Editorial:
Hi all.
And now it starts… Another year. I personally am
looking forward to what 2019 will bring. A new
year, a new beginning. So many opportunities are
there, waiting to be taken and enjoyed. ‘Bring it
on” I say.
We have just had our 6th Birthday
Bash at Fonty’s Pool here in WA, and
the other states have now had their
first for the year also. Check out the
reports in this newsletter. We are
lucky over here in Australia, with the weather being
‘somewhat’ good, it was freezing in the UK, that
even our local reporters needed to move country.
The weather has had a serious effect to some
towns throughout our wonderful country, what
with floods in Queensland, NSW and Victoria, and
fires in Tasmania and WA. Also farmers are still
feeling the effects of the drought. Blazeaid is looking
for volunteers in just about every state for every
type of emergency, so if you can help out, jump
onto their website (www.blazeaid.com.au) for
more details.
I am a bit disappointed in that I haven’t had any
response back from those members that I sent out
our ‘Met the Members’ page, so for this month I
have cancelled that entry. I hope that next month it
will return, along with our Member Reports. I don’t
get a lot of feedback or even comments from our
members, so I will continue to bumble along and
hope that the newsletter is acceptable. Although I
CONTACT DETAILS
would really love to hear from you and be able to
put in your comments of
various things. So give it a
thought guys & girls, I’m
sure that everyone would
love to hear from you.
(Don’t forget that not all
our members are on Facebook
and don’t get a chance to be apart of the everyday
comments and interaction that some of us
enjoy.)
Pete & I are off on our annual pilgrimage from May
to Aug to Shark Bay again, so if your going past,
make the drive in and have a cuppa or a bite of
fresh fish. It’s so worth the trip.
In the meantime, we are off to see the ‘Field of
Light: Avenue of Honour in Albany. It pays homage
to the Anzacs with 16,000 shining spheres at
Mt Clarence marking the last sight of home for
41,000 troops who departed from Albany for the
Great War. Its showing until the 28h April 2019,
and the word on the street is “it’s FANTASTIC”.
Due to the amount of rally’s happening in February,
I have split the newsletter into two. The next part
will be forwarded in the middle of March to allow
for the coordinators to send through their reports.
That’s all for now. Keep the shiny side up.
Ken T Report -
National Coordinator
KT’s REPORT
by Ken Tacon
HI All,
Welcome to 2019.
I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and joyous New Year.
I would like to welcome all our new members and hope to see you at one of our
gatherings soon.
This year we have a great array of trips and camps for you all to enjoy. I would
like to thank all the state coordinators for the effort they and their helpers have
put in to arrange these. If you would like to go to a special place either speak to
a coordinator or if you wish to lead a trip by all means. All the rallies are on the
web page.
Don't forget the club’s 11 th Birthday Bash is on in March, at Valla Beach Caravan
Park, which is pet friendly. We have put it back a week from usual, so
those going to the Ulysses AGM, can travel back to come along.
As per last year, the club will supply salads for the meal on Saturday night. All
you need to bring is your meat or whatever (barbies supplied). If you haven't
booked, go to the web page and register, ring the park to book your site and tell
them you are with the Ulysses RV Group.
The park is bounded by river where you can fish, kayak, and paddle board.
Just a short walk across a bridge and you are on the beach where you can surf
or go for walks. There are lots of trips you can do either alone, or we can go as
a group, to places like Nambucca Heads, Pub with No Beer, Bowraville,
Macksville, and Coffs Harbor, just to name a few.
I hope to see you all soon, stay well and travel safe.
National Coordinator Ulysses RV Group
UMRV
International
Report.
UMRV International
Greetings and G’day from Ulysses Members RV Group International.
Hello Judi, and a Happy 2019 to you too.
Well, as you can imagine (or maybe you can’t?), winter made itself felt here and most
RVers went to ground. However, those who could scarpered across the Channel and
headed south to warmer climes, where from time to time they bump into one another.
So Harry and Carole and Max (who has his own doggy passport), travelling south
through Spain towards Almeria, stopped off to breakfast on cafes con leche, tostadas
and croissants at the Oasis cafe in Bolnuevo in the Mazarron area with Pete and Ilse
who are seeing out the colder months in their van there.
Mustn’t be too envious though: tomorrow Gray and I set off on that tedious journey
back to see how our old girl has fared in store since April last year. Heard today that
she is being serviced as I type. Then we’ll be making tracks for Mornington and look
forward to see some of you RVers there.
All the best from a zero degree centigrade GB.
WA Fonty’s Pool
Rallly Report
Ulysses Members RV Group – WA
Rally Report – Fonty’s Pool 8-10 th February
Well again, what a great weekend. The venue was perfect, set amongst
the fruit orchards in Manjimup, with a huge natural pond and parklands
surrounding the park area. The park was fully packed with our 17 vans,
people attending a wedding and just general travellers. A local couple
choose this setting for their wedding and most of our ladies couldn’t
resist going down to watch the Bride and Groom.
