Lockport resident embraces role as ‘heart mom’
Skelley family uses
experience from
son’s heart surgery
to help others
Max Lapthorne, Editor
David Skelley IV was a
jovial baby.
Born in August of 2014
to parents Jennifer and
Dave Skelley, David acted
like any other infant. He
laughed, cried and did everything
in between. But in
the first few months of his
life, David experienced a
number of seemingly minor
ailments.
Jennifer noticed her son
seemed to breathe fast and
even thought his lips turned
blue on a few occasions.
He had trouble digesting
formula, which led his
doctor to posit that he had
a milk allergy. But the accumulation
of symptoms
worried Jennifer, and when
David’s hair began falling
out in clumps, she was determined
to find out what
was wrong with her child.
“That was my last straw,”
Jennifer said.
The Lockport parents
took their 5-month-old son
to see his pediatrician, who
shared their concerns and
suggested they seek a second
opinion, which they
did the next day at Lurie
Children’s Hospital in Chicago.
And that’s when their
lives changed forever.
After undergoing an
echocardiogram, David
was diagnosed with a discontinued
right pulmonary
artery — an extremely rare
heart condition — and had
to be admitted immediately.
Lurie’s head of cardiac
surgery, Dr. Carl Backer,
performed open-heart surgery
to reconstruct David’s
pulmonary artery less than
48 hours after the diagnosis.
“[David] acted like a
normal kid throughout all
of this,” Jennifer said. “ ...
This poor baby, his heart
was basically pumping
against a brick wall for five
months and his body was
not getting the oxygen it
needed, because the right
pulmonary artery goes to
the lungs to get the oxygen
for the body.”
David, now 4 years old,
recovered well from the
surgery, but it was a whirlwind
few weeks for the
family, who spent almost
all their time in the hospital
with their son.
“We were thrown into a
situation that we were completely
foreign to,” Jennifer
said. “I had no idea what
was going to come out on
the other side of that surgery.
We had no clue. We
just had to go with what the
doctors would tell us. They
were very honest with us
and very upfront with how
things were going to go.
After his first surgery, they
had a really positive outlook
on what the outcome
was going to be.”
While David was recovering,
Jennifer and Dave
focused all their attention
on being advocates for
him, making sure he had
everything he needed. And
while Jennifer said the
nurses and doctors at Lurie
were always attentive
and helpful and they were
able to stay at the nearby
Ronald McDonald House,
there was still little time
for them to think about
much outside of their son’s
medical care.
That is where the Pediatric
Congenital Heart Association
of Illinois came in.
The organization, which
is dedicated to “conquering
congenital heart disease,”
Parents Dave (left) and
Jennifer Skelley pose for
a photo with their son,
David. Photo submitted
according to its website,
also provides support to
families such as the Skelleys
who are affected by
congenital heart disease.
“PCHA is an organization
that is for support of
parents,” Jennifer said.
“When we were in the hospital,
we received a bag
full of [essentials]. It has
the things you don’t think
about — the ChapStick,
the socks, something to do,
something to read, a nice
plush for the baby, something
to color, something to
keep them occupied.”
The Skelleys greatly appreciated
the gifts, but it
was not until later that they
checked out the informational
pamphlets that were
also stuffed in the bag. That
was when they discovered
PCHA and Jennifer officially
became a “heart
mom.”
“In the moment, you
have no idea what’s going
on, and you’re very overwhelmed,”
Jennifer said.
“It wasn’t until after the
fact that I was like ‘I need
to contact these people.’ I
guess I feel a very big urge
to give back to them and
help other people.”
Jennifer has been a volunteer
at PCHA ever since,
and has built a network of
heart moms who are able
to support each other in a
unique way.
“It’s important to have
the family and the friend
support, but sometimes it’s
nice to have somebody that
knows what’s going on and
has been there,” Jennifer
said.
The Skelleys relied on
that support in March of
2016, about a year after David’s
initial surgery, when
an adverse reaction to a
routine procedure caused
him to suffer a stroke and
briefly “code.” He was
revived quickly, but the
stroke left the 18-monthold
paralyzed on his left
side.
“The second time, I already
had my network of
heart moms,” Jennifer said.
“My friends were calling
me, my family was calling
us, but nobody understood
what I was going through
more than those heart
moms.”
The PCHA volunteers
provided support for Jennifer
and Dave after the setback,
and it also helped that
David exceeded almost all
expectations when recovering
from his stroke.
“I remember meeting
with the therapist the first
day and he said ‘OK, what
are your goals?’ And I said
‘Well my goal is for him
to walk out of here like
he would have been able
to walk in,’” Jennifer said.
“He kind of looked at me
like I was crazy, like that
wasn’t going to happen. I
think within three days of
him being there, he was
walking.”
The toughness and determination
David showed
in battling his medical issues
in the first two years
of his life have now manifested
in the personality of
the 4-year-old Taekwondo
green stripe.
“Now that we see him at
this age, we can see why
he did so well recovering
from all the things he went
through,” Jennifer said.
