Park district retrieves feedback for possible dog park
Christine Adams
Freelance Reporter
The Glencoe Park District
held a community input
meeting on Tuesday,
Feb. 12, to discuss the feasibility
of creating a dog
park, and was met with
abundant support to proceed
with the project.
The main question of the
night asked the public to
weigh in on whether Glencoe
should have a dog park,
and if so, where it should
be located. Independent
consultant Barbara Heller
was brought in to facilitate
the conversation and share
some background on dog
park trends.
According to Heller, dog
parks have grown in the
U.S. by 40 percent since
2009 and are the fastest
growing amenity that park
districts provide.
A dog park in Glencoe
has been discussed on-andoff
since about 2000, according
to Lisa Sheppard,
executive director of the
Glencoe Park District. The
idea is continuing to gain
traction and has been part
of the park district’s strategic
plan for the past six
years.
A poster in the back of
the room asked “Do you
think Glencoe should have
a dog park?” and had space
for attendees to mark their
response of “yes” or “no”
with a sticker. By the end
of the night, more than 60
stickers approved of a park,
with one dissenting vote.
Rather than a traditional
question-and-response
format, the meeting was
composed of three stations
that attendees toured at
their own pace to anonymously
share reasons on
sticky notes in support of
a dog park, against a dog
park and suggest locations
where the park should — or
should not — be built.
Delta Schonhoft, of
Glencoe, came with her
daughter Abby to support
the project.
“It’s critical when you
have young dogs to get them
socialized,” Schonhoft said.
“It helps reduce aggressive
behavior around other dogs,
and is a great community
place for people.”
“Dogs are alone a lot and
get lonely, and they need
other dogs,” added Abby,
10.
Glencoe resident Bob
Stern is also in favor of a
dog park, but cautioned
about the risks and considerations
that need to be addressed
ahead of time, such
as non-sociable dogs.
“There’s going to be
dogs you don’t want in that
dog park, and you need to
figure out how to deal with
them,” Stern said.
At the “against a dog
park” station, attendees
shared their concerns,
such as the noise of barking
dogs, the safety of
residents around unleashed
pets, the irresponsibility of
some dog owners and the
dearth of suitable locations
for a dog park. No resident
against the dog park provided
a comment to The
Anchor.
The American Kennel
Club recommends that dog
parks be at least one acre,
Join us Tuesday
and at this point only park
district land is being considered
as the county is
unwilling to use forest preserve
land and the Village
is not involved with the
effort.
That acre would also
need to be in a place with
a suitable amount of parking,
removed enough from
neighbors to not create
a disturbance, separated
from children’s play areas
and contained within a
four-foot-high fence.
On a map where attendees
could suggest locations,
the most popular recommendations
were the land
north of the Takiff Center;
the open area near the
Breakwater Sculpture; and
somewhere within Watts
Park.
Information from the
meeting will be brought to
the Board of Park Commissioners,
who will listen to
feedback, discuss the feasibility
and potential cost, and
then set another meeting.
Sheppard cautioned the
park would not be created
overnight, and that there is
still much planning to be
done, but if this meeting is
any indication, the public
will be eagerly involved
Scouts put their creativity to the test in Pinewood Derby
Alexa Burnell, Freelance Reporter
It was off to the races for Glencoe’s
Cub Scouts Pack 28 Den 5
on Feb. 10, when they gathered
at West School for the annual
Pinewood Derby.
The Pinewood Derby allows
the scouts to present their homemade,
creatively designed miniature
cars in hopes of having their
automobile be named the fastest
car on the track.
It is a Scouting tradition that
began in 1953 in Manhattan
Beach, Calif., where Cubmaster
Don Murphy created the event
for his son, who was too young
to participate in the popular Soapbox
Derby. Considering his audience
were mainly pint-sized people,
he decided the automobiles
must be too, making it the rule
that cars must be of certain, small
dimensions and not weigh more
than five ounces. The Pinewood
Derby struck a chord in the hearts
of many, maintaining the rules
and its popularity since that time.
For Cubmaster John Garabedian,
the event is a sentimental one,
reminding him of memorable moments
from his own childhood.
“I have wonderful memories of
the Pinewood Derby, participating
in the event as a child with
my father,” Garabedian said.
“Now, after having just taking on
the role of Cubmaster for Pack 28
within the last month, I’m sharing
this experience with my 9-yearold
son, JB. It’s an honor to carry
on this father and son tradition,
while leading our troop.”
As Garabedian helped answer
any last-minute questions, fellow
scout leaders prepared the track,
impressively designed to record
the speed of each car down to
the ten thousandth of a second.
Meanwhile, young boys placed
their cars near the track, excited
to show off their creative designs
inspired by Pac-Man, Legos,
sports teams and variety of games
and toys, too.
Six-year-old Amar Thakrar
modeled his car after his favorite
sports team, the Bears. His car,
complete with a football field,
miniature players and goal posts,
became a shared project between
he and his mother, Shameen.
“Amar really loves the Bears,
coming up with this idea all on his
own,” Shameen said. “From there,
we were given specific constraints,
like keeping the car under the
5-ounce maximum. Then, Amar
helped with sanding, painting and
other design details; we even went
to a craft store recently which is
where we found the miniature
figurines. Amar spotted them and
knew immediately that he wanted
them to be part of his creation.”
