SERVING SUNNYSIDE-WOODSIDE AND LONG ISLAND CITY
VOL. 77, NO. 25 WOODSIDE, L.I.C., N.Y. FRIDAY, JUNE 24, 2011 25 CENTS
KIDS RALLY IN
LONG ISLAND CITY
TO SAVE LIBRARY SERVICE, LIBRARY JOBS!
Queens Library CEO Thomas W.
Galante; students from PS 111, PS 112 and
Voice Charter School; and library lovers
from the community rallied outside Queens
Library at Long Island City last weekend in
support of funding that would save library
service and library jobs.
“The estimated $25.3 million in funding
cuts proposed by the Mayor’s administration
would be devastating to the public libraries
that provide our communities with a
wealth of services,” said CM Jimmy Van
Bramer. “Public libraries improve academic
performance in our schools, provide adult
literacy courses and inspire young people to
become lifelong readers. I applaud the efforts
of these young advocates and will
continue working with my colleagues to
protect our libraries.”
New York City’s Executive Budget calls
for a cut to Queens Library of $25.3 million
in FY ’12. It would mean reducing library
service to the lowest levels ever; lower than
the fiscal crises of the 1970s and 1990s or
even the Great Depression.
(continued on page 5)
Upcoming 7 Line
Service Diversion
There will be a service diversion affecting
the 7 line on the weekend of June 25-27 th .
This service diversion, along with one which
occurred on the May 21-23 weekend and
one which is scheduled for the July 30-
August 1 weekend, is necessary to address
critical infrastructure issues in the Steinway
Tunnel, which the 7 line uses to run between
Queens and Manhattan.
There have been significant problems in
providing an adequate level of service on
the 7 line in recent months due to these
issues. Repair work will be focused on
correcting the following problems that
have affected service reliability:
-Signal circuits in the tunnel requiring
repairs.
-Water intrusion in the tunnel.
-Electrical power system problems.
-Structural defects in the tunnel that
require repairs.
MTA New York City Transit began
emergency repair work in the Steinway Tun-
nel during the May 21-22 nd weekend. Two
of the six signal circuits most in need of
repair were completely rewired and are working
as designed. Over 1,000 track plates
have been installed and over 700 feet of
track cleaned using the Vac-tron train. Over
3,800 debris bags of muck and silt that was
in the tunnel due to water intrusion were
bagged and removed.
Significant work remains to be done
in the Steinway Tunnel to bring it to a
state of good repair. In order to carry out
the needed work:
There will be no 7 line subway service
between the Times Square-42nd
Street and Queensboro Plaza stations
from 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, June 25 th
to 5 a.m. on Monday, June 27 th . A
special ‘fare-free’ shuttle bus service
will operate between the Vernon-Jackson
and Queensboro Plaza stations while
the service diversion is in effect.
Announcement Of $2.9 Million
Grant To Serve NYC Schools
At Public School 112 in Long Island
City, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-
Queens, Manhattan) announced that City
Year New York has received a $2,921,000
AmeriCorps grant from the federal Corporation
for National and Community Service.
$552,000 of this award will fund City Year
corps members serving in Long Island City
schools. Queens Borough President Helen
Marshall, City Councilman Jimmy Van
Bramer, Susan Stern of the New York State
Commission on National & Community
Service, Itai Dinour of City Year New York,
P.S. 112 Principal Rafael Campos, City Year
Corps Members, and students joined
Maloney for the announcement.
This grant will support City Year New
York’s service programs, which place young
adults in under-resourced public schools to
serve full-time as tutors and mentors. From
the first bell until the last student leaves the
after-school program, City Year corps members
focus on improving student attendance
rates, behavior and course performance in
math and English - which research from
Johns Hopkins University confirms are indicators
of a student’s likelihood of graduating
from high school.
The current year’s AmeriCorps grant
cycle was highly competitive, due to the
strong and growing demand by organizations
seeking AmeriCorps resources. Organizations
requested nearly twice the number
of grant dollars and AmeriCorps positions
than could be funded.
