Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Ab.
Since Feb. 15, over 3,600 participants,
19 sports and 10 nights of cultural entertainment
as part of Canada’s largest multi-sport
and cultural event for youth.
Alberta in particular surpassed the alltime
medal count for the province as they
took home 100 medals, including a record 36
They finished in third place behind
Quebec and Ontario.
Alberta also claimed the
Centennial Cup for showing
greatest improvement, and
the Jack Pelech Award for
best combination of good
sportsmanship, fair play,
cooperation and competitive
performance.
Vicki Friesen, owner of the Tickle Trunk costume shop in Three Hills, had her work cut out on Thurs. Feb. 28,
thanks to the inordinate amount of snow and drifting that has kept residents and town crews busier than usual
this winter.
ECA Review
A number of new businesses
took out business
licenses in Delburne in
January 2019.
Village council reacted
positively at their Feb. 22
regular council meeting as
the inclusion of these new
business ventures will ease
the burden of the commercial
tax base.
Some of these include a
new bake shop, a deli and
art gallery, a niche soap
shop and an energy services
outlet.
Council received a request
from the Boys and Girls
Club of Red Deer for funding
to host three two-day sessions
to benefit children in
Delburne.
The matter was referred
to administration for further
action.
Also, the matter of future
seniors’ housing engendered
some discussion as did the
issue of combining waste
disposal and recycling services
under one contract.
No final decision was
made regarding the two
issues.
The Delburne Medical
Centre Agreement was
reviewed and several
Coronation Deputy Fire
Chief, Chris Brearley
updated town councillors at
their regular meeting Mon.
Feb. 25 explaining they had
three volunteer members
away for a course as they
were running short of
drivers with their air brake
endorsement.
He also noted that they
have been asked to join the
Delburne council
changes in wording and
dates was agreed to by
council and directed to
administration to revise.
Council gave third and
final reading to the Fees and
Charges By-law for the village
in which adjustments
were made to the water
rates, both the flat rate and
additional consumption
rate.
Website improvements
Council was given a short
visual presentation on
improving the website for
the Village.
The changes would
include brighter colourful
pictures, more information
via video links, more events
listed and adding councillor’s
bios.
“Our website needs to be
more easily readable and
eye catching!” said Deputy
Mayor Jeff Bourne.
The website will be
divided into four major
headings: Business
Development, Information
for Residents, Recreation
and Culture, and Explore
Delburne.
Council plans to finalize
the new website at their two
council meetings in March.
Big Valley Council
Traffic Bylaw tabled pending research
Terri Huxley
ECA Review
Big Valley council delved into the
current Traffic Bylaw on Feb. 28,
finding many changes that can help
maintain up-to-date regulations
involving traffic management.
They agreed to table the discussion
in hopes of allowing administration
time to change the bylaw to fit their
needs and find some answers to their
questions by sharing the bylaw with
different levels of authority including
the RCMP.
First reading has already taken
place but Coun. Harry Nibourg found
the fines not reflective of what Council
would like to see implemented.
A parked vehicle carrying dangerous
goods on an undesignated
highway results in a $100 fine for the
first offence compared to a resident
parking a recreational vehicle (RV) for
$200.
Both can be deemed abandoned after
72 hours.
The bylaw also states that anyone
who has mechanical issues and can
not move the RV immediately are not
in breach but should be making
arrangements to get said vehicle
moved, especially in an area that
requires regular access.
“So a guy can pull up here and park
out there with Uranium 238 or yellow
cake and not even get a $100 fine
whereas someone who pulls their
trailer up here gets a $200 fine.
“We are actually saying that parking
a trailer is more detrimental than dangerous
goods like radioactive drill
fluid or whatever you find here in
town,” said Coun. Nibourg.
Nibourg requested they either
increase the fine to match the RV fine
or make it higher.
Another issue brought forward was
the certain amount of people allowed
in an area like a sidewalk or street as
pedestrian traffic is heavy when the
Alberta Prairie Railway Excursion
comes to town as part of their local
tourism.