For Amy Olshansky, watching
her twin second-grade boys,
Maxwell and Jackson, plan, create
and design their cars alongside
their father was particularly
heartwarming.
“The boys really loved working
with their dad, using different
tools to create their own unique
cars. I hope that what they learn
from this experience is the joy of
completing a project from start
to finish and how good it feels
to make something from hand,”
Olshansky said.
As the day of racing came to a
close, the results poured in. The
top 10 scouts that had the fastest
cars were Max Lieberman,
Maxwell Olshansky, Henry Stallsmith,
Jack Merlo, Jackson Olshansky,
Armani Shaikh, Louis
Delcourt, Ben Holtzman, Cameron
Jeppe and Trevor Hixon.
Three other awards were given,
including the best craftsmanship
to Wyatt Leonard, most creative
to Davy Fischvogt and Cubs
choice award to Amar Thakrar.
Cubmaster John Garabedian
releases the cars Feb. 10
during the Pinewood Derby at
West School in Glencoe. Mark
Bloomberg’s ‘Richest Places’ list
Staff Report
THE WILMETTE BEACON
Village of Wilmette
looking into gun safety
measures
Three days prior to the
one-year anniversary of
the school shooting in
Parkland, Fla., last Feb.
14, Wilmette’s public safety
committee met on Feb.
11 to discuss gun safety.
At the Wilmette Village
Board’s Feb. 12 meeting,
Trustee Joel Kurzman,
who is the chairman of
the public safety committee,
gave a report on the
committee’s meeting that
occurred the night before.
Kurzman said that there
are two topics that the
committee will be pursuing
follow up on and discuss
further at future meetings.
One of them is to
promote best practices on
safe gun storage.
“We learned that our police
department and other
parts of Village government
do a lot already to
promote safety and I think
we’re going to brainstorm
ways that we can get that
message out even further,”
he said.
The Village of Glencoe
is the 10th wealthiest town
in America.
That’s according to
Bloomberg, which published
a report titled
“These Are the Wealthiest
Towns in the U.S.” on Feb.
13.
Bloomberg evaluated
inflation-adjusted household
data for all U.S.
places, as defined by the
Census, with a minimum
of 2,000 households and
ranked them based on average
household income.
Nearly 6,250 met the criteria,
the article says.
Average household income
excluded households
without any type of income,
it adds.
Glencoe’s average income
comes in at $339,883
per year, according to
Bloomberg.
The village “climbed
five spots to land in the top
10 for the first time,” the
article adds.
Two other North Shore
communities were included
in the top 50 index, as
Another topic that the
committee will be pursuing
follow up on deals with an
ordinance the Northbrook
Village Board passed on
May 22, 2018 that prohibits
the concealed carry of
firearms at establishments
where alcohol is sold for
on-premises consumption.
“A second area of interest
that we will look at and
do due diligence on is how
Northbrook is handling its
concealed carry in its public
establishments serving
liquor,” Kurzman said.
Village President Bielinski
is also interested in the
topic of concealed carry in
liquor establishments.
“I’m very interested to
hear how the public safety
committee consulting with
staff comes back on the
concealed carry in liquor
establishments,” he said.
The board also approved
a contract for engineering
services for the Glenview
Road bridge north sidewalk
replacement project
well. Those towns include
Winnetka at No. 13 with
$331,231 per year and
Lake Forest at No. 34 with
$268,922 per year.
Nearby Highland Park
was also mentioned in
Bloomberg article, as it
rounded out the top 100
towns on the list with a
$209,000 average income.
The top wealthiest town
in Atherton, Calif., whose
household income averaged
$450,696 in 2017, topped
the Bloomberg Richest
Places annual index for the
third year in a row.
Ticket agent to be
eliminated from Metra
station at Elm Street
Winnetka’s Metra station
will no longer be
staffed by a ticket agent
since commuters increasingly
are purchasing tickets
through the Ventra app,
the rail agency has announced.
Effective Friday, Feb.
22, customers will either
have to purchase a oneway
ticket from the conductor
or buy a ticket from
the Ventra app, according
to statement posted on the
Metra Web site. Approximately
43 percent of all
tickets are now purchased
through the app, which is
available on Google Play
or the App Store.
The station, which
serves roughly 740 customers
per weekday for the
Union Pacific North Line,
sold an average of 610
tickets per month in 2018,
and 432 in December, according
to the website
statement. Metra said that
New Trier alumni remembered
for always ‘caring about others’
Blood drive set for
Saturday, Feb. 23
Hilary Anderson
Freelance Reporter
Many North Shore residents
remember Kevin
Joseph Smith Burke.
He was a member of the
New Trier High School
graduating Class of 2012,
once a student at Wilmette’s
St. Joseph’s preschool
and later a pupil
at St. Francis Xavier’s
School there.
Sadly, Burke died much
too young at age 23. His
heart just stopped beating
July 10, 2017. No one
knows why.
An upcoming event will
celebrate his life, one in
which everyone can participate.
