Important Notice: The 2019 Highland Trails Annual Meeting has been 

scheduled for Tuesday, March 5, 2019 and there will be four (4) positions 

open for this election. You may submit your candidacy by emailing your full 

name and property address to: mpingleton@pmghouston.com or emorgan@ 

pmghouston.com or fax to 713-329-7198. Please include a brief introduction 

of yourself and how you can help the community. Please note that you must 

be listed as an owner of your property to run for the Board of Directors. 

Annual Assessments Reminder 

Please make a payment on your 2019 Annual Assessment as soon as possible 

if you have not already done so. If you have not received your statement 

you should contact Margie Pingleton at 713-329-7152 or mpingleton@ 

pmghouston.com or go to https://app.townsq.io/login to register to view your 

balance. PMG sends the statements and collects this assessment for Highland 

Trails HOA. The assessment is due January 1 st of each year and if not paid by 

January 31 st , PMG implements a collection procedure for pursuing delinquent 

accounts, which is a part of the management contract with the association. 

For each month an assessment or any portion thereof, remains unpaid, it is 

subject to interest and a $20 administrative charge is added to the delinquent 

owner’s account. Unpaid accounts are subject to reporting to the credit bureau, 

filing an affidavit of lien against the property and may result in foreclosure of 

the property. Any owner who is unable to pay the assessment when due is 

encouraged to contact PMG immediately before the assessment becomes late 

to make payment arrangements. Please refer to your Association’s documents 

for further information regarding the annual assessment. These documents 

can be found on the TownSq website/application. 

Deed Restrictions 

Inspections are done roughly once a month by PMG Houston and if you 

have received a letter or have any concerns about maintenance, please 

reach out to the Management Team.

Kindergarten Round Up 

Pattison Elementary Kindergarten Round UP night is Thursday, March 

21 st at 6 PM. This one-time spring event is for all incoming kindergarten 

students to meet the teachers and see the classrooms while parents 

hear about Pattison’s curriculum for next year. Students must be 5 

years old by September 1, 2019 to enter kindergarten. We will provide 

information for Pre-Registration which will be Thursday, April 18 th . For

Katy ISD Names 

New Superintendent 

Of Schools 

At the Katy ISD Work Study meeting held 

January 14 th , Board of Trustees voted 

7-0 to name Ken Gregorski as the new 

superintendent of schools. Gregorski 

is a veteran educator with 26 years of 

experience in public education. Having 

served as a teacher, associate principal, 

principal, assistant superintendent and 

deputy superintendent in school districts of different sizes and varying 

needs, he has demonstrated the ability to lead with determination, 

vision and a deep understanding of a community’s priorities. He is also 

the father of two secondary students currently enrolled in Katy ISD 

schools. “It is my mission to provide leadership and direction for Katy 

ISD to ensure our educational system is based upon the needs of our 

students, standards of excellence and equity and on community goals,” 

said new Superintendent of Schools Ken Gregorski. During his tenure as 

deputy superintendent, Gregorski played an integral role in laying the 

groundwork for the current model of student learning in Katy ISD through 

his supervision of the School Leadership and Support Department, 

Human Resources and the Athletics Department. As superintendent of 

schools, it is expected that Gregorski will maintain Katy ISD’s current 

direction, sustain its continuity of leadership and guide the District 

toward fulfilling the goals of its five-year strategic plan. 

Katy Virtual School 

Objective: The Katy ISD Virtual School’s primary objective is to expand 

the learning opportunities for our students by offering choice and 

flexibility for challenging online courses developed by Katy ISD. 

Vision: Online learning is an essential part of today’s learning culture 

that can provide our students with the opportunity to acquire required 

credit from anywhere and at any time. Online learning offers the unique 

experience of self-directed learning that will instill advanced learning 

skills as well as the Katy ISD Instructional Cornerstones in our students 

and better prepare them for life and college. In today’s world, this model 

of learning is increasingly in high demand and is a cost effective way 

to deliver instruction. It is a worthwhile investment in the future of our 

students and eventually can be self-sustained financially. Registration 

began February 1, 2019 for Summer 2019, Fall 2019 & Spring 2020.

Why Take Online Courses through the Katy ISD Virtual School (KVS) 

• Provide flexibility in scheduling: participate in multiple programs (i.e. 