Sunnyside Seams Like
Milan For An Afternoon
By Rob MacKay
Skirts, pajamas, quilts and dresses filled the Queens of Angels Church basement on
Sunday afternoon as Sunnyside girls modeled fashion styles of their own inspiration and
creation. Dubbed “Project Streetwear,” the exhibition featured everything from a turquoise-and-orange
printed cotton lawn halter dress to a hot pink chartreuse party dress with
a blocked-and-glittered leopard printed silver taffeta bodice. The show also marked the end
of various sewing classes that Skillman Avenue resident Bonita Kline had offered to
budding fashionistas over the past months.
$2.9 Million Grant To Serve NYC Schools
“With tough budgets in Washington, federal education grants are becoming tougher to
secure – which is why I’m so delighted that City Year will be getting $2.9 million to help
New York City students. What’s more, $552,000 of this funding will support schools in my
district in Long Island City,” said Congresswoman Maloney. “Citizen service is an
essential part of the solution to many of the problems facing our city, especially in difficult
economic times. Thanks to this grant, City Year corps members will be helping our children
learn and strengthening our community as they develop civic and leadership skills that will
last a lifetime. I congratulate City Year for receiving this grant and thank the outstanding
young people who have answered the call to service by joining AmeriCorps.”
Art Exhibit Open to the Public
by Peter A. Ross
On Saturday, June 4 th the Southeast Queens Drawing and Painting Atelier held its 6 th
Annual Student Art Exhibition at the Atelier located at 142-16 180 th Street in Locust Manor
Queens. The exhibit, which highlights the artwork of the school’s students created
throughout the year is open to the public from June 18 th through June 30 th .The Atelier,
defined as an artist’s or designer’s studio or workroom, specializes in instruction in
drawing, painting, sculpture and portfolio preparation for middle and high school students.
The Director, Mr. David R. Gayle, himself a professional artist, instructor and framer during
the opening ceremony highlighted the work of his various class groups separated into adult
artists, young artists and the special portfolio class. Many of the students both adult and
youth only started formal instruction this year and the quality of the works were very good
especially those of the adults. The hard work of the portfolio class students (middle school
students currently in 8 th grade) truly paid off as it was announced that all of the students made
one of their top high school choices with four of the students to matriculate at Art and Design
High School in Manhattan and the fifth to attend The Mary Lewis Academy in Jamaica
Estates. Mr. Gayle beamed as he announced this as these schools and their art programs are
very competitive to get into and in high demand.
Also in attendance were the Southern Queens Park Association Director of Operations
Peter Richards and SQPA Cornerstone Program Director Louise Mercado who presented
Certificates of Appreciation to all the students for participation in the 9 th annual SQPA art
exhibition “Colors in Black” which was held in February at Roy Wilkins Park. Mr. Richards
stated that the participation of the Atelier was greatly appreciated as they met the call for
needed artists and helped fill a major gap in the exhibition this year. It was also announced
that the Atelier will partnership with the SQPA to offer satellite classes at the Roy Wilkins
Recreation Center starting in August to help expose a larger audience to and encourage
participation in the arts, especially for older adults. The day was capped off by a beautiful
pot luck spread in the yard area off the studio’s rear entrance where students, friends and
guests enjoyed a beautiful spring day, lounging and eating and of course dipping inside to
view the fruits of their artistic labor. For more information on the Atelier and its programs,
including its intensive 2-week summer program for adolescents featuring an intensive
drawing program with introduction to museums, contact David Gayle at (917) 868-8022 or
(718) 528-6959 or by e-mail at dcgayle@verizon.net.
St. Raphael’s Receives
Visit From Dr. Nelson
By Sally Renda
On Friday, June 3, the students of Mrs.
Renda’s Pre-K and Nursery class enjoyed
a visit from Dr. Heidi Nelson and her
favorite puppet “Joe” and his co-partner
the Dinosaur. They also viewed two brief
videos about a visit to the dentist with
“Dudley the Dinosaur” and “Charlie
Brown.” The children passed around and
learned all about the instruments used in
the dentist’s office and some procedures
Dr. Nelson might use when she examines
their teeth. Puppet “Joe” was the patient
receiving all the dental care. He made
them aware of the importance of good oral
hygiene, proper nutrition and regular dental
checkups. The children learned that
their teeth are very important for good
health and nice appearance. This is Dr.