It is a blood drive
being held from 8 a.m.-2
p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, in
Burke’s memory at St. Joseph
School lunchroom,
1747 Lake Ave., Wilmette.
Both St. Francis Xavier
and St. Joseph Churches
are sponsoring the event.
“It will honor his legacy
of caring about others —
one that continues giving
and helping as he did in his
short life,” said his mother,
Kathryn Burke.
It will be the second annual
Kevin Smith Memorial
Blood Drive. Last year,
170 people showed up and
donated 140 pints of blood.
“We are inviting the
North Shore community to
honor one of its own, Kevin
Joseph Smith Burke,
by signing up and giving
blood,” said Jeff Later,
coordinator of the blood
drive, friend of Burke’s
family and regular blood
donor for nearly 25 years.
Kevin Joseph Smith Burke is shown during his gapyear
trip to South Africa. Photo submitted
“We all know someone
in need battling cancer or
other illness that needs
transfusions of blood. Every
pint potentially saves
three lives.”
Burke was an athletic
young man who was a
member of New Trier’s
football, swimming and
rowing teams.
“Kevin ran a half-marathon
when he when he
still was in junior high,”
Kathryn Burke said. “He
ran triathlons with me and
climbed the AON Building’s
steps for charity. He
did it two years in a row.
First time, he came in 12th
place out of 2,000 people.
The second year he placed
sixth among more than
2,500 entrants.”
It was not just his athleticism
that made Burke
stand out among others.
“Kevin cared about his
friends and others who just
wanted someone to listen
to them,” Kathryn Burke
said. “Kevin sat with a
friend who had cancer and
was going through chemo
treatments.”
Burke worked at the
Wilmette Starbucks on
Green Bay Road. It often
was a place where people
would come, sit and talk.
Burke would listen.
“One person was a
classmate of Kevin’s
whose family was having
problems and had to move
away,” Kathryn Burke
said. “The classmate said
Kevin was a good listener
who kept things
confidential.”
Burke’s father, also
named Kevin, related how
his son befriended a man
who moved to this area
from Dubai and had problems
being understood
while speaking English.
“The man later said he
felt comfortable talking
with Kevin and was grateful
for the friendship,”
Kevin Burke said.
Burke lived his short life
to the fullest according to
those who knew him. He
took a gap year after his
high school graduation and
went to South Africa.
“He wanted to meet
people and surf on a beach
there,” Kathryn Burke
said. “He came back sooner
than expected but he
made it to South Africa.
We want this blood drive
to be Kevin’s vicarious
way of still meeting people
and helping them.”
“Giving blood is on the
same level as giving someone
the gift of life through
an organ donation,” Later
said. “But it is simpler and
easier than giving a kidney
or part of your liver to a
person in need. We invite
everyone to come and donate
blood. There will be
freshly baked goods and
other food to eat. Giving
blood on Feb. 23 in honor
of Kevin Joseph Smith
Burke will be a community
get-together honoring
his legacy of caring about
and helping others.”
blood drive, contact St. Joseph
School.

Morning fire breaks out
in apartment complex
Megan Bernard, Editor
Glencoe Public Safety is
investigating the cause of
a residential fire that broke
out Friday, Feb. 15, at Hazel
Apartments in the 300
block of Hazel Avenue.
Public Safety responded
to the active fire in a thirdfloor
unit at 11:30 a.m. between
Greenwood and Vernon
avenues, according to
Deputy Chief Rich Weiner.
“The fire has been extinguished
but inspections
continue,” a tweet from
the Village of Glencoe
reads. “Please avoid the
area unless necessary.”
The flames were confined
to a dining room
From feb. 15
area, Weiner told The
Anchor.
“There were some
clothes and furniture in
there,” he added in regards
to what damage the fire
caused. “Then there was
damage caused by the fire
department itself.”
The unit’s owner was
not present at the time;
however, two dogs were
found in the apartment
and were taken to the animal
hospital for possible
smoke inhalation, Weiner
said. There were no other
reported injuries.
American Craft Exposition donates $563K to area hospital
Staff Report
On Feb. 12, the Auxiliary
of NorthShore University
HealthSystem
presented a check totaling
$563,554 to Dr. Frederick
Miller and Dr. Mark
Drexler. The funds — all
raised during the 2018
American Craft Exposition
— will benefit mental
health initiatives at
NorthShore University
HealthSystem.
ACE 2018 co-chairs
Leslie Sevcik and Kathy
Leighton, of Northbrook,
presented the funds raised
to Miller, NorthShore’s
chairman of psychiatry,
and Drexler, the medical
director of Glenbrook
Center.
Hospital, Evanston Hospital
and Skokie Hospital.
The donation was a
highlight of the 2019 ACE
Kickoff event held at the
Chicago Botanic Garden
in Glencoe, where a small
group gathered to hear
more about the doctors’
initiatives and the upcoming
ACE 2019 show.
“The number of North-
Shore area hospital patients
with depression
has skyrocketed in recent
years, yet the numbers
don’t surprise me,” Drexler
said at the Feb. 12
event. “We’re grateful to
receive this support so we
can serve more patients
through our Psychiatric
Urgent Care Program.”
