On a trip to Mexico after opening his 

first couple of restaurants, chef and proprietor 

Scott Harris met a wonderful old 

Agave farmer with a dedicated pet donkey. 

This man’s steadfast donkey had 

worked alongside him in the Agave fields 

for more than 20 years. While most would 

disregard their work animal, the old farmer 

treated Fat Rosie as part of the family. 

They had a rare and inseparable bond 

that had formed through the many years 

of hard work, sweat, and tears. Harris admired 

the love and care that this old man 

had for his trusted donkey. He admired it 

so much in fact, that one night after many 

shots of tequila he promised the old farmer 

he would one day open a tequila bar 

and name it after the beloved donkey, Fat 

Rosie.

Evilena’s Red Dresser grateful for 4th win as Best Consignment Shop 

“Community and gratitude 

are everything,” said 

Janice Sabey, owner of 

Evilena’s Red Dresser. 

“We wouldn’t have a store 

without the community. 

“We’re so grateful for 

our customers and consignors,” 

she added. 

Evilena’s has been the 

Southwest Choice Award 

winner for Best Consignment 

Shop in 2016, 2017, 

2018 and 2019. 

Evilena’s will celebrate 

a decade in business this 

summer with multiple expansions 

over the years. 

“Our latest expansion 

came last year when we 

took over the Starbucks 

space,” Sabey said. “We 

have been able to accept 

more furniture and home 

décor, giving buyers more 

options.” 

Consignment stores give 

consumers a unique shopping 

experience because 

the inventory is constantly 

changing. Evilena’s accepts 

consignments on a 

walk-in basis. This means 

that consignors can bring 

in their items when it’s 

convenient for them. On 

any given day, Evilena’s 

can see between 30-60 

consignors per day. 

“When we first opened 

the store, we accepted consignors 

by appointment 

only and we thought we 

were over booking if we 

had eight on our calendar 

for the day,” Sabey said. 

“We would schedule them 

an hour apart.” 

Sabey found that method 

to be limiting. 

“We were actually booking 

our consignors up to 

six weeks out,” she said. 

“Basically we were telling 

people to not come to our 

store for six weeks.” 

Today, Evilena’s allows 

consignors to bring in up 

to 15 items of women’s 

apparel and home décor 

per day. This allows the 

store to serve each consignor 

within 15-20 minutes. 

They are encouraged 

to shop while their items 

are being processed. Large 

furniture still requires preapproval 

and an appointment.

mix of consigned items, 

there is a variety of handmade

event space,” Sabey said. 

“By expanding last year, 

we were able to create a 

classroom and we use it 

weekly.”

Stencil Sign Painting on 

March 21 and a Cabinet

Local attorney advises call before buying or selling real estate 

There are many things to 

consider when deciding to 

buy or sell real estate. Most 

importantly is whether to 

hire a real estate agent to 

assist them. If people are 

selling, they can list their 

property, or sell the property 

themselves without the 

help of a real estate professional, 

(often referred to 

as “FSBO.”) If people are 

buying real estate, they 

must decide whether to 

utilize a real estate agent to 

find properties and arrange 

for showings, or they may 

conduct internet searches 

on their own. In any event, 

every property transaction 

is unique, so it is important 

for anyone in the process of 

buying or selling real estate 

market to decide before they 

even get started, on how to 

proceed. 

An attorney can assist 

people when making this 

decision by pointing out 

the pros and cons of each 

approach. People may find 

they are able to save tens 

of thousands of dollars in 

expenses, including real estate 

commissions, and other 

closing costs, in the short 

run, when deciding to sell 

by owner, however, they 

may also find that the effort 

and unknown jeopardy in 

handling things themselves 

may not be worth saving the 

dollars in the long run. 

If people do decide to utilize 

a real estate agent for 

selling their property, there 

are legal contracts and disclosures 

to be signed when 

hiring a real estate agent. 

They must first evaluate 

their proposed agreement 

for listing the property for 

sale, including agreements 

allowing dual agency [and 

potential conflicts of interests,] 

the duration of the 

listing, and the marketing, 

disclosures, and other terms 

of the listing agreement. 

The rights and responsibilities 

of the real estate agent 

and the homeowner are important 

and consequential 

and are best explained by 

a licensed attorney. With 

the assistance of an experienced 

legal professional, 

people will possess the 

tools to make a proper decision 

as an informed client. 

If someone is interested in 

purchasing real estate, keep 

in mind that some real estate 

agents ask for people to sign 

an exclusive agreement as 

well before they begin the 

home search process. These 

agreements can hold several 

obligations and duties 

that should be understood 

by the persons signing the 

agreement so they can again 

make an informed decision. 

Additionally, if people 

need to engage a mortgage 

broker or lender as a buyer 

of property, there are legal 

contracts and disclosures 

to be signed before the process 

begins. Many of these 

are important governmental 

and regulatory documents, 

and people may need to 

understand the legal ramifications 

of the proposed 

agreements including, interest 

rate locks, costs and expenses 

as well as important 

timelines. The rights and 

responsibilities of the lender 

and the homeowner are important 

and consequential, 

and are best explained by a 

licensed attorney.

initial process of buying or

The honorees feasted on a variety of hors d’oeuvres 

including fresh vegetable crudites with ranch dip, cheese 

board, seared sesame tuna, grilled steak crostini, beef 

empanada with chipotle aioli, a pear, Brie and toasted almond 

filo purse, mini crab cakes with remoulade sauce, 

assorted mini quiche, pulled pork sliders, cucumber 

finger sandwiches, shrimp cocktail shooters, avocado 

deviled eggs, spinach-ricotta stuffed mushrooms, tomato 

and mozzarella caprese skewer, prosciutto-wrapped 

asparagus with Boursin cheese and balsamic glaze, and 

chicken pot stickers with soy dipping sauce. 

The winner of the $500 BMO Harris Bank Mastercard 

gift card was also announced at the event. Kendall 

Lipine, of New Lenox, was selected as the winner. 

Entertainment was provided by The Actors Gymnasium 

and included a costumed table lady carrying appetizers 

(pictured below) and magician. 

The award winners received a Southwest Choice 

Awards plaque with their business name engraved on it, 

window cling and a photo from the ceremony of each 

business owner or representative.

Girl in the Park does things local 

with their concept stemming from their 

name, Girl in the Park. Their “Girl” is 

cofounder and head chef Jayme Parker. 

The “Park” represents their location 

in Orland Park. As an alumna of 

Sandburg High School and culinary 

graduate of Robert Morris University, 

Parker and her family’s goal is to combine 

the love of her roots and her time