“
It’s no different
than having your lawn
“It’s put in place for situations where
you have people who are causing a disturbance
while they are doing that and
it gives bylaw enforcement or RCMP
the ability to disperse them while
acting under a bylaw,” explained Chief
Administrative Officer (CAO) Michelle
White.
This bylaw falls under the Traffic
Safety Act (TSA) legislated across
Alberta as provincial ruling has
authority over municipalities.
Any vehicle that occupies the
roadway must be registered with headlights
and tail lights.
Administration asked the RCMP to
look at whether or not they can allow
people to use their golf carts in the village
but they weren’t able to find
anything that lets council accomplish
Councillor steps down
Terri Huxley
ECA Review
Delia Coun. Dawn Bancroft has
stepped down
from Village
Council for personal
reasons.
A by-election
will be scheduled
at the next
council meeting
set to take place
next week on
Wed. Mar. 13.
Elections are
handled under
the Municipal
Government Act
(MGA) and the
Local Authorities
Election Act.
Municipalities
are required to
hold an by-election
within 90
days of the councillor’s
resignation while
the Local
Authorities
Election Act
states how the
nomination process
works.
Once the date
for the by-election
is set, the Village
will accept applications
up to six
weeks prior to
this date so
people have time
“
this through bylaw or other measures.
“It’s no different than having your
lawn mower and driving down the
road,” said Nibourg. “Now if I take my
lawn mower and I drive it, it’s considered
a motorized vehicle. I can not
insure it.
“I can register it with the town so it
is usable in the town. Now we can have
a bylaw so we can snowmobile here.
“The RCMP do not dictate in our village
for lawn mowers, golf carts,
snowmobiles, any things like the tub
mobile or whatever.”
Mayor Sandra Schell mentioned
that golfers are allowed to take the
most direct route to the golf course at
this time but if they want to go for a joy
ride they are not permitted and are at
risk of being fined.
“I can definitely go from my house
to the golf course because that is what
has been reasoned but if I’m deciding
to drive around town and go – if they
stop me I’m getting a ticket. This has
happened numerous times in Big
Valley,” said Mayor Schell.
Big Valley’s Traffic Bylaw was first
enacted in 1973 with little changes
since then making this review the
most in-depth.
application earlier with the proposal of
having this grant cover the hall rental
Carbon, Morrin, Trochu schools participate
in national anti-bullying initiative
Terri Huxley
ECA Review
Three local schools
showed their support
for a
well-established
anti-bullying initiative
known as Pink
Shirt Day on Wed.
Feb. 27
Carbon, Morrin
and Trochu Valley
schools all participated
in a number
of activities to promote
the message of
kindness and
strength in the face
of adversity.
The schools
attended the third
annual ‘Be Brave’
themed Calgary
Hitmen hockey
game on Wed. Feb.
27 at the
Saddledome to
show their support
for the initiative
and message it
holds.
Almost 15,000
staff and students
attended the game.
“It was very
good,” began
Trochu Valley
School Principal,
Leana Howard. “It
was very
organized.”
“Koodos to the
Hitmen Hockey Club and
the people that work at the
Saddledome,” added Carbon
School Principal, Marci
Steen. “It was run so well
like they had it right down
to a science to where our
buses went so it just flowed.
It was really, really well put
together. They do a great job
at putting it all on.”
Trochu got lucky as they
were seated in the first five
rows behind the net so they
were able to capture all the
action up close.
Two guest speakers spoke
to the audience at intermission
with inspirational
messages as well as a ‘movement
break’ during the
second period where
everyone danced to a Taylor
Swift song as if in a flash
mob.
“We did receive the dance
to practice so as a junior
high we learned this dance
with funky steps to it,” said
Steen.
Akeem
Haynes, 2016
Olympic bronze
medalist and selfhelp
author,
spoke in the first
intermission
while Rilee
Manybears, an
athlete from
Siksika Nation
and ambassador
for the AMA
Youth Run Club,
spoke at the
second
intermission.
