Who really knows exactly what tomorrow will bring? On the other hand, fortunately,
we know exactly what will remain: reliable quality – that never goes out of fashion.
For 50 years, only the best for our customers has been good enough; and this
will not change in the future – that‘s a promise. What is going to change is that we
at HAKRO are going to make more focused use of the marvellous possibilities of
the digital age – for better and quicker service; and for more satisfied dealers and
customers. We are working on this with passion and commitment. Let yourself be

Company Director and the daughter of the founder of HAKRO – Harry Kroll.

In 1969 your father, Harry Kroll,
started his own business and later on
founded HAKRO. What inspired him?
My father was and is almost obsessive
about quality. From the very beginning –
initially as a retailer – he offered only those
items for sale that had something special
about them and at the same time satisfied
his high demands for quality. Even back then,
his customers thanked him with enthusiasm
and loyalty. When he founded HAKRO later
on, it was clear to him that he wanted to
apply these factors for success (in today’s
language: USP (Unique Selling Proposition))
to the HAKRO collection. During his
first visits to production partners, both
domestic and overseas, he therefore
placed the greatest emphasis on highquality
materials and perfect workmanship.
He wanted his collection to be manufactured
by partners who were prepared to
implement his vision of perfect apparel
in the production of Basics as well. I have
taken over my father’s commitment to
quality.
Are there values other than
commitment to quality that you have
taken over from your parents?
I learnt from my parents what is important
in life – and in business. That includes
tolerance and regard and respect for
one’s fellow beings – and staff. Those are
values that have always been cultivated in
our family. Having an open mind for other
cultures is for me self-evident. That is
certainly the case in part because we have
always had our products manufactured
overseas and have always employed quite
a few staff members with foreign roots.
At HAKRO there has been a harmonious
togetherness for a long time. Our selfimage
has always been one of a big HAKRO
family. This is also partly attributable to
the sense of responsibility we feel towards
the human being behind the employee
and not just an interest in his/her work
performance.
Accepting responsibility seems to
be important at HAKRO in general.
Also, sustainability has always played
an important role in your enterprise.
Sustainability is a subject very close
to our heart. As a clothing business with
regional roots but a global viewpoint, we
are very aware of our responsibility
towards people and nature. The essence
of sustainability for me is – as it was for
my father – excellent quality. In other
words, to produce products so that they
last for as long as possible – and that do
not quickly become unfashionable. And
naturally, sustainability also means for us
to offer good working conditions and to
invest in long-term relationships with our
customers, employees and partners. Really
self-evident but, unfortunately, not always
so in our business sector.

How does the sustainability aspect
influence your future planning at
HAKRO?
Today, we are already in a good
posi tion but we would like to be even
better and thereby to operate in an even
more resource and environment friendly
manner. Through the use of hydropower,
solar power and resolute recycling, our
Administration and Logistics departments
will be completely climate-neutral by 2020.
Moreover, the subject of plastic waste
avoidance is on our radar screen. Where
possible, we use less packaging material
than previously. And the consumption of
raw materials for the manufacture of our
collection is going to change sooner or
later. Here, we are engaged in intensive
dialogue and are always on the lookout
for alternative qualities, yarns and fibres.
Promising approaches exist, which we are
consciously and conscientiously pursuing.
A preliminary result is, for example, the
use of bio-cotton in our Organic collection,
which we have had on offer for the last two
years. These designs are even certified
according to the GOTS standard, which can
rightfully be acknowledged as the highest
standard in our industry, and which takes
into account not only ecological but also
social aspects of production.
Looking further into the future:
Are there visions and objectives for
HAKRO 2069?
I would like to think that in 50 years
time HAKRO will still be as attractive and
sustainable as it is today and that the next
generation will carry on the values and
the special spirit of our company. In our
management team we have trained up truly
exceptional managers who not only support
the HAKRO company culture but really
live it. Moreover, we are active in vocational
training and two-track degree programmes
to qualify our own trainees successfully.
That is great.
And how would you describe your
style as HAKRO director?
Very early on, I thought about what
sort of a boss I wanted to be sometime in
the future. Did I want to give orders and
exercise control? Or did I want to see the
employees as a team whose members I
would support and place my trust in? We
do everything we can to preserve the original
family “DNA” of our company. Satisfied
and loyal employees are the basis for our
success. Flat hierarchies help there to
maintain active contact with the staff. The
doors of our management team are always
open. When things get tight, we make the
time and try to help. That was the case in
the past; that is the case today; and it will
surely be the case in 50 years time.

