That was exactly the case for Lake Forest Academy. In their first home game of the regular season, the Caxys put on a show, pushing Notre Dame College Prep to three sets before ultimately falling 2-1 on April 10. Fresh off a solid 2-0 win at Wheaton the night before, the Caxys (2-1) came out flat to start the match versus the Dons. They lost the first set 25-8. The second set was entirely different, as LFA brought the energy. Solid play from Jake Arrowood and Charlie Johnson resulted in a 6-0 run, giving the Caxys a 18-12 lead in the set. Notre Dame went on a late 3-0 run with its backs against the wall, but Arrowood got the final kill to win the set 25- 21 and force a third set. The Caxys got a nice boost from a large home crowd throughout the match. Lake Forest Academy coach Jeffrey Bateman isn’t sure what happened in the first set, but was proud of the team’s fight afterwards. He said the Caxys focused on taking care of their side of the ball and allowing Notre Dame to make mistakes. “We just came out flat in the first game, I’m not sure exactly what happened,” Bateman said. “We played a great game against Wheaton last night, just came out flat. They actually settled down and started playing their game against a good team over here. Notre Dame has always been a good contender.” The Dons built an early 9-2 advantage in the third set, but the Caxys slowly kept chipping away. A kill from Johnson made it a 21-17 contest, with LFA putting pressure on Notre Dame. Notre Dame later took a 24- 17 lead, then the Caxys scored five straight points in an impressive rally. Arrowood sent great serve after great serve to narrow the margin to 24-22. The Caxys couldn’t handle a vicious spike on the next point, ending the game. Arrowood and Colin Weil each had three kills, and Nick Shapiro had eight assists playing the middle position. Lake Forest Academy’s team is half made up of athletes new to the sport, so Bateman and company will learn from this early-season defeat and move forward. “We’re trying to stick with the fundamentals because we have half a team of new players,” Bateman said. “We’re trying to stay with the fundamentals so when they do that, they’re in the game.” Jake Arrowood prepares to serve in the Caxys’ 2-1 loss to Notre Dame College Prep at Lake Forest Academy on April 10. Grace Tirzmalis and Ellie Pearson, of Lake Forest High School, Ramatoulaye Keita, Bellamy Marcus and Dane Quest, of Lake Forest Academy got to take the court one last time against some of the top senior players in the county.
