Highland Park Mayor
Rotering wins third term as Mayor
Erin Yarnall, Editor
Mayor Nancy Rotering
will serve as Highland
Park’s mayor for yet another
term, after handily
winning the election.
Rotering was challenged
by Highland Park business
owner Bob Crimo, who
said he ran for the office
because “no one should
ever run unopposed.”
Rotering received 70.1
percent of the vote, with
1,688 votes. Crimo received
29.9 percent of the
vote, with 720 votes.
“I’ve been thinking
about this for four years
and I didn’t like the way
things were moving forward
with the City,” Crimo
said. “I thought I would
throw my name in the
ring.”
Crimo said that one
thing he would have
changed in the City, had
he been elected, was he
would have “had more input
from the people.”
Crimo also noted the
developments being proposed
throughout the City,
and said that the Mayor
needs to “look at the longterm”
impacts of the development,
rather than
“just the short-term.”
He said that now that the
campaign is over, he is going
to “move on with [his]
life.”
“I have no regrets,” Crimo
said. “I’m glad I did
it. I would probably do it
again.”
Rotering said that she is
excited to begin her third
term as Mayor, and is looking
forward to working
with the other government
bodies within the City.
“It’s such an honor to be
reelected to serve our community
for a third term,”
Rotering said. “I love this
job, I love the opportunity
to work with the different
neighborhoods, and
to work with our school
districts and park districts
to make our town the special
place that it’s always
been.”
In her upcoming term,
Rotering said she wants to
work more with Highland
Park youth — something
that she said has been her
favorite part of the job
throughout the past eight
years.
“If we can continue to
lead by example, and build
a future generation of leaders
who recognize that it is
all about helping move out
community and the communities
around us forward,
and build on that for
the future, then I feel like
we’re doing our job well,”
Rotering said.
She also credited the
Highland Park City Council,
whom she works closely
with, saying the Council
has “done an excellent job
of focusing on the things
that really matter in our
communities.”
Rotering said throughout
her next four years as
Mayor, she hopes to build
on Highland Park’s legacy
— something that is especially
relevant in 2019,
Highland Park’s sesquicentennial
year.
“We want to continue
Highland Park’s tradition
of being a wonderful place
to raise a family, a wonderful
place to come back to
when you’re a senior citizen
and a wonderful place
to be a kid,” Rotering said.
“I look forward to the next
four years as an opportunity
to not only build on
that legacy, but to continue
to move us forward.”