Inspired by Julia Quante
TEAMWEAR
GOES FREE-
STYLE.
Teamwear is not what it used to be. At
least not if HAKRO and Julia Quante have
their way. We engaged the much soughtafter
Fashion Stylist for our Inspirations
Shooting to give a modern touch to the
topic Teamwear – Workwear – Corporate
Wear and together with us, to present
it in a new light. More modern. Fresher.
Bolder. Liberated from conventions and
ways of thinking. Without visual group
conformity. With a lot of individual freedom.
But always with an overall, clearly
recognisable common thread. Not an
easy task but an unbelievably fascinating
one – the result of which is, in our view,
the stunning and inspiring “Team Photos”.

THINK BIG. The uncomplicated oversize look that also features the modern streetstyle elements of youth culture
from the 2010s: Jogging pants, oversize sweaters and jackets, hoodies and superlong T-shirts that can easily be worn
as comfortable dresses. Plus cycling shorts, which were the absolute trend at all recent shows for summer 2019,
or dungarees now making their 90s revival.

TONE IN TONE. The world is colourful, diverse, and nowadays everybody is allowed to wear what they want.
Never before have we had so much freedom in life, and it is precisely for this reason that fashion is paying tribute
to the rainbow colour palette, the symbol of this positive world movement. Entire catwalks were coloured in
rainbow pattern, roads across the globe painted with rainbow-coloured road markings. A positive movement
that brings joy and, even in teamwear, also combines individuality with a group collective.

BUSINESS CHIC. The androgynous dandy style is and remains the No. 1 for a classic, chic appearance among
women and men. Black and white, a white shirt, a polo neck or a smart blazer combined with timeless
elements, like braces or berets. A unisex look that really works for everyone, always leaving a well-dressed
impression and easy to achieve.

CORPORATE POETRY. Why shouldn‘t a team boldly show what it actually does? This is the fundamental idea behind
this look. A florist‘s shop or plant nursery that demonstrates its passion with heart and soul from head to toe,
wearing flowers in an all-over look combined with red and violet tones that makes the team clearly identifiable at
all times. A team that remains present in customers‘ minds.

CASUAL SPIRIT. Who says that basics need to be dull? There‘s hardly anything more popular and essential for
our modern-day look. This is why the most basic elements were brought together for this team: stripes,
jeans and nude shades. Because those with the knack of creating something striking from the ordinary and,
in fact, „dreary“ are very often the most creative of minds – just think of Steve Jobs who always wore the
same simple pullover and yet still cut an impressive figure.

LINE UP. Anyone thinking of team look at some time automatically has a very uniform team picture in their mind‘s eye.
This is where I like to think about Olympic teams entering the arena in a uniform look when their country is introduced
before the start of the games. A nostalgic, proud and important moment to show they are working together on the goal
they share. For me, it is why this type of teamwear was essential here as a source of inspiration. Because as old as this
tradition may be, it is still always delightful to see a team all dressed the same from head to toe, as a way of uniting so
many different individuals.

