frankfortstation.com life & arts the frankfort station | April 11, 2019 | 17 ‘Mamma Mia!’ brings pop, energy to LWE stage Nuria Mathog, Editor Lincoln-Way East students will bring to life a classic tale of love, family and friendship — and more than a few high-energy dance numbers — in their upcoming production of “Mamma Mia!” Area residents can catch one of four performances at the high school this weekend, with shows scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, April 12; 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, April 13; and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 14. Tickets are available at lwemusic.org and at the door prior to showtime. “Mamma Mia!” centers around a young woman named Sophie and her quest to find her father in time for her wedding day. After discovering an old diary written by her mother, Donna, she invites three men who could potentially be her father to the Greek island where she and Donna live. The popular musical, written by Catherine Johnson, is based on hit songs from the Swedish pop group ABBA and has seen international success, touring in more than 50 countries around the world. Director Gina Vitucci said she has been waiting to do a production of “Mamma Mia!” for years. “They were just holding rights because it kept touring and touring and touring professionally, and it was making so much money,” she said. “So, finally they released the rights. I feel like every theater has been dying to do ‘Mamma Mia!’ because they know everyone loves it. It’s a great ticket seller.” Vitucci added she chose this specific musical in part because she wanted to go in a different direction than “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” which the students performed last year. “[That] was high drama, melodrama, so this is the direct opposite of that,” she said. Nearly 90 students are involved in the production, including 62 cast members, 10 student musicians in the pit and 15 crew members. The students have been rehearsing for the musical since early January -- and the music started even earlier. “I gave them a little homework over break,” musical director Ann Kotze said, laughing. Younger students will also have a special opportunity to join the action -- about 60 students in kindergarten through sixth grade are set to take the stage on April 13. The students, who will attend a dance clinic earlier that day, will be invited onstage after the bows to become dancing queens and kings. Two unique features of the Lincoln-Way East production are the on-stage pit and the size of the ensemble, Kotze said. “Gina’s working really hard to incorporate all of them,” she said. “It’s fun. I think that’s the cool thing. every ‘Mamma Mia!’ you see is a little bit different, is going to be a little bit different because of what the director sorts of sees and envisions.” East senior Erin Sawilchik, who plays the role of Donna, said she loves how developed her character is, If you go... Sawilchik said one of her favorite songs in the musical is “Waterloo” because it involves the cast dancing in jumpsuits, and she also enjoys the empowering nature of “The Winner Takes It All.” She said she hopes the audience is able to sit back and have a great time this weekend. “A lot of people love this music, and I just hope they really enjoy the story that we have to tell,” she said. “We worked so hard, and I’m so excited for everyone to come out and enjoy the production that we worked really hard on.” Vitucci said she most appreciated the energy that “Mamma Mia!” brings to the stage. “It’s hard for an audience member to sit still,” she said. “And that’s awesome. I mean, everybody loves this music, whether you grew up with it or not. It’s like a two-hour party.”