Each student
received a pink
t-shirt with ‘Be
Brave’ plastered on the front
as they entered to further
the momentum of the game.
“All these people come
Trochu Valley School students take in the Calgary Hitmen hockey
game from the first five rows of the Scotiabank Saddledome on
Wed. Feb. 27. From the left, Grade 7 students JC-Lyn Clearwater,
Eden Cowan, Cydney Fetterly, Charlie Olson and Alix Geier smile
for a photo while at the game.

together for the same kind
of purpose,” said Steen.
“I know we use the language
a lot but we don’t
always live it and it’s really
cool to just see everybody
pull together and they say
it’s anti-bullying which is
fine but what can we do?
“I love the approach of the
guest speakers around
[how] you can only control
you and you have to do right
by you. It takes away that
whole ‘them against us’
point of view. It was just
really good.”
The greatest impact the
anti-bullying day has
brought is consistent messaging
for students to take
into adulthood, hopefully
instilling morals and values
at an early age.
“I’m a firm believer in the
opinion that when you give
a kid the background and
the understanding and you
keep repeating the message
over and over – sometimes it
doesn’t feel like they’re actually getting
it but as they mature and as they
move forward in life, those foundational
beliefs and values are what they
come back to,” said
Howard.
“We have to teach
them about kindness
but we also need to
teach them how to
face that adversity
and how they can
build themselves up
so that they are less
affected when something
negative like
that happens.”
Steen agreed
saying everyone must
walk the walk to keep
this momentum
going.
“This Pink Shirt
Day was really important
and the Be Brave
game but this is something
that we really
have to live everyday
Politics of being, not doing
Brenda Schimke
ECA Review
We don’t need either
Conservative Leader Andrew
Scheer or NDP Leader Jugmeet
Singh calling for Prime
Minister Trudeau’s resignation,
that’s the people’s job
when we go to the polls this
fall.
What we need from both
Scheer and Singh is to do their
jobs. Thanks to the Globe &
Mail, we know all about the
SNC-Lavalin affair but we have
yet to hear from Opposition
leaders as to changes they
would make to stop this practice
occurring in the future.
Last week, I wrote about the
‘too big to fail’ scenario—politicians
taken hostage by big
money and multi-national corporations.
But there is other
less obvious, but significant
pitfalls in our current parliamentary
practices that enabled
the SNC-Lavalin affair.
First, we learned about the
imprudence and perils of one
person holding both the Justice
and the Attorney General portfolios.
It creates a natural and
dangerous conflict of interest.
In Great Britain, the
Attorney General (AG) is a
non-cabinet position that provides
legal counsel to the
Cabinet, but first and foremost
is the top legal officer of the
land. Although an elected MP,
the AG answers to Parliament.
On the other hand, the
Secretary of State for Justice is
a member of cabinet responsible
for developing policies

Editorial
that meet political ends. Israel’s
AG performs the same role, but
it has even more independence
as an unelected senior
bureaucrat.
The independence of the
Israeli AG was clearly on display
last week when it charged
Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu with bribery and
breach of trust even while in
office.
As important as this separation
of power is to the rule of
law, so too is the recent introduction
of Deferred
Prosecution Agreements
(DPA).
Hidden deep in the bowels of
a 556-page omnibus budget
implementation bill passed by
the Liberal majority in
September 2018 was a provision
to allow for DPAs.
The DPA is another procedural
import from the USA
which is used to protect corporate
wrongdoers from being
brought before the courts to
face criminal charges.
These agreements are negotiated
behind closed doors and
replace criminal convictions
with fines, remediation measures,
enhanced reporting
requirement and maybe third
party oversight for a time.
Stop and think about the
implications—corporations
have not only become ‘too big
to fail’, but also ‘too big to be
held liable for criminal
activities’.
The Conservatives under
Stephen Harper imported the
American omnibus bill plaque
into Canadian legislative proceedings.
