Wednesday 20 February, 2019 THE WEEKLY TIMES 15 EASTWOOD COMMUNITY NEWS New Eastwood Car Park proposal lodged on Friday A Development Application for the proposed new car park in Rowe Street East Eastwood was lodged by Mayor Jerome Laxale and Clr Dr Peter Kim on Friday. The multi-storey shopper car park at 53 to 71 Rowe Street and will have at least 150 spaces. Construction will begin in 2020. Mayor Jerome Laxale and Dr Kim said “In a first for a City of Ryde owned facility it will feature charging stations for electric vehicles,” Dr Kim said. “This Council has delivered on its promise to increase public parking in Eastwood.” The Council is also considering car park time limits and other options to manage turnover of car spaces to support the retail area of Eastwood. Mayor Jerome Laxale said the new shopper car park was the biggest increase in public parking spaces in Eastwood in nearly 50 years. “The development application reflects the feedback from the community during consultation conducted by Council,” he said. “It ensures that the new shopper car park will cater for the needs of the community both currently and well into the future”. “This will be achieved without the destruction of Eastwood Oval from the state government’s proposed car park.” The plans developed are part of Council’s efforts to address the chronic parking shortages currently crippling Eastwood while also revitalising the town centre and local economy. In addition to the new Rowe Street East shopper car park, Council has also commenced consultation on concepts that propose to relocate the existing Glen Street car park on the western side of Eastwood to the Shaftsbury Road precinct at the edge of Eastwood town centre. After construction of the Shaftsbury car park, the Glen Street car park site would be transformed into a public plaza and community hub. Labor’s shadow police spokesman Guy Zangari and Labor’s candidate for Ryde, the city’s Mayor Jerome Laxale, were joined by various Eastwood business owners and community leaders for the announcement this week. The package will fund CCTV cameras in Eastwood and on both sides of the Eastwood Town Centre and Mayor Laxale described it as a “good investment” because feedback from residents suggested they didn’t feel safe in the streets of Eastwood and Ryde. “For years small businesses and local residents have been crying out for full CCTV coverage across Eastwood– but the Liberals haven’t been listening,” Mayor Laxale said. “Our community deserves to feel safe in their own streets, that’s why Labor will deliver the community safety assets needed to make this a reality”. Shadow police spokesman Guy Zangari blamed local Liberal politicians for “warped priorities” that had “left Eastwood feeling less safe”. “They’ve been more focused on selling public land off to developers and recklessly splurging $2.2 billion rebuilding Sydney stadiums,” he said. TWT readers would be forgiven for thinking their safety had already been reassured after federal government-funded CCTV cameras were installed in 2016 in Eastwood. Federal MP for Bennelong, John Alexander, reminded the community he’d lobbied for federal funding for CCTV cameras in Eastwood during the Bennelong by-election, with federal justice minister Michael Keenan also jetting into TWT Territory for a tick of approval. Market Republic operator Steven Chang said most Eastwood businesses had already installed their own CCTV cameras within their premises, but stressed the need for signage warning potential criminals of their existence, as an important visual deterrent. Ryde Clr Peter Kim told The Weekly Times break-ins in Eastwood’s western side and a separate spate of break-ins last October targeting Korean businesses underscored the need for CCTV cameras. “Members of the Korean Chamber of Commerce had a meeting with Ryde’s police superintendent in December, where it was recommended affected business owners install high quality CCTV cameras to identify offenders,” he said. The call for CCTV cameras in Eastwood came after a man was viciously attacked by two men and left with horrific injuries in 2013 while walking through Glen Reserve near Hillview Lane. The 58-year-old man required operations on his left eye and suffered from double vision, while metal plates also had to be inserted in the left side of his face to support his fractured eye socket. Funding was made available in late 2013 under the Coalition’s Safer Streets Communities Grants but it was not until early 2016 that the cameras were actually installed. The Weekly Times understands the delays were due to a protracted series of consultations by Ryde Council and also some initial baulking over significant strings attached to the funding which had been made available on an application-only basis. Mayor Laxale said: “Only a handful of cameras were installed with a federal government grant around the carpark. Since then we’ve had nothing.” EASTWOOD SKIN CANCER & COSMETIC CLINIC SKIN CANCER CLINIC (BULK BILLED) • Skin Cancer Check • Skin Cancer Diagnosis • Skin biopsy • Skin Cancer Surgery • Non Surgical Treatments • Laser Skin Cancer Therapy • Photodynamic therapy • Minor Operations for lumps & Bumps CoSmEtIC PRomotIoN • Laser mole removal ($65 per mole) • Anti Wrinkle injection (Approx $100 per area) Orchestra in the Park City of Ryde will host its first “Orchestra in the Park” event featuring Ryde Hunters Hill Symphony Orchestrawith Conductor, Ian Cox. The Concert Master is Rebecca Irwin, with Soloists Alison Robertson and George Yang.
