Solutions BACnet/IP the “Tool” from Engineering to Project Management Principal, Santiago International Airport. © Beckhoff Santiago International Airport obtains the benefits of using BACnet and Beckhoff technologies in the new extension of their facilities. The new terminal extension project for Santiago International Airport will allow the use of 67 new boarding gates along 294.000 m² of total area. The number of passengers will increase significantly by more than 10% every year, with a total of 21 million transit movements recorded for the last year. The scope of the control extension project covers the main facility systems, including HVAC, lighting, energy management, elevators/escalators, platform illumination, towers and third-party integrations such as water storage alarm systems and passenger gangways. The project demands not only the collection of field data, the PLC will have a logic control to ensure the correct operation of the different physical devices and sensors installed in the new terminals of the airport. As a mandatory project requirement, the system had to be created following a philosophy oriented to real open systems, so it was decided to use BACnet as a control system development standard. The complete solution to cover all aspects mentioned above, was created using a total of more than 300 PLCs distributed throughout the newly developed surface. 23 Beckhoff CX5010 as main data concentrators and 57 CX9020 with 233 CX8091 systems were installed to collect field information. The complete I/O list includes more than 10.000 signals, processed by Beckhoff PLCs, creating an object hierarchy that enables a communication and sharing information through the use of the physical BACnet network. 4 BACnet & BMS Journal India 1 04/19
Solutions Many of the systems installed, allows for a direct integration using BACnet, reducing additional engineering costs. Collecting the different objects inside the device becomes a simple task using device discovery. The main brands involved in project were Sodeca, Carrier and others. Using BACnet for the entire installation meets the final customer demands, positively impacting in less maintenance resources. The responsible staff for the design and engineering will also carry out the maintenance of the system for the next 15 years. The experience gained during the engineering with BACnet will facilitate the tasks mentioned above. At the moment, the control development work is developing in time and cost, with an approximate opening of the first terminals during this year. Initial investment of 700 million dollars will ensure that Santiago International Airport will be one of the most important airports in South America, not only in terms of modernity, but in the use of a technology adapted to the present times and focused on the end-user.
