And this spring’s Lady is both of those things — 10,000-square-feet of exposition space has been added; more than 127 vendors have reserved booths; and organizers are expecting record attendance. All of the food, fashion, fitness and lifestyle fun attendees have come to expect will be there, too, in ample measure from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at the Tinley Park Convention Center, 18451 Convention Center Drive. But Heather Warthen, the publishing company’s chief events officer, also set out with another aim this time around: female empowerment. That is why, in addition to cooking demonstrations and fitness instruction, the expo’s stages are to host several notable, inspiring speakers. “I really wanted to make it my goal this year to include some great, inspiring messages for women,” Warthen said. “And we wound up with a fantastic group.” The speakers will include Rachel McCurdy, who will discuss the success of The Talking Shirt, her Frankfort boutique, and its recent distribution deal with Von Maur department stores. Tracy DeGraaf, known as the Laugh Anyway Mom, will be back with her “Life Happens Laugh Anyway” program. And at noon, Bridget Pettis, the assistant coach of the Chicago Sky, will speak about her pioneering career as a WNBA player and manager. “She’s a real groundbreaker whose talk will have a great female focus,” Warthen said. Compiled by Editor Thomas Czaja, tom@homerhorizon. com. honor From Page 3 A number of people worked on the Porter Room and the memorial tribute, including Interim Assistant Superintendent Brett Gould, who had a large role in researching the history for the project, and Bill Thompson, director of facilities management. Both worked with the architecture team on the design of the project. Gould, who is “a history teacher by nature,” said he worked with the Lockport Area Genealogical and Historical Society, among other resources, to get the information required to produce the historical content included in the memorial narratives. He said they worked with the LTHS Reserve Officer Training Corps students to conduct research, as well, and he hopes they take part in efforts to continue the research necessary to improve the memorial over time. “I am very proud in what we’ve been able to do for this memorial,” he said. “We wanted to make sure not to exclude anyone.” Thompson, who worked with Gould and graphic designers to utilize yearbook pictures in the design of both the memorial and another wall in the Porter Room, which acknowledges “over a century of tradition” at LTHS, agrees with both Gould and Wernet, hoping the memorial will gain recognition. He thinks what makes the memorial wall special is that they put a yearbook picture next to the fallen students’ names. “Most memorials are names on a plaque, but by us using their actual yearbook picture, we put a face with a name,” he said. “As you look at the wall, you see they were students with hopes and dreams just like our current students. They were farmer kids and athletes and they participated in clubs, just like our current students.” Thompson said he wants the students and the community members to see the memorial and make a connection to those who lived similar lives to the ones they lead. “I think the yearbook photos, along with the interactive display, connects these former students with our current students and has the potential to teach us so much about life and death and the realities of war,” he said. “I hope it’s not too late, as I think these young men should always be remembered for who they were, where they came from and what they did.”
