EDITORS VOICE
It is funny how football grabs you, I mean lets
face it we are top of the table all be it by goal
difference and the boys are loving it, every
time we run out, every one gives 100%, blood
sweat and tears, we are lucky to have a band
of happy players, usually at this time of the
year teams stumble hard yet we are in this for
the long game, lets keep going as we are and
im sure come the end of the season, we will
be up there, flying the red flag, welcome to all
or East Yorkshire Carnegie friends, we hope
safe journey back across the bridge.
We have lost a footballing legend recently in
Gordon Banks, someone who I had met and
can say of him, he was gent a true nice guy of
the game, it just shows how awesome he was
in the fact that since his tenure as England
number one, abate Shilton and Clemence
there have been 31 goalkeepers who have not
had the success he did, God bless you Gordon,
LEAGUE NEWS
Craig Spink has become the new boss of
Harworth Colliery as the club strives to move
away from the Toolstation NCEL Division One
relegation zone.
He replaces Lee Needham who, along with
his management team, parted company with
the Colliery after Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at AFC
Emley, a result that left Harworth four points
away from safety in their first season back in the
NCEL.
A club statement said: “Craig will be joined by
Adam Valente as his assistant and both are
ready to come straight in and take training this
week ahead of our vital home game versus
FC Bolsover (on Saturday), whilst Ben Dixon
will remain in his current role as strength and
conditioning coach.
“The committee met with Craig this evening
after being very impressed with both his CV and
his approach to the game, and are delighted
that he was able to come straight in to the club.
“Craig ticked every box in what the club are
looking for and we look forward to him working
with the players this Wednesday.
“Craig, who has worked previously with Worksop
Town and more recently this season with
Frickley Athletic, is chomping at the bit to get
back involved and knows how important the
next eleven games are for everyone associated
with the football club.
“We wish Craig and Adam all the very best and
urge all our supporters to get behind them and
the lads this Saturday in what is a must win
game at the Jones and Co Recreational Ground.”
Harworth Colliery have announced that,
following Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at AFC Emley,
their management team have left the club with
immediate effect.
The news comes as they currently lie in the Division
One relegation zone, battling to preserve
their Toolstation NCEL status having returned in
the summer to the league for the first time since
1986.
A statement released on the club’s website said:
“The club would like to thank Lee Needham
(pictured), Tom Hague and Dave Rushbury for all
their hard work and commitment on what has
been a difficult season up to date.
“But, with just eleven games left of the season,
the club feels a change in management would
give us our best chance of maintaining NCEL
status.
“Time is running out for the club and after
Saturday’s defeat we remain second bottom,
four points away from safety.
“The Colliery will be looking to appoint the next
management not just for the short term but to
build the long term development of the club.
“It is vital that, through times of change like this,
the club remains together which includes all of
the playing staff as we feel what we have is good
enough to keep us up.
“And if the new management can add to this,
along with a good crop of younger players, we
have an excellent chance to stay up and eleven
games hopefully gives someone a chance to
come in and turn things around.
“Lee and Tom will always be remembered for
steering us to promotion last season after taking
charge in January.
“This became an historic campaign with the
club reaching Step 6 status again for the first
time in 32 years - now is the time to move things
forward, maintain our status and push on.”

TRAVELERS TALES
Barnsley away v Leeds United, Saturday November 29TH 1997, Oakwell Barnsley, I rarely
went away with my pals from the Road, not that it wasn’t fun, trust me it always was, usually
my pal Carl and I would drive from Grimsby to all the home games, except one when the
club sold out reserved seats v Spurs, I was gutted especially as we won 2 nowt, so to Oakwell,
those who have been will know there is an ultra-modern new stand not dissimilar to
the Stones stand at Blundell park and 3 old shacks, but the thing is I never got through the
gate, 3 pals and I entered the away end and as usual had some banter with the staff ,only
when you’re wearing a top that says Top Man, im not a comedian, I am the arch devil, well
come on should Barnsley of been in the Premier League, we were ushered by the troll sorry
steward, through here boys he said, just up there were my colleague is, unfortunately we
had paid 21 English pounds only to be ushered into a holding room guarded by two police
officers who not only lacked a sense of humour but also personnel hygiene, we heard goal
after goal, yellow cards and amazing goal keeping, we were told to leave a full half hour
after everyone else, we had missed the train and the coach so we thumbed it to the pub,
yes you guessed it a Tykes pub, thig is it was I guess one of my best nights out ever, great
people, good fun and very nice hospitality, so I hear you all ask, what did we do that caused
us to miss Leeds United best away game of the 97/98 season, I simply asked the steward
if his other 6 steward friends were going to be along soon and would they be singing hi ho,
Barnsley fans are in general great people, even to Leeds fans, the stewards, well without
doubt, it was a pantomime.
