annual Simone Biles International Invitational. Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital sponsored the competition and provided medical coverage
throughout the event, which ran February 14 th -17 th at the World Champions Centre, Hilton Houston North and Houston Marriott North. More than
1,900 athletes attended the invitational.

Exchange Student?
You don’t have any kids? Are you a single parent? Same sex couple? An
empty nester? This is not a problem, we place our students in all kinds
of families!
You’re not rich? Neither am I! Your exchange student comes with their
own spending money and health insurance. All you provide is room/
board and three meals a day. Oh and TLC…but that’s free.
Live in the middle of nowhere? Small town? Not a big deal. Some kids prefer
to get away from the hustle and bustle of big cities. The exchange students
also do pretty well in small schools, as they usually get to be the center of
attention and make friends rather quickly. Our students also get chances
to travel to New York, Washington DC, Hawaii and California… so they can
get their fill of the city life and return back to the peaceful sounds of nature.
Do you consider yourself a boring person? More than likely this is not true
and you should quit being so hard on yourself. Your student will make
friends. Your student will meet other exchange students. Your student will
attend activities offered by our program. Your student will get involved in
sports and school clubs. Your purpose is not to entertain them. But you
might find that you bring a little adventure to each other’s lives.
Kids are too young? Great! Lots of students love young kids and your kids
will love them. It’s beneficial to introduce your kids to new cultures at a
very young age. You’re preparing them to accept people no matter what
the religion, color of their skin,or language they speak. That my friend, is
good parenting.
Don’t hold back! This is a great experience for both parties. You get the
opportunity to change a child’s life. You get the satisfaction of seeing
them grow, even after they leave your home into becoming a doctor, a
lawyer, a diplomat, artist, teacher… the list goes on. And you contributed
to that success! And the best part of it all, is you gain another family
member for life. We need people like you to give these kids a chance.

Chives: Chives add a flavor similar to onion without the bite. Plus, their
slender tube-like appearance looks great as a garnish either snipped and
sprinkled or laid elegantly across a plate. Add these delicate herbs at the
very end to maximize their color and flavor. Purple chive blossoms are
more pungent than the stems and can be a beautiful addition to a salad.
Dill: The feathery leaves or fronds, of the dill plant add a pleasant aniselike
flavor to seafood, soups, salads and sauces. Its subtle taste makes an
excellent complement to foods with delicate flavors like fish and shellfish
and it is commonly used in cuisine across Europe and the Middle East.
Fresh dill should have a strong scent and keeps in the refrigerator for
about 3 days.

Flavor To Your Favorite Dishes
Basil: A close relative to mint, basil has a floral anise- and clove-like
flavor and aroma. There are two main types of basil: Sweet or Genoese,
basil and Asian basils. In Western cuisine, basil is most often associated
with Mediterranean foods like pesto and tomato sauce. Sweet basil pairs
naturally with tomatoes, but it can be used with almost every type of
meat or seafood. Asian basil has a more distinct anise flavor and is often
used in soups, stews, stir fries and curry pastes.
Parsley: One of the most common and versatile herbs used in Western
cooking, parsley has a light peppery flavor that complements other
seasonings. It’s most often used in sauces, salads and sprinkled over
dishes at the end of cooking for a flash of green and a fresh taste. Flatleaf
or Italian parsley has the best texture and flavor for cooking. Curly
parsley is best used only as a garnish.
Cilantro, also called coriander: Has a flavor that some people find
“soapy,” but it’s still one of the world’s most popular spices. Many people
are addicted to its bright refreshing flavor and it’s a staple of Latin and
Asian cooking. The sweet stems and leaves are usually eaten raw, added
after a dish has been cooked. The roots are used to make Thai curry
pastes.
Mint: Although more commonly associated with sweet treats, mint lends
its cooling, peppery bite to plenty of savory dishes, particularly from
the Middle East and North Africa. Fresh mint is perfect for summer-fresh
salads, to liven up a sauce and or to brew fragrant teas. The cooling flavor
is also used to temper spicy curries.
Rosemary: A tough, woody herb with a pungent flavor, rosemary’s
spiky leaves can be used fresh or dried for long cooking in soups, meats,
stews or sauces. Because the flavor is strong, it’s best to add rosemary
sparingly at first and more if needed. Fresh rosemary can be stored for
about a week in the fridge either in a plastic bag or stems down in a glass
of water with a plastic bag around the top.
Thyme: One of the most popular herbs in American and European
cooking, thyme can be paired with nearly any kind of meat, poultry,
fish or vegetable. To use fresh thyme, peel off as many of the leaves as
you can from the woody stem by running your fingers along the stem.
Particularly with younger thyme, some of the main stem or little offshoot
stems will be pliable and come off with the leaves, which is fine. Thyme
keeps for at least a week in the fridge, wrapped in a damp paper towel
and stored in a plastic bag.
Sage: Most people use dried sage once a year for their Thanksgiving
stuffing, but there are many other delicious uses for this herb, particularly
in dishes with pork, beans, potatoes, cheese or in the classic sage
and brown butter sauce. The flavor can be somewhat overwhelming
particularly with dried sage - so start off with a small amount and build
on that. Fresh sage can add nuance and complexity to a dish.