As a PCHA volunteer,
Jennifer is currently working
on the organization’s
seventh annual Conquering
CHD Walk/Run. The
event is to take place May
19 at the College of Du-
Page. For more information
about the walk/run,
visit www.runsignup.
com/Race/IL/GlenEl
lyn/ConqueringCHD
Illinois. The organization
also hosts bi-monthly
meetings where various
experts are brought in to
speak, and funds research
to help combat congenital
heart disease.
“I feel the sense of obligation,”
Jennifer said of
working with the PCHA.
“So many moms were able
to help me through some
situations. ... Since I started
working with the PCHA, I
just want to be the person
that could get you through
the day if you need it.”
Some bleeding during
David’s procedure required
the use of stents, which he
will likely outgrow eventually
and will need to be replaced.
But for now, he has
no physical restrictions,
outside of a recommendation
to avoid contact sports,
and visits his cardiologist
once per year. And while
the days and weeks leading
up to the annual appointment
can be stressful, the
Skelleys know their family
and the PCHA will be there
for them.
“The support is amazing,”
Jennifer said of the
PCHA. “They’re there to
help you. You don’t know
what to ask doctors when
you’re in that situation,
you don’t know anything.
They’re there to make sure
that you have someone
to talk to and someone to
bounce things off of.”
ASK
YOUR
LAWYER
by T. Andrew Coyle
Attorney at Law
With the weather hopefully
warming up soon, the real estate
market will likely start getting
busier. If you are thinking of
buying or selling a home, it is a
good idea to hire an attorney who
can help you through the process.
From reviewing the contract, to
negotiating issues that arise from
the home inspection, to checking
all the figures at the closing, there
are a lot of moving parts to a
real estate transaction. For most
people, their home is their single
largest asset; however, most
people aren’t familiar enough
with the process to understand
the documents they have to sign
and the fees that are charged
(and which fees you can ask be
waived). Having an experienced
real estate attorney helping you
will ensure that your interests
are being looked after. If you
need help buying or selling your
home, please call THE COYLE LAW
Students raise thousands for Kids Heart Challenge 2019
Alex Ivanisevic
Assistant Editor
As part of its annual
fundraising tradition, the
Goodings Grove School
and community has
worked since December
to make a donation to the
American Heart Association
and educate students
on the importance of heart
health.
Total proceeds raised
were announced Feb. 22
during the Kids Heart
Challenge 2019 assembly
at Goodings Grove.
Through a number of
events — including duct
taping someone to a wall
— students, staff and families
who participated raised
$24,322 for the AHA,
which is $3,100 more than
last year and exceeded
their goal of $15,000. The
money helped save more
than 487 lives, according
to the school.
The assembly marked
the end of the fundraiser
led by Goodings Grove’s
Principal, Ann Christie,
and the physical education
teachers, Nathan Keasler
and Tammie Ebel.
“Goodings Grove has
done the American Heart
Association fundraiser,
now called Kids Heart
Challenge, [since 2002],”
said Ebel, who has been a
physical education teacher
at the school for four years.
“It’s kind of a staple in our
building, so the kids know
what to expect.
“We’re a very small
school that raises a lot of
money,” Ebel said, noting
the school has approximately
375 students in
grades one through four.
Each year, the two
teachers meet with Stefani
White, senior director of
youth market for the AHA,
early in the school year to
set dates for the challenge,
which they usually plan
Goodings Grove Principal Ann Christie was duct taped
to a wall Feb. 22 during the Kids Heart Challenge 2019
fundraiser for the American Heart Association.
Photo submitted
around February, “with
it being national heart
month,” Ebel said.
The kickoff for the fundraiser
begins in December.
The school starts selling
red heart T-shirts as one
of the ways to raise money
for the association. The
T-shirt sales alone raised
$1,050 this year. A few
other methods of raising
money included popcorn
sales during school lunch,
a Valentine Lollipop Sale
and selling “heart scarves”
made by Mrs. Christie and
some students.
The mission of the fundraising
process goes beyond
raising money; it is
also about educating the
students.
“For about four weeks,
our P.E. curriculum revolves
around heart activity
— what it takes to
have a healthy heart,” Ebel
said. “We explain that we
fundraise for children who
have heart disease.”
“It’s really great, we call
it our heart month and a lot
of the activities in P.E. are
based around the heart,”
said Keasler, who has
taught physical education
at the school for six years.
The themed activities
throughout the month pair
nicely with the fundraising
aspect, Keasler said.
“I think it is great that
we as the P.E. teachers
do this because it’s based
around being healthy and
[it] gives us a chance to
teach a lot of science and
health ,” he said. “It means
a lot to us seeing the kids
light up and learn things
and I think the gym is the
best place for them to learn
[heart health] information.”
Ebel agreed, saying:
“We are running the event,
but our families are a huge
part of this as well as our
fellow teachers and staff
here at Goodings Grove.
We depend on a lot of people
to help with the event.”
Keasler said he believes
the total funds raised
throughout the years have
been so high because of
the Goodings Grove community
and families.
“[Fundraising for AHA]
has become such a tradition
here,” he said.