Interview with JULIA QUANTE
Julia, how did you prepare for the HAKRO
Shooting?
Really, just like for any other shooting.
There was a number of meetings beforehand,
where I got to know the HAKRO
brand, the products and the people
behind them better. We were able to have
an intensive exchange of thoughts. We
discussed desires and initial ideas. And
we agreed on the general direction. The
cooperation during the entire project was
always very reliable, professional and
above all: very pleasant.
signalling that one is working together with
the others on something big and significant.
Hand in hand towards a common
goal. It is always good to see, every time,
how team clothing connects very different
people together to form a unit; and exactly
that is what only teamwear can do.
Corporate Fashion in ten years – your
prediction?
I believe that this market, like so many
other things, is in a state of flux. We live
in a time where the boundaries between
work and private life are becoming ever
more hazy. The working world is changing.
Everyday life is changing. People are
changing; and naturally looks also. There
will always be Team-Work, that much is
for sure. It is just that it will become more
agile. Team spirit and loyalty, however,
cannot be measured according to the
degree of uniformity. For this reason,
I think more individuality will be seen in
working clothes in the future – so that the
personalities of team members can come
more to the fore. For me, Teamwear and
Corporate Fashion will continue to be
used to forge a sense of identity in the
future but will, however, allow more room
for initiative. HAKRO is showing the way.
Your HAKRO Mission in a few sentences?
The most important thing was to provide
a boost to the collection with new impulses
and different lighting as well as to give the
modern zeitgeist more breathing space. I
tried to bring my experience in the classical
fashion business to bear, to allow current
trends to play a role and to open up new
perspectives. In doing this, I had teams
from very different industries and fields of
work in my head. The guiding notion was to
allow the individual team members a large
measure of personal freedom of expression
while upholding the team spirit at the same
time. I think the result is living proof that,
given the appropriate freedom to interpret,
Teamwear and Corporate Fashion offer
generous opportunity for individuality. It
just requires a little courage.
What can only Teamware do?
In the case of the term Teamwear, I
have inevitably at some stage a picture of
a team in uniform-look in my mind‘s eye.
For example, Olympic teams during the
ceremonial march into the stadium – a
very important and emotional moment

after placing your order you will receive the
first production samples in original quality
with all processing details and finishes.

however small, do we start production
under the stringent criteria of HAKRO‘s
quality management system. Including final
inspection before shipping.

are made of the collection or the
modified standard product that is
planned. Once you have examined
them and given your approval, production

STANDARD 100 BY OEKO-TEX®
The „Trust in Textiles“ symbol indicates compliance with
STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®. This is an independent testing and
certification system covering raw materials, secondary materials
and end products at all stages of textile processing. The tests
involved cover substances that are banned or regulated by law
and those that are known to be damaging health. Every HAKRO
garment is labelled with this quality mark.
UNITED NATIONS GLOBAL COMPACT
In 2009, HAKRO became a signatory of the United Nations Global
Compact, thus joining the world‘s largest alliance for responsible
trading. The ten principles of the Global Compact set standards
for compliance with human rights and the implementation of
international labour principles, for environmental protection, for
taking action against child labour and for preventing corruption.
Each year we issue progress reports on the actions we have taken
in support of the ten principles.