OreganoP: Oregano, a pungent herb primarily found in Mediterranean
and Mexican cuisines, is one of the few herbs that dries well, so it is easier
to find dried oregano than fresh. Dried oregano can be substituted for
fresh, but use half as much dried oregano as you would fresh since the
flavor is more concentrated. Oregano can also be used as a substitute for
its close cousin, marjoram.

Health Numbers To Know Now
Take control of your health by learning these six numbers; they’ll help
with everything from losing weight to protecting your heart:
1) Daily calorie needs: Most women need 2,000 calories a day for good
health and men generally need about 2,550. One way to work out your
daily calorie needs is to multiply your weight in pounds by 13 to 15,
depending on your activity level. But roughly, that’s 300 to 400 calories
for breakfast, 500 to 600 for lunch, 600 to 700 for dinner and two or three
snacks of roughly 100 to 200 calories each. Trying to lose weight? Eat
roughly 500 calories less.
2) Waist size: For women, health risk begins to rise when your waist is
more than 35 inches. For men, risk increases with a measurement when
your waist is over 40 inches.
3) LDLs & HDLs: Aim for total cholesterol below 5.2 mmol/l (below 5
mmol/l if you have heart disease or diabetes) and LDL cholesterol levels
below 3.5 mmol/l or below 2 mmol/l if you have a history of heart disease.
A healthy HDL level is 1.3 mmol/l or above.
4) Blood pressure: A reading of 140/90 mm Hg or more is considered high
and if it’s between 120/80 and 139/89, you may still be at risk and should
be taking steps to prevent the development of hypertension.
5) Triglyceride levels: A normal triglyceride reading is less than 1.7
mmol/l. Your doctor will advise you how often you should have your
triglycerides checked.
6) Morning pulse rate: a normal resting pulse rate is 60 to 90 beats per
minute. People who are fit tend to have lower resting pulse rates because
their heart muscles are in good shape. But if you don’t exercise regularly
and your heart rate is lower than the normal range, tell your doctor-it
could be a sign of heart disease.

special a day to helping for the earth is a way to demonstrate how much
we care about the future of our planet. Here are some meaningful ways

2) Recycle your e-waste - old televisions, computers, anything electrical
can be recycled
3) Plant food - plant your own vegetables, fruits and herbs
4) Share something - whether it is a charger, your own phone or anything
- share, don’t waste

Festival, “Shifting Gears,” at the Berry Center (8877 Barker Cypress).
During the event, students from all grade levels and campuses will share
how they are using 21 st -Century tools to enhance their learning in all
content areas and prepare them for successful lives after Cy-Fair ISD.
Students will showcase their talents and skills using devices such as
Chromebooks, laptops, tablets and interactive whiteboards and through
the use of robotics, computer programming, graphic arts, automotive

