The Mama Glass Scholarship
Fund will host a
fundraiser from 7-10 p.m.
March 2 at Ten Ninety
Brewing Co. to raise money
to help a Glenbrook
South student with college
costs.
Since Carolyn “Mama”
Glass’s passing in 2010,
her family and Glenbrook
South High School have
overseen a scholarship
fund in her honor.
The scholarship is awarded
to a graduating student
who over their four years
in school exemplified what
Mama stood for: school
spirit, leadership and a dedication
to the Titan family.
Mama extolled those values
at Glenbrook South for
38 years, starting in 1968.
She began her career
as a paraprofessional and
teacher’s aide. In 1970,
she was asked to help lead
cheers at football games.
It was here that students
decided, referring to a
popular singer at the time,
that “the world has Mama
Cass, but we have Mama
Glass.” The name stuck.
Shortly after, she became
Pep Club adviser and
developed into a trusted
confidante to many.
For 35 years, students
sought her advice, knowing
they had no stronger
advocate.
She was a fixture in
the halls, the cafeteria, at
plays and the variety show.
And, of course, at sporting
events, where she led the
student body in cheers.

are $40 in advance or
$45 at the door. The fee includes
one drink and light
appetizers.

City debates salting policy
for remainder of busy
season
The past few weeks
have brought frigid temperatures,
an abundance
of snow and ice and have
kept the Lake Forest Public
Works employees
working overtime on the
weekends.
During the Lake Forest
City Council meeting
Monday, Feb. 4, Mike
Thomas, the director of
public works, gave a presentation
on where the
City stands with salt usage
and overtime expenses this
year.
“We initially thought
it was going to be great
through mid-January and
then something changed,”
Thomas said.
Public Works has
$170,000 budgeted for
overtime, and started with
2,400 tons of salt. As of
Monday’s meeting there is
only 500 tons of salt left,
but the City will receive
950 tons more of salt.
For the 2018-19 season,
Lake Forest has already
seen 11 snow events, 35.5
inches of snow and used
1,885.99 tons of salt and
spent $150,129.27 in overtime
expenses for public
works employees to plow
and salt the roads.
In comparison to last
year at this time, Lake Forest
saw 12 snow events,
20.25 inches of snow and
used 1,167.96 tons of salt
and spent $62,170.58 on
overtime.