He and Trudeau have
both used this non-transparency
tool to slip through
corporate largess and coverups
to the disadvantage of the
masses.
What Trudeau did was not
illegal, it was political. If Singh
and Scheer do not bring forward
specific changes to
eliminate the possibility of
another SNC-Lavalin affair,
but only campaign on
Trudeau’s unethical failings, it
matters not whether it is a
Liberal, Conservative or New
Democratic government.
Promoting anger and emotions
to win elections, rather
than presenting substantive
changes to correct identified
problems, is simply the ‘politics
of being, not doing’ thereby
insuring the same results
regardless of who is in
government.
by Herman Schwenk
It has been an interesting week. I
think the ‘sunny ways mask’ has
finally come off of Trudeau. Even the
mainstream media could not sugar
coat this event.
Nobody, especially Trudeau, his
office and the Liberal party expected
the damning evidence that came from
Jody Wilson-Raybould in her presentation
to the justice committee on
Wed. Feb. 26, 2019.
In that very detailed and explicit
testimony she set a high bar and came
across as being very credible; much
different than the Prime Minister
who has never come across as being
really credible.
So often he sounds like he is
making a presentation on stage.
To me, Trudeau came across as a
true hypocrite. He says one thing in
one part of the country and the opposite
on the other side of the country.
Regardless of what question he was
asked on this issue, even before
Wilson-Raybould’s testimony, his
answer was that his priority was to
protect jobs.
“
It seems that when
it suits his purpose the
strict rule of law is not so
important.
His concern was that there would be
9000 jobs lost if
“
“
SNC-Lavalin was convicted of fraud
and thus be forbidden from bidding on
government contracts for the next 10
years.
To me, that is just a red herring. If
SNC could not bid on those contracts
somebody else would. All that would
happen is that those engineers and
contractors would be working for a different
company.
What Trudeau really was concerned
about was the welfare of a large corrupt
liberal-friendly corporation, not
the welfare of the workers.
Our Prime Minister is blatantly supporting
a large fraudulent corporation
and he appears to take no shame in
that.
If it is a benefit for the Liberal party,
rules and morality can be bent to
accommodate the need. You will constantly
hear him talk about upholding
the rule of law. Especially when he is

mail bag
Act as Albertans
Dear Editor,
1.) These are merely suggestions.
Do what you will.
In Alberta, we do, if something
needs doing. No one
told me to write this. I just
felt it needed to be done.
2.) Fly your Alberta flag.
We have one in our front
window. It is just a natural
extension of our Alberta
license plate, our Alberta
health care cards and our
Alberta drivers’ licenses.
Knowing this, it seems –
to us – strange that many
Albertans fly Oilers flags,
Flames flags, Canadian
Flags - without an Alberta
3.) Be contrary to ‘conventional’
thinking.
Here’s one of my most contrary
thoughts: Vote “NO”
in the next “federal”
election.
This is not a “spoiled”
ballot (one which is
exchanged for a new one).
This one – in fact - makes
it into the ballot box but is
counted as “rejected”
because you did not mark
one of the “conventional”
choices.
The federal election is
usually decided before the
ballots are even counted in
Alberta.
flag in sight?
referring to Huawei CFO Meng
Wanzhou and telling China that she
cannot be released because he is
upholding Canada’s rule of law.
However in the SNC-Lavalin affair,
he comes close to demanding that the
attorney general overrule the prosecution
service to negotiate a “remediation
agreement”, a new piece of legislation
with SNC so they can avoid a criminal
prosecution.
It seems that when it suits his purpose
the strict rule of law is not so
important.
Now here is where the PM’s hypocrisy
comes in. He seems to go to
extreme lengths to protect jobs in
Quebec but not so much in Alberta.
In this province there have likely
been over 40,000 real jobs lost because
of his cancellation of two pipelines and
his inaction on the Trans Mountain
pipeline.
