More ‘mystery’ cocaine bricks wash ashore
The bricks were brought to the Burgos municipal police
station
Police authorities yesterday reported
that another cocaine stash was discovered
on Philippine waters, this time, in Burgos,
Surigao del Norte.
The Supreme Court (SC) has ordered the Manila
City Regional Trial Court Branch 5 to reinstate the
criminal case for reckless imprudence against a
ranking official of the Sulpicio Lines Inc. (SLI),
in connection with the 2008 M/V Princess of the
Stars tragedy that killed 227 passengers.
The ill-fated M/V Princess of the
Stars owned by
SLI capsized
off the coast of
San Fernando,
Romblon at the
height of Typhoon
Frank on 21 June 2008.
In a 20-page decision
penned by Justice Jose
Office-13 revealed that at least 40 bricks of
suspected cocaine floating in the waters
were recovered by fishermen around 4:30
p.m. Sunday.
Probers noted that the recently recovered
bricks had the same markings with those
that were found in Barangay Pacifico in
Reyes, Jr., the Court’s Third Division granted
the consolidated petitions of the victims’ and
their families.
It also reversed and set aside the 22 March
2013 decision and the 8 January 2014 resolution
of the Court of Appeals (CA) that ruled in favor of
respondent Edgar Go, SLI first vice president for
administration and team leader of the company’s
crisis management committee.
The ill-fated M/V Princess of the Stars owned
by SLI capsized off the coast of San Fernando,
Romblon at the height of
San Isidro, which were wrapped with
fishnet.
The bricks were brought to the Burgos
municipal police station and will later
be turned over to the provincial crime
laboratory office.
To recall, authorities had been
recovering millions of pesos worth
of cocaine in the waters off several
provinces, especially in the eastern
seaboard of the country, which prompted
President Rodrigo Duterte to order an
Justice for sunken ship’s victims proceeds
typhoon “Frank” on 21 June 2008.
At least 227 died and 592 were still missing and
only 32 survived from the 849 persons on board at
the time of the tragedy.
“In this case, the criminal action instituted
against respondent involved exclusively the criminal
and civil liability of the latter arising from his
criminal negligence as responsible officer of SLI,”
the decision said.
“The civil action against a shipowner for breach
of contract of carriage does not preclude criminal
prosecution against its employees whose negligence
resulted in the death of or injuries to passengers,”
the High Court held.
immediate investigation.
The President previously disclosed
that international drug syndicates were
behind these cocaine bricks that are
being discovered floating in waters across
the country
The Philippine National Police
said it was in close coordination with
international counterparts to track the
source of the drug packages.
The government has allotted
a whooping P46 billion for the
implementation of Republic Act
this year.
The amount will be used for
tuition and miscellaneous fees of
students in 112 state universities
and colleges, 78 local universities
and colleges and all government-run
technical-vocational schools
country is that really we have confirmed
that (Sinaloa) and the Medellin cartels
are in the trade now. And it’s cocaine. It
has always been cocaine from Mexico,”
Duterte said in a speech in Malacañang.
The Sinaloa drug cartel was formerly
led by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who
was found guilty by a US court last week
of operating a criminal enterprise.
The Medellin cartel of the late drug
lord Pablo Escobar, meanwhile, was based
in Colombia.
P46B stimulates
free tertiary education
The amount is the biggest
budget for free college
education in the country’s
history.
Reelectionist Sen. Sonny
Angara, chairman of the Senate
Committee on Ways and Means and
vice chairman of the Committee
on Finance, said the amount is
the biggest budget for free college
education in the country’s history.
Stressing that education is the
great socioeconomic equalizer,
Angara urged students to take
advantage of the free education by
studying hard to become productive
citizens in the future.
“As students, your responsibility
is to study hard because that’s your
passport to employment and good
life,” he said.
“Education is a great
socioeconomic equalizer and a
stepping stone to something higher
and brighter,” Angara added.
Food exhibit features
highland delicacies
The Department of Tourism-Cordillera yesterday
opened a food exhibit dubbed Mangan Taku in
Baguio City, featuring native Igorot dishes and
traditional menus that were preserved and nurtured
through generations.
The cook will process the meat then boil it
adding only ginger and salt.
One of the main features in the exhibit is the
pinikpikan which is a regular menu in every
table of the region’s indigenous peoples whether
during special occasions or ordinary days.
It is also the “ritual food” of the natives in
which the elders lead in prayers and chanting
while a chicken was being presented as the
sacrificial offering to their gods and spirits.
In preparing the pinikpikan, the chicken has
to undergo an ordeal in which its body and joints
are hit hard until blood clots are visible, before
being placed in an open fire to remove its feathers.
