Editorial:
Hi all.
The last of the February & March Rally’s
have now been completed. By the sounds of
it, everyone had a great time, and are now
looking for an excuse to go on the next one.
The 2019 planners are included in the newsletters,
and are also posted on the ‘world
wide web’.
Queensland have their Ubobo Country Music
Campout & Tag-a-long on 6-15th April.
See the details on the Qld Rallies Page.
WA has 2 fantastic Tag-a-longs happening
during the year. The first being Shane &
Rob’s Winter Goldfields Rally from 4-12th
June. Spend the winter exploring WA’s outback
over 9 nights and don’t forget your
camp oven.
The second is Pete’s & my “Bringing up the
Rear” Rally across the Nullabor to the AGM
from 6-14th October.
Further information on both can be found in
the WA Rallies Section on the website.
Ulysses Club Inc—Warnbro Sounds is
hosting the WA North West Rally in Denham
CONTACT DETAILS
(Shark Bay) over the June long weekend (1-
3rd June) and I’ve invited us along. (Pete & I
are already there). So if your travelling up
North, why not join the Ulysses Club Inc Rally
and catch up with long lost friends, even
those you haven’t met yet. The flyer can be
found in the WA Rallies section. Although
it’s not an official RV Rally,
we are welcome as a
group. Registrations etc.,
are payable to the organizers.
For those travelling in
NSW, and just want something to do, there
is the ‘Bundanoon Highland Gathering Festival’
on the 6th April, or ‘the Grey Mardi
Gras’ on 12-15th April. Advertised as a
“Festival of happiness”. See https://
www.visitnsw.com/events-festivals-andcelebrations
Or if your travelling in outback Queensland,
‘The Birdsville Big Red Bash’ on from 16-
18th July, if you happen to be going past.
Details at http://www.bigredbash.com.au/
That’s all for now. Keep the
SA Normanville
Report
NORMANVILLE 8 th to 10 th February 2019
Normanville has such an attractive coastline and is a lovely little town,
it was a bit surprising that this was our first time to the Normanville
Jetty Caravan Park. I suppose that having been to neighbouring places
(Rapid Bay & Wirrinya) a couple of times that Normanville has been
overlooked. However I’m sure that there will be a return visit in years
to come as it was very popular with the 20 or so attendees.
The group was allocated a section of the park at the southern end which was sheltered behind the
sand dunes if the wind came up. A timber boardwalk through the dunes connected the caravan park to
the beach. Hobbit and Vicky scored “prime real estate” in one of the unpowered areas of this section
as it abutted the sand dunes, was nicely grassed and was exclusively
theirs. The rest of us occupied good sized sites that even accommodated
Hoppy and Pats large motorhome.
By Friday night almost everyone had arrived and settled into their happy
hour(s). Although the day was warm the night became fairly cool
but that didn’t stop the socialising. It was great to see that couples
who started joining in last year are coming along again this year – they
might get to be called “regulars” if they keep attending for the next few years (only joking as they have
probably attained that status now).
Saturday was a pretty restful day with some visiting local coffee shops, second-hand/antique shops or
going for a tour to see the many sights in the district. There was also plenty of time to do long or short
walks along the beautiful beach. And before you knew it, it was happy hour time again and more tall
stories being told.
Again the group had a few day tripping visitors join us on each day, with the first being Rainman and
Pearl dropping in while doing a ‘reccy’ in preparation for the Fleurieu Branch ride on Sunday. On Saturday
it was Colin & Di (normally at these weekends but having work on their caravan prior to going
away the following weekend) and Warren & Sonya. Jim and Jules visited us on Sunday while giving the
big green trike a workout through the hills. But the biggest group was the
Fleurieu Branch riders who we joined with for lunch at the Normanville
Jetty Kiosk. This was a great idea as it enhanced what the club is all about –
Ulysses members socialising together – I hope there is more of it.
hour out of Adelaide.
Again there were a few stayers on Sunday night extending out their weekend.
All in all a great weekend at a very relaxing spot approximately an
The 2019 program is now complete with both dates and destinations finalised. The RV AGM is in Sth
Aust next year, registrations soon to be available but site bookings are being taken at the caravan park
so come along and support that on
14 th to 20 th OCTOBER 2019
NSW Summer
Rally Report
NSW Summer Rally Report
Our first rally for 2019 in Moruya along the Moruya River in the South Coast of NSW
was well attended. Eighteen vans occupied the camping areas and two cabins were
booked.
Having a cuppa in the local cafe, I could “spot the Ulyssean” heading South to the National
Rally on the Mornington Peninsula via the beautiful coastal highway. They were
easy to spot… some towing trailers, others laden with luggage, ah yes, I remember
those journeys well …..