3” wide version
“In it for the right reasons”:
Horner talks platform development
Advertorial
Drumheller-Stettler Constituency
United Conservative Party (UCP) candidate,
Nate Horner, is no stranger to
the East Central region.
He works as a cattle rancher near
Pollockville, Ab. raising two children
with his wife, Jennifer.
He has passion for both people and
problem solving which was more evident
as the UCP amalgamation became
a reality after the NDP gained power.
Horner attended constituency meetings
for both the Wildrose and PC’s in
an effort to begin the amalgamation
process in the area but to no avail.
As Jason Kenney, UCP’s current
leader, entered the spotlight with his
plan for Alberta, Horner became further
invested as he agreed with what
was being proposed.
He began by sitting as a director on
the inaugural UCP board for
Drumheller-Stettler.
“For me the worry was when I witnessed
a lot of friends leave the
province due to the downturn, in rural
areas I think the problem is magnified.
It’s troubling,” began Horner.
Policy, over regulation and noncompetitive
tax environment is what
the UCP believes is the root of the issue
when it comes to the oil and gas sector’s
continuous economic struggle.
Horner is excited about the platform
the party is slowly introducing.
So far, if elected, the party plans to
repeal the Carbon Tax and Bill 6, end
subsidies for wind and solar, ban
floor crossing, engage voter recall,
give free votes for MLAs, decentralizing
some important resources, and
review and refrain from cutting
frontline services in departments like
Should have a ‘big’ say
Cont’d from Pg 6
Almost 70 per cent of the seats in the
House of Commons is decided by
Canadians living east of Manitoba.
4.) Unite with “all” Albertans – at
least once. Wouldn’t you agree that a
Quebec conservative, liberal, new democrat,
green (etc.) is very different than
an Albertan version of any one of
those?
But there is one thing on which all
Albertans can agree. Albertans should
have a big “say” about what goes on in
their lives without others – who live far
away – dictating to them.
One sure way to unite is to agree to
vote “NO” in the next federal election.
Remember the “rejected” ballots are
counted. That’s
why the election
results never add
up to 100 per cent.
What if a
majority (over 50
per cent), voted
“no”? Those
“rejected ballot”
results could no
longer be ignored.
It would be a
resounding vote
of “non-confidence”,
by
Albertans, as to
how Canada is
governed.
Our Alberta
premier could
then use those
results to negotiate
more
aggressively on
behalf of all
Albertans.
5.) Just be
Albertan. Talk
health and education.”
We are going to hold spending but we
are going to unhobble and grow the
economy. We are going to cut the regulatory
burden substantially,” said
Horner.
“We are going to cut red tape. Jason
said that the goal is we are going to cut
a third of the regulations in Alberta in
four years. It’s not unachievable.”
One of the newest initiatives is the
Job Creation Tax Cut which is meant
to make Alberta one of the most competitive
jurisdictions in North
America; an attractive, desirable place
to start a business and subsequently
create jobs.
Kenney felt this initiative would
encourage nationally based businesses
and make Alberta the number one destination
for growth while competing
against the United States.
The in-depth plan for alleviating
rural crime is expected to be released
soon but for the time being Horner
shared, “It’s going to involve better
funding in certain aspects of the judicial
system. Most of these cases involve
repeat offenders and are drug related.
Rural crime is the symptom, a brutal
economy is the disease.”
The party hopes to re-allocate funds
for the Rural Crime Plan to combat
this issue as well.
When asked about his family’s historical
political involvement, Horner
said “I should know enough to stay out
of it but, I feel compelled to try and
help, compelled to serve. It feels so
important right now. It’s about Alberta
and our kids.”
If you would like to donate to Nate
Horner’s campaign or learn more visit
www.natehornerucp.ca.
about some Albertan things. Take that
delightfully dreadful drive (I have) to
Ft. McMurray. And see (and smell),
first-hand, how Alberta resources are
being mined.
Eat good Albertan food. Listen to
some good Albertan music. And,
maybe make your own version of
“Albertan” whatever.
