The Chairman Writes
In the last Newsletter I mentioned that Secretary Keith Southern and I meet regularly
with our opposite numbers from other Supporter Groups in Dorset and across the
South-West. At our last couple of meetings some groups have indicated that they may
not be able to continue and will be closing down. There is a repeated pattern that
groups have a healthy membership, but find it impossible to find people who are willing
to be active in running events or taking on administrative roles.
I’m pleased to say that we appear to be bucking this trend. Following our appeal for
more help we’ve gained two new volunteers who are already actively organising
outings, namely Pat Daniell and Janice Tait. Virginia Claridge has also come forward to
assist our Treasurer, Ken Morgan, who faces an exceptionally busy period with a major
commitment elsewhere.
THANKS FOR ALL THE HARD WORK
At our April AGM two Committee members will be stepping down from their roles.
Venn Goldsack stepped down from her role as Editor of this Newsletter a few editions
ago. She has continued to organise events and has remained on the main Committee,
where we have been grateful for her experience and expertise. Venn has now decided
that the time is right to step down from that, although she will remain on the Events
Committee.
We set up the Events Committee in 2010 to co-ordinate the organisation of talks, social
events and outings (and later holidays). Margaret Tyrer stepped up to chair that
Committee after several years as Publicity Secretary. Under Margaret’s guidance the
number and range of activities that we offer you has grown steadily, and we have
become the envy of many other groups.
Many of you will know that, as well as being Chair, Margaret organised many outings
and social events herself and was responsible for last autumn’s memorable holiday
based in Liverpool. Thank you, Margaret, for all your enthusiasm and hard work.
I’m pleased to say that, like Venn, Margaret isn’t stepping down completely, as she will
still be organising the 2020 annual holiday. She will be handing over the Chair’s role to
Jill Benwell.
Les Wright - Chairman
Tredegar House, which we’ll visit on our holiday in Wales (p10)
The Royal Mint which we’ll also visit on our holiday in Wales (p10), but
sadly we won’t be getting this close to the action
In spring this year we will be venturing to Kent to visit some important houses,
interesting both historically and architecturally. We set off with North Dorset coaches
recreated by the passion and money of William Waldorf Astor. Much history to ponder
upon and a wonderful garden to explore. By the end of the afternoon we will book into
Donnington Manor Hotel on the outskirts of Sevenoaks on a dinner, bed and breakfast
basis for our two-night stay.
The next day we will be able to make an early start to explore the wonders of Knole an
historic property ’’the forgotten palace of England’’ where, during the last three years
the National Trust has undertaken a huge programme of conservation. The present
house, dating from 1456, sits within a deer roamed parkland and is ‘’the most utterly
old of English houses’’. An amazing place to visit, so much to absorb and so involved
with the nation’s history. If, during the day, anyone has a need to return to the present
century, Sevenoaks is there to explore before we return to our nearby hotel.
On our final day we will visit Penshurst Place the home of one of history’s most
glittering figures – Sir Phillip Sidney, the beau ideal of Elizabethan times. A magnificent
property still in the possession of the family, the present owner being Viscount
De L’Isle. A wonderful collection of treasures to amaze us and gardens to enjoy.
The cost of the trip may appear high as hotel accommodation is very expensive in this
part of England and we must pay admission to Hever Castle and Penshurst Place but
our visits should be of great interest to PANT members.
And finally
Some of our recent talks had unexpectedly large audiences, and we think that
this is because we have gained extra publicity. In some cases we’ve contacted
local interest groups, and in one case a local group had put the talk on their
Facebook page.
This all helps our fundraising. In effect every non-member who attends a talk
gives us an extra £3, and this mounts up quickly. All this leads up to me asking
for members’ help in two ways.
Firstly, could you look through our forthcoming talks, on page 19. If you know
of a group that might be interested in a particular talk, then please let me know.
Secondly, does anyone out there know much about
Facebook? My wife and I have our own page, but we really
only use it to track the activities of the children and
grandchildren of our family and friends overseas. Would it
be worth starting a PANT page? Are there places we could
post our talks? If you know anything about this, then please contact me – I’d
welcome some advice.
Our current publicity for talks is via posters, and listings in the Spotlight section
of The Purbeck Gazette. We’re always looking for new sites for posters.
Swanage is particularly difficult, so if you spot somewhere that we could put a
poster, please let me know. It doesn’t have to be a shop window - perhaps you
have a window in your house that can be seen from the street, or somewhere
in you front garden. It needn’t even be your own house, it could just be that of
a friend or neighbour.
