Barnsley away v Leeds United, Saturday November 29TH 1997, Oakwell Barnsley, I rarely
went away with my pals from the Road, not that it wasn’t fun, trust me it always was, usually
my pal Carl and I would drive from Grimsby to all the home games, except one when the
club sold out reserved seats v Spurs, I was gutted especially as we won 2 nowt, so to Oakwell,
those who have been will know there is an ultra-modern new stand not dissimilar to
the Stones stand at Blundell park and 3 old shacks, but the thing is I never got through the
gate, 3 pals and I entered the away end and as usual had some banter with the staff ,only
when you’re wearing a top that says Top Man, im not a comedian, I am the arch devil, well
come on should Barnsley of been in the Premier League, we were ushered by the troll sorry
steward, through here boys he said, just up there were my colleague is, unfortunately we
had paid 21 English pounds only to be ushered into a holding room guarded by two police
officers who not only lacked a sense of humour but also personnel hygiene, we heard goal
after goal, yellow cards and amazing goal keeping, we were told to leave a full half hour
after everyone else, we had missed the train and the coach so we thumbed it to the pub,
yes you guessed it a Tykes pub, thig is it was I guess one of my best nights out ever, great
people, good fun and very nice hospitality, so I hear you all ask, what did we do that caused
us to miss Leeds United best away game of the 97/98 season, I simply asked the steward
if his other 6 steward friends were going to be along soon and would they be singing hi ho,
Barnsley fans are in general great people, even to Leeds fans, the stewards, well without
doubt, it was a pantomime.
