MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
Martin Luther King, Jr., an American clergyman and Nobel Prize winner was
one of the principal leaders of the American civil rights movement and a
prominent advocate of nonviolent protest. King’s challenges to segregation
and racial discrimination in the 1950s and 1960s helped convince many white
Americans to support the cause of civil rights in the United States. After his
assassination in 1968, King became a symbol of protest in the struggle for
racial justice.
Honoring
Martin Luther
King, Jr.
In 1957, King helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference
(SCLC), an organization of black churches and ministers that aimed
to challenge racial segregation. As SCLC’s president, King became the
organization’s dominate personality and its primary intellectual influence.
He was responsible for much of the organization’s fundraising, which
he frequently conducted in conjunction with preaching engagements in
Northern churches. SCLC sought to complement the NAACP’s legal efforts to
dismantle segregation through the courts, with King and other SCLC leaders
encouraging the use of nonviolent direct action to protest discrimination.
These activities included marches, demonstrations and boycotts.
“I Have a Dream”
King and other black leaders organized the 1963 March on Washington,
a massive protest in Washington, D.C. for jobs and civil rights. On August
28, 1963, King delivered the keynote address to an audience of more than
200,000 civil rights supporters. His “I Have a Dream” speech expressed the
hopes of the civil rights movement in oratory as moving as any in American
history.
After his death, King came to represent black courage and achievement, high
moral leadership and the ability of Americans to address and overcome racial
divisions. Perhaps the most important memorial is the national holiday in
King’s honor, designated by the Congress of the United States in 1983 and
observed on the third Monday in January, a day that falls on or near King’s
birthday of January 15 th .
Board Members Re-Elected
At the November meeting of the Nottingham Country Board of Directors,
three Board members were re-elected and a new one joined the Board
(all two-year terms). Returning members include President Don Mach,
Bob Wills and Scott Murphy. Please welcome new member David Sander.
We also extend our deepest appreciation to Kim Svetlik, who concluded
her term after having served for 10 years. Remaining on the Board are
Suzie Bredlau, Kathryn O’Brien, Allen Hess and Horace Wills.
It’s A Good Time To Trim Trees
The beginning of the year is a perfect time to trim the lovely trees that
make our neighborhood so beautiful. Lengthy limbs can be hazardous
and they do create problems for our trash service personnel, particularly
in the alleyways. They can also cause problems for residents that have to
navigate the alleyways. Please do your part and take care of your trees.
Please Be Sensible With Fireworks
If you’re reading this before New Year’s Eve, please be considerate if
you’re going to shoot off fireworks. We all want to have fun, but let’s
remember our neighbors and cease and desist at a reasonable hour after
midnight. Fireworks are legal in unincorporated areas of Harris County
and Nottingham Country does fit that description. And please do a good
job of cleaning up as well.
Odds And Ends
We did replace one damaged picnic table in the larger pavilion at Rennie
Park. … Please keep your dogs from barking in the middle of the night.
… Thank you for taking your political signs down in a timely manner. …
Please don’t place trash by the curb two or three days before it is picked
up, particularly unsightly items like toilets and couches. … The revised
bylaws were approved by the HOA’s Board of Directors at the Annual
Meeting in November. Only a few minor changes were made; you can
view the updated bylaws on our website (address listed at the end of
this brief). … Please pay your HOA dues; they are due Dec. 31, 2018. You
should have received a bill in the mail. You can pay via the mail or online
via our website, www.nottinghamcountry.org.
Put Your Kid On Our Cover!
Krenek Printing, who produces our newsletter, would be thrilled to have
photo submissions from area residents for the cover of the newsletter.
You can photograph your kids or any other suitable neighborhood subject
- parks, wildlife, flowers, nature, etc. (Veritical/Portraits only please)
Please note that the photos must be high resolution, so that generally
means 3 megabytes or higher. Some cell phones do take photos of such
high quality, but please do check before sending them in. Otherwise,
they will not be suitable for use.
Please email photos for consideration to lorie@krenekprinting.com.
