From the Desk of the President
I would really like to say, “Yay! It’s spring,” but that would be a bit
premature. Oh, well, we need the rain. It did clear up a bit for the ride
to Seasons of Refreshing, but more than one person referred to not
particularly liking to ride when the temperature is in the 30s.
However, Paul Bridges did just fine on his brand-new bike with an
Iron Steed license plate bracket on the back.
At Seasons, Tom Palazzolo, our regional evangelist, talked about the
parable of the feast and how the host told his servants to go out and
compel poor people to come since the “important” people initially invited all had reasons why
they couldn’t make it. Very interesting. Funny how God does things differently than we
would. It makes me think of some of those scientific terms I learned in college like parallel
realities and the extra dimension. In Biblical terms, God’s ways are not our ways. He calls us
to live according to His ways, in His reality, His dimension. We are to compel the lowly and
then disciple them to do great things through Christ.
Tom Palazzolo also shared a great video his son, a professional motorcycle trainer, made
for his own website, www.canyonchasers.net. It was just a fun video that equated different
models of bikes to various spaceships from famous movies and video games – and it was
pretty accurate! The website also has great travel logs, maintenance blogs, and lots more. So,
if it keeps raining, spend a while in front of your computer reading about riding.
Good news: We will once again be holding our Run for the Son event on May 4th at New
Hope Christian Fellowship, 4910 Allison Parkway, Vacaville. Last time we rode out of New
Hope, there were a couple of especially interesting back roads that were still closed from
storm damage. They are open now – and hopefully will stay that way. It’s only March, so
Jerry Conner has a couple of months to decide where to take everyone that day.
Speaking of future events, Tom White has officially blocked 8 rooms at the Pine Beach Inn
just south of Fort Bragg. If you have not already done so, you can text Tom at 510-734-0688
to let him know you want to reserve a room. We will head there after our August meeting and
spend the night. Part of what makes the overnighter so cool is having dinner together
Saturday night and then the Sunday morning service we have as a group. Thank you, Tom, for
heading that up.
Last thought: Back in the days when I was a Cub Scout about 60 years ago, (Is that a scary
thought or what?) part of the Boy Scout oath was “to help other people at all times.” That
way you were always looking for a way to help someone. In terms of ministry with CMA, we
should set a goal of sharing our faith with someone each day and that way we are always
looking for opportunities to spread the Good News – whether it’s riding whether or not.
Pray for safety before you ride -
Chaplain's
Messa s Message
Greetings LKs. March is in February is gone. We had a great time of fellowship and hearing
the message delivered by our regional evangelist. We also were treated to a very entertaining
video that showed comparisons of the different classes of motorcycles to spaceships that have
been depicted in movies. (I can't remember a single one, but it was entertaining.)
I do remember what Tom Pallozolo said about us being a bunch of misfits,
ornery, cantankerous outcasts who have been set apart by God for work in
the motorcycle mission field. That is a very good description of us
(especially me). I sure can relate to what the apostle Paul said in 1 Timothy
1:15 that he describes as a "trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance:
Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners - of whom I am the worst". I
guess that's a good thing because I can better relate to bikers with those same
attributes. HA!
Here's an example; I was out on a ride by myself last week (that's what grouchy old bikers
do when they're too grumpy to be around) and I stopped off at Iron Steed HD to go in and look
at things I didn't want, didn't need, or couldn't afford and when I got ready to leave I noticed
another grumpy old biker (like me) leaving about the same time. I nodded at him but I could
tell that my CMA vest didn't impress him or give me the privilege of a return nod. So out we
went to our bikes and as I was fumbling around I kept glancing over toward him, who was
already in the saddle with helmet on and bike running with nose in the air. (Man am I grumpy!)
So I get mounted up with a few rude thoughts running through my head when off he goes. (Off
the bike that is.) He hadn't quite figured it out that when you roll on the throttle and let out the
clutch that you have to have the front wheel fairly in line with the rest of the motorcycle.
