34 Federation Star March 2019 Preschool of the Arts update By Ettie Zaklos, Preschool Director It’s hard to read the news these days without seeing stories about the farm-to-table movement, the slow-food movement, organic food, sustainable agriculture and kitchen gardens. Here at Preschool of the Arts, we believe in teaching our children about the world around us, our responsibility to the environment, and our connection with nature. The environment, also known as the “third teacher” in Reggio philosophy, plays a crucial role in the learning experience of children. To bring that vision to life, our professionally landscaped Garden of the Arts and greenhouse on campus offers a comprehensive, natural outdoor space meant to engage the children in micro-environments. Students play an active role in creating the outdoor space by helping to plant our vegetable and sensory garden. In addition, our gardening specialist visits each week to lead planting and gardening projects, and to lovingly inspire our young students to discover the wonderful world of botany. The garden enlivens our school environment for the pleasure of our children and school families, and provides the optimal setting for engaging lessons pertaining to nature and the environment. In addition to beautifying our grounds, the garden allows our students to pick their own fresh snacks, and the children enjoy using the herbs and vegetables they grow to prepare healthy dishes in our Little Chefs program. It is so gratifying to see how the children have so much pride in their garden and to observe as they eagerly show off their hard work and beautiful plants to their parents on their way home. In January, our children had the opportunity for further in-depth exploration through a dedicated Gardening Day in honor of the Jewish holiday of Tu B’Shvat. Tu B’Shvat, which is compared to the Jewish Arbor Day, is traditionally known as the “birthday of the trees” and is a day that highlights our connections to each other and to nature. In keeping with the theme of the day, the children planted some fresh seeds in the Garden of the Arts and harvested broccoli sprout heads which they then got to take home. Our classes enjoyed delicious natural treats such as strawberries, basil, lavender and mint as well as the unveiling of a new fruit tree! The value of community is an important theme at our preschool, and so we made February “Community Helpers” month. Throughout the month we explored the careers of the people who enhance our lives, expanding the children’s understanding of the world around them. We welcomed parents and members of our community to visit and share their careers with our students. We are sure that the enriching experience left a lasting impression on our students and opened their eyes to new possibilities. FOCUS ON YOUTH GRANT RECIPIENT As the winter months fly by, our preschool team is also busy developing and enhancing our outstanding summer camp, as well as next year’s preschool curriculum. Our widely acclaimed summer program for children ages 18 months - 8 years integrates various creative arts and educational themes in a safe, multi-sensory and Jewish-spirited setting. This year our theme is “Animal Planet,” and it will allow your child to discover the wild and wonderful world around us as we learn about animals who live on land, sea and high in the sky! N B I Gardening at Preschool of the Arts emple Shalom Preschool update y Seyla Cohen, Preschool Director ur little ones really had a taste of a cold winter this month. They learned about hibernaion, snowflakes and even made snow. e celebrated our 100 th day of school ith parties and posters, and a few of our eachers and kids even aged and came o school as 100-year-old teachers and tudents! We had an amazing Mitzvah Day on ebruary 10. Our TSP families are very excited and involved, raising money for Meals of Hope, donating to the collection of items for Toiletries for Homeless Children, the Purple Bag Project, Humane Society and more. They came on Mitzvah Day and helped pack bags of toiletries for homeless children, supplies for children who are going through chemotherapy, and baked dog biscuits for the Humane Society. We are so proud of the parents’ involvement and setting the groundwork for showing their children the acts of mitzvot. We continue to feel blessed that the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples supports our programs. Through a generous grant, we were able to bring the acclaimed Billy Jonas to Temple Shalom Preschool for a free community concert. He was fantastic, and we hope to have him back again in the future. On Friday, March 22, TSP will host the 2 nd Annual Community-Wide Purim Carnival, another free event sponsored by a generous grant from the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples. The event will showcase Temple Shalom Preschool and celebrate Purim. We will have music, a bounce house, inflatable obstacle course, a petting zoo, stilt walker, Haman’s Dunk Tank, arts and crafts, a special Purim puppet show and, of course, hamentashen! The event is from 10:00 a.m. to noon, and everyone will dress up in their favorite Purim costumes! Pre-K and Lion’s Orientations were attended by our rising Cub and Lion’s parents, as well as new families, and those who were placed on our school GRANT RECIPIENT waiting list. It is a credit to our amazing teachers, staff and curriculum that we have an overwhelming interest in our outstanding school. Because of this, we are nearing our capacity and only a few spots are left. We are looking forward to another great new school year. It is that time of the year, Teacher Appreciation Week, when we come together to celebrate all the wonderful teachers who may have touched us in some special way. I am thankful for the amazing staff that works in our preschool. Our staff is highly qualified, but more importantly, they come every day with endless energy and enthusiasm for the important job they do. It is through their efforts that we are able to offer so many excellent programs and the TSP Experience to the children. Hooray to our teachers! On Sunday, April 7, Naples and ort Myers BBYO will be participating GRANT RECIPIENT in BBYO’s international day of giving called JServe. Our cause this year is to create awareness and assist the homeless children in our area. There are approximately 800 homeless children in need of food every day when they leave school in Naples. If you would like to help our cause, please donate food or, preferably, gift cards to restaurants and grocery stores. Drop them off or send them to Jessica Zimmerman, Jewish Federation of Greater Naples, 2500 Vanderbilt Beach Rd., #2201, Naples, FL 34109. Everything donated will be directly given to a homeless child in our community. We will be collecting donations through April 7.
