Lake Forest deserves a
lot of credit on the defensive
end for containing
Glenbrook South as long
as it did in their matchup
at home on Thursday,
April 11.
Ultimately, GBS forward
Makayla Stadler
made too much of an impact,
scoring the go-ahead
goal in a 1-0 Scouts loss.
“They ended up with
a couple of good possessions
in the second half,”
Lake Forest coach Ty
Stuckslager said. “Makayla
is one of the best players
in the state and has killed
us in the past. She has a
lot of speed and skill and
can read the game well.
We tried to contain her
and did a good job of it in
the first half. But she was
able to ultimately get one
through.”
Offensively it was a
struggle for Lake Forest
(5-3), only getting up two
shots. Emersen Waddle
had a shot saved in the
second half and the Scouts
couldn’t convert off of
a corner kick with both
teams going up for the
ball, as the ball bounced
off the left post.
“We had trouble possessing
the ball,” Stuckslager
said. “We weren’t
able to win balls if we
got it past midfield so we
never really gave ourselves
chances to score. As
a whole though we were
better against them than a
year ago when we lost 3-1
so there are things we can
take away from how we
played.”
Stadler had several good
shot attempts early in the
second half of the game.
More than anything else,
bad luck was a factor as
the first shot hit off the top
of the post. The second attempt
went over the net.
But a player as good as
Stadler will continue to
give herself opportunities
to score.
The third time proved to
be the charm for Stadler as
she put one through the net
with 17 minutes, 20 seconds
left in the game, the
lone goal of the match.
“My job as a forward is
to score,” Stadler said. “I
had two open looks that I
wasn’t able to put in. I was
upset but I knew I would
get more opportunities if I
continued to stay aggressive.
The third one, I had
another good look and that
time I was able to finish.
We also hadn’t won in our
last three games so we really
wanted to win this one
and get back on track.”
“When you have a player
like Makayla, at some
point you will keep getting
chances to score,” GBS
coach Mark Daniels said.
“We had some long shots
that hit the post but we
made much more out of
season. 22nd Century Media FIle Photo
our possessions in the second
half. All of Makayla’s
shots were good shots so it
was about giving ourselves
more opportunities to find
the net.”
Although GBS (10-2-1)
dominated possession the
entire game, the Scouts’
defense had a big impact,
particularly in the first half.
The game was scoreless at
halftime as Lake Forest
held the Titans to just two
shots. Things opened up
more offensively for GBS
in the second half as they
finished the game with 10
shots.
“We talked about getting
the most out of our
possessions at halftime
and make sure we were
putting ourselves in situations
to get shots off,”
Daniels said. “We passed
up on some possible attempts
in the first half that
we shouldn’t have. Initially
after halftime, we were
taking some long shots but
we had more of an attacking
mindset on offense so
we had more chances to
try and capitalize on those
opportunities.”
The Titans haven’t been
at full strength the last few
games and that may have
played a part in how things
have gone lately.
“We had a player out
that was making a college
visit, we have other
players that are hurt,”
Daniels said. “We’ve been
struggling with injuries
and had to bring up some
players from the lower
levels. But we have a very
good record still and we
did a good job overcoming
those things. Even if
we controlled the game, it
was still good to pull one
out where we could have
done things better. Definitely
better to come away
winning 1-0 than it being
0-0.”
Listen Up
“We’re trying to stick with the fundamentals
because we have half a team of new players.”