The two gave a special
thank you to the Homer
Glen Meijer for donating
items for the assembly,
to Stefani White for her
help and said thank you
to Principal Christie who,
“has been amazing and
every single year has done
kind of a silly thing to get
funds,” Keasler said. “This
year we duct taped her to
the wall.”
Ebel said Christie is passionate
about raising money
for the AHA. White has
worked on the Kids Heart
Challenge with Goodings
Grove for six years and
would agree.
“Nathan Keasler, Tammie
Ebel and Principal
Ann Christie are what I
like to call ‘The Dream
Team.’ They truly embrace
what the AHA is about,”
she said. “They understand
the donations raised
are important for funding
research and helping people
with sick hearts, but
more importantly they are
experts at getting the kids
excited to take care of their
own hearts.”
White said a moment
she “will not forget” was
seeing Christie’s emotional
reaction when she found
out how much money the
school had raised.
This year was Christie’s
13th and final year as a
principal helping to raise
money for the AHA as she
will be retiring at the end of
this school year, but plans
to continue fundraising.
She has been a principal at
Goodings Grove for four
years, and was the principal
at Schilling School
before that. Over the years
she has assisted in raising
more than $194,225 for
the association.
“It has been absolutely
incredible to educate children
about living healthy
and active lives,” Christie
said, calling it the most important
part.
“I wanted a cure for
kids,” Christie said. “It has
been a rewarding process
working with the students
to raise money and meet
Goodings Grove’s goal of
being philanthropic.”

The Legend takes a look
back at the past 8 years
Newspaper
celebrates 8th year
in publication
Staff Report
The Lockport Legend
recently celebrated its
8th birthday on Sunday,
March 3. First appearing
in Lockport mailboxes
on Thursday, March 3,
2011, the newspaper staff
remembers eight unique
things that have happened
in Lockport since The Legend
started.
1. The creation of
Lockport Love
The nonprofit began in
2014 as a way to offer relief
to Lockport families
who need help in a time
of need. The organization
raises money throughout
the year and receives donations
from individuals and
local businesses to help
support its mission. They
will host a candlelight
bowl fundraiser at 6 p.m.
May 17 at Strike ‘n Spare
II, 811 Northern Drive,
Lockport. Tickets are $25
and can be purchased at
www.lockportlove.com.
2. unLOCK: Merging
Art and Industry in
Downtown Lockport
During the summer of
2018, The Gaylord Building
led the charge for this
citywide art experience
that not only highlighted
its historic heritage but
also its recent revitalization
efforts, particularly in
the downtown area. Funded
through a grant by the
National Endowment for
the Arts, ten artists created
multimedia works that
were installed throughout
downtown Lockport.
3. The Roxy returns
The Roxy Theater at
1017 S. State St. opened its
doors to the public for the
first time in years in 2018.
Owned by New Lenoxbased
nonprofit Trinity
Services, Inc., the building
was renovated and now
shows movies as well as
the occasional trivia night
and other special events.
4. Development continues
After 2008, development
in Lockport continues
to build slowly. With
several commercial projects
completed along 159th
Street in the Interstate 355
corridor, Lockport Square
will also be home to a new
Holiday Inn Express as
well as a new Marcus Cinema
movie theater.
5. Lincoln funeral
flower
The Will County Historical
Museum and Research
Center, 803 S. State
St., made a significant find
among its archives in 2018
— a collection of flowers
that were lain on the funeral
bier of President Abraham
Lincoln in Washington,
D.C., in 1865.
6. Steampunk takes
over downtown
In 2014, Steampunk
Weekend was introduced
as part of the city’s Summer
Art Series. The annual
summer festival celebrates
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
New studio specializes in
feminine fitness
“We live by a code. The
Barre code.”
This is part of the mantra
written on the wall inside
New Lenox’s newest
fitness studio, The Barre
Code, 2544 E. Lincoln
Highway. The rest of the
motivational code talks
about striving for beauty,
believing in one’s body and
strength, accepting differences
and realizing one’s
potential to make a difference.
The meaning behind the
mantra fosters building
strength, confidence and
body positivity within the
women who work out at
the full-body fitness studio.
The Barre Code franchise
began back in 2010
in Chicago and expanded
across the United States.
Its namesake comes
from an isometric exercise
called “the barre,”
which allows deep muscle
stretching. Owner of the
New Lenox location, Kim
Burla, brought the franchise
to the Lincoln-Way
area to increase accessibility.
“I’ve always had a love
for barre classes,” Burla
said. “It’s inconvenient
for many women who,
like me, had to drive long
distances, like Lombard,
to get to classes. I thought
that this was the perfect
location to follow up with
my dreams of owning
one.”
What makes The Barre
Code different from competitors
also located along
Lincoln Highway is the
focus on women’s fitness
regimen. The Barre Code
offers different programs
such as cardio kickboxing
and total body conditioning
to target key areas of
the body.
“The Village is excited
to have Barre Code join
our growing community,”
Economic Director Coordinator
Nancy Dye said.
The studio is to open
Saturday, March 16.
