BABYPALOOZA!! We kicked off 2019 this year in true Babypalooza form with a number
of our mom bloggers having babies or currently expecting. We had sad news that
Madison Cleckler who was expecting her third child had a miscarriage. We talked
with her recently, and she shared that the silver lining was how her community online
and off gathered around to support her. Madison candidly shares her journey on Instagram
at (@madison.clecker). 1 in 4 pregnancies will end in miscarriage or loss, so it’s
important to talk about it. #startthediscussion
1NICU APP OFFERS PARENTS PEACE OF MIND
FOR PARENTS WITH BABIES IN THE NICU, IT MAY
For parents with babies in the NICU, it may feel
like time stops—but in reality, life doesn’t. Family
obligations, work, and other responsibilities can keep
families from staying with their baby around the clock.
AngelEye Health offers a family engagement app that
eases their stress. With this innovative technology, a
camera is positioned in the nursery to point toward baby’s
crib. Mom, Dad, and other families members can use a
password to log in through a secure network to see
baby anytime—24 hours a day.
The application is compatible with computers,
tablets, and even smartphones. So if families are
at work, running errands, or even lying awake in the
middle of the night, they can see their baby. There’s
also an optional one-way audio component so families
can talk to their baby.
Not only does the system offer peace of mind, but
it also fosters important bonding for the whole family.
Older siblings can watch their new brother or sister,
even if they’re not yet allowed to hold the baby, and
grandparents unable to go to the hospital can still bond
Antibiotic Resistance
YOUR CHILD HAS A COLD AND FEELS
MISERABLE. You take him or her to
the pediatrician expecting an antibiotic as
treatment. Unfortunately, this mindset has
led to more and more children becoming
dangerously resistant to antibiotics.
Dr. Shannon Ross is with Infectious
Diseases at Children’s of Alabama. She says
antibiotic overuse is leading to children
becoming very sick and harder to treat.
“We see children every day who five to 10
years ago, we could have treated with an
oral antibiotic. But because there are not
many options, we are having to admit them
and give them an IV antibiotic,” she says.
Most illnesses are caused by a virus.
However, antibiotics don’t treat viruses.
They treat bacterial infections. “A bacterial
infection would be something like pneumonia
or an ear infection,” Dr. Ross says.
And antibiotics are necessary to treat
those infections.” Antibiotics can even be
life-saving when used to treat a bacterial
infection. But if a child receives antibiotics
when it’s not needed, this overuse can
lead to the child being resistant over time.
“We are seeing, over the past decade or
so, increasing resistance,” Dr. Ross says.
“Common infections, pneumonias, bladder
infections we used to treat easily are now
Antibiotic resistance is a widespread problem.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) calls it “one of the world’s most pressing
public health problems.” Dr. Ross says parents
can play an essential role in preventing antibiotic
resistance. “When taking your child to the
pediatrician, talk to your pediatrician about the
diagnosis. If he or she prescribes an antibiotic,
it’s OK to ask what the antibiotic is for and if it’s
necessary.” She also advises that parents don’t
pressure pediatricians to prescribe medicine their
child doesn’t need.
If the pediatrician does prescribe an antibiotic,
remember these safety tips:
• Take antibiotic exactly as prescribed
• Don’t skip a dose
• Finish the course of treatment
• Never share antibiotics with anyone else
Parents can also help fight antibiotic resistance
by encouraging their children to take simple steps
to prevent the spread of infections. Encourage
hand-washing and make sure your child is up to
date on their immunizations. Also, remember
if your child has a cold the best thing to do is “ride
it out.” Help keep them hydrated and make sure
they get plenty of rest. This will help their immune
system to fight off the virus on its own.
Postnatal
5 Tips for Hiring the
Right Postpartum
Support Person
BY MEGHAN RATLIFF
BY MEGHAN RATLIFF
HEY THERE, MAMA-TO-BE! Your delivery date is getting close.
Presumably you took a good amount of time to choose your OBGYN.
There will likely be multiple nurses attending you as you birth. Most
expectant mothers have their partner by their side, and often other
family members and possibly even a birth doula attend.
This group of people—your OBGYN, partner, nurses, doula, and
friends or family—are your birth support team.
14 Babypalooza.com

Pregnant women agonize over the decision of
who will support them at the time of their birth—
and rightfully so! We spare no expense to have a
healthy mother and newborn. Well ... we do until
they leave the hospital.
Once home, in the U.S., a mother’s partner more
than likely will need to go straight back to work.
Family members, if they live close by, may visit
occasionally, but they also have work and life to get
back to as well. Mom will leave the hospital and not
see her doctor and nurses for a whopping six weeks.