“The goal of the Psychiatric
Urgent Care Program
is to efficiently manage
patient care and support
lower wait times for patients
with a mental health
need,” Miller said during
his presentation. “The
only acceptable number
for suicide is zero, and
we’re aiming for that with
the implementation of this
program.”
“In 2018, ACE surpassed
its own fundraising
goal,” said Northfield’s
Buggie O’Grady,
who will serve as the 2019
ACE co-chair. “We are
honored to continue the
fundraising momentum in
2019”.
O’Grady’s co-chair and
former chief nursing officer
at NorthShore, Nancy
Semerdjian, of Wilmette,
added that ACE 2019
funds will “further accelerate
NorthShore’s ability
to meet this tremendous
community need for patients
seeking access to
urgent and coordinated
care.”
ACE attracts more
than 8,000 attendees
from across the Midwest
and beyond and features
more than 140 fine craft
exhibitors.
This year is the fifth
year that ACE will take
place at the Chicago Botanic
Garden. It will run
from Sept. 20-22, with
a special Preview Party
Benefit slated for Sept. 19.

Kelly Anderson
Contributing Columnist
It’s challenging to shop
local. There, I said it.
We live in an era of
quick convenience. We
can order things straight
from an App or smartphone.
With just a few
quick taps, I can track a
pizza delivery, queue up a
latte order, tour local real
estate, read reviews for a
wool sweater and place a
library book on hold.
For obvious reasons, the
era of quick convenience is
very enjoyable. But there
is one teeny part of this
that is irksome — the effect
that this has on small,
local businesses.
I’m haunted by a story
of a legendary Glencoe
book store that closed its
doors in 2016. It was a
glorious shop that not only
offered books but it had a
secret theater in the back.
I was lucky enough to see
a few shows there and I’ll
never forget how wondrous
the concept was or
how intimate the performances
felt.
When the store closed,
one of the reasons cited
was competition from
online book retailers —
that patrons would walk in,
compare online pricing and
grow frustrated when the
vendor couldn’t match the
price of a book.
Here’s what I know for
sure: local businesses are
pillars of the community.
Columnist Kelly Anderson’s Valentine’s Day floral
arrangement purchased locally from The Flower Shop
in Glencoe. Photo Submitted
They give us picturesque
storefronts to frame our
streets. They painstakingly
gift-wrap our purchases.
They go out of their way
to order what is needed
and deliver it to you in a
satisfactory manner. They
ask to know our names
and chat with us about our
children, families or pets.
Most of all, they want to
see Glencoe prosper.
During that recent
holiday that celebrates all
things love, I took a unique
approach. I grabbed a
flower vase from my cabinet
and asked my husband
to specifically visit The
Flower Shop on Vernon
Avenue. I figured if he was
going to give me flowers
for the holiday, it would
mean much more to me
if the item had ties to the
community. So that’s just
what he did.
For days, I stared at
the masterpiece of florals
that were assembled by
The Flower Shop: roses,
hydrangeas, tulips in soft
shades of creamy pink and
lavender. I thought about
how easy it would have
been for my husband to
go a different direction:
tap his phone and place an
order. I thought about the
extra effort involved — the
suggestion made, the vase
grabbed, the act of walking
into the store, etc.
I’ll confess: the extra
effort is worth it. Supporting
local businesses
sometimes means paying a
little bit more, showing up
in person or getting off of
our Apps and smartphones.
But that effort is always,
always appreciated. Storeowners
see it, residents
see it and our community
reflects it. Quick convenience
is pretty great, but
shopping small allows
everyone local to bloom.

Orchid Show provides tropical escape with 10K blooms
Megan Bernard, Editor
For those wishing to be
whisked away to a tropical
paradise midwinter, you
don’t have to worry about
the travel.
Chicago Botanic Garden
opened its annual Orchid
Show on Feb. 9 at 1000
Lake Cook Road, Glencoe.
Each year, the show
takes on a new theme; this
year’s being Orchid Show:
In The Tropics.
The show — running
through March 24 — is
planned and designed for
“well over a year,” said
Jodi Zombolo, the garden’s
director of visitor
events and programs.
“It takes about three to
four weeks of setting up
but [horticulturist Ryan
Barker] is the mastermind
who starts planning it at
least a year in advance,”
Zombolo said. “It’s incredible
to see it from the
sketches to what it is now
at the opening.”
This year’s show boasts
nearly 10,000 orchids in
bloom from around the
world, including Hawaii,
Florida and California, and
as far away as the Netherlands
and Thailand.
“The smells, plus the
colors, just make you feel
so warm when you come
in,” Zombolo said about
the thousands of flowers.
The setup, however,
faced some challenges
with the below-zero temperatures
and snowfall in
January.
“The horticulture staff
sets up this exhibit, but
they were called outside
to clean paths. Plus, only
essential employees were
called into work during the
polar vortex, so we were
really behind,” she added.
With overtime and
weekend hours, Zombolo
said the 40-person staff put
in extra labor to complete
the show for its early February
opening.
At the Orchid Show,
visitors are greeted by
floating palm islands in
Nichols Hall, leading into
the beginning of the show,
which is a rainforest-like
room complete with two
ceiling waterfalls. With
the relaxing sounds of water,
guests are encouraged
to learn about life in the
rainforest and how orchids
survive the tropics on the
wall displays and visuals.
