<strong>BACnet</strong>/IP the “Tool” from Engineering to<br />

Project Management<br />

Santiago International Airport obtains the<br />

benefits of using <strong>BACnet</strong> and Beckhoff<br />

technologies in the new extension of their<br />

facilities.<br />

The new terminal extension project for Santiago<br />

International Airport will allow the use of 67<br />

new boarding gates along 294.000 m² of total<br />

area. The number of passengers will increase<br />

significantly by more than 10% every year, with<br />

a total of 21 million transit movements recorded<br />

for the last year. The scope of the control extension<br />

project covers the main facility systems,<br />

including HVAC, lighting, energy management,<br />

elevators/escalators, platform illumination,<br />

towers and third-party integrations such as<br />

water storage alarm systems and passenger<br />

gangways.<br />

The project demands not only the collection of<br />

field data, the PLC will have a logic control to<br />

ensure the correct operation of the different<br />

physical devices and sensors installed in the new<br />

terminals of the airport. As a mandatory project<br />

requirement, the system had to be created<br />

following a philosophy oriented to real open<br />

systems, so it was decided to use <strong>BACnet</strong> as a<br />

control system development standard.<br />

The complete solution to cover all aspects<br />

mentioned above, was created using a total of<br />

more than 300 PLCs distributed throughout the<br />

newly developed surface. 23 Beckhoff CX5010<br />

as main data concentrators and 57 CX9020 with<br />

233 CX8091 systems were installed to collect<br />

field information.<br />

The complete I/O list includes more than 10.000<br />

signals, processed by Beckhoff PLCs, creating an<br />

object hierarchy that enables a communication<br />

and sharing information through the use of the<br />

physical <strong>BACnet</strong> network.<br />