During this postpartum season, a huge amount of
healing, change and growth are occurring in a new
mother’s life. This period is as crucial as birth itself
and merits the same amount of support and attention
as labor. If it is financially possible, it is highly
beneficial to hire professional help, such as a
postpartum doula.
Many couples are now opting for showers where
gifts of service are given as opposed to onesies and
blankets. At these showers, contributions of meals,
house-cleaning services, and other professional
assistance for new families are encouraged.
During your fourth trimester, whether you hire
a support person or you rely on a family member
or friend for care, here are some questions and
guidelines you should consider:
1DO YOU AND YOUR PARTNER FEEL
COMFORTABLE WITH THIS PERSON?
That doesn’t just mean do you like them … it means,
are you comfortable enough with them to tell them
no?. I have had clients who hired me for a second
baby due to the fact that their mother helped with
the first. And while Grandma was lovely and caring.
she could not keep her idea that the baby needed
a bottle to herself. The sweet new mom in this
scenario had a hard time trying to heal and rest and
fight her mother on this issue. This leads me to my
second suggestion.
2DOES YOUR SUPPORT PERSON SHARE AND/OR
RESPECT YOUR PARENTING CHOICES?
You are at your most vulnerable during recovery
and bonding, and it is not the time to be fighting
someone about the fact that you do not want your
baby to have a pacifier. I would even consider writing
down in advance what you do and don’t want for you
and your baby. If you are hiring someone, you may
even include these items in the contract to be
signed by both parties.
3
IS THIS PERSON SOMEONE WHO WILL TAKE THE
4
During this
postpartum season,
a huge amount of healing,
change and growth
are occurring in a new
mother’s life.
This period is as crucial as
birth itself and merits the
same amount of support
and attention as labor.
INITIATIVE TO PERFORM TASKS ON THEIR OWN?
If your support person just wants to “hold and
snuggle the baby,” they are not your support person.
Your support person should be cooking for you,
cleaning for you, and making sure the house is
running smoothly so you can rest and focus on
yourself and the baby.
IS THIS PERSON TRUSTWORTHY?
This is guideline is really important and easily
overlooked. You don’t need Aunt Deborah telling
your cousins that breastfeeding is not going well
for you. You need someone supporting you that you
feel you can trust to listen to you and keep your
information private.
5IS YOUR SUPPORT PERSON TRAINED USING
EVIDENCE-BASED RESEARCH IN POSTPARTUM
RECOVERY AND NEWBORN CARE?
OK, so maybe this one is a loosely veiled plug for
hiring a postpartum doula. But it is very true. It is
said you can tell where a person’s treasure lies by
where they invest their time and finances.
Investing in your recovery as a new mother is
investing in yourself and your family.
Ask a seasoned mother if she spent too much money
on newborn clothes and you will likely hear a
resounding yes! But I promise you this: No one ever
says, “I wish I had spent less on my fourth-trimester
support.”
ALICE IN
“Onederland ”
BY BRITTANY SHARP
DANIELLE T. PARKER PHOTOGRAPHY
“DON’T BE LATE ... IT’S AN IMPORTANT DATE!” That
was the message emblazoned on Kenny’s “Onederland”
party in honor of her first birthday. Mom Shani
Wilson wanted to throw a bash that was fun but girly
— and we knew a tea party would be the perfect way
to celebrate.
But for a milestone first birthday, we didn’t want to
throw any old tea party. We pumped it up with a fun
Mad Hatter theme, complete with a chic black-andwhite-striped
design scheme.
Guests arrived to tables set for the perfect tea,
complete with vintage china place settings, gift boxes
containing activities for the kids, and snacks to keep
them entertained.
But while the snacks were a fun treat for kids, the
main event (which drew every eye in the house) was
the wall full of desserts! Against the garden backdrop,
Sullivan’s Legacy
Sullivan’s
Legacy
BY KIM HILDENBRAND
Sullivan
October 16, 2016, should have
been the best day of Mark and
Laura McCarty’s lives.
After a typical pregnancy, they welcomed their muchawaited
baby girl Sullivan. However, Sullivan was born
ill, and the couple only had a short time with her before
they had to say goodbye. “It was the most beautiful
and most horrible day of our lives,” Laura says. But as
you’ll soon understand, Sullivan’s legacy lives on in
so many ways.
FIRST COMES LOVE
Laura and Mark met when she was a freshman at
Auburn and he was a senior in high school. Though
they were just acquaintances, six years later they
reconnected at a friend’s wedding and fell in love.