In the first greenhouse,
there are three handmade
Tahitian arbors made
from reclaimed wood and
draped with flowers and
vines. As guests walk under
the arbors on a winding
path, there is lava rock
and beds of bright and colorful
orchids on the sides.
The second greenhouse
brings the orchids to eye
level with propped up
displays — a feature that
Zombolo said she loves.
“You get this cabana
feeling in the second
greenhouse because you
can see the orchids and
you have all this nice cloth
and sand surrounding
you,” she added.
Without giving too much
detail away, the second
house also presents hanging
flower structures and a
bed of coconut sprouts not
to be missed.
Rounding out the show,
there are interactive educational
displays and a painted
wall for guests to take
a selfie in butterfly wings.
Like last year, the show
will also have special
events, including Orchid
After Hours and Morning
Music with Orchids.
The after hours event each
Thursday night through
the show offers tropics-inspired
drinks and light fare
for purchase. Music with
Orchids runs for free every
Tuesday and Thursday
morning from 10-11 a.m.
Ravinia Brewing Co. brings homemade feel to Highland Park
Michael Wojtychiw
Sports Editor
The Ravinia District of
Highland Park is a bustling
part of the town. With
shops, restaurants and entertainment
options galore,
there’s a lot to do in town.
But the one thing that was
missing?
A brewpub.
Enter Ravinia Brewing
Co., a brewpub that opened
up Oct. 13 in the space that
used to occupy Smashing
Pumpkins frontman Billy
Corgan’s Madame Zuzu’s
Tea House.
“We’re probably over
three years in the making,”
Kris Walker, the brewpub’s
founder, said. “Beer sales
for 18 months, and for the
past six months, we’ve had
this place going.
“We’ve landed well,
and we’re just happy to
be here. The community’s
been great to come out and
support us and continues
to do so. We felt like this
was a community well deserving
of a place like this,
with a lot of young families
around and moving in, so
we said, ‘Hey, let’s make a
go of this.’”
Ravinia Brewing Co. offers
seven different homebrewed
beers, including a
saison, pilsner, India pale
ale, porter, lager, Belgianstyle
white ale and witbier.
The beers can be bought
on premises either individually,
via a six-pack or
at many of the local stores
that sell alcohol, such as
Binny’s and Mariano’s.
Something that has always
been important to
Walker and Paul Bumbaco,
the general manager, is giving
back to the community
and being charitable. Every
Monday, the brewpub has a
Give Back Monday special
and patrons can put their
names on a chalkboard
with the name(s) of people
they want to pay it forward
to and what they’re paying
forward. Items varied from
tacos to multiple beers.
“I think it’s very, very
important to give back to
the community,” Bumbaco
said. “Honestly, we
couldn’t really ask for anything
more, to be a part of
the community, jump right
in. As soon as we opened,
we started the Give Back
Mondays program, so to
see the other businesses
being involved in that, too,
and reaching out to other
charities, it’s great to see.”
When the editors from
22nd Century Media
stopped by the brewpub,
they were able to try some
of the menu favorites, especially
the tacos, on Taco
Tuesday.
We started out with the
brewpub’s chips, salsa and
guacamole. The chips are
made from scratch on the
restaurant’s premises and
can be purchased for $6.
Chips and salsa only are $5.
Bumbaco and Walker
next brought out four different
kinds of tacos: veggie,
pork carnitas, chicken
three) with a choice of filling including chicken tinga,
beef barbacoa, pork carnitas, veggie and a rotating
daily special. Erin Yarnall/22nd Century Media
tinga and beef barbacoa. An
order of three tacos costs
$10, while individual tacos
cost $3.50 and special tacos
cost $4. Taco Tuesdays see
tacos go for $2.
The tacos come with
Cotija cheese, lettuce, pico
de gallo and is glazed with
sour cream on top of the
group of three.
What Ravinia Brewing
does well with the food is
equal distribution of all the
ingredients. None of the
ingredients overpowers the
others, making it the perfect
distribution.
Do you have any
superstitions before,
during or after a
game?
I always have to make
the last save in warm ups
and in off ice warm ups
I always have to juggle a
soccer ball.
What’s one thing
people don’t know
about you?
My two front teeth are
basically fake. I flipped
over my bike handles in
fifth grade.
What’s one item on
your bucket list?
To travel the world with
my friends.
If you could travel
anywhere, where
would you go and
why?
I would love to go to
Bora Bora because it
seems amazing there.
What’s the best part
about being a New
Trier athlete?
Being able to see my
teammates in school.
It’s fun to play on a team
where you also see everyone
in school.
What’s the best advice
you’ve gotten and
who’s it from?
The best advice I have
received is if you fall off
the horse, get back on.
Tom Gullen told me this
when I was back playing
Winnetka and it has stuck
with me.
If you could play
another sport, what
would it be and why?
22nd Century Media File Photo
I would love to play
boys lacrosse, I think it is
the coolest sport to watch
and some of the goals they
score are incredible.
What’s been your
favorite moment at
New Trier?
Probably winning state
at the United Center.
If you could have a
superpower, what
would it be and why?
I would love to read
peoples minds because
I would like to see how
everybody thinks differently.