Annual Superintendent’s Fun Run
And Festival Raises Record $110,000
Nearly 6,000 Cypress-Fairbanks ISD staff, students, community members
and business partners came together at the Berry Center and Cy-Fair FCU
Stadium for the sixth annual Superintendent’s Fun Run and Festival on
March 2 nd . The fundraiser culminated with CFISD and Memorial Hermann
Cypress Hospital representatives presenting a check worth a record
$110,000 to the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF).
The event featured a 5K run and 1-mile family-friendly walk/run. Both had
new course layouts, with the 5K race taking place through Towne Lake
and Lone Star College-CyFair. The family path included the walkways on
the stadium’s home side and featured high school inflatable tunnels on
the field and spirit teams encouraging participants. Sponsor and vendor
booths, food trucks, bounce houses and student performances made the
day even more special for all event guests.

“We had great crowds and we brought in a record total. I can’t sufficiently
thank our CFISD employees, community and of course, our title sponsor,
Memorial Hermann Cypress,” said Dr. Mark Henry, CFISD superintendent
of schools. “It’s just a great event. When you’re in a large community and
a large district, a community event like this brings us all a little closer
together. That’s what it’s really all about.”
The event drew approximately 4,400 total race participants. In addition,
1,400 registered for the sleep-in pass, which allowed an option for those
who wanted to support the CFEF but were unable to attend. Nearly 550
students volunteered, while 18 student performance groups entertained
race and festival participants. Student performances included the
Cypress Lakes High School R.E.D. Storm, Tipps Elementary School
Synergy Squad, Pope Elementary School percussion ensemble, Francone
Elementary School Hoopers and M. Robinson Elementary School choir.
“This community comes out and supports Cy-Fair ISD and the Cy-Fair
Educational Foundation and Memorial Hermann Cypress is just proud to
be a small part of that,” said Heath Rushing, Memorial Hermann Cypress
and Katy senior vice president and CEO. “The community supports us
and we can’t do what we do without that support, so when there are

17TH ANNUAL WARBIRD WEEKEND
APRIL 13 TH & 14 TH
The world-famous CAF B-17 Flying Fortress Texas Raiders will be
headlining the 17 th annual Warbird Weekend April 13 th -14 th at the West
Houston Airport in Houston, TX. Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Houston
Wing will host the popular Warbird Weekend at their museum at the West
Houston Airport. The B-17 Texas Raiders, along with the only flying SB2C
dive-bomber Helldiver, replica Japanese Zeros from the TORA TORA TORA
performance unit and the Vietnam era CH-46 “Sea Knight” helicopter
will all be in attendance. Various WWII warbirds will be on display and
available for public flights and visiting aircraft will offer cockpit tours for
the entire weekend.
This year the Lone Star Classic Chevy Convention car show will also take
place during the Warbird Weekend. The Chevy Convention will include
over 50 classic Chevrolet cars from 1955-1957.
The admission fee is $20 per car at the gate. Proceeds from the event
help fund facility operations and the restoration and operation of the

Summer Camps
CAMP CORNERSTONE IS
THE PLACE TO BE THIS SUMMER
Camp Cornerstone is a week-long camp sponsored by Cornerstone United
Methodist Church and is for children ages 2 through the completion of 4 th
grade. Children must be 2 by June 1, 2019. Camp hours are 9:30 AM-1
PM. There are 3 sessions throughout the summer and you are invited to
participate in any or all!
Session I: “Stars & Stripes” is June 17 th -21 st , Session II: “Around the World”
is July 15 th -19 th , Session III: “Outer Space” is August 5 th -9 th . The cost per
camp per child is $125 and is due at the time of registration. To download
a form from the Cornerstone website, go to www.cornerstoneumc.org and
click on “Ministries” and then select “Preschool.” You will see a tab for
Camp Cornerstone. Print the form and have it filled out before you arrive,
saving yourself time! Before each camp session begins, you will hear from
your child’s teacher so you can learn more about the camp and they will
answer questions about the week-long fun. Each day your child will bring a
backpack and a lunch as they enjoy each other and the special things they
will do during the week. We look forward to having your child at camp this
summer! It’s a great time for everyone and you don’t want to miss any of it!