“It was on just our third date when we knew we were
going to get married,” Laura recalls. “In fact, we began
dating, got engaged and were married all within a year’s
time!”
The couple, who live in Vestavia, had been married
almost three years when they began trying to conceive.
Almost immediately, in February 2016, they had a
positive pregnancy test. “I couldn’t believe that we had
gotten pregnant so quickly,” Laura says. “I have a lot
of friends who have struggled to get pregnant for many
months—years, in fact. It seemed surreal that it
happened so fast. What an incredible blessing that
I don’t take lightly.”
Laura’s pregnancy was easy and uneventful. The
first few months, she encountered some nausea. But
soon it subsided, she got her energy back, and she felt
“amazing.” The couple couldn’t wait to meet baby
Sullivan—whom they called Sulley for short.
A HELLO … AND A GOODBYE
Two weeks before the due date, Laura went into labor
in the middle of the night. “I wasn’t sure at first if it was
real labor,” Laura remembers. “For hours, I thought it
was just gas pain!”
The couple headed to the hospital and learned that
the labor was, in fact, real. Laura had been terrified of
labor but, she says, “Labor wasn’t nearly as scary as I
thought it would be.” She recalls being “overwhelmed
with incredible peace” as she prepared to give birth.
Babypalooza.com 27

“I just knew that I could do it,” she says, “and that
it wasn’t something I should fear.”
After 12 hours of labor, the doctor told the
McCarty family it was go time. After just a few pushes,
baby Sullivan arrived. However, nothing went as
they’d expected.
“Immediately when she came out, we knew something
was wrong,” Laura says. “Her coloring was off,
and her belly was distended. Immediately our room was
filled with nurses to help her. We had a little time with
her before they whisked her off to the NICU.”
Before Sullivan left the room, her loving parents
heard her cry. They cuddled her. She looked deeply
into their eyes.
“No one knew that Sulley was sick until she came
out,” Laura recalls. “There was never any signs or
complications during my pregnancy or delivery. The
doctors made it very clear to us that she was very sick
and they didn’t have any clue why.”
Laura still tears up when she thinks about that
beautiful and horrible day. “Our greatest joy was born,”
she says, “and we had no clue that we would lose her
that very same day.”
For the new parents, their time with Sulley was far
too short. Though doctors worked to save her, her body
was “too weak and sick” to accept two full-body blood
transfusions. The medical staff couldn’t do anything to
save their precious girl.
“We were with her as she took her first and final
breaths this side of heaven,” Laura says. “I’ll never
understand why we didn’t get to have more time with
her this side of heaven, but I’m so thankful for the time
that we did have with our girl.”
COMING TOGETHER
Anger. Sadness. Bitterness. Regret. “You name it,
we’ve felt it,” Laura says, when describing their feelings
after losing their daughter.
“The first few months after losing Sullivan were
nothing short of horrific,” she recalls. “We were truly
living in a nightmare. We couldn’t believe what
happened to us.”
However, rather than drawing away from each other,
Laura and Mark became even closer. They leaned
heavily on each other during the first weeks and months
of grieving.
“After you lose a child, I don’t think you’re ever truly
the same,” Laura says. “It is something I wish no one
would ever have to experience.”
In the months following Sullivan’s death, the couple
got answers. After months of research and testing,
doctors told them that they’d lost Sullivan to cancer.
“She had an incredibly rare form of cancer—so rare, in
fact, that they have never seen it,” Laura says. “Her case
went to the national pediatric convention in 2018.”
After the rollercoaster of emotions had begun to
subside, Laura and Mark focused on how grateful they
were for their short time with their wonderful little girl.
“At the end of the day, we believe that the Lord
gave us Sulley as a perfect gift,” Laura says. “Her life
and her death changed us. We are better people because
of Sullivan.”
INSPIRED BY SULLIVAN
As the McCarty family worked toward healing, Laura—
a graphic designer by trade—began to focus on her
dream of starting a children’s clothing company. In May
Giving Back
The McCarty family knows all too well
the pain, heartache, and loss that cancer
can cause. That’s why for each purchase
made, Sullivan Yates donates a percentage
of proceeds to St Jude’s Children’s
Research Hospital. It’s Laura’s way of
trying to bring a measure of comfort to
children dealing with cancer and their
families.
To learn more about the company or
28 Babypalooza.com

of 2018, that dream became a reality: She launched
Sullivan Yates—a children’s clothing line named for
their baby girl.
As clothing lines go, Sullivan Yates is unique. The
company focuses on producing clothes that are fun and
comfortable—“meant to be played in and made for
adventure,” Laura says.