Loyola, New Trier boys
basketball learn their
postseason fate
The IHSA announced its
state playoffs seeds Thursday,
Feb. 14, afternoon. Both
Loyola and New Trier are part
of the Niles North Sectional,
with the Trevians earning the
second seed and the Ramblers
earning the sixth seed.
With their seeds, the two
teams were also given regional
assignments and opponents.
New Trier will head to the
Glenbrook North regional,
where it will face either
Maine East or Lake View
on Feb. 26. A win in the regional
semifinal will pair the
Trevians against Glenbrook
North or Schaumburg for the
regional title on March 1.
Loyola, on the other hand,
will travel to Rolling Meadows
to take part in its regional.
The Ramblers’ first
opponent would be the host
appearance in the individual
finals. After qualifying in the
vault and beam as a freshman
last season, Graham qualified
on vault this year after scoring
a 9.65 in the prelims. Her 9.55
score in the finals placed her
in a four-person tie for fourth
place.
“Because I knew it was
my last time performing this
season, I knew to go out and
do my best,” Graham said. “I
don’t have to prove anything,
I just have to go out and do my
vault.
“My vault was ok, it wasn’t
as good as yesterday but I still
landed it.”
Graham says that participating
in the state finals last season
was a help this year.
“I was mentally prepared
for this weekend because I
worked my butt off this season,
especially on vault,” Graham
said. “I have better rotations
this year.”
Local athletes make college
commitments
Just because Signing Day
has passed, doesn’t mean that
student-athletes can’t continue
to make their collegiate
decisions. Here are some of
the latest college commitments
found via social media:
• Artie Collins, Loyola
football - John’s Hopkins
University
• Patrick Daniels, Loyola
football - University of St.
Thomas
• Chuck Sweat, New Trier
boys basketball - Swarthmore
College
• Andrew Kirkpatrick, New
Trier boys basketball ‘18 -
Babson College
For GBS coach Steve Gale,
seeing three members of the
CSL South in the 2-4 positions
in the team standings is something
he didn’t find shocking.
“We’re a very close-knit
group, a lot of the girls work
in the offseason together and
share the same experiences,”
Gale said. “To have three of
the top four teams in the state
from the same division of the
conference is just incredible.
It’s a real tribute to the girls in
the area.
For the first time in a number
of years, Lake Forest qualified
multiple gymnasts for the
state finals, including Kristin
Fisch, who was one of two atlarge
qualifiers to make it to
state in all four apparatuses.
“Coming in, I was happy
to be here because we hadn’t
been here for a while,” Lake
Forest coach Megan Miles
said. “To make it to the state
finals and to make it to this
day, having been here as a
coach, you know the expectations,
the pressure that the day
can bring anything.
Schretter earns national
honor
Katie Schretter, a Wilmette
resident and New Trier graduate
earned a Collegiate Rowing
Coaches Association National
Scholar Athlete award
after the 2017-18 school year.
The current junior at Cornell
University was a first-time
honoree and is studying computer
engineering.
To be named a CRCA National
Scholar Athlete, a student-athlete
must hold a minimum
cumulative grade-point
average of 3.5 and race in at
least 75 percent of her institutions
NCAA eligible boats.
Sports briefs are compiled by
Sports Editor Michael Wojtychiw.
“The fact that Kristin was
able to qualify on all events,
that was exciting. It was a
huge accomplishment on itself.”
Fisch also qualified for the
state meet last season, but suffered
a bad foot injury during
her floor routine preliminary
that prevented her from moving
on. That experience helped
motivate her coming into her
sophomore year.
“Last year I had a rough
state run because I broke my
foot there,” Fisch said. “This
year. it was an improvement
from last year. I had a rough
meet today but it was a new
experience and I’m excited to
go back next year.
“I was a little nervous. I
knew getting back here was
my goal this year and practiced
hard, so that’s an accomplishment
and I’m hoping to improve
next year. Now I know
what it’s like to be here.”
Fisch qualified for the individual
finals in both vault and
beam, but failed to earn a spot
on the podium.

Girls basketball
Loyola three-peats as regional champ
Michael Wojtychiw
Sports Editor
The last time Loyola
Academy hosted a girls
basketball regional, the
Ramblers fell in the title
game to Glenbrook South.
Led by seniors Celia Satter
and Julia Martinez, the
Ramblers made sure a repeat
of 2016 did not happen,
as they defeated conference
foe Trinity 58-35
Thursday, Feb. 14, in Wilmette.
“My freshman year, our
season ended in the regional
championship against
GBS,” Julia Martinez said.
“I remember I was so devastated,
it was my first year,
I was really upset. So to
have the same opportunity
senior year and be able to
close it out just means so
much. It’s so exciting.”
The regional title is the
third in a row for a Loyola
squad that came in seeded
second in the Evanston
Sectional. The win also
marked the second time
in the past three years that
Loyola had beaten Trinity
for a regional title.
After the Blazers got
out to a 6-3 lead early in
the first quarter, it was all
Ramblers (24-7), as the
hosts closed on a 16-0
run to end the period. The
Ramblers were hot from
the outside, knocking down
five 3-pointers, led by three
from Celia Satter.
