(IMI) landed on the 17th spot of Manufacturing Market Insider’s (MMI) latest top 50 list of electronic manufacturing services (EMS) companies in the world. The manufacturing solutions company’s current rank is a notch higher from its previous rank of 18th in the 2017 list. The publication bases its list on the company’s annual revenues. IMI saw its global revenues rise to $1.35 billion in 2018, 24 percent higher from $1.09 billion in 2017. In a filing to the stock exchange Monday, IMI president and chief executive officer Giles Bernard said the company’s business pipeline progressed with $320 million of new project awards in 2018. Majority of the project awards, at 72 percent, are for automotive applications as advanced driver assistance systems, body electronics, lighting, power management, safety systems and infotainment generate more businesses for IMI globally, Bernard added. Meanwhile, 19 percent of the project awards are for the industrial segment. CEZA ecozone centers launched The parks are expected to boost tourism in Santa Ana and nearby Palaui Island but without sacrificing its features for unplanned and unregulated tourism growth The Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) on Monday said it is set to break ground this month for the construction of the CEZA corporate and commercial centers inside an 11-hectare property dubbed the CEZA Global City. Secretary Raul Lambino, CEZA administrator and chief executive officer, said the two buildings would be ready for occupancy by early next year. The centers are seen to fill the demand for offices inside the Cagayan Special Economic Zone and Freeport’s (CSEZFP) 26 financial technology principal licensees. Local commercial banks and new business locators in the tourism and manufacturing sectors are also setting up offices in the centers. The centers are among the infrastructure that will rise in CSEZFP covering the municipality of Sta. Ana in Cagayan. In addition, CEZA is also gearing up for the improvement and rehabilitation of Port Irene, with six new warehouses being constructed in response to the demand for space from port users importing construction materials and supplies as well as a variety of loose cargoes. CEZA said that CAGWEI, a Chinese company, has also finished the construction of a paper-recycling plant which could turn in tons of regular and special papers for domestic use and export to countries especially in the Asia-Pacific region. The CEZA administrator has tapped a local company to work on a master development plan including feasibility studies. CEZA will also seek authority from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and engage the local government unit and other organizations for the development of the Nangaramoan Eco-Tourism Park and the Palaui Island Eco-Tourism Park. The parks are expected to boost tourism in Santa Ana and nearby Palaui Island but without sacrificing its features for “unplanned and unregulated tourism growth,” Lambino said. “We have to protect and preserve these natural tourism havens from commercial abuse. We will allow Santa Ana and Palaui Island to breathe, not to be choked by exploitation,” he added. CEZA is also expected to advocate medical tourism, facilitate private investments and develop retirement villages as well as aligned tourism facilities and put in place best practices, international compliance, quality standards, building codes and environmental safeguards. The CEZA administrator has tapped a local company to work on a master development plan including feasibility studies such as financial viability for projects approved by the CEZA board for the 54,000-hectare special economic zone and freeport. (CitySavings) has concluded another month-long nationwide run of Project Pink, a breast cancer awareness forum for teachers, in line with the celebration of National Women’s Month last March. “This signature Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of CitySavings aims to look after the welfare of Filipino public-school teachers. Project Pink provides an avenue to educate and raise awareness on early detection of breast cancer in order to reduce its risk among women,” said CitySavings reputation management head Paula Ruelan. “A cloud of fear always surrounds breast cancer and this is why many women succumb to this disease. We want to be able to raise awareness, to give women the right information about this disease and show them that there is treatment, especially if diagnosis is done in the early stages,” Ruelan added. Project Pink is organized in coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd). This month, close to 800 educators took part in the event, which were held in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental (5 March), Catarman, Northern Samar (22 March), Tagum City, Davao del Norte (27 March), Dasmariñas City, Cavite (27 March), Cebu City (28 March) and Calamba City, Laguna (29 March). Dr. Chito Abellar, the guest speaker for the Dasmariñas leg, encouraged the more than 