This I promise to do always.” Alex Austin and Louden Moran both became Eagle Scouts late last year — in November and September, respectively — and both continue to live up to the high expectations that come with their rank. Austin regularly helps teachers at Lincoln-Way West at the end of the day so that the teachers might be able to get home to their families a little sooner. He said he thinks what makes the memorial wall special is that they put a yearbook picture next to the fallen students’ names. “Most memorials are names on a plaque, but by us using their actual yearbook picture we put a face with a name,” he said. and at his school by taking on leadership roles to help guide those in need of some direction. Both Austin and Moran plan to go to college in the fall. Austin said he will attend Eastern Illinois and major in computer science, while Moran is heading east to Stevens Institute of Technology, in New Jersey, to study chemical engineering and play volleyball. “As you look at the wall, you see they were students with hopes and dreams just like our current students. They were farmer kids and athletes and they participated in clubs, just like our current students.” Thompson said he wants students and community members to see the memorial and make a connection to those who lived similar lives to the ones they lead. “I think the yearbook “[Beoming an Eagle Scout] means that you fully understand what it means to be a Scout, I would say,” Austin said. “It takes a lot of commitment and hard work, but it also takes a lot to be helpful and friendly at every turn.