Please let her know you live in Nottingham Country and include any
credit that should be published regarding the photo. Names of children
and/or adults in the photo will be included by request only.
By submitting the photo, you are giving permission to use the photo on
the cover or inside of the newsletter, as well as other Krenek Printing
publications. The deadline is the 20 th of each month (photos received
by May 20 th would be eligible for use in the July issue). Best of luck!
and do not leave anything of value in plain view. If you do a lot of
Katy ISD Board Appoints
Acting Superintendent
During Katy ISD’s Regular Board meeting, Trustees voted to appoint
Deputy Superintendent Ken Gregorski as acting superintendent
effective December 1 st , until a permanent district leader is identified.
Superintendent Lance Hindt will continue to work closely with Mr.
Gregorski and the Board until his retirement in January.
“My fellow Trustees and I believe that Katy ISD needs a leader who will
continue to support the high quality leadership within, maintain our
standard of student excellence and advance the groundwork that has
already been laid,” said Board President Courtney Doyle.
Under Dr. Hindt’s leadership, Katy ISD schools have taken the top spots
in a number of regional, state and national rankings, graduation rates
continue to trend upward each year and students have consistently
outperformed their peers across the state. During Hindt’s tenure the
district also implemented its first ever strategic plan and developed and
passed a $609 million schools bond.
Mr. Gregorski has 26 years of experience in public education, which
includes roles as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal,
assistant superintendent and deputy superintendent.
The Katy ISD Board of Trustees continues to review and discuss options
for its superintendent search. As this is the most important decision a
school board makes, no definitive timetable has been set for the process
at this time.
Foster Children: Preparation For
Adult Living (Pal)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure
out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole
month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program
to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL).
The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by
the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at
Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by
local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that
help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@
Joe Joe Bear Foundation has been very busy! We had our Gold Tournament in October and it was a huge
success. Joe Joe Bear was out on the green hanging out with the golfers.
Joe Joe Bear Foundation Has Some Very Exciting News!!!
We are adding to our program. Our parents have asked and we have listened. By the 1 st of the year we will be adding and education program to our
website for Parents. It will have all the information a parent is looking for while coping with a child with a life threatening illness. We will also be
offering an online support group so parents can still attend while sitting in a hospital room with their child or home-bound and not able to leave
because their child is too sick. We plan on offering webinars on many subjects including seminars with top notch speakers. We want it to be a go to
resource for parents to turn to. The hospitals will be promoting it to the families and their other locations. This program will be able to reach families
nationwide not just in Texas. For more information about the Joe Joe Bear Foundation, visit our website at www.joejoebear.org.
Safe &
Healthy Kids
TEACH .... YOUR CHILDREN TO DEAL WITH PEER PRESSURE
Parents usually value children who try to please and are obedient.
Parents may not realize that learning to disagree with someone and to
make independent decisions starts at an early age. Decision making is an
important skill to teach your children. If children have been taught never
to disagree with anyone, parents may need to help them practice saying
“no” to their friends. Being able to say “no” in every day activities and
express their opinion helps children say “no” to alcohol and drug use.
MAKE.... FAMILY RULES
Develop family rules about the use of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs.
Make it clear to children in the family that they may not drink alcohol,
smoke cigarettes or use any other drugs. When children break any
family rules, provide reasonable, appropriate consequences. Be careful
about using severe punishments for small incidents of misbehavior.
Punishment becomes ineffective when it is over used.
PROVIDE .... HEALTHY CREATIVE ACTIVITIES
Participate in hobbies, school events and family activities with your children.
Sharing fun strengthens bonds between children and parents. Plan your
times together carefully. If all of your fun activities focus on movies, theme
parks or sports events, you and your children will give your attention to
the activity rather than to each other. Simple activities like taking walks
together, reading together or sitting around the kitchen provide time to
focus your attention on the children. Children who are left alone or who are
lonely and bored will seek friends, acceptance and stimulation with others
who may influence them to participate in harmful activities.
