work on this showcase for
the last two years,” Shallow
said. “This is a wonderful
community event. It
brings together the chamber
and all the businesses in
the community, along with
the residents. It’s a way that
businesses can be involved
in the chamber using this
event to show their business,
along with meeting
other businesses who are
participating.”
The event also showcased
artwork chosen for the
Frankfort Fall Fest. Artwork
was submitted by students
from the Lincoln-Way high
schools. This year, for the
first time, there was more
than one winner. Melanie
Piunti, of New Lenox, won
Leonard
From Page 8
it is too early to predict
what this will entail, it is
important that we take all
factors into consideration
as we move towards what
is best for our district and
our community. Some of
these factors include, fiscal
responsibility, community
concerns, economic impacts,
educational benefits
and many more. Too often,
major decisions are made
in our community without
considering the multitude
of factors that are involved.
2. Negativity — We
District 161 Board of
Education and what would
you do to solve them?
The main issue facing
Summit Hill District 161
are the flatlined test scores
compared to Frankfort 157-
C district. Over the past
Chairman’s Choice; Courtney
Kurtz, of New Lenox,
won popular vote; and the
Frankfort Fall Fest poster
winner was Chloe Murray,
of Frankfort.
“This is the first year
we’ve had the unveiling of
the posters at the Community
Showcase,” Schaibley
said.
Attendees were drawn to
the music coming from the
Lincoln-Way Youth Strings
booth, where Frankfort
resident Vicky Nyder was
volunteering. An alumna of
Lincoln-Way North, Nyder
returned to the showcase to
share her love for music.
“We’re always invited
to play here,” she said. “I
volunteer because it’s great
experience, and I love being
in the community. I’m
a people person and letting
have too many people that
complain about problems
and attack new initiatives
in order to further political
agendas or carry out personal
vendettas. It is easy
to point to a problem and
assign blame, but that is not
what our district needs. We
need people that want to do
the hard work necessary
to find solutions and pathways
for improvement. We
need people that are motivated
by a desire to provide
the safest environment,
most fiscally sound budget
and strongest education
possible for our children. I
am proud of our district and
I am excited to continue to
the kids try the instruments
at the booth is the highlight
of my day. Some schools
don’t have orchestras. They
have have choirs and no
strings.
Nyder plays four instruments:
violin, viola, cello
and bass, and her goal is to
teach children how to play
stringed instruments.
“This is a life of a music
educator,” she said, laughing.
“ ... Music is everything
to me. If I’m not in the
practice room, I’m working
on stuff in my head. It’s all
around me. Parents want
their kids in music, and
that’s what I’m doing here
today. I have kids already
coming up to me today saying
because of me showing
them an instrument in the
past when I was here, they
are playing today.”
work to make it even better.
3. The Unknown —
Through my experience in
education, I have learned
that it is almost impossible
to predict the myriad
of changes and issues that
arise with each new school
year. Many of the changes
come from the state or even
the federal level, and we
have no control over them.
Thus, it is imperative that
we have experienced, solution-focused
people at every
level of our district. Our
ability to adapt and stay
ahead of the curve is what
will allow us to continue on
our path of excellence.
four years, the PARCC
scores for district 157-C
have improved for both
language arts and math but
Summit Hill have flatlined.
My recommendation to improve
scores begins with
the board working with the
superintendent to set ambitious,
measurable goals and
to evaluate the progression
of the goals regularly. The
superintendent’s performance
must be evaluated
based on the progress of
the goals and improvement
of scores. We must have a
more rigorous curriculum
with an abundance of support
for the teachers and
the students. The program
must be inclusive of everyone
and not only focus on
the students in the accelerated
programs.