“We focus on the joy and incredible blessing that our
babies are to us,” Laura says. “Sullivan Yates embraces
the messy, beautifully chaotic days of childhood.”
Laura works closely with her seamstress, Julia, to
produce unique designs.
My inspiration comes from lots of classic pieces,”
Laura says. “My fabric helps modernize each design.”
Customers rave about the comfy and well-made
clothes featuring fun colors and prints. “Our pieces are
classic with a twist—timeless,” Laura says.
In fact, thanks to the overwhelming response, the
company will soon begin small-batch manufacturing.
To honor their daughter and company’s namesake,
Sullivan Yates donates a percentage of their proceeds
to St. Jude’s. “Cancer has affected so many families—
ours too,” Laura says.
“I didn’t want to lose another baby,” she says. “It was
an active daily choice to believe and trust that this baby
was going to come home with us.”
On March 2, 2018, their baby girl Miller was born.
Her labor lasted just three hours. Miller was perfectly
healthy.
“The day she was born was a day of true redemption,”
Laura says. “Just like her sister, she has changed us from
the inside out.”
From the beginning, Miller was an extremely content
baby. Now 13 months old, Miller is a very happy toddler.
“She’s sweet and inquisitive,” mom Laura says. “She loves
music and loves to dance. She’s happiest when
she’s eating—aren’t we all? Ha.”
These days for the McCarty family, life is hectic and
chaotic and beautiful—and Laura wouldn’t change a
thing. She loves working from home, devoting time to
her business and also dabbling in other creative fields.
She cherishes her time with her Miller, treasures her
memories of Sullivan, and embraces each new day.
A SISTER FOR SULLIVAN
And there was more happiness in store for Laura and
Mark: In June of 2017, they found out they were once
again expecting a baby.
“We cried our eyes out with joy,” Laura recalls.
“We thanked Jesus for a chance to raise another baby.”
After a loss like theirs, it’s only natural to be nervous.
But Laura was determined to not let fear rule her
pregnancy.
Life After Loss
As parents who have experienced loss know all too well,
the pain of losing a beloved baby doesn’t go away.
“We will forever wish Miller’s sister Sulley was here with us,”
Laura says. “We should have a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old.
It will always feel like a piece is missing.”
Laura notes that for families who have lost a baby,
sometimes it feels like simply living your life is like “leaving
your baby behind.”
“I felt that way for a long time,” she says. “But the truth is—
we have to keep going, and we keep going because of Sulley.”
Baby Sulley taught the family how to embrace every day
and not take a single one of them for granted.
“We are always telling Miller about sister Sulley,” Laura says.
“We will forever celebrate her.”
MOST MOMS UNDERSTAND THE FEELING OF
ENTANGLEMENT ... of being so wrapped up in a child
that sometimes it’s not clear where mom ends and that
child begins. Award-winning artist Lauren Frances
Evans doesn’t just get it—she created an entire art
exhibit centered on that concept.
Her recent exhibit “Wrapped Up, Tied Up, Tangled
Up” is a fascinating look at motherhood. It was
Lauren’s first solo show since giving birth to her daughter,
who is now almost 3. The show featured collages

Motherhood
and a video installation as well as sculptures
featuring umbilical cords and belly buttons. Lauren
used a wide range of materials—including lycra
fabric, cardboard, styrofoam, and fiberglass resin—
in her artwork.
The exhibit’s title is a nod to a Sunday School
song Lauren remembers from her childhood in
Atlanta. A distorted version of the song is actually
featured in the “otherworldly” video of her undulating
pregnant belly in the exhibit.
“This work has been brewing since before my
daughter was born,” she says, “and this show felt
like a tangible way to share my ideas.”
Lauren, an assistant professor of art at Samford
University, moved to Birmingham from Iowa last
summer with her husband Stephen Evans (also an
artist and a part-time professor at UAB and Samford)
and daughter Agnes.
With a husband who helps with preschool pickups
and drop-offs and does much of the cooking, Lauren
Babypalooza.com 31

32 Babypalooza.com

enjoys a good balance. She loves working with
her students, and thanks to the structure of the
school setting, she says, her artwork has flourished.
She also loves her time with Agnes—the
couple’s “hilarious, inquisitive, and spunky”
almost-3-year-old.
The little girl identifies with her mom’s work,
Lauren says, and recognizes she’s part of it. Upon
seeing the banner outside the art gallery, which
featured an image of Lauren’s pregnant belly,
Agnes would squeal, “That’s me in there!”
For Lauren, motherhood is both a passion and
an inspiration. After ordering herself a piece of
jewelry made from breastmilk, she decided to
dabble with creating art using her freezer stash.