FROM THE TINLEY JUNCTION
Coffee with a Cop returns
for busiest year yet
The Tinley Park Police
Department has geared up
for its busiest year of Coffee
with a Cop. Now in the
program’s third year, Coffee
with a Cop is returning
with eight different dates
throughout the year to give
citizens more opportunities
to meet police officers
and speak about issues or
concerns in their neighborhood.
On Feb. 26, the first Coffee
with a Cop of the year
was held at Creative Cakes
in Tinley Park. Cmdr. Stan
Tencza and Civilian Crime
Prevention Officer Dina
Navas worked together
to schedule the dates and
locations that run once a
month through September.
“It gives us a way to
communicate with citizens
of Tinley Park,” Tencza
said. “They see us in a different
light — one that’s
more approachable.”
Officer Jon Mittelman
is participating in his second
year of the program
and said he likes to answer
people’s questions and
hear their feedback.
“When we have interactions
with the public, often
it’s not under the greatest
circumstances — emergencies,
ticketing, law
enforcement-type things
— so this gives us an opportunity
to just field questions
and get to know people
and they can express
Keeping our hearts in our minds
Max Lapthorne
max@lockportlegend.com
We take our hearts
for granted.
It seems
bizarre that we could take
for granted a pump in our
chest that is constantly
working to keep us alive,
but I know I do, and I
would guess many of our
readers do as well.
I don’t blame anyone,
myself included, for not
spending more time thinking
about our hearts. It’s
human nature to not pay
much attention to things
that don’t require it regularly.
Some people show
their appreciation for their
hearts by eating healthy
and exercising regularly. I
do my best in these areas,
but I feel I owe my heart
an apology for my love of
cheeseburgers and mozzarella
sticks.
For most of us, our
hearts operate in the background
of our lives. We
reap the benefits of their
tireless efforts and don’t
think twice about them.
But many people do not
enjoy that luxury.
Congenital heart
disease affects 1 in every
100 children born in
the United States, and
heart disease kills nearly
400,000 Americans per
year, according to the
American Heart Association.
February is known
as National Heart Month,
but in this, our first issue
of March, we have two
stories featuring people
who are making a difference
for those affected by
heart disease.
Our news cover story
on Page 3 tells the story of
Editor’s Note
March 21 is the
final issue for all
election coverage
in The Lockport
coverage is
to run March 28. The
election is Thursday,
of Illinois after the
organization provided her
her son’s diagnosis.
On Page 4, you will find
a story about a fundraiser
for the American Heart
Association put on by
Goodings Grove School in
Lockport. The school has
done a fantastic job raising
thousands of dollars
for the association, and
those efforts have been led
by Principal Ann Christie
for the last several years.
Christie has spearheaded
the fundraiser every year
she’s been principal, and
although she’s retiring
at the end of this school
year, she will leave having
helped raise nearly
$200,000 for the American
Heart Association.
My admiration for
people who take it upon
themselves to help others
for no reason other than
the betterment of the
world cannot be confined
to words on these pages.
Putting others before one’s
self is not always easy,
and those who go out of
their way to do it should be
commended. That’s why
I’m thrilled to be able to
share both of these stories
with you this week.
Danceworks 2019 showcases
beauty through movement
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
Without ever speaking
a word, the members of
Lockport Township High
School’s Orchesis Club
weaved together compelling
stories and complex
emotions told through
original choreography during
Danceworks 2019.
Held on the evenings
of Feb. 27 and Feb. 28 at
Lockport Township’s East
Campus auditorium, the
program featured more
than 60 students performing
ballet, jazz, hip-hop
and more styles of dance.
Sophomore choreographer
Trinity Newell was
inspired by sounds as well
as steps in creating her tap
piece, “Backstabbers.”
“I’ve been tap dancing
since I was 5,” Newell
said. “I like it because you
can hear the sounds and
you know what’s right and
what’s wrong by the way it
sounds when you dance. I
was inspired by the music
that I chose. Music speaks
to me as a dancer, and I
think that a big part of being
able to dance to your
fullest is the music.”
Family and friendship
converged in a piece by
Rawydah Abulaban — an
LTHS junior from Homer
Glen — as she and her
dancers, including Narmeen
Shehadi, of Lockport,
and Asim Abdallah
shared a traditional Palestinian
dabke.
“Since I was young, every
time we’d go to a party,
I’d be the one to start
dancing and lead lines,”
Abulaban said of dabke.
Shehadi added that she
learned a few new steps
Lockport resident Trevor Shingler performs as a
member of “Happy” Feb. 27 during Danceworks 2019
at the Lockport Township High School East Campus
auditorium. Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
from Abulaban’s choreography
and Abdallah
explained that while he always
loved dancing dabke
as a child, his appreciation
for the art form has only
grown.
“I’ve been doing this
dance since I was younger,”
Abdallah said. “I
learned from my father
because he used to do a
dance like this when he
was in high school and I
just took right after him.”
Orchesis members have
been preparing for Danceworks
2019 since the October
auditions. More than
20 pieces were selected for
the final program.
