how we met contest
One-of-a-kind love story takes home top prize
Murphy
The Stein family, of Northbrook
Meet Murphy, this week’s
Pet of the Week. Murphy is a
6-year-old goldendoodle who
acts like a puppy. He loves
to play with his best friend,
Kaner, and is always seeking
a game of chase. When we
come home, Murphy greets us with excitement and
always brings us a toy. At around 7:30 every night,
Murphy will stand in front of the freezer and patiently
wait to receive his evening snack (a frozen Kong with
filled with a banana or peanut butter). He’s super
smart and sweet and when groomed, looks like a
teddy bear. He’s been a great addition to our family!
PLEASE HELP! The Tower needs Pet of the Week submissions!
Meeting that special someone
is among the most wonderful moments
in our lives. Our love story of
how it all began is one of our most
well-worn narratives, and often one
we enjoy telling family, friends and
pretty much anyone who will listen.
And here at The Northbrook Tower,
we love listening — especially
around this time of year. Just like
most, we love hearing a classic love
story.
A few weeks back, I shared a love
story that was close to my heart and
challenged readers to submit their
own beautiful anecdotes for The
Tower’s annual How We Met Contest.
Once again, Northbrook residents
delivered some amazing entries,
making the decision incredibly difficult.
We received many great submissions,
and our team of editorial
judges was torn until the last minute.
After much deliberation, a love
story that starts in an unusual setting
and with a “strange” meeting stole
our hearts.
The Tower selected the entry of
Northbrook resident Amy Jump as
the winner of this year’s How We
Met Contest.
For their winning entry, Amy and
Ryan Jump will receive a $50 gift
certificate to Northbrook’s Trattoria
Oliverii. The Tower would like to
thank the restaurant for its gracious
support of the contest.
The Jumps have lived in Northbrook
for 14 years, and have three
sons.
So, without further ado, here’s
the winning entry: The love story of
Amy and Ryan Jump.
‘What a ride it’s been’
Submitted by Amy Jump
“This Feb. 13 will be my 20th anniversary,
and I am pretty sure no
one has met their Valentine in such
a strange way. I remember the day
we met very clearly, like it was yesterday.
My boss had a candidate coming
in and she had a conflict in her
schedule. She asked if I could be her
back up and if I could take a candidate
out in the field to show him
how to cold call a building. He had
just graduated from college and I
was one year out already. I was doing
this as a favor for my boss and
beyond annoyed for this interruption
in my day. Enter Ryan.
We jumped on a bus and went
to my territory. I picked a smaller
building and we rode the elevator
from floor to floor dropping information
— how hard can it be?
I so clearly remember how much
he made me laugh! He was hysterical
and it was the most fun I had
ever had cold calling.
It went much faster than anticipated,
so to fill the time that I was
supposed to be showing him the
ropes, I took him bra shopping at
Marshall Fields. I was heading on
a trip and needed a new bra for my
beach vacation.
A little surprised, yet unable to
argue with the experienced girl, he
diligently came along. He waited
so patiently and never complained
a bit. I still remember him leaning
on one of the racks, likely thinking I
was nuts. We finally said our goodbyes
and I sent him on his way. I
returned to the office and when my
boss asked what I thought, I said:
“with a last name like Jump, he has
to be cool!” The rest is history.”
Another favorite
Many entries we received put a
smile on the faces of our judges.
We’re able to include one more of
our favorites for your enjoyment,
although we wish we could include
more. If you would like to see more
love stories that were submitted to
The Tower, please visit Northbrook-
The Tower would like to thank
everyone that took the time to share
their love stories with us. Here’s a
submission from Northbrook resident
Erin Kaya.
‘A lifelong adventure’
The Tower selected the love story of
Northbrook residents Amy and Ryan
Jump as the winner of this year’s
How We Met Contest. The couple
recently celebrated its 20th wedding
anniversary. Photo Submitted
“This is the love story of how
a girl from Northbrook (went to
GBN) met a mountaineer/adventure
guide in Turkey.
In 2005, I was traveling with my
brother through Italy, Greece and
Turkey. We went to Olympos, Antalya,
Turkey (South Turkey) and
wanted to take an adventure tour.
The hotel suggested that we go on
a canyon tour (swimming and hiking
through a canyon).
The following day we went on
the tour. Ridvan Kaya was our tour
guide. He was sexy and adventurous!
I ended up going back and
forth to Turkey for three years. We
got married on the beach in Antalya,
two years to the day after we met.
Today we live in Northbrook with
two children. Antalya, 9, and Aydin,
6.
(Antalya is the city we met and
Aydin is a city on the west coast.
Both are gorgeous beach towns).
I’m still on an adventure!”