200 teachers who attended the talk to visit the doctor the moment they feel something is wrong. Early detection, Dr. Abellar said, is the only thing that will help increase the chances of surviving this dreaded disease. Tuesday, 9 April 2019 Daily Tribune BUSINESS 11 Vigan Airport Runway Project breaks ground When we build and improve our nation’s airports, we are also building platforms for mobility and connectivity that ushers in economic and social development VIGAN, Ilocos Sur — The Vigan Airport is expanding to meet more robust passenger demand with the groundbreaking of its runway extension project on Monday. The Department of Transportation (DoTr), Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), Department of National Defense (DND) and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), together with the provincial government of Ilocos Sur, led the groundbreaking ceremonies. Vigan Airport, classified as a community airport by the CAAP, currently caters to general aviation aircraft. Once completed, the P69-million runway extension project will enable Vigan Airport to serve bigger aircraft, which means more flights and more passengers for the airport. “When we build and improve our nation’s airports, we are also building platforms for mobility and connectivity that ushers in economic and social development. Through this project, Vigan will be more accessible to Filipinos who wish to witness its historical charm. The Vigan Airport Development Project is among four airport projects that proceed from the TUGADE The Bankers Institute of the Philippines Inc., (BAIPhl) is now a partner of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) for a focused, sustainable, wide-reaching and holistic approach in the implementation of the clean note and coin policy (CNCP). Coinciding with the celebration of BSP’s 70th year of central banking in the Philippines and BAIPhl’s 30th National Convention, the partnership was formally launched on 13 March 2019 at Hotel Veniz Burnham, Baguio City. Over 200 representatives from various sectors — banks, businesses, market vendor associations, transport groups, cooperatives and government agencies convened for the launch event. A Know Your Money briefing was also conducted by the Currency Communications Staff, BSP and an on-site unfit currency exchange was provided by BAIPhl-member banks, i.e., Bank of the Philippine Islands-Abanao Branch and UnionBank of the Philippines-Baguio Branch. In her opening remarks, Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation vice president Irene Arroyo, former president of BAIPhl, highlighted Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed by the DoTr and the DND in November 2018. The AFP Task Force for Infrastructure Development, headed by M/Gen. Felipe Bejar, will implement the airport projects through funds downloaded from the DoTr. The infrastructure development project of Vigan Airport was launched to address the growing demand for improvement in the airport serving the general area of the Ilocos Region. Aside from the runway extension, projects such as the runway site acquisition, expansion of passenger terminal building (PTB), construction of an administration building and improvement of vehicle parking area (VPA) are also in the works. Vigan Airport, classified as a community airport by the CAAP, currently caters to general aviation aircraft. In just a span of two years, passenger volume has tripled in Vigan. From a record of 14,645 passengers in 2016, the airport was able to register 47,856 passengers for 2018, a compelling indication that Vigan is swiftly gaining an influx of passengers. The City of Vigan, which also serves as the province’s capital, is located on the western coast of the island of Luzon, facing the South China Sea. Consolidated revenues in 2018 ended the year at P160.7-billion, reflecting a sharp 14 percent increase from its year ago restated level of P141.3 billion. “This is a milestone performance for AGI and proves that our aggressive expansion strategies which we started implementing across our various business segments about five years ago have begun to bear fruit. Now, all our major business segments are contributing strongly to the group’s growth. We look forward to sustaining this momentum in the coming years,” says Kevin Tan, chief executive officer, AGI. In her key message, BSP managing director Josefa Elvira Ditching-Lorico said the BSP is exploring strategic partnerships with key organizations to widen the reach of information on currency-related matters. “The BSP also enjoins the banks and the general public to ensure that the life of notes and coins is extended, by deterring unacceptable practices such as stapling and excessive folding of banknotes. Banks should also deposit or exchange on a regular basis unfit banknotes and coins with the BSP,” she added. Lorico is optimistic that the partnership will succeed in its mission to reinforce positive change in Filipinos in handing Philippine banknotes and coins.
