What do you think is the biggest
issue facing your coverage area
and how do you plan to approach
it to improve your constituents’
quality of life? An important priority
for me as a board member is
the need to assure that New Trier
is preparing our students to be contributing
members of society in the
21st century. A significant portion
of that preparation involves making
sure that New Trier’s curriculum
grows and adapts to meet the academic
needs of students who will be
competing in a global economy that
is vastly different than the one most
of us experienced upon graduation.
In addition to supporting the District’s
on-going efforts to address
students’ evolving curricular needs,
I would also encourage the District
to continue the development of extracurricular
opportunities so that
students can establish meaningful
connections to future careers. Lastly,
I would champion the District’s
laudable endeavors to support the
social and emotional needs of all
of our students. By addressing the
needs of the whole child, New Trier
can strive to make each student feel
connected to New Trier despite its
size.
What makes you the best/a top
candidate for this position? My
eight years of experience serving as
a member of the Glencoe Board of
Education will allow me to hit the
ground running. While the issues
facing a high school are different
than those faced by elementary districts,
the essential role of a board
member is the same. First and foremost,
a successful board establishes
the mission of the district and ensures
that the efforts of the educational
professionals are aligned with
that mission. Additionally, the board
is tasked with making sure that the
school has the financial resources
necessary to accomplish that mission.
Finally, a board member serves
as a sounding board for the administration
and a liaison for community
members. In addition to my board
experience, my legal background allows
me to analyze issues critically
and weigh various perspectives in
an impartial and rational manner.
More specifically, my background
as an employee benefits attorney
helps me appreciate the complicated
issues associated with the District’s
largest expenditures — compensation
and benefits. Lastly, as a parent
of current (and soon-to-be current)
New Trier students and a visible
member of the community, I am
able to provide valuable feedback to
administrators about the concerns of
the community. Likewise, I am able
to assist parents as they navigate the
complexities of New Trier.

an undergraduate degree
in Elementary Education
from Indiana University
and a Master’s of Science

from Hunter College
in New York City. I taught
self-contained special
education classrooms in
Manhattan, developed a
private school’s curriculum
based on state standards,
facilitated a Central
States Accreditation process,
worked as a learning
specialist, fulfilled Wilson
language training and specialized
in Orton-Gillingham
reading instruction.
