The Secretary’s Jottings
Good afternoon everyone, welcome to Woodstock Park.
Our visitors are Hythe Town. Welcome to their players, officials and supporters. A welcome also
to this afternoon’s match officials.
Our away encounter with our visitors was a close exciting game. Hythe came out on top winning
3-2. Our goal scorers on the day (Dan Parkinson and Tom Loynes) will of course not be
playing today. In fact, eight of our starting eleven will not be playing today for one reason or another.
Hythe Town will have around six changes from their starting eleven. One interesting fact
from that game is that Billy Lewins came on as a late substitute for Hythe.
The win at Sevenoaks on an artificial surface was very pleasing. We didn’t quite reach the
heights we have been achieving lately but thanks to an improved second half we took all three
points. This was despite a swirling wind which somewhat ruined the game as a spectacle.
The conditions at Sevenoaks were bad but the conditions at Whitstable Town’s Beaumont
ground on Saturday were worse. A very strong swirling wind and a sticky pitch made the game
something of a lottery. Whitstable Town adapted to the conditions better and came out on top to
complete the double over us and put a dent in our recent good run of results.
Making his debut for us at Whitstable was Harry Barkway. Harry has joined us from Canterbury
City. On the subs bench at Whitstable was one of our talented youngsters, Frankie Phipps. I
have heard great things about him and look forward to seeing him play for us soon.
I am pleased to say that Gillingham have extended the loans of Roman Campbell and Jack
Morrell to the end of the season.
A huge thanks to our development assistant manager, Greg McHardy, for overseeing and
providing materials and labour for our completely refurbished dressing rooms. Thanks also to
various local councillor’s for providing some funding out of their allocation to provide materials
for the refit and also the KCFA . Ultimately though, it is Greg McHardy we are hugely indebted
to for the final result. Without him we would not have had the funds to do it. It is possible that
we could have been in danger of being relegated as our old dressing rooms do not meet the
new minimum requirement demanded by the FA by the 31 st March this year. The new dressing
rooms were used for the first time on Thursday night when our development side entertained
Cray Wanderers (Result not available at the time of printing).
Photographs showing some of the refurbishment are elsewhere in this programme.
Last Monday we had our facilities inspected in the Football Associations ground grading cycle
of checks. I am pleased to say that, other than a few minor issues which we have put right already,
we have reached the standard demanded.
Next Saturday we visit Greenwich Borough who will be fighting for their level 4 survival. Our
next home match is on Saturday 6 th April when we entertain Horsham.
From the Manager
Let me start by once again thanking all the fans for
their continued support, following us where ever we
travel. I would
also like to recognise
the time
and effort put in
by all the volunteers/staff
and
young players in
order to improve
our ground over
recent weeks/
months. I must
say I am highly
impressed with the fantastic new look changing
rooms, and the surrounding area. Its been a real
team effort of which the club can no doubt be proud
of for quite some time.
The team have trained hard throughout the last two
weeks in order to try to guard against complacency
and keep our great progress consistently moving
forwards and improving. We have been presented
with some tough challenges along the way whilst at
the same time trying to progress everyone of the
players individually in order to build a fantastic team
worthy of a play off spot challenge for next season.
There is so much work which goes on largely unnoticed
by many, so many hours away from families
and every bit of spare time allocated to the cause,
which without this work being carried out building
the future success would simply fail, so I would also
like to publicly thank all my back room staff for all
their efforts thus far.
I mentioned in my last update, I wasn't impressed
with our first half performance v Sevenoaks, however,
we managed to still gain the 3 points, well again
yesterday v Whitstable our first half performance
was below par. There are some consistent themes
here beginning to emerge, (1) poor weather conditions
especially the wind - we are not quick enough
to adapt to the conditions (2) surfaces which are
very different to our own - we seem to take the first
half in order to adjust to them (3) Experienced,
physical opponents who lack speed - we seem to
get bullied a little in certain positions at times even
though we are fitter and faster.
This is an honest assessment of our next stage of
development.
These are all learning points, however, I must
stress, I take full responsibility for improving us in
these areas. It is my job to set the squad up to succeed.
It is my job to work on areas of which we
have identified for development & progression. And
that we will.
Don't forget though, we have the youngest squad in
the league.. and it takes a little bit of time in order
for players to gain the experience they will need to
move forwards, which is what we are doing. I was
very pleased to bring in another young talent yesterday
at Centre Back - Harry BARKAWAY from
Canterbury City. He is another one with a bright future
ahead of him. The last 7 x remaining games
will give these young players a chance to get their
feet under the table and gain valuable experience at
this level. I firmly believe many of these young stars
will go on to play at much higher levels over the
next few years and its my pleasure to give them
their opportunities here, like it will also be great
knowing, we as a club have helped them along the
way in their footballing journeys.
