THE UPPER
Having ticked off the popular Lower Mississippi, you can head north to discover the river’s
upper reaches. Here are some of your options:
ELEVEN-DAY CRUISES FROM
NEW ORLEANS TO ST LOUIS
These follow the itinerary on page 35 in
reverse to Memphis, where there is a day to
see the sights, then continue north, visiting
New Madrid in Missouri and Paducah in
Kentucky before a last day in St Louis. This
city’s location near the confluence of the
Mississippi and Ohio River made it a hub
for river boats and settlers heading west
back in the 1800s. A 630ft stainless steel
arch built in 1965 recognises its role as
Gateway to the West. A tram takes visitors
to the top for views over the city.
ONE-WEEK CRUISES FROM
ST LOUIS TO ST PAUL
Allow time in St Louis to see the Gateway
Arch (see above). Once sailing, the
highlight is a day in Hannibal, where
Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain,
spent his boyhood. There are shops and
restaurants named in his honour, while
tours of his home, now a museum, tell
the story of his life and bring characters
from his book to life. This cruise visits
Davenport and Dubuque in Iowa, where
museums about the Sauk and Meskwaki
Native Americans and the Mississippi river
are attractions. There are tours to a classic
car museum in La Crosse in Wisconsin and
an eagle centre in Red Wing Minnesota
before journey’s end in St Paul.