Fine Arts, Athletics), earn required credits toward graduation and explore 

additional academic interests. 

• Fulfill state required courses for graduation when moving into Katy ISD 

from outside the state of Texas. 

• Provide online learning environments to prepare students for college 

and career learning. 

• Ongoing access to resources to support personalized learning. 

• Opportunity to access courses that are not offered on home campus 

due to low enrollment. 

• Allow students to attend specialized programs, camps and personal 

interests. 

• Courses are aligned to the Katy ISD curriculum and are taught by Katy 

ISD teachers. 

• KVS is an approved NCAA non-traditional provider. Courses count 

towards initial eligibility.

Katy ISD Names 

New Junior High 

After Joe M. Adams 

Katy Independent School District Board of 

Trustees approved to name the District’s 

newest junior high school after Joe M. 

Adams. The new school is currently 

being built in the southwest quadrant 

of the District in the Cross Creek Ranch 

subdivision. Adams served on the Katy 

ISD Board of Trustees for 27 years in every 

Board position and continues to be actively 

involved in various school and community functions. Adams served as 

director on the Gulf Coast Area Association of School Boards and was also 

part of the Board of Directors for the Texas Association of School Boards 

(TASB). During his time on that Board, he earned the distinguished honor 

of being a graduate of Leadership TASB and was named a Master Trustee. 

Adams was a Keep Encouraging Youth toward Success (KEYS) mentor 

and volunteer at Taylor High School where he was named Mentor of the 

Year in 2013. He actively participated as a Promise to Read and Junior 

Achievement volunteer. Adams was also a member of various PTA/PTO 

organizations and a Taylor High School Band Booster over the years. He 

also participated in various bond and attendance boundary modification 

committees and was a founding director of the Katy ISD Education 

Foundation. Adams’ dedication to these initiatives showcased and 

reflected his character, vision and values. His commitment to Katy went 

beyond his involvement in the District as he has served as a member, 

deacon and adult Sunday school director at Kingsland Baptist Church, a 

Katy Christian Ministries volunteer and a member of the Katy A&M Club, 

Houston A&M Club, 12 th Man Association and IMPACT. Adams was also a 

former soccer coach for local leagues. During his 27-year tenure at the 

Katy ISD Board of Trustees, Adams experienced the district’s exponential 

growth and was instrumental in ensuring that Katy ISD’s reputation for 

educational excellence continued. He brought a wealth of knowledge to 

his position and along with his genuine passion for public schools, made 

decisions based on what was in the best interest of the District’s students 

and employees. His contributions impacted thousands of students and 

their families. In addition to his steadfast devotion to the students of 

Katy ISD, his professional career consisted of 30 years in the oil and gas 

industry working for several serviced/drilling companies in New Orleans, 

Dallas, London and Cairo, Egypt. He is also a small-business owner in 

Katy, TX. 

Adams holds a B.B.A in Marketing from Texas A&M University. He and his 

wife, Donna, have two children and seven grandchildren.

Relay for Life of Katy/West Houston 

The Relay for Life of Katy/West Houston will be held on April 27 th from 5 

PM to 12 Midnight at Katy City Park, 5720 Franz Road. Come join in the 

fun and festivities while raising funds and awareness to fight cancer. 

Our theme this year is “May the Cure Be With You.” We will be honoring 

survivors and remembering those that have lost their battle to cancer.

SUNDAY, MARCH 3, 2019, NOON-4 PM 

Join the Houston community for a fun-filled day of festivities and a 

kosher chili competition during the 8 th Annual Houston Kosher Chili 

Cook-off. The event will be held at Congregation Beth Yeshurun, 4525 

Beechnut St., Houston 77096. The Kosher Chili Cook-off is the largest 

kosher food event in Houston and celebrates the fellowship of the Jewish 

community with a day of food, live entertainment, contests and family 

friendly activities while raising funds for nonprofit organizations in the 

Houston Jewish community. 

The cook-off attracts more than 3,500 attendees annually for live music, 

a moonwalk, climbing walls, balloon artists, a jalapeno eating contest 

and a silent auction as guests taste some of Houston’s best kosher chili.