TEAM UP .... WITH OTHER PARENTS
Join other parents to keep track of where your children are, who they are
with and what they are doing. When parents form a “safety network” with
other parents, it’s much harder for kids to become involved in undesirable
activities. Tell your neighbors and the parents of your children’s’ friends
to let you know if they see your children doing something they shouldn’t
be doing.
22
TALK ... WITH YOUR KIDS ABOUT ALCOHOL & OTHER DRUGS
Let your children know that not everyone drinks, smokes or uses drugs.
MOST people do not use mind altering chemicals. It’s OK not to use
alcohol or drugs. Point out that anyone under age 21 is still growing
physically and that alcohol and other drugs will harm the developing
body.
LEARN .... TO REALLY LISTEN TO YOUR CHILDREN
Turn off the TV. Stop what you’re doing. Give your children your full
attention. Don’t interrupt, give advice or preach while your children are
talking. Ask questions to help clarify their thinking.
HELP .... YOUR CHILDREN FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES
Your children will feel good about themselves when you praise efforts
rather than accomplishments. Correct behavior by criticizing the
behavior rather than the child. Remember, if you tell children they are
“bad, ugly, mean, naughty, dumb,” etc., they will think of themselves that
way and act the way you have described them.
LEAD .... YOUR CHILDREN TO DEVELOP STRONG VALUES
Develop family standards about the kinds of behavior that are expected
of family members. Decide what you family stands for and refer to “our
community” and what “we believe” and how “we handle problems.”
BE ....A GOOD EXAMPLE FOR YOUR CHILDREN
Your behavior, habits and attitudes about alcohol and other drugs make
a strong impression on your children. In homes where children do not
know whether their parents approve or disapprove of the use of alcohol
or other drugs, children are likely to assume that their parents accept the
use of those substances.
KNOW .... WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT A PROBLEM
If the use of alcohol or other drugs creates any kind of problems for your
family, call one of the councils on alcohol and drug abuse listed. Most
provide free counseling.
Would Your Child Know What To Do If...
• He got lost at a shopping mall?
• A nice, friendly stranger offered her a ride home after school?
• A babysitter wanted to play a secret game that no one would know
about?
• A friend dared him to hitchhike?
START WITH THE BASICS
1. Rehearse with your child his or her full name, address and phone
number, including area code and how to make emergency phone calls
from home/cell and public phones.
2. Teach your child to go to a store clerk or security guard and ask for help
if you become separated in a store or shopping mall. Tell them never to
go into the parking lot alone. And when possible, accompany your child
to the restroom.
3. Tell your child never to accept gifts or rides from someone he or she
does not know well. Your child should never go anywhere with another
adult, even one who says you have sent him or her. Adopt a family code
word to be used if you have to ask a third party to pick up your child. And,
make sure your child knows to never ever, hitchhike!
4. Teach your children that no one, not even someone they know, has the
right to touch them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable. Tell
them they have the right to say “No” to an adult in this situation.
AT SCHOOL OR AT PLAY
Walk the neighborhood with your child. Pick out the safest route to
school and friends’ houses. Avoid danger spots like alleys and wooded
areas. Identify safe places to go in an emergency, like a neighbor’s house,
a block parent, McGruff House or an open store.
Encourage your child to walk and play with friends, not alone and to stay
in well-lighted, open areas where others can see them. Teach your child
to walk confidently and stay alert to what’s going on.
Don’t hang a house key around your child’s neck. It’s a telltale sign that
you won’t be home when they return from school. Put it inside a pocket
or sock.
Encourage your child to look out for other kids’ safety and to stay away
from strangers who hang around playgrounds, public restrooms and
empty buildings. A stranger is someone the child doesn’t know well.
Teach your child to remember and report to you the license numbers of
people who offer rides, hang around playgrounds or appear to follow
them. If a stranger tries to follow or grab your child, teach him or her to
scream “Stay away from me” or “This person is trying to hurt me,” and
run to the nearest place where people are around.