On that note I would like to congratulate Frankie
Phipps for being selected to be on the subs bench
yesterday also, its worth remembering he is still
u18.
Now, there is not much I have to say about the
game yesterday, it was a poor game all round, I felt
Whitstable played the conditions a little better than
we did, even though second half we came out and
went to work. I was very embarrassed with the
standard of discipline I saw from an opposition player
who assaulted one of my staff all-be-it out of my
view, of which the officials did not see, when I
spoke to them afterwards. This type of behaviour is
not acceptable by any standards and has no room
in any football competition. We lost the game 1-2
and Timmy scored a fantastic strike which puts him
at 3 goals from the last 4 games.
I don't intend to talk any further about that encounter
other than in future, we must be better prepared
for these types of opposition and weather conditions.
Today we are at home to a strong Hythe Town
team where we will be looking to once again put on
a performance and gain 3 points.
In the grand scheme of things we are now 6 wins
from the last 8 games which is still a very good record,
its not my ideal outcome as it should have
been 7 wins from 8.
I did hear a very well humoured comment which
made me chuckle yesterday, from one of the Whitstable
fans after the match singing at me "You getting
sacked in the morning".
I love good hearted Banter, I cant begrudge them
the win after the run they have had recently.
And, I can assure you good sir, I enjoyed that one,
it at least made me leave the Belmont with a smile.
We will continue to work hard behind the scenes in
training in preparation to finish the season as strong
as possible.
Chris Lynch

From the Programme Editor
This edition features pics of our refurbished
lower dressing rooms which will now be our
main dressing rooms. John mentioned that we
had to improve them because of an FA edict
and that would have been an enormous expense
to us if Greg McHardy hadn't stepped in,
again John has written about this.
This has been a bad couple of weeks for a
number of clubs who are struggling or worse. It
began with our neighbours Herne Bay announcing
that they couldn't pay their players a
couple of weeks ago, but the largest casualty
has been North Ferriby Utd who were wound
up on the 15th March for
a debt that is reported to
be just £7000. The clubs
statement said that they
were not being allowed to
play any more fixtures
and the remaining fixtures
will not be fulfilled.
The club will be placed in
the hands of the liquidators.
North Ferriby Utd
played in the Northern
Premier League, Premier
Division which is equivalent
to the Bostik Premier.
The club won the FA
Trophy in 2015 beating
Wrexham in the final, I’m
pretty sure that I was
there!
Previous to the news about North Ferriby Utd a
step 5 club, Oadby Town, who play in the United
Counties League Premier Division, announced
that they couldn’t fulfill their remaining
fixtures because of financial reasons. However
it now has been confirmed that they have
agreed to fulfil the rest of the 2018/19 season
following offers of support from players, coaches
and potential sponsors as well as raising
some money on the JustGiving page that was
set up.
I see that sin bins are to be introduced in step
5 and 6 next season, which locally will be the
Southern Counties East Football League (Step
5) and the Kent County League (Step 6). If they
are successful then we shall them in our
league the season after next.
Finally, It gets more and more expensive to run
a club like ours hence the “target 300” initiative
that the Danish part of our supporters, Mark
Chapman, has initiated. The idea is for all of us
to do what we can to try and get an average
attendance of 300..which if we can do will
mean that we have more resources to improve
the team, so please do your bit.
Even the bigger boys are not immune as Bolton
Wanderers too have a reported £1.2 Million
tax bill unpaid. However, it is understood owner
Ken Anderson has agreed terms with a buyer
who will pay off their debts and the winding up
hearing was adjourned until 3 April.
Hyhe Town — A Brief History
Hythe Town Football Club was formed in August
1910 although football in Hythe can be
traced back into the previous century. The club
joined the Folkestone and District Leagues and
after the First World War had some success,
four championships and only once outside the
top three in fourteen seasons. They moved up
into the Kent Amateur League in 1936 and were
promoted into Division One before the Second
World War intervened. The 50s and 60s saw
little league success but that changed in the
early 70s with three successive league titles
and a Kent Junior Cup win. Hythe were granted
senior status and elected into the Kent League
in 1977, playing at the newly acquired Reachfields,
an old army sports ground on the edge of
the town’s firing ranges. The club were runnersup
in the Kent League on three occasions but it
was not until property developer Tony Walton
took over Hythe Town in February 1988 that
things really started to happen.
