeat sitting
Lane Cove MP Anthony
Roberts (Lib) who gained
67 per cent of the two party
preferred vote at the last
state election, but who also
saw a swing of 9.5 per cent
against him.
The widely respected
Emeritus Mayor Quinn is
yet to announce his election
promises, slogan or
campaign colour but was
straightforward about his
motivation to stand against
Mr Roberts.
“I want to advocate for
the Lane Cove electorate
in government, not advocate
for the government in
the Lane Cove !” Mr Quinn
exclusively told The Weekly
Times.
Mr Quinn currently works
in a public relations role at St
Joseph’s Catholic College in
Hunters Hill but rose to national
fame when he was the
Mayor of Hunters Hill during
the recent TWT backed
fight against the state government’s
failed attempt to
forced merger of Hunters Hill
and Lane Cove into Ryde.
He remains passionately
opposed to any forced
amalgamation without public
consultation and local approval.
“The very reason we
were so successfully able
to oppose the forced amalgamations
was the lack of
democracy and the lack of
consultation with the community
and this community
will not put up with that,” he
said.
“In parliament I will continue
to be a vocal advocate
for this community, doing
only what is in the best interests
of this community.”
He also rates his chances
as good and he points out
that recent local government
elections saw the Liberals
lose power across Northern
Sydney.
“I’m optimistic of a good
result in Lane Cove because
of the council results and
because of the huge swings
against the state government
in the Orange and
Wagga by elections, where
people voted for community
based candidates.
“People feel the government
is not listening to
them.”
Mr Quinn is widely known
for his controversial claim
the state government refuses
to move the radio active
waste in Nelson Parade,
Hunters Hill to to a western
Sydney treatment plant for
“political reasons”, to save
the Liberal held seat of Mulgoa.
If true, it could well prove to
be a costly political gamble
for the government which
can’t afford the loss of blue
ribbon seats like Lane Cove.
“Action from the government
on Nelson Parade has
been promised for years
and nothing has been done
and the waste material is still
there !” Mr Quinn said.
“It will be an election issue.”
He said voters are also
angry with the state government’s
new planning laws
which have taken away
councils’ planning powers
and given them to government
supported independent
planning panels.
Of particular concern are
the panels’ tendency to approve
developments on the
grounds of state government
compliance codes,
rather than respect and uphold
local objections.
“Discussing planning issues
and concerns will be
a strong part of my campaign,”
Mr Quinn said.
He declined to comment
on Labor Party speculation
that the government is
deliberately holding back
tens of thousands of dollars
in awarded legal costs to
Hunters Hill and Lane Cove
Councils in a bid to force
Hunters Hill into debt, triggering
an almost inevitable
forced merger with Ryde.
“One of the personal catalysts
in my decision to stand
as a candidate is that, more
than a year after Hunters Hill
and Lane Cove were awarded
these costs by the court,
they are still waiting for the
government money to come
through.”
The Emeritus Mayor is
strong advocate for democracy
and this “core belief”
touched on his reason for
quitting the Liberal Party.
“What is the point of being
a member of the Liberal
Party when its forums are a
sham, controlled by Liberal
party power brokers ?
“It is a party that does not
want to consult with its own
members and we saw that
during the forced amalgamations,
which came as a
sudden shock to us all.”
Mr Quinn received the
support of Save Hunters Hill
Municipality spokesman Phil
Jenkyn OAM last night.
“Richard Quinn is an outstanding
candidate who
was at the very forefront of
the campaign to stop the
forced mergers,” Mr Jenkyn
said.
“He is passionate about
our community, our unique
identity and our special
sense of place.
“On every level he has
demonstrated his integrity
and his ability to speak
clearly, responsibly and
powerfully for our local community.”

left arm pace bowler who
played Sheffield Shield
cricket with Victoria during
1951-52 and League
Cricket in England with
Warwickshire.
North Ryde wrapped
up the series last Sunday
and also secured the Laurie
Bosward Trophy with
a comprehensive victory
over Norton Oakes in the
second limited overs clash
in front of a big crowd at
North Ryde RSL Oval.
Skippered by Geoff
Cordner, the North Ryde
boys turned on the style
with Ben’s brother Tim
capping an emotional day
by smashing 98 off 139
balls that included four
sixes and four boundaries
in a tally of 5-243.
The day almost followed
the script perfectly with
Tim - who opened the batting
with his dad - needing
two runs for his cenury off
the second last ball only to
be dismissed.
Other contributors with
the bat were Kel Gray (79
runs off 78 balls featuring
four sixes and five boundaries)
and Michael Spackman
(31)
Ben’s father Geoff (1-1)
claimed the final Oakes
wicket as North Ryde
rolled the Poms for 80 to
clinch the Cup.
He was supported by
Cam Gordon (2-5), Richard
Ellis (2-17), Billy Flynn
(2-20), Dan Buttrey (2-37)
and Bill Furness (1-0).
Norton Oakes were best
served by Michael Simpson
(26 off 13 with four
boundaries and a six),
Luke Shutt (22) and Rob
Shaw who took 2-23 off
ten overs.
Earlier in the week promising
colt Matthew Voss
was a stand out as North
Ryde opened the series
with an emphatic five
wicket triumph over the
Poms.
Voss bagged the figures
of 5-12 and all rounder
Shane Bell (3-26) to help
rout the English tourists for
115, with the experienced
Chris Baker and Matthew
Burgin both scoring 21.
The talented Bell carved
out a stylish 41, John
Mathie (20) and Rory
Bresnahan (11 not out)
as the home side posted
5-116 to draw first blood
in the series.
Baker (3-17) was the pick
of the English bowlers.
At the innings interval,
North Ryde RSL Cricket
Club patron John Bosward
unveiled a special plaque
to honour the contributions
from the Kennedy
family to the Cricket Club
on behalf of Eddie Kennedy.
The southern end of
North Ryde RSL’s cricket
pitch is now known as
“The Kennedy End”.
Geoff and Linda described
Ben as “a young
man whose positive influence
upon the world
around him in such a short
space of time continues to
amaze us.”
“We are so proud of
him,” they said.
“Ben was admired by his
brother Tim, adored by his
girlfriend Laura and much
loved by his grandmothers
Gwen and Pam.
A celebration of Ben’s extraordinary
life will be held
next Wednesday February
13 at Epping Boys High
School, 213 Vimiera Road,
Eastwood at 2.30pm.

Rodgers run spree to no avail
A BATTING milestone by stylish opener Matthew Rodgers was a bright spot for Sydney
first grade cricket team after last weekend’s disappointing loss to Hawkesbury in the
2018-19 NSW Premier Cricket competition.
The in-form Rodgers
carved out fine knocks
of 50 and 102 as the
Tigers fell victim to a
damp first day pitch
- crashing to a first
innings defeat at the
hands of the Hawks at
Drummoyne Oval.
It is a setback for the
Sydney team who drop
to fourth spot on the
ladder on 44 points behind
leaders Sydney

North Sydney (49) and
Penrith (47).
Persistent rain caused
havoc for the Tigers who
were rolled for 90 after
23 overs with the prolific
Rodgers chalking up a
crucial half century.
