Giants getting familiar with the game

Make no mistake, there’s potential
among the Giants roster.
Highland Park has started out
1-3 on the season, but the talent is
there. Specifically, seniors Tatum
Rudman, Phoebe Rudman, and
Maddy Goodrich are three midfielders
entering their fourth year
with the program.
On top of that, freshman
Berkeley Clayborne has been excellent
so far. She scored a pair
of goals and won the majority of
her draws in the Giants’ 18-2 loss
to Evanston at Highland Park on
April 3.
Head coach Jennifer Loewenstein
said the team will be relying
heavily on that quartet this
season.
“So far all have scored goals,
won a lot of draws, done a lot
of really good things,” Loewenstein
said. “Between the four of
them, that’s a definitely a powerhouse.”
Highland Park aims to improve
upon a two-win season a year ago
despite having just three seniors
on the roster. The Central Suburban
League is challenging, so the
Giants look forward to their nonconference
schedule.
The team looked good in a 7-4
win over Nazareth Academy on
March 14. Clayborne netted a
hat trick in that win, and Tatum
Rudman added a pair of goals
herself. Contests versus Walter
Payton and Northside College
Prep loom.
Besides winning more games,
Loewenstein wants the girls to
gain a better understanding of
lacrosse. Most of the Giants

haven’t played before, so Highland
Park has been focusing on
the little things.
“We’ve been a developing program,
so winning would be great,
and just learning more about the
game,” Loewenstein said. “A lot
of girls have come here never
playing lacrosse before, so we
want to develop that lacrosse IQ.
When something happens, how
do you react? We’re really working
on things like that. I’m excited
for a good season.”