That summer saw the ground developed to
Southern League standard with seats and a social
club, with viewing balconies, above new
dressing rooms. Standing cover extended behind
one goal and for the whole of the far side,
and floodlights were installed. The ground capacity
still remains at 3,000 with the majority under
cover. The chairman proved to be a highprofile
character who attracted much media attention
with his high spending on the ground
and team. Town won the 1988-9 Kent League
title by 14 points and set a league record of 133
goals. The club gained promotion to the Southern
League.
The next season saw another promotion as the
main aim, but the club’s great run to the FA
Vase semi-finals handicapped their league ambitions,
with four games a week at times, and a
sixth place finish. Hythe lost out to the eventual
Vase winners Yeading, winning the home leg 3-
2 in front of the club’s record attendance of
2,147, but cruelly losing the second leg 2-0 with
the crucial goal coming from a big deflection.
They did win the Eastern Professional Floodlight
Cup at their first attempt.
The following season was very similar, topping
the table in November but runs in four cups
again caused fixture congestion and a final
placing of eighth. Hythe lost out to Trowbridge
Town in a Vase quarter-final second replay, lost
to Chelmsford City over two legs in the Southern
League Cup final, but won the Kent Senior
Trophy and retained the Eastern Professional
Floodlight Cup. The club played 40 league
games and 33 cup ties.
In 1991/2 Hythe again topped the table in the
early months but the money was beginning to
run out. With little cup success, the exit from the
Vase at Evesham United in February saw many
of the team sold and their replacements could
only finish thirteenth. the club did reach the final
of the Kent Senior Cup, losing in extra-time to
Bromley at Gillingham’s Priestfield Stadium.
That match proved to be Walton’s last game,
and he put the club into liquidation soon after.
Supporters rallied round and entered a scratch
side, as Hythe United, into the following season’s
Kent County League and negotiated continued
use of Reachfields Stadium. After three
seasons the club regained senior status and in
1995 were elected back into the Kent League
but the club would struggle for a number of seasons
in the wrong half of the table. In 2001
Hythe dropped the “United” suffix, reverting to
“Town” and in November 2002 appointed Paul
Fisk as Manager. This proved a turning point
and Hythe became a top six club. There was
one exception, in 2005/6, when again the Vase
was a distraction, winning five ties before going
out to Winchester City in the fourth round, in
front of 441 spectators at Reachfields.
In season 2007/8 Hythe forced themselves to
the top of the table in March and were considered
to be favourites for the title. Disappointment
was acute therefore when form was lost in
the final weeks and the side not only slipped to
fourth place, but also lost in the final of the
League Cup. The highlight was a fantastic FA
Cup win over Andy Hessenthaler’s Dover Athletic
before a crowd of 1,109 at Reachfields,
and achieving the important Ryman League
ground grading.
The 2010/11 season was possibly the most successful
in the history of the club, with Scott Porter
leading the side to the Kent League Championship
for the first time in over twenty years,
and with it promotion to the Ryman League. After
a 22-match unbeaten run in the new-year,
dropped points over Easter took the championship
to the wire and the league was clinched in
dramatic style on the last day of the season
through a last-minute equaliser at Tunbridge
Wells.
Continued

Hythe Town—A brief History Cont
The club achieved runners-up spot the following
season and then Scott Porter, who had been
Paul Fisk’s assistant manager, took over as
manager for the 2009/10 season with Clive
Cook as his assistant. There were many good
results but too many dropped points saw Hythe
finish in third position. Town also progressed
through three rounds of the FA Cup to be drawn
against the full-time professionals of Woking
who were relieved to escape with a replay after
an exciting 2-2 draw at Reachfields. The replay
was another tight match until the last few
minutes when Woking scored three times to go
through 5-1.
After another eighth place finish Scott Porter
and Clive Cook left the club at the end of
2013/4 and Tim Dixon was appointed as manager
in May 2014. It was a disappointing season
that saw the club finish in 16 th position and
after a poor start to 2015-16 the club decided to
part company with Dixon in September. Clive
Cook returned to take over, this time as manager
and led a remarkable turnaround from 22 nd
place to fourth as the club qualified for the Ryman
South play-offs for a second time. Defeat
followed at Worthing in the semi-final. The club
ended just outside the play-off zone in season
2017-18. Clive Cook was manager for two and
a half years in this second stint with the club
before current manager Sam Denly took over
in January 2018. The Cannons finished
once again one place from the play offs last
season.