Freshman contemporary
choreographer Mackenzie
O’Connor has been
a dancer since she was 2
years old. She calls dance
her “happy place” and was
inspired by the talent and
personalities of her friends
in creating her piece
“Somebody that I Used to
Know.”
“All of my best friends
are in the dance with me,
so I kind of based it off
what I know we can all
put together,” O’Connor
said.
The show began with
a guest dance choreographed
by the LTHS
Advanced Dance Class
before the members of the
Orchesis Club showcased
their talents. Natalie Mattson’s
“Happy” was a joyful
celebration and Lexi
Quemeneur’s “A Drop in
the Ocean” was a patient
and pretty representation
of relationships.
Orchesis Director Diane
Sniegowski — who oversees
the club with assistant
director Michelle Cannon
— said the 2019 participants
were wonderful to
work with in preparing for
Danceworks.
“Every year I enjoy
working with these students
so much,” Sniegowski
said.
O’Connor said the club
is an organization full of
friendship and positivity.
“It’s a lot of fun and you
meet a lot of new people,”
O’Connor said. “It’s a really
good environment.”
Over the years, the Roxy
played host to films, musical
performances, comedy
shows and more. On
Thursday, Feb. 28, almost
50 participants came together
The evening’s participants
were divided into two
Crete, Lynda Caneva, of Lockport, and Lynn Doyle, of
Lockport, paint a trio of blue skies Thursday, Feb. 28,
at a Paint Night event at the Roxy Theater in Lockport.
Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
depicting a gorgeous night
sky – the former led by
instructor Monica Adamo
and the latter by instructor
Jen Klouse. Both artists
provided step-by-step
instructions on their individual
pieces, which captured
the theme “Coming
Home,” while also encouraging
Paint Night attendees
to put their own spin on the
motifs.
“The one thing I’m really
passionate about with
art is that you can make it
your own,” Klouse said.
“So one picture is going to
look totally different compared
to the person next to
them and compared to the
person next to them. We
want everyone to walk out
with something that they
enjoy and that they’re happy
with.”
“I’m excited to see
where people are going to
take it,” Adamo added.
Crest Hill resident Lupe
Relles has the heart of an
artist and she signed up
for the event to learn a few
techniques to support her
passion for painting.
“I love art,” Relles said.
“I like playing around with
it. They said you need
no skills to sign up, so I
thought I would come out
and see.”
While Relles was working
on Adamo’s daytime
“Coming Home” piece in
the bar area of The Roxy,
New Lenox resident Jody
Indovina — joined by her
husband Carl Indovina, a
Trinity staff member —
was in the adjoining room
working on her interpretation
of Klouse’s nighttime
painting.
“I can’t even draw a stick
figure,” Jody Indovina
joked. “I’ve always wanted
to try a Paint Night and,
since this was with Trinity,
I thought it was a perfect
time to do it.”
All proceeds from the
event are to go toward Trinity
Services to help fund its
mission, according to Meredith
Dobes, communication
and media development
representative at the
non-profit organization.
“We did get a lot of interest
from the community for
this program, and it’s really
meant to encourage people
to learn more about Trinity
and support Trinity and
what we do,” Dobes said.
Sherry Ladislas, director
of development at Trinity
Services, stated that even
if Paint Night attendees
themselves are not in need
of Trinity’s resources, perhaps
they know someone
who is.
“We provide residential
services and community
based day program services,”
said Ladislas, noting
that Trinity also offers a
number of programs for the
community at large for everything
from grief to anger
management. “We also
have employment services
for people with disabilities
and mental illness, as well.
We still have a school program
as we originally started
out as a school in 1950.”
Some attendees signed
up to create a work of art,
some to spend a fun night
out with friends and others
were driven to participate
simply to support Trinity
Services.
“I’m here because it supports
Trinity,” said New
Lenox resident Erin Malinowski,
who was a mom
of former Trinity participants
and is now a current
employee of the organization.
“They always put the
person who is receiving
services first. It doesn’t
matter how inconvenient it
is for staff. If it’s something
that benefits that person’s
life or helps that person
get a job or whatever it is
they’re working on, that is
Trinity’s first priority. It’s
such a good organization.”
Along with a calendar
full of events and programs
for Trinity participants,
the nonprofit also is hosting
a slew of activities for
the public. It’s Golf Classic
will be held in Tinley
Park on May 16 and the
group will be returning to
the Roxy Theater on April
6 for A Night of Decadence
for Autism Awareness.
Miguel and Rocio Vargas
hope their new restaurant,
which opened in January,
can bring “something different”
to the community: a
taste of Mexican cuisine at
affordable prices.
Today, the couple lives
in Joliet with its two young
children, but both owners
have roots in Mexico.
Miguel hails from Mexico
City, while Rocio grew up
in Guanajuato.
Miguel said he learned
how to cook from his family
and has always enjoyed
spending time in the kitchen.
“We’re thinking about
bringing pozole and menudo,
authentic Mexican
food,” Miguel said. “We’re
working hard. It takes time.