Nelson’s 10th year visiting St. Raphael
School. She enjoys the children as much as
they enjoy her. We thank Dr. Nelson for
her time, patience and loving manner with
the children.
by City Year corps members at
P.S. 204 have increased their attendance
rates from 77% last year
to 85% this year.
Queens Borough President
Helen Marshall said, “These dollars
are a wonderful resource and a
shot in the arm for students here in
Western Queens. We have already
seen the good results of what can
happen as a result of the services
these dollars provide. I thank Con-
THE WOODSIDE HERALD
gresswoman Carolyn Maloney,
AmeriCorps, and the New York
State Commission on National &
Community Service for securing
these much needed funds.”
Senator Michael Gianaris said,
“The receipt of millions of dollars
for an essential education initiative
like City Year is reason to
celebrate, particularly as we continue
to struggle with severe budget
cuts forced upon us by the
difficult economy. I thank Congresswoman
Maloney for bringing
us together for today’s announcement
so we can continue
instilling the importance of education
in our young people.”
Council Member Jimmy Van
Bramer said, “City Year New York
provides perhaps the single greatest
resource for public schools with
limited resources, mentors for students.
With this funding, City Year
will continue its amazing work that
focuses on improving student performance
in Math and English,
which increases the likelihood of
graduation. I applaud Congresswoman
Maloney for her efforts to
secure this funding, which will
strengthen our schools.”
Letters To
The Editor
The following letters are the opinions
of its author and not necessarily those
of the Woodside Herald.
Thanks To
Assemblywoman Nolan
For Supporting Solar
Dear Editor,
It seems like Albany has been
talking about clean energy and its
potential to create jobs for a very
long time. Fortunately, Assemblywoman
Catherine Nolan is doing
something about it, and we would
like to thank her for real leadership
on this issue.
Right now, the state Legislature
is examining a major initiative
to revitalize New York’s economy
by adding an impressive 5,000
megawatts of solar power capacity.
As a co-sponsor of the socalled
New York Solar Industry
Development and Jobs Act, Assemblywoman
Nolan is playing an
important role, helping blaze the
trail toward a greener, stronger NY.
The Solar Industry Development
and Jobs Act is not only good
for the environment it will help
reinvigorate New York’s economy
in a very real way.
This legislation will generate
$20 billion in economic activity
for the state and create at least
22,000 jobs. These jobs will be
diverse, ranging across a broad
spectrum of salary levels, skill and
education requirements and employment
fields. What’s more, they
will be local jobs, and difficult to
outsource, meaning they will truly
benefit New Yorkers.
Right now, New Jersey, where
a similar program is already in
place, has six times the solar capacity
that we do. Clean energy has
become a major industry in New
Jersey, and its rapidly growing solar
industry companies say that this
type of program has been critical to
their success. It’s time to bring
those jobs and benefits to New
York. This bill is currently moving
through the Assembly’s Ways and
Means Committee with the support
of Assemblywoman Nolan,
and it fits perfectly in with Gov.
Andrew Cuomo’s vision to make
New York a clean-energy leader.
All those years of talk about
the innovation economy come
down to this moment Albany must
act today for a better, more prosperous
tomorrow.
Raccoons In Sunnyside
Dear Editor,
A family of raccoons has established
a home in Sunnyside,
Queens, at 39th street and/or between
the Midtown Expressway.
Rachel, Raquel, Ricky and Roe
have been munching on wild berries
and taking nocturnal romps in
the backyards of our homes. They
enter the neighborhood through the
private common driveways and disappear
during the days in the underbrush
and trees. Perhaps they
have some unknown hideaway?
So far, no damages have been reported.
No pets or children have
been harmed. However, neighbors,
be advised… these four legged
mammals are undomesticated and
dangerous! They have Sharpe teeth,
and razor Sharpe claws. They also
have been known to be rabid!
