JAMES MOODY
March 26, 1925 – December 9, 2010
“James Moody, who began his career with the trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie
shortly after World War II and maintained it well into the 21 st century,
developed distinctive and equally fluent styles on both tenor and alto
saxophone, a relatively rare accomplishment in jazz … The National
Endowment for the Arts named him a Jazz Master in 1998. His last album,
Moody 4B, was recorded in 2008 and released this year on the IPO label; it
earned a Grammy nomination this month.” — New York Times
• Both Albert Mangelsdorff & François Jeanneau were guests
on Jazz live, and this new release in the Swiss Radio Days series
presents some examples of their excellent appearances.
• The first time Mangelsdorff appeared, in 1967, the group played a
series of standards in the mainstream style. In 1972, however, he
suggested that they play two half-hour sets without any specific
written material, and the evening was both relaxed and exciting. A
recording of that concert’s first set is included here.
• Janneau was the first Frenchman invited for a Jazz live concert.
He sent a series of themes, and said that it was free music. But the
themes definitely had harmony structures, as well as a form. The
group was excited by this challenge of filtering unknown results
from very traditional pieces, accepting the composed patterns solely
as a general reference point and not as binding structures.
The Hottest of the Philip Lewis Rhythm Maniacs Recordings
In May 1940 Arthur Lally was found dead at his home, presumably suicide. This was a tragic and
premature end to a distinguished career as a fine musician and arranger, because the jazz-flavored sound
of the Philip Lewis Rhythm Maniacs sessions owed much to the saxophonist. The recordings on
this CD are among the very best examples of his work.
Terry Callier feat. Massive Attack
Hidden Conversations
Following Terry Callier’s performance at last year’s Meltdown Festival (curated by Massive
Attack), the artist has once again hooked up with the British trip-hop trio! On Hidden
Conversations, MA’s Robert Del Naja co-wrote “Wings” and “John Lee Hooker,” and exclusively
wrote “Live With Me.” The collaboration of Massive Attack’s haunting production and Callier’s
beautiful, emotive vocals is, quite simply, stunning. A jazz/folk legend, Callier has worked with
Curtis Mayfield, Paul Weller, Beth Orton, Zero7, Groove Amada, and more.
possibilities of modern piano music. As a Japanese woman living in Europe, Takase has developed
a fresh view of American jazz. She doesn’t think in terms of the opposition of old and new worlds,
but creates her own. Her interpretations of Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman, Carla Bley, and
Thelonious Monk can be edgy, hard, and sharp, but also soft and playful.
Discover the real David Murray with this stunning 2-DVD set!
The real David Murray might just be hiding in this double DvD
set! There is a strange paradox running through these three films:
when we watch them, we don’t learn so much about the man,
but a lot about his music. Yet this is surely where the true David
Murray lies: “I’m a jazzman: don’t look elsewhere, don’t mistake
me for someone else. Everything I have to say is in my music; it
talks about me and the world...”
DAViD MURRAY, i’M A JAZZMAn (2008 - 53’)
A slice of life captured by the camera, and a privileged testimony
of a life merged with the story of jazz. Features Cassandra
Wilson, gwo Ka Masters, Amiri Baraka, and more.
DAViD MURRAY AnD THE gWO KA MASTERS -
LiVE in SAinTE LUCiE (2008 - 46’)
This film, shot during a stopover in the West Indies, restores
the energy of a masterful concert performed with traditional
Guadeloupian drums fused with supremely avant garde jazz.
DAViD MURRAY BLACK SAinT QUARTET LiVE AT
BAnLiEUES BLEUES FESTiVAL (2010 - 38’)
A film in the form of a style exercise, or an exercise with style,
pertinence, and sensitivity, like a mirror in which jazz would be
reflected. Featuring Lafayette gilchrist (p), Jaribu Shahid (b),
and Hamid Drake (d).
