At the Airfield by Rik Lonsdale 

‘Tell me honestly, Ben, do you love me?’ 

‘I don’t know why you’re asking me that, Trisha.’ 

‘Isn’t it obvious why?’ 

‘No, not really.’ 

‘Well, you’ve never actually said those three little words.’ 

‘What three little words?’ 

‘Now you’re teasing me. You know which words I mean.’ And Trisha gave Ben a playful 

thump on the arm. 

Ben feigned serious injury, clutching his shoulder and exclaiming loudly that she’d 

committed a serious assault. And he pulled that hurt face that Trisha could only ever respond 

to with laughter. 

‘But I’m serious, really I am,’ said Trisha. ‘We’ve been going out together for eighteen 

months now, and I don’t want to live my life in limbo. You know how I feel about you, but 

you’ve never really told me.’ 

Trisha knew Ben wasn’t the type to wear his heart on his sleeve. He liked to think things 

through and be certain before making decisions. That was one of the reasons she liked him so 

much. 

‘I have been thinking about us a lot lately,’ he said. 

‘Is that why you’ve brought me out here. I must say, I can think of many more romantic 

spots than this.’ Then Trisha fell silent at the implications of what she said. 

If he really loved her wouldn’t they be somewhere exotic, maybe Paris, or Rome, instead of 

the café at Compton Abbas airfield. Trisha’s heart sank. Maybe this was it between them. A 

shame, she really liked Ben as a person as well as loved him. But she wasn’t going to be strung 

along not knowing what was happening. If Ben didn’t feel the same way it was best it was over. 

Yes, it would hurt, and Trisha felt her eyes begin to fill. She excused herself to regain her 

composure. She was not going to cry in front of Ben. 

When Trisha returned Ben was standing at the window staring across the airfield towards 

Shaftesbury. She quietly stood next to him. Eventually Ben turned to her. 

‘Will you come outside with me? There’s something I must tell you and I can’t do it in here.’ 

‘But it’s the middle of February, it’s freezing out there.’ 

‘Please, Trisha, it won’t take long.’ 

Is this it? Thought Trisha as she followed him out towards the airfield. There was a bitter 

breeze from the North East, and the temperature was near freezing. She shivered, both 

inwardly and outwardly, but steeled herself for whatever she was about to hear. 

‘Okay what do you want to say, I don’t want to freeze.’ 

Ben was about to speak when the roar of aeroplane engines made speech impossible. He 

stood beside Trisha and pointed. A plane was 

making a low pass of the airfield trailing a banner. 

“Will you marry me” it spelled out in huge 

letters. 

Trisha turned to Ben, her head a whirl of 

confusion, but he pointed at a second aircraft 

towing another banner. 

“PS I love you, Trisha” it said.

Thank you, Gillingham, 

Gillingham community came together on Christmas Day to provide meals for over 30 guests at the 

Methodist Church Hall, 9 members of Rawson Court and 13 members of the community unable to 

make the day had meals taken to their homes. Everyone received a Christmas card along with an 

array of presents, thanks to the kind generosity of local people and all went home with a hamper 

from Virginia Hayward along with slices of cake and treats to last well into the New Year

Even before the day many people had been involved in the 

build-up and preparation and the wonderful decorating of the 

hall on Christmas Eve. As guests arrived they were welcomed 

by an incredible collaboration of local singers and choir 

members who led us all in familiar favourite carols. Mayor Sue 

Hunt then thanked the volunteers and opened the lunch 

. 

The guests tucked into a wonderful 3 course meal with soup, 

turkey, pigs in blankets, fabulous roasties, parsnips, carrots 

and of course sprouts. To finish off there was cheese cakes, 

chocolate cake, rhubarb crumble, chocolate fudge brownie and 

lemon meringue pie, shortbread, mince pies and plenty of juice 

or tea and coffee to wash it all down. Some fantastic servers 

and waiters dished the meal out and made sure everyone had 

everything they wanted. 

Father Christmas made an unscheduled stop on his way home 

to Lapland to hand out presents to our guests. Then No Fixed 

Abode took to the floor, with guests joining in old favourites and 

singing along. In the background an army of volunteers cleared, 

washed and dried plates, bowls, cutlery, made up party bags for 

each guest to take home with Christmas cards made by Topsie 

Rabbit and St Mary the Virgin Nursery children.

On a personal note, young people oen get a bad press but we were blown away by the number of

Spoil your Valentine with this decadent brunch 

Preparation time: 15 mins 

Cooking time: 20 mins 

Serves: 4 (or 2 really hungry people!) 

Ingredients 

4 eggs 

2 tbsp white wine vinegar 

2 English muffins or two bagels, halved 

Butter for spreading 

8 slices smoked salmon 

Chopped chives, to serve 

For the hollandaise sauce 

2 tsp lemon juice 

2 tsp white wine vinegar 

3 egg yolks 

125g unsalted butter, cubed 

Method 

Hollandaise Sauce: Pour the lemon juice and vinegar 

into a small bowl, add the egg yolks and whisk with a 

balloon whisk until 

light and frothy. 

Place the bowl 

over a pan of 

simmering water 

and continue to 

whisk until the 

mixture thickens. 

Add the butter a 

small amount at a 

time, whisking constantly until the sauce is thick. If it 

looks like it might be splitting, remove from the heat and 

continue to whisk. Season with salt and pepper then 

and keep warm. 

Poached eggs: bring a large pan of water to the boil and 

add the vinegar. Lower the heat so that the water 

simmers very gently. Stir the water a little so you create 

a gentle whirlpool effect, then slide in the eggs one by 

one. Cook each for about 4 mins, then remove with a 

slotted spoon. Handy hint - you will see the eggs begin 

to rise in the water as they reach completion. 

Lightly toast and butter the muffins or bagels, then place 

a couple of slices of the smoked salmon on each half. 

Top each with an egg, then spoon over your 

Hollandaise and garnish with chopped chives.