(It’s not easy, she admits.) She’s also trying to
decide how to use her placenta, which remains
in the freezer. She made her daughter Agnes a
soft sculpture of an umbilical cord that she keeps
tucked in bed with her.
Growing up, Lauren made good grades and,
though she loved art, she decided she should
study business. “You’ll end up majoring in art,”
her high school sculpture teacher told her. The
prediction was half true: Lauren double-majored
in business administration and studio art.
During college, Lauren considered all her
options: Go into fashion design? Try cosmetology
school and open a hair salon? She knew she
needed a creative outlet. During her junior year,
a professor suggested graduate school, and Lauren
went on to earn an MFA. Upon graduation, she
was eager to teach. However, in the competitive
academic job market, she wasn’t sure what she
would do if she couldn’t find work: Babysit?
Work at a clothing store?
And then it happened: She accepted she was
meant to be an artist. “Deep down, looking back,
maybe I always knew,” Lauren says. “I just didn’t
see it as an option for a career back then.” She
loves teaching, and also loves the fact that her
career in higher education actually fosters her
work as an artist.
While Lauren was a bit nervous about launching
the progressive motherhood-related exhibit—
her first show since moving to Alabama—
she found the positive responses she received
heartening. “I think the show was a good vehicle
for discussing these things,” Lauren says. “I’m
really grateful.”
The show featured
collages and a
video installation as well as
sculptures featuring
umbilical cords
and belly buttons.
Lauren used a wide
range of materials—
including lycra
fabric, cardboard,
styrofoam, and fiberglass
resin—in her artwork.
she’ll be in a group show in
Los Angeles called Unfinished
Business, which is a show of
works by mother/artists. Next
at the University of North
This resort is so much more than a hotel. Nestled
on a generous 400 acres near the banks of the lower
Colorado river, 30 miles outside of Austin, is a
real-life getaway for your family. You can ride horses
Roughs Nature Park, or splash around in Crooked
River Water Park and pool.
Every day brings new fun and family activities.
Pose for pictures during a Hooves and Horns animal
mascot meet-and-greet (spoiler alert: the mascots
are adorable Texas longhorns, miniature horses, and
alpacas.) Play games in the video arcade. Borrow
(for free!) a couple of bikes to take a ride. Bigger
kids can try their hand at archery, rockwall climbing,
ziplining.
And after a busy day, relax around the bonfire
and enjoy some some tasty s’mores—as
many as you want!—and an outdoor
movie (weather permitting). Many of
the activities are included in the activity
THE THINKERY
www.thinkeryaustin.org
Sure, you’ve been to children’s museums. But
Austin’s Thinkery is really something special.
The exhibits are fun and innovative—featuring
hands-on water stations, a light lab, and pretend
play areas—and there’s a neat outdoor playground.
To beat the crowds, visit after 1:30 p.m. on weekdays,
after school groups have left. Bonus: The
Thinkery is within easy walking distance of Mueller
Lake Park, lots of terrific restaurants, and more.
“Aww, do we really have to go look at flowers?” the
kids might ask. No, kids—there’s so much more to
it! Sure, you’ll see plenty of gorgeous wildflowers (so
bring the camera). But you can also climb the spiral
staircase to the top of the castle-like Observation
Tower, swing under the Cathedral Oaks in the
Arboretum, and explore the Family Garden
(complete with a shrub maze, giant stumps to climb,
and a pretty waterfall to enjoy). Need a breather?
Visit the Little House to relax while the kids play,
17, and $9 for adults). The park is also home to
the Austin Nature and Science Center, the Zilker
Botanical Gardens, and the Zilker Hillside Theater.
MT. PLAYMORE
www.mtplaymore.com
When the kids really need to get out some energy,
Mt. Playmore is the place to be. Plus, at the
enormous playscape (we’re talking 3,000 square
feet!), grown-ups are allowed to climb and play
right along with the kids. (However, if they’d
rather play independently, you can relax in the
seating area and keep an eye on them instead.)
There’s also a 1,400-square-foot toddler area filled
with age-appropriate toys and activities.
Pick up an ATX pass
If you really want to explore what Austin has to offer, consider
purchasing a three-day ATX Pass. This ticket offers more than
20 tours and activities, at a savings of more than 45 percent. All
for a single fee, you can visit a museum, take a boat cruise, and
enjoy various tours via bus, by foot, or even by bike, scooter, or
segway.
Once you purchase the pass, you receive a link so you can
book your preferred tours and activities. You can enjoy as many
activities as you’d like as long as the times don’t overlap and
you don’t do each one more than once. Visit atxpass.oncethere.
com to learn more.