A fantastic attendance of 34 people, including a couple of members that have never attended a rally
before and new members that had never heard of us. Not to mention the diehards that attend all our
rally’s. It was great to catch up with everyone, new and old.
Most member took up the weekly special, with several members only staying for 4 nights. Everyone
was left to do what they wanted to do during the day, with happy hours, BBQ dinner on Friday night,
topped off by the Pot Luck Dinner on Saturday Night. The food at the pot luck dinner was superb (as
always) and a big thank you everyone for making it a great night.
Sunday saw the majority of us crashing the Pemberton Hotel for lunch, with
several members taking the opportunity of checking out the spectacular
scenery around this glorious southwest. The weather has been perfect all
weekend, with sunshine during the day but still cool enough at night to have
a comfortable sleep. We had a movie night (Peter Rabbit) on Sunday to top
off the weekend.
Our next rally is in the process of being finalised. At this stage it will happen in early
June, as a Goldfields Winter Special. Shane & Rob are organising this and I will forward
all the details through as soon as I can, along with placing it on the website.
This will be an exciting rally for those that have not seen, or wish to revisit, the Goldfields.
At this stage it’ll be a over few days and visiting different areas Details to coming
soon.
Members wishing to go to the Meningie AGM is SA on 14-21 st October, you are more than welcome
to Tag-A-Long with us on our “Bringing up the Rear” UMRV-WA tag-a-long. For itinerary details,
please contact me direct, via Judi Raven, and I’ll forward you a pdf copy. We
will be leaving on the 6 th October and arriving at Lake Albert Caravan Park on
14 th October.
We had such a great time again at Fonty’s Pool that we have booked again for
our 7 th Birthday Bash for 7-9 February, 2019. Again I have booked 10 sites,
just let them know your with the Ulysses RV Group. We have already booked
for the week, along with a few others. So come join our party, for a few days or a week. Plans have
already been made for a BBQ at Big Brook Dam at Channybearup, ‘Movies at the Mercers”, along
with a couple of others things. See you there.
We look forward to catching up with you on your travels, at our next rally or
the AGM in Meningie SA. Don’t forget if your travelling through to Denham
during May to August, pop in to say hi Pete & myself at the Denham Seaside
Caravan Park. (Bring your fishing rod).
Keep the shiny side up and travel safe
SA Clayton Bay
Report
CLAYTON BAY 16 th to 18 th November 2019
Leading up to the weekend at Clayton Bay, the forecasted unpredictability of the
weather meant we might get a really great weekend or a weather affected weekend.
As it turned out we had both. The early starters who got there on Thursday saw the
wind build up through the afternoon, but on the positive side the sun still shone. As the wind was coming
in diagonal to our sites, we were able to seek shelter on one side of the caravans.
After setting up our sites and having a look around the park we settled in behind a caravan for happy
hour. Just before the sun set across the river, producing some magnificent colours in the sky, we thought
it was time for dinner, although nobody had much enthusiasm to do anything. In the end the easy way
was taken. “Mr Aldi” 3 cheese pizzas with a variety of meats added to the topping went into the Webber.
When they were cooked, I’m not sure if the hunger pangs that had set in or the alcohol
was taking effect or they were just good pizzas, but everyone enjoyed them and
their hunger was satisfied.
Friday, after a still morning, we saw more wind build up in the afternoon and night.
However It didn’t stop people coming to Clayton Bay. By evening we had a good crew exceeding 20 people,
set up on the banks of the River Murray. It was good to see a few couples who are not regular
attendees coming along for this weekend. Hopefully they are encouraged to come along to more weekends
next year.
With the wind still hanging around on Saturday, most people decided to have a fairly relaxed day. Sitting
protected from the wind between Hoppy & Pats motorhome and Brett and Judys caravan, it was quite
pleasant for some of us to laze around and watch the yachts battling the breezes on the water. Others
went to neighbouring towns for lunch or just to look at the local sights and attractions.
That night the local café/restaurant had music organised for a few hours from 7pm, so
most of us booked a table for a meal and some entertainment. With the restaurant
deck protected from the wind, we were able to enjoy the great views across a reserve
to the River Murray, have a good meal and listen to 60s, 70s and 80s music.
Sunday was pack up day for some, while the rest could have more chill out time on the banks of the river.
Thank goodness the wind had died down a bit from the previous days. Again water activities entertained
us, but this time it was mainly skiers or kids on rubber donuts being towed behind speedboats or
jetskis. There were a few “Oohs, Aahs and Wows” as we saw the kids get dumped off the donuts in spectacular
fashion as they crossed the wake.
