Shakespeare’s iconic play to get new spin
Submitted by Pepperdine
University
Pepperdine University’s Fine
Arts Division will present “The
Taming of the Shrew” at 7:30
p.m. Wednesday-Friday, April
3-5, and at 2 p.m. Saturday, April
6 at the Malibu campus Smothers
Theatre.
Pepperdine’s Fine Arts Division’s
production of “The Taming
of the Shrew” promises to be anything
but tame. In this unbridled
new spin on Shakespeare’s comedic
battle of the sexes, themes
of cross-dressing, gender roles,
love, power, relationships, and
companionship are explored and
raucous heights are reached when
the shrew is truly put on the other
foot. Scott Alan Smith directs
Andrew Borba’s celebrated version
that thrilled audiences at the
famed Chautauqua Theatre Company.
Smith directs the cast, which
features Pepperdine students
Lauren Drake, Sara Eakman,
Marcela Ferrarone, Dylan Forehand,
Christine Galyean, Lauren
Jennerjohn, Isabel Klein, Gabi
Meacham, Brooke Moltrum, Julia
Pankow, Chase Perry, George
Preston, Evatt Salinger, Katy
Semple, Eliahs Sumpter, and Indy
Wilson.
“Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming
of the Shrew’ is set up to continue
a debate — what exactly
is the nature of our relationships
with each other? To say that our
current times have us engaged
in a very frank discussion of
gender roles would be an understatement,
but this discussion is
hardly new. Shakespeare dealt
with these very issues in his day
An evening of wondrous illusions awaits Malibu residents
Submitted by Pepperdine
University
World class illusionist Vitaly
brings his signature brand of
magic to Pepperdine University’s
Smothers Theatre in Malibu
on April 12 at the Lisa Smith
Wengler Center for the Arts.
Combining breathtaking visuals
with Vitaly’s captivating
style, “An Evening of Wonders”
is an interactive theatrical experience
for adults and kids of
all ages that takes the audience
on a magical journey. Along the
way, Vitaly blends art and illusion
to illustrate the story of his
transformation from a boy with a
dream to a man with a vision—
the vision of a world where the
rules of reality do not exist.
In this world paintings spring
to life, photographs become
mini-movies, and audience
members see their faces vanish
from their own driver’s licenses.
Even time itself reverses as bare
broken branches visibly repair
and renew themselves with the
green leaves of spring.
Featuring some of the most
original illusions ever witnessed—
many of which touch
on tender topics such as love,
Vitaly, seen performing a trick with apples, comes to town April 12.
