African Drums Vol. 2
The pieces composed by percussionist Madou Djembe (Mamadou Sanou) are based on traditional West
African rhythms. On this album he shows his virtuosity while using the rich possibilities of the drum
to speak of his doubts, joys, dreams, and family. This talented singer, composer, and songwriter from
Burkina Faso first made music as a child by playing on tin cans; at the age of 13 he left his family in
order to escape an arranged marriage. He existed by taking a series of casual jobs, before his talent was
noticed when he was playing for the celebration of a baptism. By the 1990s he was playing with the
stars, including MC Solaar, Sinsemilila, Kounda, Youssou N’Dour, Guem, Peter Gabriel, and others.