Respectfully submitted
by a cautiously optimistic
Condolences To The
Huges Family
Dear Editor,
Our deepest sympathy to the
family of Margaret (Margie)
Hughes. We were very sad to read
of her passing, on March 17th, in
the Woodside Herald. Our family
knew Margie and her family when
she worked in the A&P on 61st
street and Woodside Ave. in the
50’s and 60’s. Her son Jerry often
stopped in the Woodside Steak
House to sing a few songs with my
brother Joe (Flat-top) Fink. Again
our deepest sympathy to the family.
Summer Concerts In
Windmuller Park
Dear Editor,
The people have save the concerts
in the park. Power to the
people. Woodside On The Move
has sponsored summer concerts in
Windmuller Park for 40 years. I
remember my daughter Alison and
other toddlers in the ‘70’s dancing
spiritedly to the rock music (my
grown daughter now has 4 kids of
her own).
Woodsiders still enjoy the concerts,
the most popular involving
audience participation, such as
Lindying to swing music, swaying
to Do-Wop, Rock and more recently
Slasa and Caribe rhythms.
Nowadays, the dancing toddlers
number Latinos and Tibetan kids.
The most popular concerts of
all were the Irish concerts, which
attracted over 2,000 attendees.
Remember those beautiful Irish
baby boys.
From the beginning, the concerts
have been financed by our
elected politicians with money
from constituent services. Recently,
however, city and state austerity
has squeezed that money
source. I don’t know how WOTM
Exec. Director Rosa Reyes found
money for the concerts last year.
We enjoyed only six concerts.
The prognosis for this year was
bleak. No money. Period. No concerts.
So we did a fundraiser locally,
raising over $5,000 for 5
concerts. If some unresponsive
management companies came
through, we may finance one or
two more.
Special thanks to the boards
and shareholders of Berkeley Towers
II and III who were particularly
generous during this financially
depressing time.
Next year, we want to raise
enough to sponsor 8 concerts. It is
up to the people. Power to the
People.
Al Volpe, Woodside
Vice-Chair WOTM
Catholic Churches
Dear Editor,
It has come to my attention that
one parish in our community is a
“members only, word of mouth”
establishment. I am sorry to say
that St. Teresa’s Parish is not open
or forth coming about events.
A friend of mine told me that
on Saturday, June 11 th , there is a
fair at St. Teresa’s. I looked in that
weeks Woodside Herald to check
about upcoming fairs. I notice
Queen of Angels, St. Raphael’s
and All Saints Church all have
advertisements. Why not St.
Teresa’s? I notice you photograph
them (i.e., St. Teresa’s) after the
events, quite well. What good is
that? Catholic churches are the
home of everyone. In fact, the Pastor
Msgr. Herran once said ‘when
you mention Catholics, you are
opening the door to everyone.’
But I pose this question… Don’t
actions speak loader than words?
Don’t misunderstand; St.
Teresa’s does a lot of good. They
host United 40’s and AA meet-
REAL ESTATE FACTS
by RITA LOWRY
WELCOME HOME
REAL ESTATE
PROCEED WITH CAUTION
Many sellers are tempted to list For Sale By Owner (FSBO) because
they feel home prices are down and they don’t want to lose one more
penny to paying a commission. But with fewer than ten percent of all
home sales falling into the FSBO category, it’s a challenging strategy.
In personal terms, you’ll have to safeguard yourself against prospects
who have not been screened and qualified by a professional. When
someone calls to request a showing, note their caller ID and keep a log of
visitors. Stash away prescription medications and valuables before showings,
and afterwards check that all your windows and doors are locked.
There are also legal considerations for your listing and hopefully,
your eventual sales contract. Be sure your listing complies with the Fair
Housing Act, which prohibits discrimination against buyers. If you’re
unfamiliar with escrow and title insurance, hire a real estate attorney to
draft, review and record all documents.
This economy makes securing a loan difficult, so it’s wise to require
a loan pre-approval letter from buyers before accepting any offers. If you
really want to get attention, sweeten the pot by offering a two or three
percent commission to any agent who brings buyers to you. FSBO is not
the easiest route, and many impatient and frustrated sellers end up hiring
an agent to make the sale happen.
