Fifth Annual Conservation Film Festival April 12th – 14th
Officials at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge have announced details about the Fifth Annual
Conservation Film Festival, which will take place Friday evening, April 12th thru Sunday afternoon, April 14th.
The free public event will take place at the refuge’s visitor center and headquarters complex in Newburyport. A
diverse selection of award-winning, conservation-related films from across the world will be presented on the big
screen in the visitor center auditorium. This year’s attendees will further benefit from the recent installation of
a new laser projector and surround sound system!
Films that will be screened during the festival focus on a broad range of important and timely conservation
topics. This year’s films include:
• Lobster War: The Fight Over the World’s Richest Fishing Ground is about a climate-fueled conflict between
the United States and Canada over waters that both countries have claimed since the end of the Revolutionary
War. The disputed 277 square miles of sea, known as the Gray Zone, were traditionally fished by US
lobstermen. But as the Gulf of Maine has warmed faster than nearly any other body of water on the planet,
the area’s previously modest lobster population has surged. As a result, Canadians have begun to assert their
sovereignty.
• Love and Bananas: An Elephant Story: Independent Spirit and MTV nominated actress, Ashley Bell and a
team of elephant rescuers, led by world renowned Asian elephant conservationist Sangdeaun Lek Chailert,
embark on a daring 48-hour mission 500 miles across Thailand to rescue a 70-year old captive blind Asian
elephant and bring her to freedom. “Love & Bananas: An Elephant Story” is a heartwarming and hopeful film
that exposes the plight of Asian elephants and the people who work tirelessly to save them.
• Saving Atlantis is the first documentary to take a deep dive into one of the most consequential issues of our
time: the dramatic decline of global coral reef ecosystems and the impact on human populations that depend
on them. Coral reefs are one of the world’s most diverse habitats. They are often called “the rainforests of the
ocean,” but the rapid acceleration of coral bleaching events around the world is jeopardizing their future.
• The Serengeti Rules won the prestigious ACFF “Green Fire” award. Beginning in the 1960s, a small band
of young scientists headed out into the wilderness, driven by an insatiable curiosity about how nature works.
Immersed in some of the most remote and spectacular places on Earth—from the majestic Serengeti to the
Amazon jungle, from the Arctic Ocean to Pacific tide pools—they discovered a single set of rules that govern
all life.
• Bird of Prey: The Philippine Eagle is a bird of extremes. It’s the world’s largest and rarest eagle, found only in
the Philippines. Fewer than 800 individuals remain today, and the future of these iconic raptors — and of an
untold number of other species — is tied to the fate of the Philippines’ last fragments of old-growth forest.
In 1977, world-renowned cinematographer Neil Rettig filmed the first images of the Philippine Eagle in the
wild, transforming the bird into a national symbol. But today, with a rapidly expanding human population
facing serious political, economic, and environmental turmoil, the eagle’s plight has fallen out of public
consciousness. “Bird of Prey” follows Neil’s return to the Philippines as he embarks on a grueling expedition
alongside a small but devoted group determined to protect the eagle. Together, they answer the question:
What will it take to save a species from extinction?
• The Vanishing Caribou Rainforest is a cinematic journey into the tragically threatened world of endangered
mountain caribou, their home in the world’s largest remaining inland temperate rainforest, and the critical
human choices that will ultimately decide the fate of this stunning ecosystem. With the failure of agencies in
the U.S. and Canada to regulate industrial resource extraction effectively, honor the treaty rights of indigenous
peoples, and protect the integrity of the natural systems of this region, this film gives voice to First Nations,
scientists, foresters, conservationists, and recreationists attempting to
chart a new path forward before it is too late.
• High Tide in Dorchester is a film that encourages discussions and actions
concerning sea level rise, erosion and climate change in Dorchester
County, MD. The film creates a powerful, intimate story that looks at
a worsening global threat through the lens of Chesapeake Bay’s most
vulnerable county.
All film festival screenings are free and open to the public. Seating in
the visitor center auditorium is limited to 85 and will be filled on a first
come, first served basis. A complete film festival schedule is available on
the refuge web site: http://www.fws.gov/refuge/parker_river/. For further