After a quiet night it was Monday and time for the rest of us to leave. Again it was great to have some
visitors over the weekend with MMM, Sue & Grant dropping in from time to time. With MMMs and Sues
shack just across the road from the CP, it was quite convenient for them. Most interestingly dressed visitor
was Graham who was still dressed in his clown suit after participating in the Christies Beach Pageant.
Carolyn wasn’t quite as adventurous as she arrived in her civvies. Well done Graham, I bet you got a few
looks along the way when you got out the car.
This was the last SA organised weekend for 2018 and next years program is nearly complete. The calendar
below has the dates set but we still need to finalise the destinations. The RV AGM is in Sth Aust next
year, come along and support that on
14 th to 20 th November 2019
At Lake Albert Caravan Park Meningie
3 ways with Pancakes
Food on a BUDGET
Turn heads (and taste buds) with a special take on this camping staple… pancakes perfect
for breakfast or a holiday treat.
Ricotta and buttermilk pancakes
(BASIC BATTER)
Makes approx 20
2 cups plain flour
3 tsps baking powder
½ cup castor sugar
2 eggs
1 cup soft ricotta
1½ cups buttermilk
70g butter, melted
Method:
Place the flour, baking powder and sugar in
a bowl. Whisk together.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the
eggs, ricotta, buttermilk and butter then
lightly mix
through the flour until the batter is
smooth. The mixture should be the consistency
of thick cream, adjust with a
splash of milk if required.
Leave the batter to sit at room temperature
for 20 minutes. This will give you a
lighter pancake.
Cook small amounts of the batter in a lightly
greased non-stick fry pan over medium
heat.
Twist #2
Tropical fruit and yoghurt pancakes
Make the ricotta and buttermilk pancakes
as per the recipe.
Serve with diced mango, sliced banana, vanilla
yoghurt and drizzle with passionfruit
pulp.
Garnish with mint leaves.
Twist #3
Chocolate pancakes with ganache and
marshmallows
Using the basic batter add 4 tbsp cocoa to
the dry ingredients. Proceed as in the directions
listed.
To serve,
Make a hot chocolate ganache: bring ½ cup
cream to the boil in a saucepan, remove
from the heat, add 150gm chocolate buttons
and allow to sit until melted.
Stir with a wooden spoon till smooth and
glossy.
Pour over a stack of chocolate pancakes
and allow the kids (big and small) to decorate
with
extra chocolate chips and mini marshmallows.
Allow to cook until bubbles appear on the
surface, then flip using a spatula.
Serve warm with your favourite toppings.
Twist #1
Spring onion pancakes, with bacon,
eggs and maple syrup
Using the basic batter add three finely
chopped spring onions. Season with salt and
pepper.
Proceed as in the directions listed.
Serve with crispy bacon and a soft fried
egg, drizzled with maple syrup.
Rick’s Last Words
The Last Word.
Howdy doody every body. I trust that everyone got through the Christmas and New Years
breaks, spending time with family, grandkids and for some, even great grandkids. I gather
from the activity on our Facebook page that there was plenty of socialising and happy hours
happening and that is great to see.
As I become more and more housebound lately, Ken has been stepping up and taking over a
lot of the day to day liaison and running of the club, and having someone as competent as
my co-coordinator to fully take over when my time comes certainly puts my mind at ease,
and should do likewise for all of you. Judi is certainly on top of the website, membership
database and the newsletter, so nothing for me to worry about in that regard.
Along with Gordon and Ken, I was quite disappointed when due to lack of bookings for the
tagalong to the Melon Festival at Chinchilla, it had to be cancelled to avoid the club being
out of pocket. More so than that, I doubt that you will see Sherol or I at any club rallies in
the future due to my health, so I was looking forward to having a good number of Ulyssian
RV members here in town so I would be able to join you for happy hours either in the showgrounds
or in our back yard. Never mind, Que Sera Sera.
Next week, my eldest brother and sister in law arrive in their motor home from Adelaide to
set up camp in our driveway. I am looking forwards to having their company for a couple of
weeks, and there are a few jobs that my brother can knock over for me. Last month Soren
and Sandy, and Daryl and Joy turned up at our place after setting up camp at the showgrounds,
and then got stuck into renovating our laundry and toilet. Old floor all pulled up,
new floorboards installed, then new vinyl sheets laid, new laundry tub installed and finally
the washing maching reinstalled. What a tremendous effort by these guys, something I
could no longer undertake, and our heartfelt thanks go out to them all.
There have been a lot of new members joining the RV Group recently, over 70 since July last
year, and quite a number of those have registered to come along to Valla Beach for the
birthday rally next month, which is terrific to see. Please make them welcome to the group
Until next time,