CELEBRATE PASSOVER IN NORTHWEST HOUSTON
This year beginning on sundown of April 19 th , we will be Celebrating
Passover, marking exactly 3,331 years since the Exodus from ancient
Egypt! Few Jewish holidays evoke the same warm sentiments as
Passover. Memories of family and friends gathered as the four cups of
wine are poured, the four questions asked and the Matzah served, all
contribute to Passover’s popularity in the Jewish community. Bringing
the warmth and tradition of this festival to the Cy-Fair Community,
Chabad of Cypress & Northwest Houston is inviting all Jewish residents
to participate in the Community Seder to be held on Friday night, April
19 th .
“The Seder takes participants through the wondrous liberation of our
ancestors from Egyptian bondage, while sharing the relevance and
beauty of the age old festival in our modern lives.” Included in the Seder
will be a delectable catered dinner paired with a variety of fine imported
wines and handmade round ‘Shmurah’ Matzah.
“Passover is not simply a celebration of the historic liberation of an
ancient people,” Rabbi Levi Marinovsky, Director of Chabad of Chabad of
Cypress, stated in the press release. “Passover is about our own personal
liberation - physically, emotionally and spiritually. Passover inspires us
to break free from the shackles restraining us from reaching new heights
- in our lives, relationships and connection with God.”
Chabad’s community seder is part of a global Passover campaign that
began in 1954, when the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of
blessed memory, considered the most influential rabbi in modern history,
launched the Shmurah Matzah initiative as part of an effort to create
awareness and promote observance of the holiday. An estimated four
million hand-baked Shmurah Matzahs will be distributed by the Chabad-
Lubavitch movement this year. If you would like a Free Handmade

EPIPHANY BINGO
Epiphany Bingo has been conducting bingo games on the west side
since February 14, 1986. Epiphany conducts their bingo games every
Friday night except holidays. THERE IS NO SMOKING ALLOWED DURING
ALL BINGO GAMES. They have a jackpot game of $750. Maximum prize
giveaways of $2,500, allowed by law, are given away every Bingo
Night! They have security, lighted parking, big screen color monitor,
computerized bingo equipment, snack bar and large cash prizes. Profits
are used for charitable outreach programs, building expansion, and

Zucchini Bread
You could make this on National Zucchini Bread Day April 25th!
INGREDIENTS:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup sour cream
2 cups shredded zucchini
1 cup chopped walnuts
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Lightly grease two 9x5 inch loaf pans.
In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda
and salt. In a large bowl, beat together the sugar and oil. Stir in
the eggs one at a time, beating well with each addition, then
stir in the vanilla. Blend this mixture into the flour mixture,
alternately with the sour cream, stir just to combine. Fold in
the zucchini and nuts, mixing just enough to evenly combine.
Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake in preheated oven for 80
minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf

1 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup water
4 tablespoons lemon flavored Jell-O® mix
4 cups fresh blueberries
1 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker crust
DIRECTIONS: In a medium saucepan, mix together the sugar and
cornstarch. Pour in water and bring to a full boil. Turn off heat and
add in gelatin; stir until completely dissolved. Let cool.
When mixture is cooled fold in blueberries. Gently pour into the
graham cracker crust. Cover and refrigerate for about an hour or until

Gardening Tips For April
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great
many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you
buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying
ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material
and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6”
below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will
aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate
termite inspections.
• Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12”
- 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that
is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can
grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of
the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover
plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy
that grows on your walls.
• Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray
eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to
resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The
fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from
occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy
winter’s dormancy.
• Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop
brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin
and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a)
lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control.
Most important is proper watering: Water once per week (unless you
get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) • Water heavily (1” - 2”)
for total lawn coverage. • In severe drought, water every 5th day. •
Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. • A heavy
deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and more
drought resistant roots. • Less watering also saves you money!!