Ground details - Capacity 3,000 (2,400 under
cover) - Record attendance: 2,147
(March 1990, versus Yeading, F.A. Vase
semi-final)
This amazing achievement was coupled with
the club’s best ever F.A. Cup run, and the best
for any Kent League side in over 50 years.
Hythe negotiated their way through six rounds,
including memorable wins over higher league
opposition at Concord Rangers of the Ryman
Premier and at home to Staines Town of the
Blue Square Bet South. The prize was an away
draw in the First Round Proper to League Two
side Hereford United. It was one round too far
on the pitch, the hosts comfortably winning 5-1
with Gary Mickelborough getting the Hythe
goal.
During the 2011/2 season the club maintained
their progress and finished in eighth place in
Ryman Division One South. Hythe were also
able to get their hands on some silverware as
wins over Ebbsfleet United and Dover Athletic
were followed by a single goal victory in the final
at Dartford to win the Kent Senior Cup. The
following season ended with a 17-match unbeaten
run and a fourth place finish. This
brought about the club’s first play-off appearance,
unfortunately losing at Faversham Town
in the semi-final.
Our New Dressing Rooms
You can’t have failed to notice the new paintwork on the lower dressing rooms . That’s not only
what’s new about those dressing rooms which will now be our main dressing rooms, medical
facility and physio room. This has all been necessary because of the FA edict that tasked all
clubs down to our level to have larger dressing rooms. Without the tremendous work by Glen
McHardy and his team we would not have this fantastic facility and we would have been forcibly
relegated at the end of the season.
We have also got the toilets in that building working again and so they can now be used.

Match Reports by Tony Rickson
Tuesday 26th February 2019
BostikSouth East
Three Bridges 0 Sittingbourne 5, att 94
At last a clean sheet, after all previous 25 league
games this season without one.
And while they were shutting out goals at one
end, Sittingbourne were scoring them for fun at
the other, clinical finishing giving them a huge
5-0 win.
It was their third away victory in a row, the first
time they’ve scored five in a game since early last
season, and three more points to take them up to
13th in the league table.
All praise to the management team skilfully led by
Chris Lynch for turning it round so spectacularly
in such a comparatively short time, but all praise
to the players, too, who have taken on board so
well his demands for commitment and determination.
Every player from first to last did well in this win
so it’s unfair to single any of them out.
But Roman Campbell has been key to the turnround
in results, scoring two and contributing two
assists – you can see him playing for the Gillingham
first team in the not too distant future given
his talent, energy and eye for a goal.
And Tommie Fagg, an excellent midfielder good
enough to attract the attention of Conference side
Maidstone, who is proving an even better central
defender. Alongside the reliable and tough Ben
Fitchett, these two played a key role in shutting
out Three Bridges.
And also the wide players, Izzy Adebayo and Tim
Babbington, who both scored, proved a handful
all night, but also put in the hard yards by tracking
back and covering on all occasions.
Sittingbourne made two changes from the team
that played excellently to win at VCD just four
days earlier, Fagg returning from suspension to
replace the injured Josh Spencer, and Henry
Woods coming in for Billy Lewins.
Three Bridges haven’t won in 10 games this year
and came into the match on the back of a 5-1 humiliation
at home from Herne Bay on Saturday,
so the last thing they needed was to have any
lingering confidence shattered by conceding an
early goal.
But that’s what happened, and it was downhill for
them after that as Sittingbourne controlled the
first half with hard running, strong tackling, and
some excellent attacking.
Campbell got the opener on 13 minutes from
close in when Jack Morrell’s low cross from Chris
Barnard’s pass was deflected his way by a defender.
A real poacher’s goal. But even before that Fagg
had had a header from a long Lewis Chambers
throw-in cleared off the line, and had also
scooped the ball off his own line when goalkeeper
Patrick Lee lost a long cross in the floodlights.
Fagg showed great anticipation to run behind him
and hook it clear, and all this with only 30 seconds
played.
Sittingbourne continued to dominate and after
Adebayo had a fierce shot turned aside for a corner,
he went one better, cutting in from the right
wing, and hitting a left-foot shot sizzling into the
far corner for a super individual goal.
And the Brickies added two more in three minutes
before the first half was out. First, a Chambers
throw was headed on neatly by Campbell for
Babbington to head home his first goal for the
club.
In a rare first half attack, Three Bridges got away
with a blatant push on Lee, causing him to miss
the ball, and Barnard had to clear off the line. The
ball was whisked forward on the counter-attack
and Woods set Campbell free with a lovely
through ball, the last defender slipping as he tried
to cut it out. Campbell raced on and blasted his
shot through the keeper for his second goal of the
night.
