Membership Secretary It’s that time again. Unless you joined after the start of this year your membership will be due for renewal on 1 April. We’re repeating the system that we’ve used in recent years. If you pay by Standing Order you will find an orange slip reminding you of this, and you don’t need to take any further action. If you normally pay by cheque, you’ll find the usual renewal notice. Please think about paying by BACS or by Standing Order – it makes life so much easier for us, especially now that Barclays have closed the Wareham branch. If you pay by BACS transfer, then please let me know (phone or email will do) so that we know what payments to expect on our bank statements. The Chairman Writes In the last Newsletter I mentioned that Secretary Keith Southern and I meet regularly with our opposite numbers from other Supporter Groups in Dorset and across the South-West. At our last couple of meetings some groups have indicated that they may not be able to continue and will be closing down. There is a repeated pattern that groups have a healthy membership, but find it impossible to find people who are willing to be active in running events or taking on administrative roles. I’m pleased to say that we appear to be bucking this trend. Following our appeal for more help we’ve gained two new volunteers who are already actively organising outings, namely Pat Daniell and Janice Tait. Virginia Claridge has also come forward to assist our Treasurer, Ken Morgan, who faces an exceptionally busy period with a major commitment elsewhere. THANKS FOR ALL THE HARD WORK At our April AGM two Committee members will be stepping down from their roles. Venn Goldsack stepped down from her role as Editor of this Newsletter a few editions ago. She has continued to organise events and has remained on the main Committee, where we have been grateful for her experience and expertise. Venn has now decided that the time is right to step down from that, although she will remain on the Events Committee. We set up the Events Committee in 2010 to co-ordinate the organisation of talks, social events and outings (and later holidays). Margaret Tyrer stepped up to chair that Committee after several years as Publicity Secretary. Under Margaret’s guidance the number and range of activities that we offer you has grown steadily, and we have become the envy of many other groups. Many of you will know that, as well as being Chair, Margaret organised many outings and social events herself and was responsible for last autumn’s memorable holiday based in Liverpool. Thank you, Margaret, for all your enthusiasm and hard work. I’m pleased to say that, like Venn, Margaret isn’t stepping down completely, as she will still be organising the 2020 annual holiday. She will be handing over the Chair’s role to Jill Benwell. Les Wright - Chairman 3
