4 Federation Star March 2019 JEWISH FEDERATION Catholic-Jewish Dialogue presents My Brother’s Keeper By Richard Price Righteous Among the Nations is an honorific used by the State of Israel to describe non-Jews who risked their lives during the Holocaust to save Jews from extermination by the Nazis. This designation honors many ordinary men and women in countries of occupied Europe who showed great courage and compassion in helping the Jewish victims of Nazi terror. For the most part, these individuals did not plan to become heroes. The names of the rescuers are largely but not entirely unrecorded, and their good deeds often remain anonymous and unrewarded, except in the emotions of those they saved. They helped by providing hiding places, false papers, food, clothing, money, contact with the outside world, underground escape routes and sometimes even weapons. It is impossible to analyze the multiple reasons for individual heroism and ethical behavior under Nazi occupation. Explanations for heroism and creativity rest in the individual psyche and character. However, it is clear that compassion and simple decency played as large a role as bravery. Impartial and reliable information about the number of rescuers and the number of Jews aided or saved is not available. Very rough statistics indicate that about 2,000 non-Jews participated in the rescue of Jews and that they saved between 20,000 and 60,000 children and adults. An extraordinary work by author Rod Gragg, My Brother’s Keeper, depicts 30 captivating profiles of Christians from across denominations who gave everything they had to save the Jewish people from the evils of the Holocaust. This unlikely group of believers, later honored by the nation of Israel as “The Righteous Among the Nations,” includes ordinary teenage girls, pastors, priests, a German army officer, a former Italian fascist, an international spy and even a princess. In one gripping profile after another, these riveting historical accounts offer stories of steadfast believers who together helped thousands of Jewish individuals and families to safety. Many of these everyday heroes perished alongside the very people they were trying to protect. There is no doubt that all of their stories showcase the best of humanity – even in the face of unthinkable evil. Rod Gragg is a historian and the author of 20 book on topics in American history. And we are 675 members and growing! Here is just a sampling of events for March. The MCA monthly luncheon program continues on Thursday, March 14 with a presentation by Dr. Doug Zipes. The topic of his presentation is “From Terror Cells to Pharm Fraud, to Hitler’s Survival in World War II - Fiction that Tells the Truth.” The program will take place at the Audubon Country Club at 11:30 a.m. The cost of the event is $30 per member. Reservations should be made through Eventbrite. Be sure to indicate your menu choice of chicken or fish. The acclaimed Documentary Film Series, led by Steve Brazina, continues on Thursday, March 7 with the showing of the film The Oslo Diaries. This film presents personal stories of the participants in the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. There will be two showings of this film – 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. – in the Community Room of the Naples Daily News, 1100 Immokalee Road. Reservations are required. Members can sign up through the MCA website. The Monthly Speaker Series features MCA member Sam Varsano, who will speak about “A Young Sephardic Jew in an Ashkenazi Landscape.” The program will take place on Thursday March 7 at 10:30 a.m. in the David G. Willens Community Room at the Federation office. Advance reservations are required and can be made at mcanaples. org. The extremely popular Raisin Cane Tour slated for Tuesday, March 12 is currently sold out and a waitlist has been formed. Check the website for updates.