Just as at Hastings last month, when Sittingbourne
were on the receiving end of a first
half drubbing, the second half was an anti-climax
with the result already settled.
Three Bridges tried to mix it up a bit but Sittingbourne
stood firm and always looked dangerous
on the counter-attack where Woods and
Campbell showed great evidence of their experience
together at the Gillingham academy with
intuitive link-up play.
The home side got the ball in the net on 77
minutes – for an instant it looked like the clean
sheet had gone – but the assistant had his flag up
for offside.
And Sittingbourne rounded it off in style when sub
Abdel Ndew fed Campbell, who set it up with a
neat pass for Woods to blast home left-footed his
first goal in a couple of months.
A great finish, a great night for the fans who followed
the team to Sussex, and a superb confirmation
of the club’s decision to choose impressive
manager Lynch.
Sittingbourne: Patrick Lee, Chris Webber, Jack
Match Reports by Tony Rickson
Saturday 2nd March 2019
Bostik South East
Sittingbourne 3 Faversham Town 1, att 295
Sittingbourne’s biggest home gate of the season
saw them battle their way to victory over
their nearest neighbours and chalk up a fourth
successive win.
This wasn’t like the previous three wins. East
Grinstead was all about determinedly fighting
back from behind, VCD about dominating from
the off and then defiantly holding on, and
Three Bridges was just a total demolition job.
But this was a more even sort of game, and
ended up all about taking chances, getting into
a winning position and then stubbornly managing
the game and seeing it out.
Sittingbourne and Faversham had already won
and lost against each other this season, and
went into the match locked together on the
same number of points, so it was unlikely there
was ever going to be much in it.
On a blustery afternoon, Sittingbourne kept the
side that won handsomely
5-0 at Three Bridges in midweek, Jack Morrell
shaking off the injury that saw him substituted
in the first half of that match.
There was little in it for the opening minutes
but Sittingbourne soon grabbed the lead when
Faversham snatched at a chance to clear, allowing
Timmie Babbington to sneak in behind
and go one-on-one with the advancing keeper.
He made no mistake with his finish, claiming
his second goal in successive games, and
marking it with a lovely athletic celebration.
The midfield area policed effectively and determinedly
by Lewis Chambers and Chris Barnard
was well under the control of Sittingbourne
and when Roman Campbell was
freed to run at the Faversham back line he was
crudely felled at full speed by Brickies old boy
Matt Bourne.
Sittingbourne looked far more dangerous than
Faversham and made it 2-0 on 33 minutes
when Barnard pulled the ball back from the left
wing and Chambers hit a first-time shot from
outside the area that the keeper could only
help into his own net.
Not much at all for Faversham to cheer about
all the first half and when they did get the ball
in the net six minutes later it was offside anyway.
Sittingbourne’s ever-loyal fans were in great
voice behind the goal but Faversham made a
concerted effort to battle back into the
game after half-time and it was captain Bourne
who did it on 53 minutes, powerfully heading
home Monger’s corner.
Sittingbourne were rocking for a bit and Faversham
sub Griffiths missed a great chance of
an equaliser when a good move opened up the
defence.
But this Sittingbourne side are made of stern
stuff and they restored the crucial two-goal advantage
on 73 minutes, Morrell and Woods
combining out on the left to cross for Billy Lewins
– just four minutes after coming on – timing
his jump beautifully to head home. That’s the
second successive home game when Lewins,
despite being just about the smallest player on
the field, has headed a crucial goal up that end
of the pitch.
A 2-1 lead is wobbly but a 3-1 advantage feels
comfortable, and Sittingbourne saw it out well.
They could – should – have got another when
Lewins was shoved over in the area by Bourne
but the referee waved play on.
The man in black could also have given Campbell
a bit more protection in his many physical
tussles with the evergreen Bourne, but what a
good learning curve for the promising Gills
youngster it all is.
So another win to enjoy, and that’s almost as
many points from just the last six games as
Sittingbourne had got all season before that.
Can’t be bad.
Sittingbourne: Patrick Lee, Chris Webber,
Jack Morrell, Tommie Fagg, Ben Fitchett, Lewis
Chambers, Izzy Adebayo (Abdel Ndew, 73
min), Chris Barnard (Yellow card), Roman
Campbell, Henry Woods (Khalil McFarlane, 79
min), Timmie Babbington (Billy Lewins, 68 min,
Yellow card). Subs not used: Kwase Amoah,
Matt Funnell.
