Lincoln-Way holds Signing Day ceremonies

On Feb. 6, 2019, thousands of student
athletes participated in National
Signing Day, committing to pursue
an athletic and academic career at
the collegiate level. At Lincoln-Way
210, 40 seniors participated in Signing
Day by signing their letter of intent.

only lead at 3-2. A steal
and layup by junior guard
Tia Morgan put the Vikings
ahead 14-5 midway through
the opening quarter.
It was the final high
school game for Baumgartner,
a three-year starter for
the Knights.
“Abi was a three-year
varsity starter,” said Campanile,
who just completed
his third season as head
coach. “She came over with
me from [Lincoln-Way]
East, and she’s a lot of the
glue that held us together.
She was a great leader and
is going to be tough to replace.”
Baumgartner missed
three weeks this season with
a left ankle injury. But she
said she’s glad she got to
bounce back and finish her
senior season.
“They put a lot of ball
pressure on us [forcing 14
turnovers],” Baumgartner
said of the Vikings. “We
shut down their big girl
[Hall] in the first half but
they hit from the outside.
“I’ll definitely remember
my teammates. I was with
these girls for four months
and will miss them. But
I’m excited about what the
returning girls can do next
year.”

the quarter.
“We came out in the second
half and knew it was
time to step up,” Savic said.
“All of us stepped up.”
But the T-Birds scored the
final four points of the third
quarter to close within 36-
33. They added the first four
points of the fourth quarter
to briefly retake the lead before
East answered with an
8-1 spurt.
In the end, many of the
Griffin players had tears
inn their eyes as they were
overcome by the emotion
of spending all their energy
and falling a bit short. It was
the final game for the five
seniors on the roster: Sydney
Nekola, Savic, Sheehan,
Hannah Smith and Villa.
“It’s heartbreaking and
it’s just that I’m going to
miss them,” Savic said of
her fellow seniors. “We all
worked together. I’m going
to remember all our goofy
moments.”
Sheehan will remember
them, too, and then some.
“I’ve been with these
girls and coaches, not only
the last four years, but I’ve
played with many of them
since third grade,” Sheehan
said. “I will never have a
connection like I had with
these girls.”
In the playoff opener, on
Feb. 13, East defeated the
host Wildcats 67-42.