Sooo... there he is with the bike running and his right leg pinned underneath. OH BOY! I
jumped off my bike and ran over and JUMPED on the side of his motorcycle and began
yelling... "see what happens when you mess"... I did not!!! I would never do that. I grabbed his
heavenward pointed handlebar and lifted his bike off of him. He was cussing (himself) and
jumped up and helped me finish bringing the bike to the position best suited for riding (that'd
be upright). He muttered "I haven't done that in 10 years." I thought "Hmm." But I said, "Wish
I had a nickel for every time that's happened to me." He barely got out a stiff, "thanks", and I
slapped him on his shoulder and and said, "No worries. Keep it upright." We kind of chuckled
and when I made sure he was okay to saddle up I left him to lick his wounded ego and I
(strutted) back... (no I did not) to my bike and let him roll out before me. Who knows; maybe
he'll remember what a CMAer did for him and visit our chapter some day. The main thing was
that we were there when he needed. That's who we are and what we do. The seed is planted.
Praise the Lord.
Road Captain's Saddle
If you have any ride ideas, please let our Road Captain know!
Windy Wambles
What do you do when a gust of wind pushes you toward the centerline?
You’ve been itching for a long ride ever since the weather started warming up, and this
weekend you decide that motorcycling will take priority. The weather isn’t likely to be very
warm, but at least there's no rain in the forecast Friday night, you tend the engine oil and tire
pressures, lubricate cable ends, snug up all the fasteners, stow your electric vest, and wipe the
bike clean. Saturday morning, you suit up and roll the bike
out.
Leaving town, you try to recall all the survival tactics, such as
staying out of the blind spots of trucks, watching for left
turning vehicles at intersections, and avoiding loose sand
berms left from wintertime maintenance. You intend to have a
long, hard ride, not spend the day filling out accident forms.
After lunch, you find the winds have picked up, with
occasional nasty gusts. As you’re halfway across a bridge,
suddenly a strong gust blast you from the right, pushing the
bike toward the oncoming cars. You almost sideswipe one
before the gust abates, and you’re able to get the bike back
onto your side of the road. The gust surprised you, and you’re
shocked that you couldn't keep the bike from being blown into
oncoming traffic. At the end of the bridge, you pull over to
relax.
To counter a wind gust, you need to get the bike leaned upwind as quickly as possible. The
only way to get the bike leaned quickly is to steer the front wheel (not just thinking “lean” and
shifting your weight over). To counter a gust from your right, you must press the right grip
forward to get the bike leaned over into the wind. Then when the gust abates, you’ll need to
press the left grip forward to roll the bike vertical again. You can often see clues about wind
gusts from foliage or surrounding water, and yo should always expect crosswinds when you’re
riding over a bridge or coming around a hill. To prepare yourself for quick changes of lean
angle, practice countersteering as the primary way you control balance and direction.
Run for the Son
God has His own timing and His own special way of calling each person to repentance.
For some people, a large event with powerful
speakers and emotional music is what works.
For others, a patient conversation with a
trusted friend is the key to unlocking a heart.
And for others, God uses pain as His attention
getter.
C.S. Lewis said "God whispers to us in our
pleasures, He speaks in our conscience, but
shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to
rouse a deaf world."
This story from Eastern Europe shows the power of the gospel to transform a soul in pain.
Summer had arrived and people milled about outside, enjoying the weather. Maksim took little notice
of his surroundings as he left his house that afternoon. He had one thing on his mind: buying alcohol.
Maksim had heard all the arguments from friends and family—even "religious" reasons—about why he
shouldn't drink. So far, the arguments fell short of convincing him he should change. Numbing his
mind was all that mattered.
As Maksim walked down the street toward the liquor store, he heard music. A group of enthusiastic
young men and women stood ahead on the sidewalk near the curb, playing guitars and singing songs.
They also handed out flyers, inviting passersby to a showing of "JESUS."
Instead of avoiding them, Maksim confidently approached. "Time to enlighten these people," he
thought.
After a short conversation, the group made a deal with Maksim: If he would attend the film showing,
they would listen to Maksim's reasons for "why there is no God." So he agreed to attend the screening
later that night.
When the movie ended, Maksim stood up and said he had changed his mind—he didn't want to debate
them. No longer proud and boastful, he said his reasons for doubting God's existence were not valid.
Maksim then asked the men and women how he could personally encounter the Jesus he had just seen
and heard in the film. His newfound friends led him in a
prayer of repentance, and Maksim accepted Christ as his
Savior. Now Maksim attends a local church and plans to
be baptized.
A face-to-face encounter with Jesus showed Maksim his
need for a Savior. The pain he was numbing with alcohol
could finally be healed by the One who died to take on all
our pain.
Who do you know in pain? Could Jesus be the answer they are looking for? Could you be the one to
introduce them to Jesus?