And again, these are “our” suggestions,
do what you will. And if you
want, look us up. We enjoy connecting
with people from anywhere in the
world (especially Alberta).
Alberta Advantage Party visits Drumheller-Stettler riding
Terri Huxley
ECA Review
Not to be confused
with the Alberta
Party, the Alberta
Advantage Party
(AAP) has made their
first appearance in the
Drumheller-Stettler
Riding.
Since the amalgamation
of the Wildrose
Party and PC Party 22
months ago, the AAP Burns
was born and has been
attempting to gain traction
across the province ever since.
Marilyn Burns, the leader of
the party along with supporters
occupied the Stettler Canalta
Hotel on Tues. Feb. 26 to get the
word out about their platform
and their mission.
“The reason for our
existence is that we
want to elect MLAs
that will advance the
policies and principles
and constitution of our
party,” began Burns.
“Secondly, we want to
advance a compassionate
and self-reliant
society and thirdly
promote individual
freedom for all citizens. We
want to have a prudent, effective,
accountable and
trustworthy government.”
Music Festival
adjudicators
Burns is an Edmonton based
lawyer and mother of four with
a background in rural Alberta.
She was a co-founder of the
Wildrose Party in 2008.
The party’s commitment to
Albertans starts with an issue
by issue take on the traditional
system and supports member
driven decisions.
Their platform includes topics
like government integrity, education,
agriculture and
equalization.
In order to become a member,
they must agree to these principles
and objective.
Any five members can bring a
policy revision forward which
can be voted on by all members
at their Annual General
Meeting.
Approximately 50 members
gathered after the UCP
amalgamation to create the
AAP to reflect their own
ideals as they felt the merge
was not well-intentioned.
“We recognized that this
was a merge based on
deception and deceit and
dishonesty.
“We did not want to go
that direction so we got
together and agreed that if
the merge vote happened,
then we would start a new
party,” said Burns.
The AAP has been identified
by others as centre
right and populist along the
political spectrum.
“I don’t
consider ourselves to be on
that spectrum because we
take issue by issue. I think
other people might consider
us centre right and populist,”
said Burns. “Populist
simply means we listen to
the people. I don’t like that
left-right paradigm. I think
you need to look at things
issue by issue. We are here
for the people of Alberta.
Alberta is our priority.”
The party is seeking a
nominee in the Drumheller-
Stettler Constituency but
they do have a constituency
association board up and
running.
Around the province,
seven candidates have been
approved to run under the
AAP.
What a game played by the
Hughenden Jets and the Wainwright
Bisons!
On Wed. Feb. 27, 2019, our own
Hughenden/Hardisty Midget Jets
travelled to Wainwright to begin a
best-of-three playoff series.
The Jets boys played excellent
during the first period, scoring three
goals. Sasha Robitaille (#8), scored the
first two and Ashton Johannesson
(#18) scored the third.
The team most definitely celebrated
a great deal before the next period but
during the second period, they let
their guard down, letting Wainwright
score a few goals.
During the third period, the Jets got
back into the game when Ethan
Dambrowski (#7) scored one more
goal.
Overall the boys put up a good fight
against Wainwright but they still lost 4
- 5 in the last seven minutes of the
third period.
“Well, we just didn’t show up
tonight, but it’s time to forget about it
and beat Wainwright on Saturday,”
said Ethan Holte, when asked about
his thoughts on their game that
evening.
Hockey mom Becky Small had similar
thoughts. “Our boys played well.
They’ve played Wainwright seven
games so far this year and lost only
two, so I think they will bring their
A-game on Saturday and bring home
the win.”
Game two and three will have
occurred over the weekend.
The Jets will play their last provincial
series against Killam on March 7.
Theresetta Junior Girls win the gold
The Junior Girls team
hosted their home basketball
tournament on Sat.
Feb. 23.
Teams from William E.
Hay, Gus Wetter and
Sedgewick came out for
the competition.