Just look below at the game stats, it was a corker, Gutted.
THE STORY SO FAR....
Grimsby Borough Football Club was formed when Louth United withdrew from all
senior competitions on the 17 th July 2003.With no competition in which to compete
and no base seven men Ken Holmes, Nigel Fanthorpe, Tony Hopper, Paul Storer,
Martin Blades, Stephen Newby and Albany Jordan formed a working committee
with the sole aim of ensuring a good standard of football stayed in the area. Nigel
Fanthorpe and Stephen Newby carried on their successful managerial partnership.
Completion of the club was recognised on the 2 nd September 2003 when affiliation
was granted by the Lincolnshire FA.
Every year since the formation of Grimsby Borough F.C. they have played at
successively higher levels in the amateur game. In the first year Borough came
second in the Lincolnshire Premier League and therefore applied to the Central
Midlands League Premier Division and were
unanimously accepted by the CML committee.
The following year Boro’, as the team is affectionately known, competed in the CML
playing at the Grimsby Institute site. Once again, we came second in the league’s
premier division but could not take up the well-deserved promotion until the ground
was up-graded.
That overdue promotion came the very next season: Grimsby Borough was
promoted to the Supreme Division of the Central Midlands League. Sadly, the CML
team had to leave the Institute site due to ground regulations.
Local firm, Nicol, stepped in at the eleventh hour and their generous financial
backing enabled us to negotiate a ground-share arrangement with Brigg Town F.C.
which gave us access to the finest pitch and facilities in the area. That season
ended on a high note when the club won the Centenary Junior Lincolnshire League
Cup beating Skegness Town- a very proud moment for all concerned.
The club received yet another accolade when they were invited to join the North
East Counties League, Division One for the 2009-2009 Season.
PAGE 14
2008-2009 was, of course, a tough season, meeting veteran clubs such as the
former nationwide team, Scarborough Athletic F.C. but the players upheld the
standards we expected of them, both on and off the pitch and a tough season
ended with Grimsby Borough finishing a very creditable 13 th position in the league.
The following season 2009-2010 ended successfully with another piece of
silverware, winning the prestigious Ashby Benovelent Cup beating Appleby
Frodingham in the final 4-3 after extra time.
The 2011-2012 season was the highlight for the Club, winning their first major
trophy in the Northern Counties League. They played Shirebrook Town in the Final
of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy and came out 3-1 winners after extra time after
being down to 10 men, a fantastic achievement for all involved at the club.
Further seasons passed by with no more silverware, Boroughs goal was to maintain
the standard of Northern Counties East League football which they have done to
this day.
At the end of the 2014-2015 season long term managers and club founders Nigel
Fanthorpe and Stephen Newby stood down after 12 memorable seasons.
The club then appointed Gary Precious and Andrew Thornton for the 2015-2016
season as successors but results failed to live up to expectations so Paul Walden
was brought in from Louth Town. Results improved as we moved away from the
relegation zone, but towards the end of the season the results dipped and
relegation became a reality again. Andrew Liddle and Daniel Barrett were brought
in to steer the club away from relegation. Success was achieved with a 18 th place
finish.
2016-2017 season was successful in terms of progress as the side got through to
the play off final only to be defeated by Penistone Church.
2017-2018 season was similar to the previous season were once again we got to the
play off final but were defeated by Eccleshill United. We progressed to
Lincolnshire Senior Trophy Final for the second time in our history but were
beaten on penalties by Holbeach United. Progress for the club had been achieved
once again.