24
AT HOME ALONE
Make sure your child can reach you by telephone, wherever you are. Have
your child check in with you at work or with a neighbor when she or he
gets home.
Caution your child about answering the phone and accidentally letting
a stranger know he or she is alone. The child should say that parents are
busy and take a message.
Post important phone numbers near all your home phones.
Agree on rules for having friends over or going to someone else’s house
when no adult is present.
Work out an escape plan in case of fire.
Tell your child never to open the door to a stranger when alone at home.
(Consider the height of your child when installing a peep hole in your
front door.) Teach your child how to work door and window locks and
make sure to use them.
Discuss fun ways to be home alone. For example - feed pets, read books
or write a letter to a friend or relative.
January 2019 | Nottingham Country

5. Do a “childproofing” survey of your home. A child’s-eye
view home survey should systematically go from room to room,
removing all the “booby traps” that await the curious toddler
or preschooler. Think of poisons, small objects, sharp edges,
knives, firearms and places to fall.
6. Make sure immunizations are up to date. Review your
child’s immunization record with your pediatrician. Make sure
your child is current on recommended immunizations.
7. Practice “safety on wheels.” Make sure everyone in the
car is buckled up for every ride, with children in the back seat
in age-appropriate child safety seats. All bikers, skaters and
skateboarders should wear helmets.
8. Prevent violence by setting good examples. Hitting,
slapping and spanking teaches children that it is acceptable
to hit other people to solve problems. Non-physical forms of
discipline work better in the long run. Remember that words
can hurt too.
A Healthy, Happy New Year:
11 smart tips
1. Read to your children every day. Start by the age of six months. Reading to
children shows them the importance of communication and motivates them to
become readers. It also provides a context to discuss issues and learn what is
on your child’s mind.
2. Make your children feel loved and important. Kids develop a sense of
self-worth early in life. They get it from their parents. Listen to what your
children have to say. Assure them that they are loved and safe. Celebrate their
individuality and tell them what makes them special and what you admire
about them.
3. Provide your child with a tobacco-free environment. Indoor air pollution
from tobacco increases ear infections, chest infections and even Sudden
Infant Death Syndrome. If you smoke, consider quitting. Remember, the most
important predictor of whether your children will grow up to be smokers is
whether you smoke. Make your home a smoke-free zone.
4. Pay attention to nutrition. Nutrition makes a big difference in how kids
grow, develop and learn. Good nutrition is a matter of balance. Provide foods
from several food groups at each meal. Emphasize foods that are less processed,
such as whole grain breads and cereals and fresh fruits and vegetables. Review
your child’s diet with your pediatrician for suggestions.
9. Monitor your children’s “media.” Monitor what your
children see and hear on television, in movies and in music.
Children are affected by what they see and hear, particularly
in these times of violent images. Talk to your children about
“content.” If you feel that a movie or TV program is inappropriate,
redirect your child to more suitable programming.
10. Become more involved in your child’s school and your
child’s education. Visit your child’s school. Become active in
the parent-teacher organization. Volunteer in the classroom
or for special projects. Be available to help with homework. If
your child’s education is important to you, it will be important
to him.
11. Help kids understand tobacco, alcohol and the media.
Help your teenager understand the difference between the
misleading messages in advertising and the truth about the
dangers of using alcohol and tobacco products. Talk about ads
with your child. Help your child understand the real messages
being conveyed. Make sure the TV shows and movies your child
watches do not glamorize the use of tobacco, alcohol and other
drugs.
January
Gardening Tips
GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY
• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from
lack of food.
• Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering.
• Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms.
• Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones
rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat
in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter
into soil. Allow time for settling before planting.
• Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer.
Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from
plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in.
• Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage
to crown.
• House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open
pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias.
• Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture.
• Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open.
Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and
below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer’s directions
before spraying.
• Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs
in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted.
• Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not
remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds
swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and
others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant.
• Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds
break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of
debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses.
• Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants,
both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots
instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before
buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar
cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist.
• Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus,
including rotted manure.
• Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants.
Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect
low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather
warms.