... In the beginning, it was
just me and my wife, but
now we’ve got help.”
Miguel said the tacos
are the restaurant’s most
popular item, and the classic
dish is served two different
ways: American
style, which comes with
the familiar toppings of lettuce,
cheese and tomato,
and Mexican style, topped
with cilantro and onion.
Customers can choose to
fill their tacos with steak,
chorizo, chicken, ground
beef or vegetables, and
opt for either individual
tacos ($2.25 apiece) or the
taco dinner ($7.85), which
comes with sides of Mexican
rice and refried beans.
On Taco Tuesdays, the tacos
sell for $1.99 each.
Another popular dish
is the shrimp fajita dinner
($17.99), which consists of
shrimp grilled with tomato,
onion and red and green
bell pepper with the diner’s
choice of corn or flour tortillas.
The dinner is served
with a large plate of shredded
cheese, guacamole,
lettuce, tomatoes, refried
beans and Mexican rice.
The restaurant also offers
a large collection of Mexican
beverages. Casa Vargas
serves house-made aguas
frescas ($2.19 for a small
drink, $2.99 for a large),
or flavored waters, which
come in strawberry, mango,
lemonade and horchata varieties;
in addition to sangria
($2); five flavors of
Jarritos ($1.25), a popular
brand of Mexican soda; and
adding sopapillas,
a type of fried pastry, to the
menu, Rocio said, adding
the dish has been well-received
by diners who have
Distinctive Home Builders Introduces New Craftsman Homes
In Manhattan and Peotone – From the mid-$200’s
New designs are a result of buyer feedback
Two refreshing designs mark
the beginning of a new series
of Craftsman-style homes
available from Distinctive Home
Builders at its latest new home
communities: Prairie Trails;
located in Manhattan within the
highly-regarded Lincoln-Way
School District and at WestGate
Manor in Peotone within
the desirable Peotone School
District.
“Craftsman homes were
introduced in the early 1900s
in California with designs
based on a simpler, functional
aesthetic using a higher level
of craftsmanship and natural
materials. These homes were a
departure from homes that were
mass produced from that era,
“according to Bryan Nooner,
president of Distinctive Home
Builders.
“The Craftsman design has
made a comeback today for
many of the same reasons it
started over a century ago. Our
customers want to live in a home
that gets away from the “mass
produced” look and live in a
home that has more character. As
a result of our daily interaction
with our homeowners and their
input, we are excited to introduce
these two homes, with additional
designs in the works.”
Nooner, who meets with
each homeowner prior to
construction, has been working
on these plans for a while and felt
that the timing was ideal for the
debut. “Customers were asking
for something different and
simple with less monotony and
higher architectural standards.”
The result was the Craftsman
ranch and the Prairie twostory,
now available at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
The Craftsman ranch features
an open floor plan with Great
Room, three bedrooms, two
baths and a two-car (optional
three-car) garage. The Prairie
features a two-story foyer and
Great Room, three bedrooms
and one and one-half baths, a
convenient Flex Room space
on the main level and a two-car
(optional three-car) garage. The
Craftsman architectural elements
on both homes include brick and
stone exteriors with cedar shake
accent siding, low-pitched gabled
bracket roofs, front porches with
tapered columns and stone piers,
partially paned windows, and a
standard panel front entry door.
Distinctive Home Builders
offers a Craftsman-style trim
package offering trim without
ornate profiles and routers. The
trim features simplicity in design
with rectangles, straight lines and
layered look trims over doors for
example. The front entry door
will have the standard Craftsman
panel style door. Distinctive has
also created a Craftsman color
palate to assist buyers in making
coordinated choices for the
interior of their new Craftsman
home. Colors, cabinet styles and
flooring choices blend seamlessly
with the Craftsman trim package
and are available in gray tones
package and earth tones.
Distinctive offers custom maple
kitchen cabinets featuring solid
wood construction (no particle
board), have solid wood drawers
with dove tail joints, which is
very rare in the marketplace.
“When you buy a new home
from Distinctive, you truly are
receiving custom made cabinets
in every home we sell no matter
what the price range,” noted
Nooner.
Distinctive Home Builders
works to achieve a delivery goal
of 90 days with zero punch list
items for its homeowners. “Our
three decades building homes
provides an efficient construction
system,” said Nooner. “Many of
our skilled craftsmen have been
working with our company
for over 20 years. We also
take pride on having excellent
communicators throughout our
organization. This translates into
a positive buying and building
experience for our homeowners
and one of the highest referral
rates in the industry.”
Nooner added that all homes
are highly energy efficient. Every
home built will have upgraded
wall and ceiling insulation
values with energy efficient
windows and high efficiency
furnaces. Before homeowners
move into their new home,
Distinctive Home Builders
conducts a blower door test that
pressurizes the home to ensure
that each home passes a set of
very stringent Energy Efficiency
guidelines.
With the addition of these two
new designs, there are now 15
ranch, split-level and six twostory
single-family home styles to
choose from each offering from
three to eight different exterior
elevations at both communities.