Thirty four attended a dinner at the Moruya Golf Club on Thursday night. A great 3
course feed for a bargain!
Friday afternoon was spent participating or watching the Ulysses Rally Olympics.
We dined at the Bowling Club on Saturday, where great value pizzas were on offer as
well as a good menu to choose from. This time Thirty Seven (all rally attendees) went
to dinner!
We had a few departures on Sunday morning, but most stayed on for a few more
days.
(Maybe they heard about the karaoke planned for Sunday evening ……
share
tap-
And yes, Sunday evening most people gathered in the camp kitchen to
their meals with good company followed by a bit of group karaoke, toe
ping and dancing. Arvie joined us too !!
An enjoyable first NSW RV rally shared
with great company and we look forward
to meeting up at either Valla for the RV
birthday bash or our next rally in May at
Deniliquin, or with those heading to the
Ulysses National Rally, safe travels and
have fun.
NSW Valla
Beach Rally
By Bob Lucas
11th BIRTHDAY RALLY AT VALLA BEACH
OK, I was conned into writing this report after President Ken got sick of listening to me whinge
about my own branch never submitting reports for me to publish … as if I haven’t already got
enough to do! Goodonyer Ken!
But this was a great rally, apart from a very wet start for the 10 people
gathered under our awning for Happy Hour on the first Sunday.
The Heavens opened, and then the lively westerly made sure there
was nowhere to hide … but despite all this the brollies came out and
everyone stuck it out (well, almost everyone).
On Monday more avid travellers rolled in, and the weather was kind enough to allow them to
set up, and for us all to enjoy a dry Happy Hour near the Conference Centre.
While missing some of the charm of Brooms Head, Valla Beach has it’s own special attractions
including a tidal estuary for swimming, kayaking and fishing, a
footbridge across the estuary to access the surf beach for more
of the same, a great swimming pool within the grounds, tennis
courts for the more adventurous, and plenty of waterside walks
right at hand. OK, it’s a bit of a hike up the hill to the café and
tavern for those who don’t like cooking – but young Barry found
the 2Kms no problem at all, sometimes twice a day (you really
should learn to cook, Barry!).
And it’s only a 15 minute drive to Nambucca for serious shopping, or 30 minutes up to Coffs.
The camp sites are very large, amenities are good, and despite some very scattered site allotments
at the start, Rose and the other staff were very welcoming and obliging to assist Ken to
re-site the ones positioned close to Syberia.
Tuesday was another wet afternoon, forcing us
to party under the Conference Centre veranda
and rendering our gathering somewhat fragmented.
But that didn’t prevent us from catching
up with people we hadn’t seen since Boonah,
or longer.
On Wednesday Ken invited us up to the tavern
for dinner, and most of us went along to enjoy
the great cuisine there. Meals start at a mere $7 (yep, seven dollars)! That’s providing you
have a drink as well, but that generally didn’t present a problem. I didn’t hear anything but
praise for the meals.
On Thursday Ken had organised for us to head up to the Pub with no Beer at Taylors Arm.
About 5 carloads of us went in convoy … but we were somewhat disappointed to discover that
the pub DID in fact have beer! It’s a really iconic old pub (as is the old Talarm church at the
rear), and once again the meals and prices were pretty darn good.
Friday night was the local Meat Tray raffle at the shed, run by
Ross. It was well attended by locals, other campers, and of
course a good-sized contingent of RV’ers, resplendent in their
lovely green shirts. The RV’ers obviously spent well, as they
cleaned up a high percentage of the prizes.
NSW Valla
Beach Report
By Bob Lucas
Saturday morning the girls held their Stitch & Bitch session
under the Lucas awning (I know that term’s not politically correct,
but hey, who’s penning this report!). Without the girls us
fellas were at a bit of a loose end - but we did manage to find
things to keep us busy J.
On Saturday night we held Happy Hour at the shed, then incinerated
our preferred animals on the BBQ before heading inside
and loading our plates with healthy salads so generously prepared and served by Doreen,
Di, Sandy, Georgie (and maybe others – apologies if I’ve missed anyone).
Ken then ran our RV Group raffles with literally dozens of prizes.
Hans won the coveted free week of accommodation at the
park. It was a really beaut, sort of “final” get-together evening.
We look forward to meeting up again at the Lake Albert AGM in
October, or maybe at earlier state rallies.
Throughout the week I heard many fond references to Rick (and Sherol) and the fantastic legacy
he has set up for our continued enjoyment. It was so sad they could not join us on this significant
occasion, but we thank Rick for his tireless work as leader of the group, and we join in
wishing him the best possible comfort at this time of suffering.
