From <strong>the</strong> general eulogium pronounced on <strong>the</strong><br />
writings of Lu<strong>the</strong>r, Glapio excepted one work–<strong>the</strong><br />
Babylonish Captivity. Th<strong>at</strong> work was not worthy of<br />
Lu<strong>the</strong>r, he maintained. He found in it nei<strong>the</strong>r his<br />
style nor his learning.<br />
Lu<strong>the</strong>r must disavow it. As for <strong>the</strong> rest of his<br />
works, he would propose th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y should be<br />
submitted <strong>to</strong> a select body of intelligent and<br />
impartial men, th<strong>at</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>r should explain some<br />
things and apologise for o<strong>the</strong>rs; and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Pope,<br />
in <strong>the</strong> plenitude of his power and benignity, would<br />
reinst<strong>at</strong>e him. Thus <strong>the</strong> breach would be healed,<br />
and <strong>the</strong> affair happily ended. Such was <strong>the</strong> little<br />
artifice with which <strong>the</strong> wise heads <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> court of<br />
Charles hoped <strong>to</strong> accomplish so gre<strong>at</strong> things. They<br />
only showed how little able <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>to</strong> gauge <strong>the</strong><br />
man whom <strong>the</strong>y wished <strong>to</strong> entrap, or <strong>to</strong> f<strong>at</strong>hom <strong>the</strong><br />
movement which <strong>the</strong>y sought <strong>to</strong> arrest. Pontanus<br />
looked on while <strong>the</strong>y were spreading <strong>the</strong> net, with a<br />
mild contempt; and Lu<strong>the</strong>r listened <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> plot,<br />
when it was <strong>to</strong>ld him, with feelings of derision.<br />