It was a fast paced tournament
as the teams all
had to win their first game
in order to move onto the
final.
The Knights had a good
first game against
Sedgewick. The girls
played hard and were able
to win by a handful of baskets,
which allowed them
to advance to the final
against Gus Wetter, who
also won their first game
against William E. Hay.
The final game was a
nail biter!
Parents commented that
it was hard to watch such a
close game.
The score was tight for
the whole second half of
the game as the two teams
took turns scoring baskets
with the Knights ultimately
winning the game.
We believe in breeding, developing, and testing our genetics in ways that will
add more value to our customers’ programs and to the industry.
The Junior High
classes, accompanied by
many parents, travelled to
Canmore on Sun. Feb. 24
for their annual ski trip in
the mountains.
The group travelled by
charter bus and enjoyed
some game of Uno and
Crib to pass the time
before arriving at their
hotel for some water
sliding and a good night’s
sleep before the first full
day of skiing.
The group skied for two
days, both days at Lake
Louise Ski Resort where
they reported good conditions
even though the
mornings were a little
chilly.
After their second full
day of skiing, the tired
group loaded up the bus
around 4 p.m. for the trek
home.
After a stop for supper, the
group arrived back in
also went on a ski
The group headed
The group arrived
nice and early to
others spent a bit of
Role modeling for youth, important aspect of games
Cont’d from Pg 1
Goalie Bella McKee of Irma, Ab. and
Payton Laumbach of Wainwright, Ab.
were on the first place team which acts
as an Under 18 (U18) team. Their
youngest player was 15-years-old.
Although they made it look easy, the
team was an underdog coming in to
the final.
“It was an amazing experience,”
began McKee. “We had a little bit of a
rough go in round robin and only won
one game but then once we hit quarter
finals we had to win the next three
games if we wanted to win the gold
medal and that’s exactly what we did.”
All players that made it onto the provincial
team went through a rigorous
combination of camps and shortlisting
before making it onto the team.
First, the top 80 athletes in the province
attend their first camp,
afterwards this selection is narrowed
down to 47. From there, another camp
takes place in the summer which
determines the top 29. Then coaches
and other team members choose the
final team they want on their roster.
Both McKee and Laumbach attend
the Kitscoty High School as they
attend the well-known hockey but for
McKee it was a true pleasure to represent
her small village as well as the
academy.
“That was a huge honour. I mean
Irma is where I grew up so it’s a small
town where everybody knows each
other so I took a lot of pride in that and
also to be able to represent Kitscoty
High School. That meant a lot to me.
They have been a home for me over the
past three years. They mean a lot so to
be able to represent them on a national
scale was pretty special,” said McKee.
The female hockey teams were part
of a week two schedule meaning they
were not apart of the opening ceremonies
but they did attend the closing
ceremonies.
“Honestly, we were a pretty tired
group,” laughed McKee. “We were
kind of coming off of our high [of winning]
a little bit for the first and I’d say
we were ready to get out of there honestly.
It had been a long 11 days so it
was a long haul but it was so cool like
there were a lot of athletes, a lot of fans
packed into the centrium so it was a
pretty cool experience.”
An outpouring of support was felt
from both Red Deer and Kitscoty for
the team.
“You’d be surprised how many
people watch and how many people are
cheering you on – how many people
you are actually representing and are
proud of you,” said McKee.
McKee has found role modeling for
youth to be an important aspect of her
participation at the games.
She used to coach a few teams in
Lloydminster which has pushed her to
continue performing her best.
“I mean to be able to see all the
young hockey players, especially the
young female hockey players that are
there supporting us and all the signs.
We are acting as their heros even
though they don’t know us on a personal
level or anything like that.
“They want to play for Team
Alberta some day and we as a team
and as a whole we represent ourselves
in a very appropriate, mature manner
to be a role model.”
The male hockey team placed third,
crushing Saskatchewan after a 12 – 0
point game.