The three- to four-bedroom
homes feature one and one-half
to two-and-one-half baths, twoto
three-car garages and a family
room, all in approximately 1,600
to over 3,000 square feet of living
space. Basements are included in
most models as well. Distinctive
also encourages customization
to make your new home truly
personalized to suit your lifestyle.
Oversize home sites; brick
exteriors on all four sides of the
first floor; custom maple cabinets;
ceramic tile or hardwood
floors in the kitchen, baths and
foyer; genuine wood trim and
doors and concrete driveways
can all be yours at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
Most all home sites at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor
can accommodate a three-car
garage; a very important amenity
to the Manhattan homebuyer,
said Nooner.
“When we opened Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor we
wanted to provide the best new
home value for the dollar and
we feel with offering Premium
Standard Features that we do
just that. So why wait? This is
truly the best time to build your
dream home!”
Prairie Trails is also a beautiful
place to live and raise a family
featuring a 20-acre lake on site,
as well as direct access to the 22-
mile Wauponsee Glacial Prairie
Path that borders the community
and meanders through many
neighboring communities and
links to many other popular
trails. The Manhattan Metra
station is less than a mile away.
Besides Prairie Trails,
Distinctive Home Builders
has built homes throughout
Manhattan in the Butternut
Ridge and Leighlinbridge
developments, as well as in the
Will and south Cook county
areas over the past 30 years.
Distinctive Home Builders
chose the Will County village
of Peotone for its newest
community of 38 single-family
homes at WestGate Manor
within walking distance of the
esteemed Peotone High School.
Its convenient location between
Interstate 57 and Illinois Route
Successful season helps
‘shift’ LTHS program
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
The Lockport Township
boys basketball team
might eventually look
back at this season and say
it was the one that helped
turn the program around.
But it came to a sudden
and disappointing end last
week.
Hoping to advance to
their first regional title
game since 2011, the Porters
fell behind early and
just couldn’t hit a big shot.
On the other side, Plainfield
North hit plenty of
them and went onto a 58-
44 victory over Lockport
on Feb. 26 in the second
semifinal of the Andrew
Class 4A Regional.
Lockport (14-13) which
was the No. 7 seed in the
East Aurora Sectional, was
led by 16 points from senior
guard Jake Karli. The
Porters finished with their
first winning season since
2012 but also lost their last
four games and eight of
their last 11 after starting
the season 11-5.
Instead, it was No. 10
seed Plainfield North (15-
15) advancing to the regional
championship for
the first time since 2016.
“They played well and
made shots,” Lockport
coach Brett Hespell said of
the Tigers. “We had a lot
of looks at the rim and we
didn’t make shots. They
made us pay and they deserved
to win it.
“Obviously it’s a disappointing
end to the season,
but the quality of these
kids is unmatched. We
hope this is a shift in our
program. This is the first
Lockport senior Quinn Gardner looks to make a pass
during a game earlier this season. 22nd Century Media
File Photo
time since 2007 that every
level of our program had
a winning record. That’s a
credit to these seniors and
what they’ve done. They
will have success down
the road.”
The eight Lockport seniors
were: Quinn Gardner,
Aaron Grcevic, Tommy
Halatek, Matt Hatzopoulos,
Karli, Eric Keta, Blake
Sartin and John Vassilakis.
The Tigers jumped out
to an early lead and it held
up the whole game. Ahead
16-11 after one quarter,
they extended that to 24-
14 midway through the
second quarter. Sartin (9
points) sank a 3-pointer
and Karli made a short
shot in the lane, but Plainfield
North converted a
layup just before the end
of the quarter to go ahead
26-19 at halftime.
The key to the game was
the third quarter. Halatek
(11 points, 8 rebounds)
muscled in for consecutive
layups to open the quarter
and bring Lockport within
26-23. That was the first
of four times the Porters
would close within three
in the quarter, but never
got closer than that.
“It was pretty frustrating,”
Halatek said. “They
were shooting really well,
got out in front of us and
we couldn’t catch up.”
Ahead 35-32, Bridges
banged in a pair of 3-pointers
and Lucas scored on a
rebound basket with just a
second left to cap an 8-0
run over the last 1:59 of
the third quarter. That put
Plainfield North ahead 43-
32 after three. The Tigers
wrapped the game up by
going 6-of-8 from the free
throw line in the final 1:25
of the game.
Karli gave up football
this past season to concentrate
on basketball. As a
point guard and three-year
varsity player, he was a
leader on the team.
“I feel like there are
some games we could
have won,” Karli said.
“There are other games we
showed flashes of promise,
but in the end, all those little
things caught up. What
I will remember are all
the friends I made here at
Lockport.”
10 Questions
with Jackie Mathius
Jackie Mathius is a senior
at Lockport Township and
three-time state qualifier
on the girls track and field
team.
What are your goals
for this season?
I’m looking to run in
college, so a lot of college
coaches want to see me
running in the 400, as well
as the 200. Plus, I will be
in a couple of the relays.
So my goal is to qualify
for state in the 200, 400
and hopefully a relay.
How did you get
involved in running
track?