OUR COMPACT TEXTILE COMPENDIUM
Conveying comprehensive background
information on anything textile: our compact
HAKRO compendium explains many terms of
typical textile lingo in a concise and illustrative
manner. Yet, if there are still questions,
we will be glad to help.
BREATHABLE A fabric can be said to be
breathable when the material is capable
of wicking water vapour from the inside
to the outside. The breathability level is
specified by the garment’s MVTR (moisture
vapour transmission rate). This describes
the amount of water that can vaporise
through one square metre over the course
of 24 hours. The greater the amount, the
higher the breathability rating for the
garment.
“NO IRON” LABELLING Shirts and
blouses with a “No iron” label are easy to
care for and can be worn straight after
being washed and dried. To assist with
this, you should take the garment out of
the drier when it’s still slightly damp and
allow it to dry off on a clothes airer.
COTTON The quality of a particular
variety of cotton depends mainly on the
fibre length. In the textile industry, this is
known as the “staple length”. The longer the
fibre, the finer and more hard-wearing the
cotton. HAKRO uses only combed cotton
with a staple length of at least 30mm.
CLEVER CARE This is an initiative of the
International Association for Textile Care
Labelling (GINETEX) related to the topic of
washing, drying, ironing and professional
textile care.
COOLMAX ® A high-tech functional
fabric belonging to the Invista brand that
optimally regulates body heat. Its special
4 or 6-channelled fibres wick moisture
directly to the surface of the material,
where it evaporates extremely quickly. For
maximum wearability, in our products we
use only the most effective variant, known
as COOLMAX ® PRO.
COTTON-TEC COTTON-TEC is a double-faced
material in which the exterior
is made of unusually fine cotton and the
interior consists of the functional fibre TRI-
ACTIVE ® . Because the fabric rapidly wicks
moisture to the outside of the garment, it
has a temperature-regulating effect.
PRE-SHRUNK Pre-shrinking is a thermomechanical
textile treatment. It ensures
that the garment is slightly shrunk within
specific tolerances.
INTERLOCK This is a stretchable,
double-sized mesh fabric that only shows
the correct meshes on both sides of the
material.
JERSEY A fine mesh fabric for use in
outerwear in single or double grades.
BUTTONS HAKRO buttons are made
of break-resistant, 3 mm-thick highperformance
polyester. They are attached
for very long-term use by means of a
special lock-stick process.
VAT DYE A dye which exhibits essentially
no solubility in water. For this reason,
vat dyes always find ap-plication when
extremely high demands are made on the
dyeing process. Clothing dyed using vat
dyes is boil-washable, bleach-proof and
colourfast.
LYCRA ® This high-quality variety of
elastane or Spandex, belonging to the
Invista brand, is extremely stretchable
and able to retain its shape.
MEMBRANES IN TEXTILES A membrane
is a special film that is firmly attached to
the reverse side of an outer fabric layer.
Membranes help ensure the garment is
comfortable and can contribute to the
breathability of functional clothing. They
provide protection from external moisture
while allowing gases in the form of water
vapour to escape. In comparison to fabric
coatings, membranes are robust, tearresistant
and consequently longer-lasting.
MULTI-LAYER LAMINATES All coats
and jackets that are equipped with a
membrane consist of at least two layers
of different materials. In 2-layer laminates,
the interior of the jacket is provided with
an additional lightweight lining, which prevents
direct contact with the membrane.
In 2.5-layer laminates, the membranes
are protected with an additional printed
coating. In 3-layer laminates, instead of the
printed coating, a further layer of fabric,
such as microfleece or mesh, is added
to the membrane. This third layer makes
the multi-layer laminate particularly
hard-wearing and makes the garment
very comfortable to wear. Multi-layer
laminates are 100% waterproof provided
that the seams are treated after assembly
with an additional tape seal. Without this
additional sealing process, multi-layer
laminates are merely water-resistant.
MERINO WOOL The Merino wool used
by HAKRO is especially fine, doesn’t
scratch, has a soft feel, an even mesh
pattern and offers high levels of comfort
for the wearer. It can be washed
at 30 C.
MICROFLEECE This very thick velvety
material, made from 100% polyester, is
extremely lightweight, warming, windresistant,
elastic and wearable. Microfleece
garments from HAKRO are particularly
easy to care for and are also provided
with an additional anti-pilling facility.
MIKRALINAR ® This functional, skinfriendly
blend has been specially developed
for HAKRO to combine the benefits of cotton
with the strengths of a special high-performance
polyester. It is effective at absorbing
moisture and rapidly wicking it away
from the skin. Materials produced from
MikraLinar are particularly hard-wearing,
tear-resistant and good at retaining their
shape. Because of their high breathability,
they are also very comfortable.
PIMA COTTON This is an unusually
high-quality variety of cotton with long,
firm fibres. Garments made from Pima
cotton have a smoother surface,
are easy to handle and unusually soft.

