As the editor of The
Lockport Legend, I
wear many hats.
Daily tasks range from
writing feature stories to
photographing events to interacting
with readers on the
phone or in the office. I enjoy
some of these responsibilities
more than others, but
“This is our first time and
hopefully it’s just laying the
groundwork for more opportunities
for us, so we’re
really excited about it,”
there are few that put a smile
on my face like judging our
annual Valentine’s Day Coloring
Contest.
I have joked with coworkers
in the past that it’s our
“most important job duty,”
because it offers such a lighthearted
distraction from
the chaos that swirls in the
newsroom on deadline day.
But regardless of whether
playing art judge for a day is
our “most important” task, I
can say personally it is one
of my favorites.
The creativity of the participants
is the first thing
that jumps out when sifting
through the entries, with
some choosing simple, elegant
designs and others
going with more detailed
drawings. Each entry has
its own charm, and while
we do judge and select three
winners based on creativity
and neatness, all of the valentines
are appreciated by
our staff as well as the local
veterans to whom we send
them.
This year’s Lockport winners,
which are featured on
Page 14 of this week’s issue,
each played into the
veterans theme in its own
way and stood out for its
creativity and neatness. It
was a tough decision to
make, though, as there were
a number of entries worthy
of consideration. Although
I hate that there can only
be three winners, I’m comforted
by the fact that all of
the entries will be sent to
people who have served our
country.
Valentine’s Day means
different things to different
people, and while we can
argue about the holiday’s
Hallmark-ization, it has a
positive theme at its nexus:
love. Valentine’s Day offers
an outlet through which we
can express our love for one
another, and while that love
is often directed toward a
significant other, we also
can take the opportunity to
show our family, friends or
even people we’ve never
met that we love and appreciate
them.
After this paper went to
print, it was immediately
time to look forward to our
Feb. 21 issue and get started
on all the tasks that go into
producing that paper. But I’ll
just have to wait until next
year for my favorite task to
return.
