Dr. Kaine Osburn, longtime Wilmette resident and New Trier High School graduate, was selected to become the new superintendent of Avoca School District 37 beginning July 1, 2019. “Dr. Osburn reflects the characteristics desired by District 37’s administration, staff, parents and community members,” said Rick Zelinsky, Avoca school board president. Osburn currently serves as superintendent of Lake Zurich Community Unit District 95 and was deputy superintendent of Naperville Community District 203 prior to that. Osburn’s roots are firmly based in Wilmette. “My parents moved to Wilmette when I was one,” he said. “My parents both were educators. My father, Morris, had been a college basketball coach. Once he obtained his doctorate he took a position with the Chicago office of the U.S. Department of Education. My mother, Marlene, taught school at Evanston’s Timber Ridge in School District 65. They looked for where the best schools were located for their children and found them in Wilmette.” The family rented a house at 15th and Elmwood. “The first place I went on my tricycle was Homer’s Ice Cream,” Osborn said. “One day I went missing. Photo Submitted Homer’s and me inside.” Osburn attended what now is McKenzie School. “It was called Logan School then,” he said. “The name changed to honor its longtime principal Louise McKenzie. It was for students in grades one to six. There was no Highcrest then. The place was a community center. Then I went on to Wilmette Jr. High followed by New Trier.” Osburn received his bachelors degree from Southeast Missouri State. He moved back to Chicago and obtained his masters in English and American literature from the University of Illinois at Chicago and earned his administrative endorsements and his doctorate in educational policy from Loyola University. Before moving into school district positions, Osburn served as an English teacher at Skokie’s Niles West High School and as an assistant principal and then principal. He also worked at Wheeling High School. “My wife, Jenny Rosene, and I moved back to Wilmette in 2005,” Osburn said. “She obtained a job at Wilmette Jr. High the previous year. His wife teaches reading and language arts there. “We decided she should stay at WJHS and not work for me,” he laughed. Osburn said he is a good “listener” and believes in finding out what the parents, staff and community feel is important. “I want to listen to what everyone has to say before we chart a path,” he said. “We want to bring forward our consensus along with the values and ideals of the community. It is a process but like the Avoca yearbook cover says, ‘Dream Big.’ That’s what we want to do, dream big.” He recently attended orchestra concert and is keenly aware of its amazing Science Olympiad. “This is a community where the stakeholders support schools,” he said. “Growing up in Wilmette, attending New Trier and living here now with my family, I know about Avoca’s stellar reputation.” Full story at Wilmette- Beacon.com.