“Few musicians in jazz history have proven more vigorously
productive and resourceful than David Murray. During the past
35 years, from the moment he first visited New York as a 20-yearold
student, playing in a walkup loft in 1975, David has careened
forward in a cool, collected, rocket-fueled streak.” —Gary Giddins
“One of the most innovative and inventive musicians in jazz.”
— BBC Radio 3
“The most widely recorded saxophonist of his generation, David
Murray’s brawny tenor has been heard in a dizzying array of
configurations.” — All About Jazz
Antonio Forcione Quartet
In Concert
The “Jimi Hendrix of the acoustic guitar” live in concert from the Trinity Theatre in London!
Antonio Forcione has drawn worldwide critical acclaim as one of the world’s most inventive and
dexterous guitar virtuosos, and his debut live recording with his quartet captures the brilliance of
his compositions in a myriad of guitar styles. Recorded and mixed by Grammy winner Martin
Levan, famous for his sound production work on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph, Cats, and
Phantom of the Opera.
Antonio Foricione: guitars, oudan/Jenny Adejayan: cello/Nathan Thomson: double bass/
Adriano Adewale: percussion
Track Listing: Intro • Heart Beat • Tears of Joy • Attempo • African Dawn • Sahara Rain • Night
Passage • Indian Cafe • Tarantella • Maurizio’s Party
Paul Wertico Trio
Another Side
Before moving back to Naim, Paul Wertico’s previous trio discs were multi-tracked, heavily
layered & recorded, and mixed over a period of several months. In contrast, Another Side was
recorded live to two-track in a day and a half, with no mixing. Wertico’s goal was to show a more
even-tempered version of the trio’s music, and to produce an album that could be comfortably
listened to all the way to the end without extreme emotional variations.
Paul Wertico: drums, percussion/John Moulder: guitar/Brian Peters: bass, organ
Track Listing: The Big Organ • Children of the Night • Little Creatures • A Slow Stroll Round a
Black Hole • Brian’s B.S. (Bass Solo) • O Man • Ain’t No Thing (Drum Intro) • Sticks & Stones •
Jim Gailloretto’s Split Decision
Shadow Puppets
Jim Gailloretto’s rich, smooth tones and thought-provoking yet accessible improvisations are
newcomers to Naim, although he is no stranger to making wonderful and critically acclaimed
albums, having played on Kurt Elling’s Grammy-nominated disc Man in the Air. Much
of Shadow Puppets features tunes that were transcribed originally from a session of total
improvisation completed with Chicago drummer Jeff Stitley.
Gurunam Singh
Crimson Sadhana
Bearing an expressive voice and a powerful sense of reverence, Gurunam Singh’s music is a
journey of spirit, traveled by way of the heart. This disc presents six mantras, each very intimate
and personal in its execution, as if you are joining the artist for a private prayer session. Gurunam’s
chant is uplifted by a serene backdrop of instrumentation, which includes a mix of Eastern (tabla,
harmonium, udu) and Western (guitar, cello) sounds.
Track Listing: Wah Yantee (Universal Consciousness) • Mool Mantra (Prosperity) • Sat Siri Siri Akal
(Victory) • Rakhe Rakhanhar (Protection) • Wahe Guru (Divine Blessings) • Guru Ram Das (Healing)
Mirabai Ceiba
The Cycle of Life
Mirabai Ceiba is a chant duo not to be missed. Their music has a unique softness and a sense of
laid-back beauty that stands in contrast to many of their contemporaries. You can almost imagine
Angelika Baumbach and Markus Sieber sitting on a solitary beach, watching the waves as they
chant lovingly to God. Cycle of Life contains three extended mantras. The music includes the gentle
strumming of harp and guitar, along with cello, ney, percussion, and piano.
