shortly after World War II and maintained it well into the 21 st century, 

developed distinctive and equally fluent styles on both tenor and alto

• Both Albert Mangelsdorff & François Jeanneau were guests 

on Jazz live, and this new release in the Swiss Radio Days series 

presents some examples of their excellent appearances. 

• The first time Mangelsdorff appeared, in 1967, the group played a 

series of standards in the mainstream style. In 1972, however, he 

suggested that they play two half-hour sets without any specific 

written material, and the evening was both relaxed and exciting. A 

recording of that concert’s first set is included here. 

• Janneau was the first Frenchman invited for a Jazz live concert. 

He sent a series of themes, and said that it was free music. But the 

themes definitely had harmony structures, as well as a form. The 

group was excited by this challenge of filtering unknown results 

from very traditional pieces, accepting the composed patterns solely 

as a general reference point and not as binding structures.

First time on CD—Sandra Church, the original Gypsy Rose Lee in the 1959 Broadway production 

of Gypsy, on the same CD with the iconic and legendary Queen of Burlesque! Lee made an LP of 

naughty songs in 1958, and Church recorded an LP of similar material in 1960. This CD combines 

both! From her dazzling rise as a stripper in 1931 until her demise in 1970, Gypsy Rose Lee was

turned down the career his parents had intended for him and went to Paris 

on his own. This is where he found his calling in music, becoming a jaw 

harp virtuoso as well as an inspired composer. 

• One of the oldest musical instruments in the world, the jaw harp is to be found 

in many cultures. Its ancient roots bear witness to its magical essence. The 

chinese harp, called kouxian (formerly huang) has survived amongst most 

chinese minorities since the 14 th century. It is commonly used to express love. 

He is also a master of the gourd flute, another ancient chinese instrument.

• In 1976, the 20 th Century Steel Band released their debut Warm Heart, Cold 

Steel. It proved to be a landmark album, and featured the track “Heaven & Hell 

Is On Earth,” sampled on J-Lo’s huge hit “Jenny from the Block.” 

• The band’s appearance on New Faces in 1974 (the equivalent of American 

Idol) catapulted them to fame. They won a lucrative recording deal with the 

now-defunct united Artists, and were invited onto Tv and radio programs, 

including a session on the late John Peel’s radio show. Sadly, the band split 

up shortly after. 

• Now, after 30 years, original members Michael Oliviere and godfran Moore 

have reformed the group with a new line-up and are re-releasing their seminal 

album on Mr Bongo records. Warm Heart, Cold Steel is an upbeat, feel-good 

album of 13 tracks recorded against a backdrop of seductive steel drum. 

• The infectious, instantly recognizable hook of the heavily sampled track 

“Heaven & Hell” has appeared in Black Eyed Peas’ “Say Goodbye,” Xzibit’s 

“los Angeles Times,” LL Cool J’s “Todd Smith,” and Salt-n-Pepa’s “very 

Necessary,” to name just a few. 

• Although sampling 20CSB was widespread, it was also done without the 

band’s knowledge or permission. composer Michael Oliviere successfully 

sued for unpaid royalties, and received recognition for his contribution to 

music with awards from BMI and AScAP.