PIQUÉ Is a fabric with alternately slightly
elevated and recessed points, thus conferring
a stitched appearance on the fabric.
Piqué belongs to the double weave fabrics
and is a classical material for polo shirts.
POLYESTER FABRICS Polyester fabrics
are tear-resistant, lightweight and absorb
almost no moisture. Moreover, they offer
a well-balanced ratio between insulation,
moisture transport, tear and abrasion
resistance. This is why they are presently
the fabrics most often used for functional
and sportswear. Since Polyester fibres are
manufactured sythetically, there is a large
range of various fibres to choose from
for every requirement on the product.
The properties demanded of the fabric
differ widely and impact on the function,
the moisture transport and the wearing
comfort of the garment.
PRO LABEL is a sign marking the suitability
of a product for professional textile
care. It contains instructions pertaining
to the standardised washing and drying
procedures as applied in commercial
laundries.
ZIPPERS HAKRO uses quality zippers
made by YKK ® which ensures that you may
open and close your zipper umpteen times
without breaking even one tooth.
RIPSTOP Extremely tear-resistant fabrics
that are woven using a special technique.
Thicker threads are interwoven with the
otherwise thinner material at regular
intervals. This makes the weave especially
stable and resistant to tearing.
SOFTSHELL Softshell involves the
combination of an external and middle
layer of clothing in a single product. Such
garments have a smooth outer layer, are
windproof and water-resistant. Inside, they
have a soft surface and are comfortable
to wear. Softshell coats and jackets are
elastic and ideally suited for use as
workwear thanks to the freedom of movement
they offer.
SOFTSHELL LIGHT Softshell Light is a
breathable, hard-wearing, water-resistant
and windproof material consisting of a lightweight
2-layer softshell reliant on TRIACTIVE ®
PRO technology. It’s suitable for use in all
indoor and outdoor activities.
STRETCH The addition of LYCRA ®
enhances the stretch qualities of fabrics,
thereby improving the freedom of movement
and the comfort of the garment.
KNITTED FABRIC Knitted fabric apparel
is, in comparison to woven or tubular knitwear
thicker, heavier and better insulating.
Making meshes by means of one thread
or yarn and two or more needles yields an
elastic purl/knitwear.
SWEAT AND LINING FABRIC This is a
knitwear fabric with homogenous surface,
usually a tubular knit, with a soft lining
thread integrated in such a way that it
remains invisible thanks to a cover thread
on the outer side. The readymade fabric
displays evenly knitted meshes on the
outside while the inside can be strongly
brushed pile. The inside brushing of sweatware
may lead to fuzzing which, however,
will cease after several washings.
TEXTILE PERSONALISATION Customisation
of products, for example by
means of embroidery or printing, is known
as “personalisation”. Standard options
include the placing of a logo on the front
or rear of an item. HAKRO clothing is perfectly
designed for subsequent personalisation.
Thanks to their unusually smooth
finishes, they allow for excellent and longlasting
results.
TEXTILE WEIGHT The textile surface
weight is the weight in grams per square
metre of a fabric. It represents an
important indicator of product quality.
THINK GREEN – WASH AT 30 °C
Nowadays, washing at 30°C is perfectly
sufficient. Washes will still come out clean
as today’s detergents are effective even
at low temperatures. The bonus for the
environment is that washing at 30°C will
save up to 40% electricity. This is why
HAKRO has launched its “THINK GREEN –
WASH AT 30°C” campaign. We hope you
take part, too!
TRIACTIVE ® This high-quality functional
fabric helps wick moisture more quickly
to the outside thanks to the multi-channel
technology used in the special thread
design, making it ideal for activities involving
high levels of perspiration.
TRIACTIVE ® -PRO TRIACTIVE ® PRO refers
to a waterproof and windproof fabric that
is permeable to water vapour. HAKRO uses
TRIACTIVE ® PRO in all situations where the
clothing needs to offer very good levels of
breathability, permeability to water vapour
and waterproofing.
WASHING AND CARE INSTRUCTIONS
All HAKRO products are provided with
specially devised care guidelines. Please
pay careful attention to these.
WATER COLUMN This is the measurement
unit used for the density of fabrics.
The water column indicates how much
water can remain on the material before
it lets in moisture. A one-metre water
column corresponds to approximately
0.098 bar. Garments with a water column
of 1300mm or above may be considered as
waterproof.
WINDPROOFING Windproof clothing
is designed to prevent the wearer from
quickly losing heat as a result of the wind.
The higher the wind speed, the colder the
temperature experienced. This means that
an external temperature of –1° will feel like
–21° C in wind speeds of 40 miles per hour.
This “wind chill” effect can be countered
by wind-resistant clothing.
ZIP-IN SYSTEM The ZIP-IN SYSTEM
allows 3-in-1 coats and jackets to be combined
in line with the customer’s preferences.
For example, a light and warm loft
jacket or a heavy fleece may be combined
with a breathable and watertight active
jacket. The coats and jackets are available
in a variety of colours and can be worn
either on their own or together. Thanks to
their versatility, they are suitable for all
kinds of uses all year round.
YARN HAKRO uses only high-quality
yarns from reputable branded manufacturers.
To produce such yarns, threads
are refined. In other words, a minimum of
two or more threads are twisted together,
with the number of twists determining the
level of tear-resistance and therefore the
durability of the seams.