“I thought our ball movement
was so good and we
were getting such clean
looks,“ Loyola coach Jeremy
Schoenecker said. “As
I told the girls before, the
best thing that happened
was probably playing Montini
at the end of the year
because it made us really,
really work so hard on our
zone offense because we
Loyola’s girls basketball team poses with its regional
championship trophy Thursday, Feb. 14, in Wilmette.
Michael Wojtychiw/22nd Century Media
didn’t see it too much.”
While the Ramblers offense
was starting to get
hot, the defense was shutting
down the blazers offense.
Trinity didn’t score
for nearly eight minutes between
the first and second
quarters and didn’t make a
basket for nearly nine.
After starting the game
on such a hot stretch,
Loyola’s offense hit a
rough spot, connecting on
6-of-15 shots, while also
turning the ball over on numerous
occasions. Even so,
the Ramblers still went into
the half with a 30-15 lead
at the half.
“Our coaches really prepare
us with our opponents’
strengths and weaknesses,”
Martinez said. “So before
the game, they give us a
scouting report on each
player, so we know when
we’re on the court, how to
guard each player. It’s taking
those reports and putting
them into the game.
Our coaches prepare us for
that really well.”
The second half, however,
didn’t start off as the
ramblers may have hoped,
as the Blazers scored two
baskets right off the bat,
forcing Schoenecker to call
a timeout.
“We talked about it before
but a 15 point lead up
to 20, might knock them
out,” Schoenecker said.
“They got two really easy
shots back in transition
and then Celia hits a big
3 to give us some more
breathing room. If they cut
it down to seven or nine,
it might be a different ball
game.”
A 3-pointer by Satter
quickly ended the run,
however.
“I did not come out very
well and he said we have
to take ownership,” Satter
said. “I feel like as a team,
we came back, regrouped
as a team and came back
even stronger.”
For the Ramblers, to win
the regional title on their
home court is something
special and something that
they’ll all remember, Schonecker
said.
“The last two years
we’ve won the regional,
we haven’t been able to cut
down the net, we cut them
down the next day when we
got back, so it was nice to
be able to do this,” he said.
Satter led the way for
Loyola with 14 points,
while Addison Ebeling had
11 and Summer Parker-
Hall eight.
New Trier earns best finish in 27 years
Michael Wojtychiw
Sports Editor
There’s a banner that
hangs in New Trier’s gym
honoring the school’s 1992
girls gymnastics team after
its runner-up finish at the
state meet. For as successful
as the New Trier program
has been that finish
is the highest the Trevians
have seen. In fact, New
Trier has only won a trophy
twice (1992, 1993).
That number became
three on Saturday, Feb. 16,
after the Trevians took second
place at the 2019 state
meet at Palatine by scoring
a 147.525, placing behind
Glenbard West (149.025),
but ahead of Central Suburban
League South rivals
Maine South (147.25) and
Glenbrook South (147.15).
“Knowing we’d been up
there with the top teams
this season, we felt like if
we hit we could be on the
podium,” said New Trier
coach Jennifer Pistorius,
who has been the team’s
head coach for the past 23
seasons and was an assistant
coach on those 1992
and 1993 teams.. “But it
couldn’t have been a better
TURN YOUR
EXTRAORDINARY
EXPERIENCES.
WE INSTALL GRAB BARS!
way to end the year.”
For some of the gymnasts,
the program’s history
is something they were
well aware of, especially
after missing out on a podium
finish after finishing
in fourth place last season.
“It feels awesome,”
Maeve Murdock said about
finishing second. “We
knew we could do it. Each
girl that competes is very
talented and I’m glad we
could come together and
make it happen.”
Day two of the state meet
consisted of the individual
state finals in all apparatuses
- floor, vault, uneven
bars and balance beam.
The top 10-11 finishes in
the preliminaries on Friday,
Feb. 15, moved on to Saturday’s
finals.
New Trier qualified three
gymnasts — Darcy Barkal,
Maeve Murdock and Avery
Faulkner — for the individual
finals in four events.
Barkal made the vault and
bars finals, while Murdock
made the finals of the beam
and Faulkner the floor finals.
Last year, in her first
year of competing for New
Trier, Barkal made the individual
finals in vault, but
had to withdraw the day
of after suffering an ankle
injury in the preliminary
round. This year, despite
dealing with a knee injury,
the senior qualified for both
the vault and bars finals, the
latter of which came as a bit
of a surprise.
“I’m just really proud of
our team with all the hard
work we’ve put in,” Barkal
said. “It was really fun
competing and all the energy
today.
“I was not expecting to
be on bars, so I was really
proud of myself for doing
that. I was really hoping to
make it back to vault, especially
after last year.”
Barkal would end up finishing
eighth in vault with
a 9.5, just short of a 9.55
which would have put her
on the podium, and eighth
on bars with a 9.325.
“I fell on beam and floor
in skills I don’t usually
fall on, so I was really upset
about that, but then we
went on vault and bars and
was able to turn it around,”
Barkal said.
Murdock qualified for
the beam final for the third
consecutive season, but fell
short of placing.
