On Dec. 20, 1997, Jim<br />

Murphy walked into his<br />

CEO’s office and resigned<br />

from his executive position<br />

in the consumer electronics<br />

industry to pursue<br />

a career in real estate.<br />

After six months of preparation,<br />

Murphy launched<br />

Group. Although the road<br />

was rough early on, the<br />

experience was invaluable,<br />

Murphy said.<br />

“Going straight into<br />

ownership with a staff and<br />

no previous real estate experience<br />

probably is not<br />

the most prudent way to<br />

enter our business,” he<br />

said. “We would go several<br />

days, even weeks, without<br />

a phone call. But I’ve<br />

always found the best way<br />

to identify who you really<br />

are, and your true character<br />

is during your toughest<br />

moments.”<br />

the highs and lows of the<br />

real estate business during<br />

the last 21 years, including<br />

the tremendous real<br />

estate boom starting in<br />

2002-2006 to the incredible<br />

market collapse from<br />

2007-2011.<br />

quality people is our most<br />

valuable asset,” Murphy<br />

business, but Murphy<br />

said “the bottom line is<br />

models will fail due to<br />

being hollow,” he said.<br />

“In other words, they are<br />

absent when critical moments<br />

in the transaction<br />

develop.<br />

“The main ingredient<br />

to being successful in<br />

real estate is your ability<br />

to effectively problem<br />

solve, while keeping your<br />

integrity and professionalism.<br />

If you are not a solid<br />

solution maker, you will<br />

not be an effective broker<br />

long term.”<br />