Among the players was 16-year-old
Drew Sim of Tees, Ab. who acted as
goalie for his team.
“It was good,” began Sim. “It was a
good group to hang around with and
we ended up playing pretty good.”
A few different tactics were
employed to make sure the newly
formed team was game ready.
“We stretched the team a lot every
day before games and watched a lot of
video and we spent a lot of time
Second annual ‘spin-a-thon’ held
by Cheyanne Ford and
Anneka Van Hoek
The second annual ‘spina-thon’
to raise money for
Juvenile Diabetes took place
at Hughenden Public School
(HPS) was held on Fri. Feb.
22.
Students and staff participants,
on 19 teams, giving it
their all for five minutes at a
time.
CFB Wainwright loaned
12 stationary bikes for these
teams to use. The point of
the activity was to raise
awareness and money for
Jammed packed
by K. Smawley
The month of February
had flown by! Between five
snow days, multiple indoor
recesses, two ski trips,
Valentines Day, Hundredth
Day and many other fun
activities, the short month
was about as jammed packed
as it could be.
On Thurs. Feb. 21, the Jr.
ATB crew helped 21 customers
deposits their funds.
There were seven students
who were working as the
bank staff and they did a
great job providing quick
and friendly service.
The winners of the
monthly draws were
Temperance Pockett, Wesley
Pocket and Murry Bicknell.
The Grade 3/4 class were
super lucky on Fri. Feb. 22,
as they had visitors to their
classroom for a special presentation
about Tunisia, a
country they have been
studying as part of their
social studies curriculum.
Melissa Nichols and her
husband Marouan Chaibi,
who is originally from
Tunisia, brought in original
artifacts, beautiful clothing
they wore in the country, an
Juvenile Diabetes research.
The HPS Students’ Union
and principal, Ryan Duffett
arranged the event.
Every member of the
Students’ Union worked
very hard towards organizing
the event.
“I contributed to the
assembly of the spin-a-thon
by making sponsor posters
and supplying water”, said
Grade 10 representative
Tasia Goodwin.
Students were looking forward
to the spin-a-thon for
many reasons.
ThereseTTa School
informative slideshow, and
some delicious Tunisian
desserts.
The students enjoyed
trying on the clothing and
sampling the sweets. The
generous guests even presented
the students with
gifts at the end of the
presentation.
Pink Shirt Day
Pink Shirt Day was on
Wed. Feb. 27. This is antibullying
initiative started
years ago by two high school
boys from Nova Scotia who
encouraged all their classmates
to wear a pink shirt in
support of a Grade 9 boy who
was being bullied by some
other students for the exact
same wardrobe choice.
As Theresetta donned
their best and brightest pink
tones, the school talked a lot
about being kind, including
everyone, and thinking
“pro-kindness”!
Standing up to bullies is
everyone’s responsibility
and the more voices that
send the message of celebrating
people’s differences,
the harder it is to ignore.
Stettler Regional Fire Department volunteers had an inventive
night of training on Mon. Mar. 4 as they focused on teamwork.
A small crew of firefighters were required to navigate an obstacle
course with their masks blacked out while carrying a rubber duck
in a small tub of water which was precariously balanced on the
top of a blackboard. They were guided by radio from another
team member. The floor had a few spills throughout the exercise.
“I am participating in the
spin-a-thon because I am
eager to help raise money
towards a cure for Juvenile
Diabetes”, said Grade 10 student
Jamie Van Hoek.
The Students’ Union had
set a goal to raise $1500 and
they exceeded that goal!
The final tally was well
over $2,000.
For two years now, HPS
has joined the cause.
HPS decided to dedicate
this day to raising money
for the Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation
(JDRF) because two years
ago, a family of four and one
other person were sadly
taken from us too soon.
The family of four were
Michelle, Tim, Niki and
Shawn Carson who collided
with Riley Spears; all five
lost their lives that night.
Our friend Niki Carson
suffered from Juvenile
Diabetes and we all learned