New Trier’s third finalist,
Faulkner, like Murdock,
is another three-year
varsity performer. Making
the finals was special for
Faulkner, who had missed
a majority of the season
due to a broken shin, forcing
her to really only be
able to do bars for eight
weeks. The injury started
to flare up around the Glenbard
West invite on Dec. 1.
She slowly worked her way
back, coming back fully in
time for the Fremd invite
on Jan. 12.
“I tried to come back as
fast as I could, knowing that
I only had a couple more
weeks to go in the season,”
Faulkner said. “My first invite
doing everything was
the Fremd invite, my first
bar routine where I wasn’t
actually hurt was probably
the Evanston invite.
“It was still fun to see
my team doing well without
me, I was proud of
them and knew that even if
I didn’t come back as fast
I’d like, I still trust they’ll
do well. It was rough being
out, but my team helped
so much, they were cheering
for me, they’d go and
office. They’re the reason I
got back so fast.”
GBS came into this
year’s state meet as thirdplace
finishers the past
two years and was looking
to improve its final team
standing. While the Titans
wouldn’t earn a spot on
the podium this year, they
did see two of their gymnasts
— Sheena Graham
and Jenna Hartley — make
the individual finals. Hartley
would participate in
the vault, beam and floor,
while Graham would participate
in the vault finals.
Hartley finished with
quite the day, medaling in
all three events, with a high
finish of third on the vault,
as well as placing fourth
overall in the all-around.
“I’ve worked hard all
season, worked really hard
on my sticks and I think
it all came together at the
end,” Hartley said. “It feels
really special to be able to
do that.”
Harrtley’s fourth-place
finish matched her podium
spot at the 2017 state finals,
while her third-place finish
on vault and fourth-place
spot on beam were careerbests
at the state meet.
She’s seen herself get
better each and every year
at the meet.
“Freshman year I was
super nervous, but now I’m
used to this and it helps my
performance,” she said.
“When you’re nervous,
you’re more shakey, but
now I’m more confident
when I go up.
3. New Trier boys
swimming and
diving. The
Trevians won
their fifth straight
sectional title last
weekend.
New Trier made a valiant
attempt to pull off an upset
on Friday, Feb. 15, but
a combination of injuries
that left the Trevians without
two of the best players
in the Central Suburban
League, live ball turnovers
that burned them for eight
breakaway baskets and a
15-point third quarter scoring
spree by Evanston’s
Lance Jones were too much
to overcome.
After trailing by one point
at both the quarter and at the
half and by four points at the
outset of the third quarter,
explosive Evanston struck
for 10 unanswered points
— all of which were scored
by Jones — to take control
of the contest and went on
to win 61-49.
The Trevians slashed
their deficit to 48-44 with
4 minutes, 13 seconds to
play but then they lost their
gusto.
“I was really proud of
the way our kids responded,”
coach Scott Fricke
said. “I’m happy with the
way these guys competed
against the fourth-best
team in the state. We were
putting kids in spots they’re
not used to and we had to
change some roles.”
The changes were dictated
because of the concussion
that has kept 6-foot-9-
inch senior Ciaran Brayboy
from playing since he sustained
the injury in the Feb.
Spencer Boehm brings the ball to the net for two points against Evanston Friday, Feb. 15, in Winnetka. David
1 victory over Glenbrook
South and a broken wrist
that 6-foot-5-inch senior
Sam Silverstein suffered
in the Feb. 8 loss to Niles
North sidelining him for
the rest of the season.
Their absence allowed
the shorter but quicker
Evanston to focus on limiting
the touches of the
Trevians’ third VIP, 6-foot-
8-inch senior Spencer
Boehm, and trapping ballhanders
in the backcourt to
produce turnovers.
“Live ball turnovers will
kill you against Evanston,”
Fricke lamented. “That’s
how they beat us.”
Even though New Trier
controlled play in the first
quarter the long distance
shooting of Blake Peters
kept the Wildkits close. Peters
had a four-point play
when he was fouled in the
process of launching a successful
3-point shot and
made the free throw and
he hit another trey later in
the quarter that ended with
Trevians clinging to a 10-9
lead.
In the second quarter the
Wildkits stifling defensive
pressure produced four
breakaway layups but New
Trier led 22-21 at the half,
thanks to a 3-point shot
at the buzzer by Charles
Sweat.
Although Jones scored
six points in the second
quarter following a scoreless
first quarter, he wasn’t
satisfied.
“My shots weren’t falling,”
the Southern Illinois
recruit said. “I don’t think
I was aggressive enough.
I told myself: ‘I need to
come out aggressive in the
second half.’”
His third quarter aggression
translated to 15 points
on the scoreboard, changing
the complexion of the
contest.
“We worked extremely
hard but we got a little
tired,” said Boehm, who
did a stellar job of keeping
the Trevians in contention
by scoring a team-high 18
points.
“It says a lot about what
we are as a team to give
them that kind of a game
when we were without two
of our best players. They
definitely are taught very
well on how to defend the
post.”
Last season Evanston
and New Trier shared the
CSL South Division title
with 8-2 records and the
Wildkits went on to finish
third in Class 4A in the
State Tournament.
This year the Wildkits
(25-4 overall) have the
CSL championship all to
themselves with a 9-1 record
and New Trier (22-5)
is assured of second place
with 7-3 record.