I was in seventh grade at
Oak Prairie, and Mr. [Steven]
Wedewer had us run
a half mile in a physical
education class. He said,
“You’re pretty fast, you
should run track.” So I
gave it a try and have been
running it ever since.
Do you play any other
sports?
I played soccer for 10
years. But when I got to
high school, soccer and
track are in the same season.
So since I couldn’t do
both, I had to choose one
and I picked track.
What makes track the
sport for you?
In soccer, I really liked
the team aspect. But for
me, it felt like a better fit in
track. I get my own times,
I can compare with my
times over the years and
go against myself. I get to
compete against the top
people, and that pushes my
abilities.
Why is the 200 your
top event?
For me, it’s the endurance,
the high stakes; it’s
so fast and a big adrenaline
rush. I also like it better
than the shorter races like
the 55 and 100 because my
legs are a little longer, and
it takes a little time for me
to get my stride going.
Do you prefer to run
solo races or relays?
I like relays better.
That’s because I get to
bond with the team, and
you all have to be in sync
with the handing off of the
baton. I like the challenge
of working with everyone
and the team aspect.
Do you have any
superstitions before a
race?
Yes. My serious one is
that I get in my head, and
it pushes me to have positive
thoughts and pumps
me up. Also, I have a fun
thing where I get some
dried mangos and eat
them before a race. I also
bring enough for the others
and have been doing
that since freshman year.
Also when I get in the
blocks before a race, I
do the same thing where
I shake my arms and legs
to get ready.
What have you
learned from Lockport
Randy Whalen/22nd
Century Media
girls track coach Joe
Kravitz?
He tells me to always
push myself to be the best
and to just worry about
competing against myself.
Just have a positive
mindset and the only thing
stopping yourself is you.
Believe it and make it happen.
Have you committed
to a college yet?
No. I’m in the process
of finalizing some honors
classes when I’m looking
at colleges. My grades are
really important to me. I
want to go into biomedical
engineering. My sister,
Ashley, is a junior in college
for it right now at the
Illinois Institute of Technology.
What is the best thing
about being an athlete
at Lockport?
The coaches. They always
push you to do your
best, and they are always
there for you. They will
work one-on-one with you.
Porters boys
basketball hopes to
build off success
from season
1. Time to reflect
The Lockport boys
basketball team
saw its season end
Feb. 26 with a 58-
44 loss to Plainfield
North in the semifinal
of the Andrew
Class 4A Regional.
But the team still
finished with a
winning record for
the first time since
2012.
2. Positive aspects
The Porters jumped
out to an 11-5 record
to begin their
season and every
level of the program
had a winning
record for the first
time since 2007.
3. Leading in points
Senior guard
Jake Karli scored
a team-high 16
points for Lockport
in its final game of
the season.
Porters win six-team
invite at Joliet Central
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
This year’s girls track
and field team is big, and
the Porters are expecting
big things.
The Porters return four
state qualifiers from last
season and also had the
3,200-meter relay qualify.
Plus, with upward of 150
girls out on all levels, there
are plenty of people waiting
for an opportunity.
Thirty-one of those team
members ventured down
the road to the 10th Annual
Steelmen Shuffle on
Thursday, Feb. 28, at the
Joliet Central field house.
There, Lockport (114
points) won the six-team
invite.
“This is the first time
I remember winning
this,” Lockport coach Joe
Kravitz said of the invite.
A trio of the Porter state
qualifiers from last season
participated in the meet.
Senior Jackie Mathius
(1:04.59) was second in
the 400-meter run at the
meet. In the pole vault, last
season’s state qualifier,
senior Andi Hennessey,
went 9-feet-6 inches and
finished third. But her
teammate Kathleen Kwiatkowski
was second at 10
feet.
As a freshman last year,
Josephine Bober went
to state in the 3,200-meter
run, but last Thursday
she was edged out by
teammate Elizabeth Bollinger.
“I want to run under 12
minutes in the two-mile,”
Bollinger said.
In the 55-meter hurdles,
Grace Mildice (2nd, 9.53
seconds) and Jary Zuno
(8th, 10.39) were the top
Lockport finishers.
Emily Thompson (4-10)
took second in the high
jump, and Marisa Brown
(16-01) was second in long
jump.
In the 800-meter relay,
Marisa Brown, Lexie Fontaine,
Gabby Ellstrom and
Angelica Iwan were second
(1:54.21).
But the top Porter performer
of the day, as voted
on by her teammates afterward,
was sophomore
Abby Hagen. She not
only won the 1,600-meter
run, but she also won it by
nearly 22 seconds with a
time of 5:45.51. Teammate
Eleanor Fahrner (6:29.05)
was fourth.
“That was the first time
I’ve got the plaque,” Hagen
said of receiving
the Person of the Meet
award. “It felt good, and
[distance] coach [Regan]
Cronholm has been really
helpful. I’m just expecting
some faster times and
some [personal records]
this season.”
“I feel like there are some games we could have won. There are other games
we showed flashes of promise, but in the end, all those little things caught
up. What I will remember are all the friends I made here at Lockport.”