Track Listing: Kirtan Kriya–Sa Ta Na Ma • Healing Ra Ma Da Sa • Savasana

— New York Times
“What’s the great appeal? You won’t find songs about rainbows
is all about telling it like it is, with an urban edge and themes
universal to all children.” — Entertainment Weekly
Gypsy Rose Lee & Sandra Church
Gypsy Meets Gypsy
First time on CD—Sandra Church, the original Gypsy Rose Lee in the 1959 Broadway production
of Gypsy, on the same CD with the iconic and legendary Queen of Burlesque! Lee made an LP of
naughty songs in 1958, and Church recorded an LP of similar material in 1960. This CD combines
both! From her dazzling rise as a stripper in 1931 until her demise in 1970, Gypsy Rose Lee was
one of the most quoted and photographed women of her time. Her fame continues to this day, partly
because of the Broadway musical Gypsy. Enormously successful in 1959, it was filmed with Natalie
Wood and is frequently revived with increasing reverence.
Track Listing: SANDRA CHURCH: Let Me Entertain You • Wild Rose • How Come You Do Me
Like You Do • That’s What I Like • Ooh, That Kiss • Zip • You’ve Got To See Mama Ev’ry Night •
Top 20 hits in stereo. They are contained here, available on CD for the first time, as well as some
contemporary hits of the day. Included are her chart-toppers and million sellers “A Tree In The
Meadow” and “Slippin’ Around” plus “Now Is The Hour” and “Far Away Places,” both of which
reached #2 in the charts. The three bonus tracks at the end are private recordings, made by Whiting
with her regular pianist Walter Gross, never before issued.
• Mah Damba is a jeli muso; she belongs to the caste of the griots, the
professional musicians of the Mande world who are also genealogists,
chroniclers, and custodians of the epic tradition. She has been living in
France for many years, and regularly performs for European audiences.
• Mah carries on the family tradition, and for this recording she has gathered
three of her children: guimba Kouyaté on guitar, Sira Tounkara and
Woridio Tounkara on background vocals. All three have been immersed
in this musical universe since they were infants, and are regularly hired to
• Wang Li grew up in Shandong, china. After his university studies, he
turned down the career his parents had intended for him and went to Paris
on his own. This is where he found his calling in music, becoming a jaw
harp virtuoso as well as an inspired composer.
• One of the oldest musical instruments in the world, the jaw harp is to be found
in many cultures. Its ancient roots bear witness to its magical essence. The
chinese harp, called kouxian (formerly huang) has survived amongst most
chinese minorities since the 14 th century. It is commonly used to express love.
He is also a master of the gourd flute, another ancient chinese instrument.
• The compositions on this fascinating album are the outcome of a dream
he had involving his companion, Sang, and the aquatic world. “Dreaming
provides infinite space, it is like plunging into the abyss.”
• In 1976, the 20 th Century Steel Band released their debut Warm Heart, Cold
Steel. It proved to be a landmark album, and featured the track “Heaven & Hell
Is On Earth,” sampled on J-Lo’s huge hit “Jenny from the Block.”
• The band’s appearance on New Faces in 1974 (the equivalent of American
Idol) catapulted them to fame. They won a lucrative recording deal with the
now-defunct united Artists, and were invited onto Tv and radio programs,
including a session on the late John Peel’s radio show. Sadly, the band split
up shortly after.
• Now, after 30 years, original members Michael Oliviere and godfran Moore
have reformed the group with a new line-up and are re-releasing their seminal
album on Mr Bongo records. Warm Heart, Cold Steel is an upbeat, feel-good
album of 13 tracks recorded against a backdrop of seductive steel drum.
• The infectious, instantly recognizable hook of the heavily sampled track
“Heaven & Hell” has appeared in Black Eyed Peas’ “Say Goodbye,” Xzibit’s
“los Angeles Times,” LL Cool J’s “Todd Smith,” and Salt-n-Pepa’s “very
Necessary,” to name just a few.
• Although sampling 20CSB was widespread, it was also done without the
band’s knowledge or permission. composer Michael Oliviere successfully
sued for unpaid royalties, and received recognition for his contribution to
music with awards from BMI and AScAP.
Cravo & Canela harmonies are reminiscent of Sergio Mendes in the ’60s,
but with soulful piano and beautiful layered vocals on top.
• Tracks range from vintage noel Rosa to latter-day originals by special guest
Sivuca, all delivered with true Brazilian warmth.