“A NIGHT AT THE OSCARS” GALA 

The “Awesome, Amazing, Associates” of the Jack and Jill of America, 

Inc., North Houston Suburban Chapter will host a glamorous “A Night at 

the Oscars” charity gala on Saturday, March 23, 2019. The event will 

be take place from 8 PM to 12 AM at the Northgate Country Club, 17110 

Northgate Forest Drive, Houston, Texas 77068. Tickets are $75 each and 

the suggested attire is “red carpet formal.” 

“A Night at the Oscars” will benefit the Jack and Jill of America Foundation, 

which supports education, literacy, scientific and charitable projects

KATY AREA SAFETY FEST ORGANIZERS EXPECTING 

10,000 GUESTS FOR 4 TH ANNUAL EVENT 

The 4 th Annual Katy Area Safety Fest hosted by Harris County ESD 48 will 

be held on Saturday, April 13 th at Typhoon Texas off Katy-Ft. Bend Road. 

The family-friendly festival will begin at 10 AM and will end at 3 PM. The 

event is open to the public and admission is free. The Katy Area Safety 

Fest (KASF) will feature personnel, equipment and interactive activities 

from more than 20 emergency response agencies serving the Greater 

Katy community. The goal of KASF is to connect community members 

to the men and women who serve in these agencies as well as provide 

education and resources to encourage safety preparedness. Guests will 

see and participate in a variety of fun, educational, high-energy activities 

such as the Passport Challenge scavenger hunt, vehicle and equipment 

tours, live demonstrations of vehicle extrications and much more. 

Harris County ESD 47 and Westlake Volunteer Fire Department are cosponsoring 

the KASF Kids Zone, which will feature bounce houses, a corn 

field maze, obstacle course and ambulance load & go demonstration. 

Westlake Volunteer Fire Department is also leading this year’s Firehouse 

Challenge Cup, an open competition that encourages firefighter fitness 

and demonstrates the profession’s rigors to the public. Wearing full 

turnout gear and Scott 5.5 Air-Pak breathing apparatus, teams of 2 

will race head-to-head while simulating the physical demands of reallife 

firefighting. The Firehouse Challenge Cup is open to any members 

of a firehouse, including firefighters, EMTs and paramedics and admin 

personnel. There is no fee to enter and the 3 teams with the fastest times 

will win Firehouse Challenge Cup plaques. 

While most of the activities inside the festival will be free, rides in the fire 

truck tower buckets will cost a small fee. Food vendors will also be set up 

at KASF selling delicious treats and eats to festival guests. Members of 

School of Rock - Katy will provide live musical entertainment throughout 

the afternoon from the main stage.

Heroes Nominations 

Do you know a local Hometown Hero who should be recognized? If 

so, The Arc of Katy is seeking nominations from the public to honor 

two Hometown Heroes. The heroes will be honored at The Arc of Katy

Sleep In Heavenly Peace 

Every night in the Houston area, children sleep on couches, bean bag 

chairs or the floor because they don’t have a bed, especially since 

Hurricane Harvey. A local chapter of Sleep In Heavenly Peace (SHP) has 

been started for Central-Western Houston, including Katy and Fulshear. 

SHP is a nationwide 501(c)3 charity that builds and delivers beds to 

needy children using donated materials and volunteer labor. Sponsoring 

organizations (companies, churches, fire departments, etc.) donate 

materials and provide 20-40+ volunteers to produce 20-40+ beds in 

half-day “Builds” and SHP delivers to needy families. The half day bed 

Builds are an excellent Teambuilding or Service Project for organizations 

wanting to make their community better. For organizations unable to 

provide 20-40+ volunteers, labor can be supplemented from Scouting 

troops or high school students. Material costs for 20-40+ beds amount to 

$3,500-$7,000. SHP receives requests for beds at SHPbed.org in English 

or Spanish. Organizations interested in sponsoring a half-day bed Build 

can contact 832-795-2759. SHP was founded by Luke Mickleson in Twin 

Falls ID in 2012 and has since grown to 130+ chapters nationwide. SHP 

has been reported on by Lester Holt on NBC Nightly News and by Mike 

Rowe on “Returning the Favor” on the Facebook Watch Network. In 2018, 

Luke Mickleson was named one of ten Heroes of the Year by CNN.

In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting 

a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, 

vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. 

• Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. 

However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they 

have bloomed. 

• Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer 

analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square 

feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to
